don't know anyone who doesn't love Thanksgiving, if not for the friends and family, for the food, and most, for both. It's an opportunity when we take the time to reflect and be thankful for our bounty.

PUBLISHER

Andrew Stavast | Andrew.Stavast@LifestylePubs.com EDITOR

I'm grateful to have a very large family of nine other siblings (yes, that means there are ten of us) and our 90-year-old Mummzy, 39 nieces and nephews (and now their spouses), 13 great nieces and nephews and two more babies on the way. Doing the math just for my immediate family can be quite daunting, yet last year we held Thanksgiving at our townhouse. It was a full house, but nobody cared that they sat on the floor or a sofa to enjoy their meal, all that mattered was that we were together. We let go of our big house when we became empty nesters 13 years ago, and I've missed hosting the gang. In this issue, we have a focus on giving to the community through Goodwill and PROP Shop. This story hits close to home for me as you can guess with ten children in our family we grew up shopping at Goodwill to stretch the budget. I still don't know how my parents did it, but they did, and we were always happy. I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving, may you cherish your friendships and family during this season. I trust you will enjoy this issue as much as we did putting it together for you.

Setting the Stage for the

Holiday Season With Simplicity

etting the Stage for the Holiday Season with Simplicity

SPRUCE TOPS – Add to your tired planters as soon as possible, if your soil has frozen, set them in the house to thaw so you can push the stems into the soil. For a natural look add branches (Dogwood, Birch & Willow are a few great options), birch logs and other greenery for more texture. This can work as a base for a fall look, add some pumpkins and gourds and you are good through Thanksgiving. After Thanksgiving change out the pumpkins & gourds with some large ornaments or pinecones. Add some ribbon & lights and you are set for the season.

2 3

– these are a great greeting on your front door or porch. Jazz up a basic wreath with extra types of boughs, twigs, ornaments, dried flowers, and ribbon. Consider using a wide ribbon to loop through your wreath to hang it from your door instead of a metal wreath hanger. WREATHS

CANDLES – the choices are endless on the aroma that you can set in a room along with setting the mood. They make a great addition to a centerpiece, side table or a grouping in an entry way.

GIFT WRAPPING – bring a touch of nature to your wrapping this year. Use kraft paper to wrap the gift, then finish it off with a tip of an evergreen bough with a little ribbon or string. You may even find a few tiny pinecones in your yard to add to it. SIMPLE FINISHING TOUCHES – while enjoying a walk through the park this fall, take along a bag and gather some pinecones. They make great additions to planters, centerpieces or just a bowl full of them (you can even dry them in the oven & add some essential oils afterward for aroma). Glitter sprayed on evergreen branches can add a simple touch of elegance.

– LED lights are beautiful & energy efficient so don't hold back, add them everywhere. Everywhere is easy to do since there are many battery operated strings with timers for ease of use. LIGHTS

take a walk through your yard with a different eye. Look for dried flowers or seed pods that have held their form or color well, Hydrangeas & Sedum are great finds. If you find some with great form but they lack enough color, lightly spray them with paint. Regular spray paint can be a little heavy, so it's ideal to pick up some from a craft center. Cut some branches out of a Crabapple tree that is loaded with red berries to add height to a planter. For more projects visit GARDEN FINDINGS -

My Whole30 Journey WE PUT OUR WRITER TO THE TEST, AND SHE SHARES HER EXPERIENCE IN THIS EXCLUSIVE THREE-PART SERIES. ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY KAREN ALTHEN

18

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | November 2016

PART I - PREPARATION

I

recently learned about the Whole30 food program. Some of you may have heard of it, but not know the specifics; others may not be familiar with it at all. The easiest way to summarize the program is that you consume no sugar, no dairy, no grains or legumes, and no alcohol for 30 days. You eat only “whole” foods – fruits, vegetables, protein (meat, fish, eggs), and nuts. These nutrient-rich foods help cleanse your system, jump-start your metabolism, eliminate food cravings and repair your body. It’s a similar formula to the Paleo diet, which has also been popular lately. I was intrigued by the challenge and interested to learn more about the program. I wanted to understand the logic and the science behind the Whole30 and what it might do for me. I had a few friends who’d recently completed the program and were raving about it, so I did a bit of research online and decided to buy the book.

THE BOOK

I did my Whole30 in September, but began the process in August when I purchased the book, “It Starts With Food.” The authors are certified nutritionists and the program's backed by mounds of scientific research and data. I would not recommend anyone begin their Whole30 Journey without reading the book first. It helps you understand how your body processes food and the impact of your food choices. These insights are particularly useful on difficult days and helped me remember why I was doing Whole30 in the first place. It also changed my entire outlook on food and what I consumed. It helped me understand that Whole30 is not a crash-diet or health fad, but a lifelong and more conscious relationship with what you eat and drink. Now let me insert a bit of a disclaimer here: I’m not going to preach about how this program transformed my life and that I’ll never eat another brownie. For some people, yes, this program is life altering - which is wonderful. But I also believe in having a little fun in life, and anyone who knows me knows that I love food! I believe food is joy, sharing, entertainment, nourishment, and experience. Even though I view food differently than some, I learned so much on this journey, and it has indeed changed the way I think about food.

MY WHOLE 30 JOURNEY (CON TI N U ED)

MY GOALS

After reading the book, I wanted to outline what I hoped to get from this experience – something to track and compare against when I was done. Ironically enough, losing weight was not even part of the equation for me. My primary goal in this effort was just to be more aware of what I was eating. My husband and I eat relatively healthy and are both active, but I wanted to fine-tune our diet a bit. I wanted to be more aware of how food came to our table and what was in it. I do enjoy cooking and trying new recipes but was looking for ways to add more vegetables and fish to our menu. I wanted to be more conscious of buying organic produce, free-range eggs and chicken, and wild-caught fish. I wanted to understand what products contained artificial ingredients or preservatives, and how to opt for healthier solutions. After I had started shopping and reading labels for this article, I was astonished by how many products do have sugar in them – salad dressings, soups, and even deli lunchmeat. Items that I thought I could eat on Whole30 were quickly eliminated, and America’s sugar epidemic became apparent. Another goal of mine was to eliminate sweet and salty cravings. These hit me about 3:00 every afternoon when there’s a bit of lull in the day, and I go looking for a snack. Sound familiar? I figured 30 days of forcing myself to make healthy choices would be the way to tackle this head-on. Lastly, I wanted to try to understand if certain foods might be causing stomach sensitivity. I’ve had tummy issues for years, and recently they’ve become more problematic. I hoped that Whole30 might give me some insight into specific items that might be causing problems, and possibly eliminate the need for medications. Much of these discoveries wouldn’t happen until the Whole30 was complete and I ventured on the “Reintroduction” period. CONTINUED >

MY WHOLE30 JOURNEY (CON TI N U ED)

PREPARATION

I quickly learned that preparation would be key to successfully completing this challenge. After I had read the book, I went to Pinterest to see what recipes I could find. To my surprise, there were tons of great information here, and even an official Whole30 Pinterest Board. I also visited the Whole30 website (www.whole30.com) and found great resources here – shopping lists, weekly menus, and more recipes. I prepared a binder with my checklists, recipes, and notes so everything would be right at my fingertips. One of the pieces of advice I found helpful was to have 1-2 go-to dinner and snack ideas that you can use in a pinch. If you haven’t planned carefully or stocked your fridge adequately, you’re more inclined to make choices that are non-compliant. For me, snacking is where I'm tempted to breach the plan, so I made a list of 15 snack items that I would have on hand at all times. It included things like sunflower seeds, dried apricots, hard boiled eggs, and apples. I even put a bag of nuts in my car so if I got hungry while out and about it was easy to stay on the plan. I also realized that eating out at restaurants might be challenging while on the program, so I made a conscious effort not to schedule outings for lunch or dinner. Of course, I had a few engagements on my calendar already, so I kept those and planned accordingly. Surprisingly – eating out wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. The other thing I did before I even started my Whole30 was to reduce or eliminate some foods for two weeks prior. I know it’s tempting to indulge right before you begin a program like this, but it helped me ease off some things so when I began my Whole30, it didn’t seem like such an

adjustment. For me, I knew breakfast was going to be a challenge. I’ve never been a breakfast eater, so if I can bring myself to eat a bowl of cereal or granola bar for breakfast, I consider this a major accomplishment before 9 am! Whole30 encourages you to eat three hearty and healthy meals each day, with appropriate proportions of protein, fruit/ veggies, and healthy fats. For breakfast, this usually means eggs with veggies, maybe potatoes, and likely some fruit. My oatmeal, cereal and granola bars went right out the window. I figured I could make smoothies. The book talks specifically about smoothies and advises against them because they aren’t balanced enough and don’t have the staying power you need. That all makes sense, but what the heck am I going to eat for breakfast!?! In the spirit of “necessity is the mother of invention,” I set out to make my own breakfast recipe. After some trial and error, I landed on this utterly delicious and ridiculously healthy Pumpkin Apple Mash recipe. It’s warm and tasty in the morning and has a consistency similar to oatmeal. I would make a batch on Sunday and have breakfast for the week – ready to heat up and eat each morning. So there you have it – some of my tricks and insights to getting prepared for a Whole30. I credit the extra prep work for keeping me on track and focused on finishing. There are some tough days – I’m not going to lie – that no amount of preparation can solve for you. But as with anything, you look at the upside and hope that it ultimately offsets a few days of discomfort or inconvenience. Next month, I’ll feature some specifics about my program and a few of my favorite products that got me through.

Modified, elevated pushup-beginner

If you do nothing else, do this move:

The Push-up. There is no movement better for building overall strength. Don't be intimidated; you don't need to be a Marine. Start with a modified version with your hands on your counter top. Do 10 of each variation, every day. Next week, increase it to 15. Week 3, try it on your knees. It takes less than 10 minutes a day. Recognize your progress as you get stronger and be proud.

The standard push-up: Targets arms, shoulders, core & chest.

1. Place hands on mat, directly below shoulders. 2. Zip your abs up & pull belly button into your spine. Your abs protect your back. Keeping them up & tight is the MOST important thing. 3. Tilt hips forward creating a diagonal line. Either stay on knees or come up on your toes. 4. Drop your chest towards the ground, in control, then simply push it back up.

The wide

stance push-up: Targets primarily chest and also abs, back & shoulders 1. Use the same form as the standard push-up, but place your hands wider than your shoulders. Your elbows will be slightly flared. 2. Drop your chest to the ground, and use the strength in your chest to push back up. 3. This is a slightly easier than the standard.

The tricep push-up:

Targets primarily triceps (back of your upper arms) also shoulders, back & abs 1. Use the same form as the standard push-ups, but this time you squeeze your elbows into your side. Place your hands just a few inches apart, directly under your chest. 2. Drop your chest as low as possible, keeping your elbows glued into your rib cage. 3. This push-up takes some time to develop the strength. If you cannot take your chest all the way down, even dropping a few inches will work the muscles and build strength. Brace YourselvesWe’re Home for the

Holidays! T

hanksgiving, also known as the Best Holiday Ever, calls for a picture-perfect gathering of family and friends around a gigantic feast. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I imagine what Thanksgiving is like in other families. I like to make up quick stories as I’m walking by this one particular house on the way to my grandmother’s house each fabulous Thanksgiving. Last year, my story of the house went maybe just a tad overboard, probably due to my very over-active imagination, but I do think it was pretty solid if I do say so myself. It started with about five-and-a-half bottles of wine, a 12-pack of beer, and the unfortunate cheek pinching and sloppy, juicy smooches Aunt Gertie is famous for. Later, while everyone is surrounded at the table about to give thanks, Grandma starts talking smack about Uncle Bob and how he’s the “black sheep” of the family, ever since he moved to Guam because you don’t need a passport to travel there and something about extradition? I don’t know. In all honesty, though, eating all that great food and spending time with my loved ones really is what makes Thanksgiving so fun. I love seeing my cousins that live out-of-state, helping my grandma in the kitchen, and chatting with my great aunts and uncles. But it is crazy, as an adult, how coming home for the holidays is so much different than when I was a kid. So, what’s it like when your kids go off to college and they are – gasp – actually coming home for the first time? WHAT NOW? What do you do? What do we do?! Will life be as harmonious as it was before we left you guys??! Luckily for you, I’ve got this awesome survival guide, so you should probably just keep this magazine handy, or rip these pages out and put it in your pocket for easy reference. I won’t tell. *Winks*

THE PARENTS’ THANKSGIVING SURVIVAL GUIDE:

• Let us (your sweet, darling babe) sleep

in for the first couple of days. We’ve traveled by plane, train, or automobile to get back home and we are looking for that welcome respite from the stress of midterms. And dorms. And roommates. And super gross communal bathrooms. Eww. *Shudders*

•

Stock up your kitchen with indelible eats and treats. Nobody wants to come home to Ramen and hot dogs, because let’s face it, that’s what we’ve been eating consistently over the past few months. Don’t worry, they’re “organic.”

• Please be chill with the questions. You

will definitely have at least 3,867 questions to ask us, but please… Please understand that we might be a little overwhelmed with our trip home and there will be plenty of Q & A with other family members at the dinner table. Let us volunteer information, because that will undoubtedly happen. Especially if wine is involved. Better known as where secrets no longer have a home.

•

Don’t be 100% available. Sure, you’ll want to spend time with us, because we’re fantastic (obviously), but if you make yourself completely available, it turns the stalker notch up just a bit. “Where are you going?” “Who are you going with?”

“When will you be back?” We’ve been independent and making our own decisions for around three months, and we’ve shown that we don’t “need” you (but really, we need you forever and ever). Also, yes, we know everything there is ever to know in the universe.

•

Please don’t ask us what our dating life is like. It makes us cringe ever so slightly discussing our personal lives in detail with you. No, really. It does.

• If we make a drastic change in our

appearance, please tell other family members beforehand, so we don’t have to “explain ourselves.” If we’ve dyed our hair blue or got our nose pierced, it’s because we are expressing ourselves. We’re still the same person on the inside. But Grandma might think it’s crazy – we’ll save her famous, “Kids these days!” statement for your ears only.

• Please disregard the fact we haven’t

done laundry in several weeks. It’s not that we don’t know how to do it – you taught us right proper – we just prefer washing our tighty whities at home instead of in front of 8 million people. Surely, you can understand the need for privacy. (Also, it’s free at home.)

•

Take us shopping, Ma! We’re probably running low on snacks, toiletries, and other sundries, so if you wanted to take us to the store to stock up on the essentials, we won’t say no. Just sayin’.

THE KIDS’ THANKSGIVING SURVIVAL GUIDE:

•

Show your appreciation for your folks. You may have been gone for a while, but if we said we didn’t miss the heck out of you, we’d be lying. Let us play Mom and Dad again, even if it’s just for a few days or few weeks. Playing empty nester isn’t quite the role for us yet!

• If we offer you a glass of wine, accept it. This little gesture on

our behalf acknowledges that you are no longer a little kid and that you are, in fact, becoming a bona fide adult. Also, now we can get you to volunteer information.

•

Help out around the house. Yes, this means doing the dishes and cleaning up after yourselves. We are not your maid. If you can show us how you’ve matured while you’ve been away at college, we’ll be less likely to treat you like a child and more inclined to treat you as an adult.

•

Respect the house rules. We know that you’ve had a great deal of independence and you’ve probably become a night owl due to studying. If you want to go out with your friends until 1 am, that’s fine, but be quiet when you get back home. Just know that your actions affect more than just yourself while you’re back.

•

Don’t forget to check in with us. We know you aren’t fifteen anymore, but we just want to know where you are and if you’re okay. Even a text would be great – just don’t lose sight of the fact that we are hosting you – rent-free – while you’re home from school.

• Make time to see your high school friends. Chances are,

they’re home for the holidays, too, so head out to your old stomping grounds and get reacquainted.

•

Don’t forget to spend quality time with us. We’ve missed you. Your younger siblings have missed you – please don’t choose your friends over us 100% of the time. Plan your time ahead accordingly, so you can squeeze us all in for awesome conversations. It’s called compromise, baby.

•

Take on extra responsibilities. If your kid brother needs a ride to the movies with his friends, offer to drive him. If we run out of milk, your offer to run to the store will not go unnoticed. Remember how we taught you to be a team player? Now is the time to step up to the plate!

Our Thanksgiving Table ARTICLE MARY ABELN

I

t's that time of year again - the leaves have changed, and temperatures are dropping. We've all traded our summer clothes for the cozy fall and winter items. Big soft sweaters, corduroy pants, fuzzy slippers, and warm pajamas. Being a Minnesotan requires you to look forward to putting your things away and getting the next seasons garb back out again. Somehow it breaks up the dayto-day blahs as winter sets in.

Much like our clothing we also change up our menu's. The food we desire becomes hearty, warm and crunchy. We spend more time inside as winter settles in. The holiday season commands having guests over and being a guest. Once Halloween fun has passed, and all the candy and goblins have gone by the wayside we officially start Thanksgiving. Today we welcome you to our table for Thanksgiving dinner. We've created a menu of our family favorites, and Lisa and Michael Clausen who own The Vintage Wine-Spirits-Beer just down the road from our house at the border of Eden Prairie and Chanhassen have put together a fantastic wine pairing to go with our celebration. Our family has a few wine connoisseurs that are always eager to taste the goods and not being an expert makes it a tough job. I have to rely on the professionals at The Vintage as they are always ready to help. I gave them my menu and discussed the number of guests who will be drinking the wine as well as a price point. From there I received the list that goes with this menu. I adore hosting a party. I'm one of those people who has multiple sets of china and plenty of glassware. But don't you worry, even if you don't

have all the extra bits and pieces you'll be just fine and here's how. Focus on what your guests will enjoy about coming to your home. The food, wine, good company and decor. These are the things that set the day apart from all the others making your guests feel special. You've certainly heard that the presentation is key to a beautiful meal that will taste great and be talked about well after everyone has gone home. Here's what you'll need from the grocery store - Parsley, Apples, Oranges, Lemons, Limes, Pomegranates, little colorful Peppers and anything else that looks good to you. Having these inexpensive items on hand as you prepare your dishes makes it easy to garnish while creating that visual appeal you seek at your table to make that meaningful impression. Slice up the fruit lay it or twist it, place the peppers, be generous with the parsley and fill a bowl with apples, oranges, limes, and lemons for a centerpiece. For the ambiance in your home don't go overboard at the store - head outside. It is the perfect time of year to snip off the dried out heads of the Hydrangeas, cut a few branches with the red berries on them, gather some fallen leaves and you're almost there. Pick up a bouquet or two of flowers and start arranging. Tip - keep your arrangement low if it's going to stay on your table during your meal. If you go with a big or tall idea, just remove it when it's time to eat. It is always great to start off any party with bubbles. Roederer Estate is one of California's premier sparkling wine producers. Their Brut Estate is quite nice but if you want to step it up a notch go with the Brut Estate Rose. A great starter that could also work with the main course. If the bubbles are too much, try a more traditional rose. Elouan Rose is a classic dry rose with great fruit. Pinot Noir has long been a staple at the Thanksgiving table. A very versatile red wine that can pair well with the many flavors of the day. Cloudline from the Willamette Valley in Oregon is one of our favorites. Great Pinot at a great price. If white suits you better a traditional Chardonnay works well. Pine Ridge Dijon Clone Chardonnay fits the bill for a bottle of wine that will stand up to this meal. These wines will work well with the pie also, but if you need a little more sweetness with your dessert try a lovely Sauternes or a late harvest Semillon. Remember - A wine basket gift from The Vintage always makes a great hostess gift. Happy Thanksgiving.
