LIFESTYLE LETTER

Where Georgia Comes Together October has a way of bringing people together - around a beautifully set table, along the colorful streets of Marietta Square, in support of a meaningful cause or on a quiet stretch of Georgia coastline. These are the moments when good friends gather, new connections are made and memories are created. This issue celebrates the people, places and experiences that make fall in Georgia so special. Our cover story brings together six incredibly talented chefs and one shared vision: to showcase Atlanta’s and the region's dynamic culinary scene through an unforgettable private dinner. Highly acclaimed Chef Jernard Wells was the creative force behind the vision, thoughtfully bringing together a remarkable group of chefs, each with a distinctive style and personal story. Together, they created something even more meaningful - a celebration of creativity, collaboration and the exceptional culinary talent shaping the Southeast’s vibrant food scene. That same creative spirit fills Marietta Square during Chalktoberfest, an annual tradition that transforms the streets into an extraordinary outdoor gallery. With breathtaking chalk art, live entertainment and the popular Craft Beer Festival, it is one of those signature community experiences that reminds us how fortunate we are to call this place home. We also celebrate Friday Night Lights, where Walton, Pope, Lassiter, Wheeler, Kell, and Sprayberry High School football brings together students, families and neighbors, capturing the school spirit, traditions, and community pride that make fall in Marietta so special. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and within these pages, we pause to honor those who have faced the disease, celebrate survivors and remember the loved ones whose lives and legacies continue to inspire us. The familiar pink ribbon carries a powerful message of courage, hope and the importance of continued awareness. For those ready to get away, we travel to Georgia’s coast to explore four unforgettable barrier islands - Jekyll, Sapelo, Cumberland and St. Simons. Each offers its own distinctive blend of natural beauty, rich history and timeless coastal charm, making fall an ideal season to discover - or rediscover - these remarkable destinations. From an inspired culinary gathering and a beloved Marietta tradition to stories of strength and coastal escapes, our October issue celebrates the many ways Georgia brings us together, feeds our creativity and gives us reasons to explore. We hope you enjoy every page. Warm regards, K E V I N K A S E TA , P U B L I S H E R @EASTCOBBCITYLIFESTYLE

SIX ACCLAIMED CHEFS, ONE UNFORGETTABLE DINNER, AND THE PERSONAL JOURNEYS BEHIND SOME OF THE REGION’S MOST DISTINCTIVE CULINARY VOICES. Atlanta’s acclaimed culinary scene is defined not only by extraordinary talent, but by what emerges when its finest chefs come together. As plans heat up for the upcoming Georgia Food + Wine Festival, organizers are building on an unforgettable evening. After years in the making, a long-held vision came to life as six distinguished chefs gathered

for the inaugural Chef’s Table Expereince - an intimate celebration of culinary depth, diversity, and artistry. Serving as lead chef and creative force, Chef Jernard Wells curated and executed the vision, personally selecting each chef for the distinctive talent and perspective they would bring to the table. The result was more than an exceptional meal; it was a defining culinary moment shaped by shared purpose, mutual respect, and a vision finally realized. Known as “The Family Chef” and “The Chef of Love,” Chef Jernard has earned millions of followers through his unmistakable warmth, bold Southern flavors, and belief in the connective power of food. Although he once envisioned becoming an attorney, his culinary story began alongside his late father, a chef with Creole roots, and took an unexpected turn after his father passed away. At just 16, Jernard opened his first restaurant to help support his mother - a beginning that has evolved into an extraordinary career and, most recently, the opening of his ninth restaurant Cornbread & Butter in Grayson, Georgia. His distinctive flavor profiles reflect that heritage, as well as French and Asian culinary training and experiences abroad in Malaysia and the Philippines. Today, the celebrated television host and bestselling cookbook author is known for New Soul Kitchen and New Soul Kitchen Remix, with appearances on Food Network, Cooking Channel, and the Oprah Winfrey Network. A James Beard Househonored chef, his recent Daytime Emmy nomination for Savor the City fulfilled a longtime bucket-list dream - another milestone in a remarkable journey. For Chef Cory Hinton, Chef Jernard’s influence reaches far beyond the kitchen beginning at a Chattanooga festival, where Hinton’s name was drawn from a hat to apprentice under the acclaimed chef. Later invited to serve as Chef Jernard's sous chef, Hinton walked nearly

15 miles to and from work for nine weeks - a remarkable commitment that began a decade-long bond rooted in mentorship, brotherhood, and unwavering belief. Hinton’s determination grew from a deeply personal desire to rewrite his story. Incarcerated at 18, he emerged committed to building a different life and showing his children that mistakes need not determine their destiny. Today, childhood memories of his grandfather’s Alabama garden and a treasured fish recipe honoring his late father, Makail Musa Mohamed, live on through Boulevard Famous Fish. Pairing Creole-Cajun fish with sweet, Creole-inspired coleslaw, Hinton gives every guest “a piece of me.” As he prepares to take the Chattanooga concept on the road, he credits Jernard - the mentor he considers a brother and father figure - with seeing his potential and helping him transform a second chance into a meaningful legacy. Chef Richard Ingraham embodied that same spirit of passion and purpose whose extraordinary talent brought another distinct perspective to the evening. For Ingraham, food has always represented love and family - an enduring philosophy that has guided nearly three decades in the culinary arts. Born and raised in Miami and formally trained at the Art Institute of Atlanta, he found his calling as a private chef, ultimately becoming the longtime personal chef to NBA legend Dwyane Wade and his family. His work with elite athletes and entertainers has placed him at the intersection of fine cuisine and sports nutrition, where every dish must deliver both exceptional flavor and purposeful nourishment. Wade describes Ingraham as “a diversified chef that can cook it all, for all,” adding that he “puts his heart and soul into his dishes.” CONTINUED >

15

Yet behind the celebrated clientele is a deeply personal approach. Ingraham’s family influences each dish he creates, and the joy of watching guests experience his food continues to inspire him. That balance of passion, pleasure and well-being shaped his cookbooks, Eating Well to Win and LOVE: My Love Expressed Through Food. Whether fueling peak performance or gathering people around a table, Ingraham hopes guests feel the intention within every bite - a reflection of the principle that has carried him throughout his career “Always cook with passion and purpose.” For Chef Tregaye Wright, food has always been about possibility. Her first inspiration came from her grandmother, Sherry, who delighted in blending cultures with Southern traditions - sometimes enthusiastically, as Chef Tregaye remembers, adding newly discovered jerk seasoning to

nearly everything for over a week! Beyond flavor, her grandmother instilled in her the confidence to experiment, create and make every dish her own. That spirit carried Chef Tregaye through profound loss. At 19, she unexpectedly lost her mother to a blood clot and, soon after, her grandmother, leaving her to help raise three younger siblings. Resilience became part of her story and ultimately her success. Wright went on to become the firstever African American woman to win Season 12 of Food Network Star, published author of Kitchen Conversations with Chef Tregaye, and the host of Tregaye’s Way, one of the early culinary shows on Oprah Winfrey’s network. Today, her television career continues on Prime Video, extending a platform she built by learning the business while remaining unmistakably herself.

"MY ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO LEAVE AN INDELIBLE IMPRESSION ON EVERY PERSON WHO HAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO TASTE MY FOOD ALBEIT AT MY RESTAURANT OR AT SPECIAL DINNERS LIKE THE ONE WE CURATE AT GEORGIA FOOD + WINE FESTIVAL," SAID CHEF JERNARD WELLS.

16

C HE F ’S SE LE CT ION | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

Some of her proudest work happens beyond television. Through her nonprofit, Any Given Supper, Chef Tregaye provides young people with culinary training, tools, real-world experiences and something equally important - confidence. For Chef Tregaye, success is not simply about creating memorable food, but creating possibilities for the next generation. While Chef Tregaye's journey is rooted in resilience and creating opportunity, Chef Alejandro Valdivia has forged an equally distinctive path - one shaped by adventure, exploration and the wild. For Chef Alejandro Valdivia, the kitchen has never been confined by four walls. Known as “A Wild Chef,” the Cuban-born outdoorsman, traveler and culinary adventurer finds inspiration in the places he explores and the ingredients he encounters along the way—whether cooking over an open fire or working with wild game such as venison, duck and even octopus. A Le Cordon Bleu graduate, Valdivia brought that fearless approach to MasterChef: Legends, where he emerged as a Top 4 semifinalist, later earning an invitation to return for MasterChef: Back to Win. Today, Chef Alejandro turns that same adventurous spirit into extraordinary private dining experiences, pop-ups and culinary journeys that blur the line between chef and storyteller. His travels have taken him across the American West cooking in the elements and internationally through his Chasing Wild Flavor project, exploring the connection between food, culture and place. For Valdivia, an unforgettable meal begins long before the plate reaches the table - it begins with the hunt, the landscape, the people and the story behind every ingredient. Rounding out this remarkable group is Chattanoogabased Chef Antonio Tate, known as “The Sneakerhead Chef,” whose approach to food is grounded in flavor, culture and connection. Tate’s earliest culinary lessons

came beside his father - a biochemist and restaurateur who taught him to think of food as chemistry. Today, that foundation comes alive through bold combinations of Southern traditions, global spices and cultural influences, all delivered with a distinctive sense of style. As chef and owner of Party Bites Kitchen + Catering, Chef Antonio has grown a childhood fascination with food into a multifaceted culinary brand centered on creating memorable experiences. Yet Tate’s work reaches well beyond the kitchen. From intimate dinners and large-scale catering to community events and hands-on culinary experiences, he uses food as a way to bring people together. His “Sneakerhead Chef” identity playfully connects his love of sneaker culture with elevated cuisine, while experiences such as Spice Theory invite guests to explore the cultures and stories behind global spices. Whether teaching, catering or gathering people around his table, Tate approaches hospitality with intention - blending bold flavor, creativity and community into meals designed to mean something long after the last bite. Together, the Georgia Food + Wine Festival and these six chefs created an experience that celebrated not only exceptional cuisine, but the remarkable stories, journeys and connections that give it meaning. Festival Dates: April 1-4, 2027 2nd Annual Chef’s Table Experience: April 1 georgiafoodandwinefestival.com

Under The Lights Six distinguished schools celebrate football, tradition, character, and the communities that make Friday nights unforgettable. High school football is far more than a game - during the season - it's the heartbeat of a community. Beneath the stadium lights, perseverance, pride, and belonging take center stage as players, coaches and trainers are joined by marching bands, cheer and dance teams, families, alumni and devoted fans. Behind the scenes, countless professionals prepare the fields, care for the facilities and make each game possible. Together, they create something larger than any final score - a shared experience that brings generations together, strengthens school spirit, and reminds us that everyone has a place under the Friday night lights. Across East Cobb - Marietta, six schools carry their own proud traditions onto the field: Wheeler, Walton, Sprayberry, Lassiter, Pope and Kell High Schools. Each program brings a distinct story, yet all share a commitment to teamwork, resilience, and the communities they proudly represent.

POPE HIGH SCHOOL

At Pope High School, football is rooted in something deeper than competition. Greyhound pride is built on belonging, shared responsibility, and the belief that every person contributes to the team from the athletes on the field to the families in the stands. A meaningful tradition is the annual selection of an offensive or defensive lineman to wear the No. 70 jersey in honor of Matt Hobby. A 2006 Pope graduate, Hobby courageously battled Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer. His legacy continues on Matt Hobby Field and through the player chosen each season to carry his number. In 2024, Pope celebrated a memorable victory over Sprayberry on Matt Hobby Night, handing the team its only regular-season loss. Head Football Coach Sean O’Sullivan describes the program through “Pope PRIDE” - Positive Attitude, Resiliency, Integrity, Dependability and Effort—values intended to shape young people long after the final whistle.

Walton High School

Friday nights bring those vivid values to life. Pregame tailgates welcome faculty members, families, and guests while recognition ceremonies honor those who strengthen the school and surrounding community. The band, cheerleaders, DJ, student section, parent volunteers and a dedicated team of dads in the press box create an atmosphere filled with energy and nostalgia. At the end of each game, players, band members and cheerleaders gather as one Greyhound family. “No matter what happens during those 48 minutes, we are there to support, encourage and celebrate one another,” said Assistant Principal and Interim Athletic Director Lindsay Barnette. “That shared moment captures what being a Greyhound is all about: community, pride and knowing that we are always stronger together.”

Wheeler High School

WHEELER HIGH SCHOOL

At Wheeler High School, Friday nights are electric and welcoming, bringing students, families, faculty, alumni, and neighbors together in support of the Wildcats. The band, cheerleaders and spirited student section energize the stadium, but the program’s purpose reaches far beyond the field. Head Football Coach Travis Roland begins his inaugural season at Wheeler with a team-first philosophy expressed through F.A.M.I.L.Y. - Forget About Me, I Love You. “If we can teach a group of players to truly become a family, that’s when something special happens,” Coach Roland said. His philosophy reflects Wheeler’s goal of developing student-athletes who compete with excellence, lead with character and serve their community. CONTINUED >

21

Community engagement is equally central to the Wildcat tradition. Through the annual Shop with a Wildcat initiative, football players help local children shop for the holidays, building relationships and creating memories beyond the game. Another favorite tradition is the Wheeler Feeder School Mascot Race, held at halftime during the Youth Night football game. Mascots from the elementary and middle schools compete in a spirited 40-yard dash, creating tremendous excitement and helping younger students feel connected to Wheeler long before they arrive on campus. That culture of excellence extends across Wheeler athletics. The boys basketball program recently captured its 11th state championship - and fifth in seven years - while finishing undefeated against Georgia competition. Together, Wheeler’s traditions and achievements reflect a school where athletic success is measured not only by championships, but also by character, connection and service.

WALTON HIGH SCHOOL

At Walton High School, Friday night football connects generations of Raiders. Before the team takes the field, a senior leads the traditional Walton charge - a ritual that began long before Head Football Coach Daniel Brunner arrived and continues to link today’s players with those who wore the uniform before them. That tradition is strengthened by a simple motto Ball Down, Ball Out! for Brunner, the words represent far more than game-night intensity. They reflect a commitment to preparation, accountability and consistent effort - doing the work throughout the week so the team is ready when Friday arrives.

22

S CH OOL SP ORTS | ARTS + CU LT U RE

That dedication has produced the longest playoff streak in Walton football history. The Raiders have reached the postseason for nine consecutive seasons, winning 15 playoff games during that span - one more than the program recorded in the previous 41 years combined. On game nights, packed stands, enthusiastic student section and generations of families create the unmistakable energy of Raider Nation. Supporters continue attending long after their own children have graduated, preserving a sense of connection that reaches well beyond a single season. That unity extends across Walton athletics, where student-athletes regularly attend one another’s competitions and celebrate every team as part of one school community. Through sports, students develop discipline, perseverance, leadership and the ability to navigate both success and adversity - lessons that shape not only stronger athletes, but well-rounded young adults.

SPRAYBERRY HIGH SCHOOL

At Sprayberry High School, Friday night football is shaped by generations of tradition and an enduring sense of Yellow Jacket pride. With one of Cobb County’s oldest alumni bases—including loyal supporters who have not missed a game in more than 20 years - the stands at Jim Frazier Stadium reflect a community whose connection to the school extends long after graduation.

Sprayberry Kelli Stoudenmire Photographer

That legacy is captured in the program’s guiding belief: “The last names may graduate, but the standard never changes.” It is a standard reflected in the players’ commitment throughout the week and in a memorable 2024 season, when the Yellow Jackets finished 11–2, captured the Region 6-AAAAA championship and advanced to the state quarterfinals. At Sprayberry, victory belongs to the entire school. Following a win, football players celebrate alongside the band and cheerleaders in a tradition that recognizes the many people who make game night possible. The moment embodies a simple but powerful understanding: it takes everyone to win.

Pope High School

Courtesy Walton High School

“Our football team understands that it takes all of us—cheerleaders, band members and football players,” said Dr. Nathan Autry, Assistant Principal and Athletic Director. “After wins, all of us celebrate together.” For Sprayberry, athletics is ultimately a vehicle for developing character, navigating adversity and preparing young people to become leaders in their community. That purpose—supported by students, families and deeply devoted alumni—is the heart of the Yellow Jacket tradition.

KELL HIGH SCHOOL

At Kell High School, the unmistakable sound of the Longhorn Cowbell marks far more than a football victory. It celebrates the collective work of players, coaches, students, families and an entire community that proudly stands behind them. When the bell rings across The Stockyard, everyone knows it is a great night to be a Longhorn. CONTINUED >

23

That spirit is guided by a simple challenge: “Doesn’t Matter. Get Better.” Regardless of the opponent, the previous result or the circumstances, Kell athletes are expected to keep improving - a mindset grounded in accountability, resilience and consistent effort in athletics, academics and life. The football program’s proud history includes three Final Four appearances and three Atlanta Journal-Constitution Super 11 selections: Brian Randolph, Jonathan Dwyer and Moonie Gipson. That legacy has come full circle through Dwyer, a former NFL player who returned to Kell to coach and mentor today’s Longhorns, including fellow Super 11 honoree Gipson. Friday nights at The Stockyard unite generations through tailgating, youth football and packed stands filled with students, staff, parents, alumni and neighbors. The community’s support also crosses traditional lines. Football players have even reversed roles by attending band competitions and cheering for the classmates who energize them on game nights.

“At Kell, athletics is about more than winning - it is about developing students, building community and creating Longhorns who are prepared for life,” said Oneisha Young, Assistant Principal and Athletic Director. It is a philosophy that places students first and values education, character, leadership and service long after the final score.

LASSITER HIGH SCHOOL

At Lassiter High School, the heart of Trojan football is captured in a rally cry repeated after every victory “We ask no quarter, we give no quarter!” More than words, it represents the toughness, accountability and confidence that Head Football Coach Dr. Sean Thom works to instill in his players. “The rally cry reminds us that victories are earned together and that our standard does not change, regardless of the opponent,” Coach Thom said. “It has become part of the identity of Lassiter Trojan football.”

Kell High School

That identity comes alive on Friday nights, when excitement builds throughout the school day and carries into the stadium. Students, families, faculty and community members fill the stands, while the Trojan student section brings an unmistakable energy that makes game night a defining part of the Lassiter experience. The support extends across the school’s athletic programs, with students and families showing up for one another and creating a culture in which every athlete feels valued. For Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Scott Kelly, that collective encouragement is central to what makes the Lassiter community special.

Kell High School

Athletics also gives students lessons that reach beyond competition - from discipline, resilience and leadership to time management and overcoming adversity. The friendships built and challenges shared help prepare Trojans not simply to compete, but to carry confidence, character and perseverance into every part of life. cobbk12.org

T HE A R T OF C OMING T OGE T HE R CHALKTOBERFEST BRINGS ART, CREATIVITY AND COMMUNITY TO MARIETTA SQUARE

ARTICLE BY EAST COBB CITY LIFESTYLE

O UR TOWN | ARTS + C ULT U RE

There’s something magical about Marietta Square in the fall. Add brilliant works of art unfolding right beneath your feet, live music drifting from Glover Park and the energy of thousands of people gathering downtown, and you have one of the community’s most colorful traditions - Chalktoberfest.

Returning October 10 and 11, the internationally recognized Chalktoberfest transforms Marietta Square into an open-air gallery. Award-winning, professional chalk artists from across the country and around the world spend the weekend creating intricate works of art - one colorful layer at a time. Part of the experience is simply watching it all come to life. Visitors can stroll the Square, meet the artists, browse local arts and crafts vendors, enjoy food throughout downtown and listen to local bands performing in Glover Park. The festival is free and open to the public, making it an easy fall outing for families, friends and visitors of all ages. "When most people think of a chalk festival, they think of sidewalk chalk. Chalktoberfest is so much more - it is a case of seeing is believing! When you stroll Chalktoberfest, you will see incredible masterpieces created right before your eyes. Talented artists from around the world transform pavement into stunning 2D and 3D works of art. Some pieces are so immersive that you

can actually become part of the artwork - whether you are “riding” a llama or sitting atop a Georgia Bulldog!", said Executive Director Sally Macaulay. Chalktoberfest also feels right at home in a community where the arts have become part of the fabric of everyday life. From galleries and museums to public art, live performances, Art Walks and festivals, Marietta offers plenty of ways to experience creativity beyond traditional gallery walls. Chalktoberfest takes that idea one step further, quite literally putting art in the streets and inviting everyone to experience it up close. For children, that exposure can be especially meaningful. for the Arts connects participation in the arts with social-emotional development, learning and academic success. At Chalktoberfest, those benefits come to life as children watch an ordinary stretch of pavement transform into something extraordinary—sparking curiosity, conversation and perhaps inspiring a young artist to pick up a piece of chalk, paintbrush or pencil of their own. On Sunday, they can do exactly that. The Community Chalk Competition gives local artists the opportunity to move from spectator to creator. Open to individuals and teams, the competition welcomes different ages and skill levels to claim their own space and create an original chalk masterpiece. Teams create from 10:30am to 12:30pm, while individual artists have until 2:00pm. Registration is required, and winners receive prizes. It’s a chance for families, friends and aspiring artists to become part of the Chalktoberfest tradition themselves. To register, visit festival website. Saturday brings a different kind of creativity to the Square with the annual Craft Beer Festival from Noon to 5:00pm Guests can sample more than 120 local craft beers, ciders and seltzers, along with more than 20 varieties of wine. Each participant receives a collectible 2026 Chalktoberfest souvenir cup. The ticketed event sells out each year, so advance tickets are encouraged.

Behind the weekend is the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art, Metro Atlanta’s only museum dedicated solely to American fine art. Chalktoberfest supports the Museum’s mission of “building community through art,” and admission to the Museum is free throughout the weekend. Once you experience Chalktoberfest and see the creativity and talent firsthand, you will understand why people come back year after year. Whether you come to admire the artistry, create something of your own, discover a local vendor or simply spend a beautiful fall afternoon on the Square, Chalktoberfest is a colorful reminder that art has a wonderful way of bringing people together. "It's an experience you won’t want to miss - and once you’ve been - you’ll come back every year to see what the artists create next!,” shared Macaulay. Chalktoberfest.com

Georgia’s Islands of Discovery Driftwood Beach Jekyll Island

Coastal escapes where history, natural beauty and adventure meet ARTICLE BY ELIZABETH FRANCIS

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TRAV E L

Cumberland Island Wild Horses St. Simons Museum and Lighthouse

Georgia’s coastline may stretch for only about 100 miles, but its barrier islands offer a remarkable collection of landscapes, stories and unforgettable experiences. Here, windswept beaches meet maritime forests, moss-draped oaks shade historic pathways and generations of coastal residents have preserved traditions found nowhere else. Jekyll, Sapelo, Cumberland and St. Simons islands each reveal a different side of Georgia’s coast, inviting travelers to explore their natural beauty, amazing history and unmistakable Southern character. Once a private winter retreat for some of America’s most prominent families, Jekyll Island blends Gilded Age elegance with relaxed coastal adventure. The grand cottages of the Jekyll Island Club Historic District recall a time when families including the Rockefellers, Pulitzers and Vanderbilts gathered along the island’s quiet shoreline. Today, visitors can tour the district, ride bicycles beneath ancient live oaks or wander along Driftwood Beach, where sun-bleached trees create one of Georgia’s most photographed coastal scenes. Jekyll is also home to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, the state’s only sea turtle education and rehabilitation facility. Through exhibits, programs and a working veterinary hospital, the center offers visitors a closer look at the conservation efforts protecting these treasured marine animals. With miles of beaches, scenic trails and abundant wildlife, Jekyll provides an engaging balance of recreation, history and environmental discovery. Farther north, Sapelo Island offers an experience shaped by pristine landscapes and a deeply rooted cultural legacy. Accessible primarily by ferry, the island feels beautifully removed from the pace of modern life. Salt marshes, maritime forests and undeveloped beaches surround visitors with the quiet rhythms of Georgia’s coast. CONTINUED >

Jekyll Island Bike Path

Sapelo is especially significant as the home of Hog Hammock, one of the nation’s remaining Gullah-Geechee communities. Many residents are descendants of enslaved West Africans who retained traditions, language, foodways and cultural practices across generations. Guided island tours introduce visitors to this living heritage while also highlighting landmarks such as Reynolds Mansion, the Sapelo Island Lighthouse and the island’s expansive natural areas. A visit to Sapelo is more than a coastal excursion; it is an opportunity to understand and honor a remarkable chapter of Georgia history. Cumberland Island, Georgia’s largest and southernmost barrier island, is defined by its untamed beauty. Reached by ferry from St. Marys, the island welcomes travelers with secluded beaches, towering dunes and maritime forests filled with live oaks, palmettos and twisting canopies. Its famous free-roaming horses often appear along beaches, trails and historic clearings, adding to Cumberland’s sense of mystery. Among the island’s most compelling sites are the ruins of Dungeness, the grand Carnegie family estate that once stood along the southern end of Cumberland. The crumbling walls remain surrounded by open lawns and coastal wilderness, creating an unforgettable intersection of nature and history. Hiking, camping, wildlife watching and beachcombing make Cumberland especially appealing to visitors seeking solitude and adventure.

Sapelo Island

St. Simons Island offers a livelier coastal escape while preserving centuries of history. Its walkable Pier Village is filled with locally owned shops and restaurants serving fresh seafood and regional favorites. Nearby, the St. Simons Lighthouse and museum share the island’s maritime story, while panoramic views from the tower stretch across the sound and neighboring islands. Visitors can also explore Fort Frederica National Monument, search for the island’s carved Tree Spirits or simply bicycle beneath moss-covered oaks. From coastal dining and charming village streets to beaches and historic landmarks, St. Simons brings together the pleasures of a classic seaside getaway. Together, these four islands tell a rich and varied story. Whether drawn to Jekyll’s historic grandeur, Sapelo’s enduring heritage, Cumberland’s wild landscapes or St. Simons’ coastal hospitality, travelers will find that Georgia’s barrier islands offer far more than beautiful beaches. They invite visitors to slow down, explore more deeply, and uncover the rich character, history and natural beauty that define the coast.

THE PINK FIGHT!

G IV IN G BAC K | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

TA K E A C T I O N T H I S B R E A S T C A N C E R A W A R E N E S S M O N T H

Amid the pumpkins, leaves and scarecrows, October carries an important message. Pink ribbons appear in storefronts and throughout our communities as reminders to honor those affected by breast cancer, celebrate survivors and remember loved ones. According to the American Cancer Society, although women are diagnosed most often, men can develop the disease as well. Breast cancer reaches across ages, neighborhoods and families, touching mothers, fathers, daughters, sisters, friends, co-workers and caregivers. Breast Cancer Awareness Month encourages each of us to turn attention into action. Learn your personal risk factors and speak with a health-care provider about when mammograms should begin and how often they are recommended based on age, family history and individual risk. Those with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, identified genetic mutations or other risk factors may benefit from discussing earlier or additional screening with their healthcare provider. Being familiar with your body and attentive to changes is also important. Any new or unusual developments should be shared

with a health-care professional. While not every change is cause for concern, seeking timely guidance can provide reassurance and support early detection. There are many meaningful ways to help. Offer a ride to an appointment, prepare a meal, assist with errands or simply listen. A thoughtful message and consistent presence can help someone navigating treatment feel less alone. Wear pink, encourage a friend to schedule a screening, join a community walk, volunteer or donate to an organization supporting research and families. Upcoming events include the Georgia 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, covering 30 miles across Cobb County October 3–4; Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure October 17; and The Pink Agenda’s Atlanta Gala at The Dogwood October 22. This October, let every pink ribbon become a call to act: schedule the appointment, extend a hand and help ensure no one faces breast cancer alone. Through awareness, practical support and resolve, our community can turn an October symbol into lasting impact.

The Amber Hour BOURBON, THREE WAYS Bourbon carries a certain mystique: dim lighting, hushed tones, a vocabulary all its own. Cut through it and here's what you'll actually find: a spirit that does more with three ingredients than most bottles manage with ten. Shaken with lemon and honey, it goes bright. Stirred with bitters over one good cube, it turns deep and unhurried. Add vermouth and a proper cherry, and you've got the drink that's been quietly holding up hotel bars for a century. One good bottle, a few minutes, a comfortable chair. Everything else is just details.

40

H AP PY H OU R | FO O D + BE VE RAGE

ONE BOTTLE, THREE DRINKS The Thyme-Honey Smash The easiest pour if you're new to bourbon INGREDIENTS: • 2 oz bourbon • ¾ oz freshly squeezed lemon juice • ½ oz honey syrup (equal parts honey and warm water) • 3–4 fresh thyme sprigs, plus one to garnish • Large ice sphere or cube To make: Press the thyme gently in the bottom of a shaker (enough to wake up the oils, not enough to shred it). Add bourbon, lemon, honey syrup, and ice. Shake hard, strain over a large ice sphere, and finish with a thyme sprig and a strip of lemon peel. Honey syrup keeps for two weeks in the fridge and improves nearly every whiskey drink it touches.

The Old Fashioned Four ingredients. That's the drink. INGREDIENTS: • 2 oz bourbon • ¼ oz demerara or simple syrup • 2–3 dashes aromatic bitters • Large ice cube • Orange peel, to garnish To make: Stir bourbon, syrup, and bitters with ice for a full 30 seconds (longer than feels reasonable — the dilution is part of the recipe). Strain over one large cube. Pinch the orange peel skin-side down over the drink so the oils mist across the surface, run it around the rim, and drop it in. Demerara syrup, two parts raw sugar to one part water, brings a toffee depth that plain sugar can't reach. Classic: orange peel only. Dressed up: add a brandied cherry alongside the peel for a little sweetness and color.

The Manhattan The drink that built a century of hotel bars. INGREDIENTS: • 2 oz bourbon • 1 oz sweet vermouth • 2 dashes aromatic bitters • Cocktail cherry, to garnish To make: Stir everything with plenty of ice until the mixing glass frosts over, then strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a real cocktail cherry (dark, rich, worth every penny of the jar). Park the coupe in the freezer while you stir. A warm glass undoes thirty seconds of careful work in about a minute.

BOURBON GOES INTO THE BARREL CLEAR AS WATER. EVERY BIT OF THAT AMBER COMES FROM THE WOOD. CONTINUED > OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / E ASTC O BB

Speak Bourbon Like You Mean It THE WHISKEY AISLE READS LIKE A SECRET HANDSHAKE. HERE'S THE QUICK TRANSLATION. • Wheated: softer, sweeter, leans toward baked goods. • High-Rye: more pepper, more spice, more backbone. • Single Barrel: one barrel, one personality, quirks included. • Bottled-in-Bond: one distillery, four years minimum, 100 proof. • Finished: aged a second time in port, sherry, or rum casks.
