As we turn the page on another year, January offers us a powerful opportunity to reflect on meaningful moments that shaped 2024 and set our intentions for the year ahead. This issue is dedicated to health and wellness a cornerstone of personal and collective growth. Last year we saw the power of connection, resilience, and community as we navigated challenges and celebrated successes. From the launching of new businesses, to small personal victories to larger community strides, every step forward contributed to a stronger foundation for the future. As we reflect on these moments, we're reminded of the importance of selfcare, intentional living and the relationships that uplift and sustain us. As our team looks ahead at 2025, our commitment is to building and growing. Setting new goals, embracing challenges, prioritizing well-being and lifting others through stories. This issue is filled with ideas on staying active, eating well, overcoming challenges or realizing dreams. Whether you're embarking on a fitness journey, exploring mindfulness practices or simply looking for ways to live more fully, we share our heartfelt well-wishes for an amazing year ahead! GIA PERGOLINI MAKING WAVES, BREAKING RECORDS, AND WINNING GOLD IN THE PARALYMPIC POOL

At just 20 years old, Gia Pergolini has already made a splash on the international stage, securing her place in Paralympic history as a two-time gold medalist. The Roswell native who’s now studying at Florida International University represented the U.S. at the 2020 and 2024 Summer Paralympic Games. “Words can't describe how honored and grateful I am to compete for the greatest country in the world,” explained Gia. “It was so surreal and a moment I will never forget.” Gia took her first dip into the pool at 4 years old and started swimming competitively at age 5. “Swimming was my passion," she said, though growing up, she also dabbled in other sports like lacrosse, soccer, tennis, and gymnastics. However, at the age of 9, her life took a significant turn when she was diagnosed with Stargardt's Disease, a genetic eye condition that causes the gradual loss of central vision. This rare diagnosis brought clarity to her focus on swimming. Her first international breakthrough came at the 2017 World Para Swimming Championships, where she earned her first silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke at the age of 13. She won silver again in 2019. By the time the 2020 Paralympics rolled around, Gia was ready to make a bigger splash. At just 17 years old, she broke the world record in the 100-meter backstroke during the qualifying heats, then shattered her own record in the finals, winning her first Paralympic gold medal. Gia continued to ride the high tide of success into the 2024 Summer Paralympics, bringing home another gold in the 100-meter backstroke and a silver in the 50-meter freestyle. “It's always an unreal feeling touching the wall and knowing you did it,” Gia admitted. "Realizing everything I worked and trained hard for, all the sacrifices I made in the past was worth it.”

Despite her success, Gia stays grounded. “Sometimes when I show people my medals, it still feels surreal,” she said. “Seeing their amazement reminds me just how far I’ve come. My friends and family often say, ‘Only a tiny percentage of the world makes it to the Olympics or Paralympics.’ I’m blessed and honored.” The road to gold, however, wasn’t always smooth. Gia credits her team—including swim coach Ian Murray from Dynamo Swim Club and personal trainer Larry Keaton, who’s been with her since the start—for keeping her focused and afloat during tough times. “They have challenged me mentally and physically, helping me become a better athlete,” Gia explained. “Most important, my family—especially my mom Alice—who has guided and supported me, even at my lowest moments. I love her more than life itself. My brothers Matt and David are always there to pump me up and try to guide me from their experiences. Without my father Bill, I wouldn't be the tough, never-quit, headstrong person that I am today.” Though she’s taking a brief break to finish college, Gia plans to train for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games. Her message to others is one of resilience and authenticity: “Be yourself. People have doubted or criticized me, but I had to learn that their opinions don’t define me. As long as you stay true to who you are and keep a positive mindset, you’re unstoppable.” Driven by a sense of purpose and supported by those who believe in her, Gia Pergolini is not only breaking records in the pool but also redefining what it means to be a champion. Gia has been awarded the Sarah Woolf Spirit Award by the Center for the Visually Impaired in Atlanta. “CVI helped me tremendously when I was first diagnosed with Stargardt’s Disease. I’m incredibly grateful,” she said, looking forward to attending the 2025 Night Visions Gala: Visions of Hope in March.

STAY 4EVER YOUNG 20

S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

There is so much beauty in aging, yet it might be difficult to see if you don’t look and feel your best. The aging process is something we will all go through and today there are so many means to glide through it gracefully. Melissa Silvia, owner of 4Ever Young Anti-Aging Solutions located in Marietta, knows that there is a time in life when we will give notice to these changes and might not like what we see. From loss of energy, to facial wrinkles,

received Botox and filler. This interested me even more, so I decided to go to school for my aesthetician and laser practitioner license”, says Mrs. Silvia. After receiving her credentials, she was excited to explore entrepreneurial options such as owning her own medspa. Mrs. Silvia remarks, “My daughter was a year and a half at the time and continually sick. Unfortunately, as a result of her repeated sickness I was let go. My husband and I talked more

"THE MULTITUDE OF SERVICES OFFERED IS AMAZING AND THEY BRING A COMPANY OF WELLNESS...” to lack of libido, 4Ever Young AntiAging Solutions has a specific plan for the care that you are seeking. As a Registered Nurse, Mrs. Silva worked in dermatology, where she assisted in surgery. This is where her interest in skin-related issues blossomed. “Working under the supervision of the doctor, I performed laser treatments, microneedling with PRP, chemical peels, as well as acne facials. I transitioned to a facial plastic surgeon’s office, working beside the doctor in surgery, as well as in the exam room with cosmetic patients who

The multitude of services offered is amazing and they bring a company of wellness that most places do not offer.” Mrs. Silvia got a first-person account in her experience as an esthetician on the problems and issues people may face as they age. She laments, “ So many women and men suffer from side effects of imbalanced hormones that they think are normal. These side effects such as insomnia, hot flashes, joint CONTINUED >

Maintain clear vision and a clear future with Wildwood Eyecare.

ARTICLE BY CATHERINE JAMES

EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

With screen times reaching all-time highs in the digital age, today's generations are more susceptible to vision problems than ever before. While the New Year often brings with it miles on the treadmill, early morning alarms and new eating habits that encourage physical health and wellness, it may be time to look beyond our physique and toward other areas of the body, like our eyes, in 2025.

Drs. Heather Zutaut, O.D., Stuart Tasman, O.D., Nicole Mardak, O.D.

“This New Year, commit to proactive eye care! Early detection of eye conditions can prevent irreversible damage and allow for clear, comfortable vision to last a lifetime.” - Dr. Nicole Mardak Whether you've been managing vision problems and prioritizing eyesight your entire life, or you've never considered the ramifications of blue light and UV rays until now, Dr. Nicole Mardak of Wildwood Eyecare is prepared to work with you to restore or preserve your 20/20 vision through every step of your eyesight journey. Full-scope optometrist Dr. Mardak began her career at Wildwood Eyecare almost 12 years ago and has witnessed the practice's astounding advancements in ocular disease detection, prevention and treatment in her time. She urges everyone not to overlook optometrists as integral parts to any healthcare team. Not just for their role in safeguarding patients' eyesight, but also because of the insight they're able to provide regarding overall health status using retinal imaging. She explains "Retinal imaging has become part of the wellness visit and allows us to detect early signs of glaucoma, macular degeneration, as well as

systemic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, and auto-immune disorders, just to name a few. An examination of the inside, back lining of the eyes, (the retina) is the only place in the body that non-invasively gives doctors a view of the vascular and nervous system, and therefore gives information about overall health." In addition to state-of-the-art testing like this and thoughtfully tailored treatment and prevention plans, Wildwood Eyecare caters to patients in ways above and beyond what is common of most medical practices. They reserve ample appointment time for patients in an effort to truly get to know them and their unique medical needs; they invest in the latest diagnostic equipment to support their mission to maintain eye health and vision for a lifetime; and they offer lenses and contacts tailored to condition, occupation or hobby in addition to frame lines and pieces patients can't get anywhere else in their widely-known optical boutique. "This New Year, commit to proactive eye care! Early detection of eye conditions can prevent irreversible damage and allow for clear, comfortable vision to last a lifetime," exclaims Dr. Mardak.

HEALTHY HABITS FOR CLEAR VISION IN 2025

While long lasting vision and healthy eyes start with a team of trustworthy optometrists like the ones at Wildwood Eyecare, there are a few things you can do to preserve vision and reduce long-term issues in the day to day. 1. "When we're looking at a computer screen we only blink 1/3 of the rate we normally would, so as doctors, we're diagnosing and treating higher incidences of clinical dry eye in younger and younger populations," explains Dr. Mardak. She recommends utilizing the 20-20-20 Rule for Visual Hygiene. For every 20 minutes of up-close work you do, give your eyes a break and look more than 20 feet away for more than 20 seconds. This allows your eye muscles to uncross, relax your focusing system and fight fatigue. 2. Bright sunlight doesn't just cause temporary strain and discomfort. It's responsible for long-term damage including blindness as well. Wear sunglasses that offer 100% UVA/UVB protection when outdoors. 3. Like most other health issues, our diet is a direct contributor to 20/20 vision. Incorporate a variety of fruits and veggies, especially leafy green vegetables, into your 2025 diet plan. Also, be sure to avoid smoking at all costs! To get your eyesight in check as the new year unfolds, book an appointment at wildwoodeyecare.com.

Now Tre n d i n g : Giving Back VOLUNTEERS (AND DONORS) BRING RECOVERY TO THE WATER.

ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS

G IV IN G BAC K | EDUCATI ON

Now in its third year as a nonprofit, Reeling in Serenity is introducing more people in active recovery from substance use disorder (SUD) to the healing properties of fly fishing. Reeling in Serenity 501(c)(3) hosts free, all-day retreats where guests are paired with fly fishing guides, then learn the basics and experience the thrill of catchand-release fishing. Guides, instructors and meeting facilitators, as well as staff and board, are all volunteers, fueled by the tight community fly fishing fosters and a desire to support those recovering from SUD. “The stories shared at the start of every retreat, the immediate community and fierce focus that fly fishing requires provides a unique opportunity for healing,” says Sylvia Huron, co-founder and executive director for Reeling in Serenity. “The benefits are profound, giving hope and healing for our retreat guests. And honestly for all of us who volunteer as well.” Since its inception, Reeling in Serenity 501(c)(3) has hosted more than 50 guests on rivers in Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, and this year will add retreats in Colorado and Montana. All guides, program coordinators and staff volunteer their time to teach basic knots, casting and entomology after an hour of sharing and fellowship. Guests are then paired with a guide for a one-on-one fly fishing experience complete with waders, boots and gear. Reeling in Serenity’s work is funded by donations. They host an annual fundraiser each September: an online auction with fresh and saltwater fly fishing

trips, guided trips in national parks and on rivers coast to coast, custom rods, high-tech gear, fly boxes and art inspired by fly fishing, books, and much more. Among last year's auction highlights was an amazing seven-day, six-night, all-inclusive trip to Lago Frío in Chilean Patagonia for one angler hosted by Chile Trout Patagonia, a unique opportunity to join the Flylords team for a day on an upcoming episode of their Fly Shop Tour, and a beautiful acrylic on canvas entitled "Manistee River Steelhead" by renowned artist Sarah Landström. “Our annual auction fuels all we do,” says Sylvia. “Monies raised help us continue to host retreats that are open to those who have chosen the path of recovery. We also serve as a safe space and resource for the sober fly angler doing the work one day at a time.” So pull-up your waders and get ready for 2025 auction! Reeling in Serenity was founded by friends who met fly fishing and discovered they shared something in common. They were all in recovery from SUD and agreed that the friendships and focus of fly fishing were key contributors to their healing and growth. Founders Jennifer Gilbert of Canton, Rebecca Sue Klein of Smyrna, Sylvia Huron of Athens and Ian Huron of Atlanta continue their commitment to the nonprofit's mission, sharing their unique gifts to grow the organization and serve more people. And visit ReelingInSerenity.org to explore retreat dates and volunteer opportunities.

“Reeling in Serenity celebrates life free from addiction by embracing nature and the spiritual connection that fly fishing has brought so many.”

TRAGEDY TO TRIUMPH THE GIFT OF LIFE… 3 YEARS LATER

ARTICLE BY JEFF FISCHER

34

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | L I FE + CU LT U RE

“We are both feeling great…. With new milestones each day. The future is very bright.”

There is no greater love than the love of a child by a parent. There is nothing that a parent wouldn’t do for their child. A good home, a good education, and so much more. And yes, life itself when threatened. And that was the case over 3 years ago with Roswell’s Albers family. Will Albers, the son of Georgia State Senator John and Kari Albers, learned in 2020 that his kidneys were failing at an alarming rate. He was admitted to the hospital where further testing proceeded along with prayers from family and friends. Will’s condition was truly life threatening with no clear reason. The doctors and medical staffs at both Northside Cherokee and Emory Hospitals realized a kidney donor would have to be found. And that donor would ultimately be his father, John. As this magazine reported in November 2021, the transplant was successful with both John and Will healthy and fine… then and now. As John stated 3-years ago, “We are both feeling great…. With new milestones each day. The future is very bright.” And bright it is. Yes, of course, for Will is alive today and doing well but beyond that. Often, a life-changing event, which this was, impacts not only those directly affected but other lives as well. The impact of love and outpouring of support from their congregation at Roswell United Methodist to the Georgia senate to the Roswell Rotary was abundant. And while for many that would be enough, this was not the case for the senator and his family. Instead, they put their efforts into helping and supporting a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation, founded in 2018, called Second Alarm.

Second Alarm’s mission is twofold: To advocate for organ donation and to provide essential support to first responders. They strive to drive legislative changes, increase organ donor registrations, and ensure the safe and efficient transportation of organs. Offering direct assistance and resources to firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and 911 operators, recognizing the invaluable role these heroes play in our communities. This is truly a match meant to be. Senator Albers served as a volunteer firefighter/EMT for decades continuing his family legacy which spans generations of First Responders. “Second Alarm, which means ‘I need help’ was just truly a match to meant to be,” explained Senator Albers. “Their dedication to support firefighters, law enforcement, EMS, and 911 dispatcher heroes is noble and inspiring to all. It was to our family.” Will’s story, along with the support from the entire Albers family, led Second Alarm to do even more by providing resources, community support, and assistance to those navigating the challenging journey of organ donation while still serving those who protect us. Destiny? Fate? I’ll let the reader decide. What we do know is that a son is alive today due to the unconditional love by his father. The community, both near and far, has been enriched by bringing the Albers family and Second Alarm together. Tragedy to triumph. It's alive and well in Roswell. 2nd-Alarm.com

HOW THE HEALING POWERS OF ANIMALS TRANSFORM COMMUNITIES O N E PAW AT A T I M E

ARTICLE BY SYDNEY KATE LEWIS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Assisted-animal therapy, or animal therapy, is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that leverages the healing power of human-animal bonds and incorporates interactions with animals to improve physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Therapy animals differ from service animals in that service animals are paired with an individual who has a qualifying medical disability, whereas therapy animals are paired with a handler to form a credentialed team that interacts with the public at large. When Paula Pinyan retired, she realized she wanted to become a handler for a therapy dog. “There’s just something about the power of animals that is beyond me,” Paula said. She reached out to Kimberly Brenowitz, the Executive Director and Founder of Paws for Life USA, who has over twenty years of experience. Kimberly agreed to assist. Together, they visited local shelters until they finally encountered Joy. Joy had been in the shelter twice and was in desperate need of her “furever” home. She was scared, but despite her past, she had the one thing dogs need to become the best therapy animals: a natural love for people, something that is innate and impossible to teach. “All she wanted was to love and to be loved,” Paula said. the course of about a year, Paula taught Joy the meaning of safety, trust, and love, while Kimberly trained Paula to become a handler. Soon enough, Joy was fully trained and ready to begin her journey as a therapy dog with Paula by her side. Joy’s natural ability to love people is complemented by her remarkable skill in sensing what the humans she interacts with need at any given moment. For instance, when Paws for Life USA visited a local nonprofit dedicated to helping children cope with grief, there was a young girl who was bouncing off the walls, interrupting conversations, and wreaking the kind of havoc only a child can create—until it was her turn to meet Joy. The young girl sat down to pet Joy, and her entire demeanor immediately transformed, reflecting an inexplicable calm. In another instance, Paula took Joy to a local assisted living facility, where Joy interacted with various residents. For six months, Joy had been visiting one particular woman. On one visit, the woman’s family happened to be there. As they watched, the woman leaned over, petted Joy, and spoke a few words to her. The family, moved to tears, revealed they hadn’t heard their mother speak in months. These stories are just a few of the many Paula shares about the profound impact Joy and other therapy animals have on people. “That’s the power of animals. They connect with people on a level that other people cannot,” Paula said. Current research supports Paula’s observations. Interactions with therapy animals have been shown to lower cortisol levels; reduce blood pressure and heart rate; increase oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin; alleviate hypervigilance in individuals with PTSD; and encourage social interaction, communication, and physical activity in individuals with autism, dementia, or social anxiety. While animal therapy should be used in conjunction with other forms of traditional therapy, “therapy animals are difficult to compare to other forms of therapy. It goes back to the human-animal bond. It is in its own category.” Paws for Life USA visits a variety of settings, including schools, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, hospitals, and corporate offices such as Porsche and The Home Depot. They even participate in events like Dragon Con. For those who wish to get involved—whether with the intent to become a handler or to receive animal therapy— email admin@pawsforlifeusa.org for more information.

ESTABLISH SUSTAINABLE HABITS FOR A NEW YOU THIS NEW YEAR

Harnessing Healthy Habits ARTICLE BY SYDNEY KATE LEWIS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

44

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS

After ringing in the new year with copious amounts of champagne and an abundance of sweets, it’s time to set New Year’s resolutions. This year, though, avoid making promises that are unrealistic or unattainable. Instead, focus on establishing habits that are achievable and sustainable. The most common resolution of all time is getting fit in the new year—shedding holiday weight and more. Gym memberships often peak in January, but what about those who don’t enjoy the gym or find it intimidating? Exercise should not only be pursued but also enjoyed. It doesn’t have to be limited to the gym. Instead, think of exercise as an opportunity to engage in movements that bring you joy.

For instance, you can try: walking and hiking on local trails such as the Silver Comet Trail, Noonday Creek Trail, Heritage Park, or Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park; outdoor sports like pickleball or frisbee golf at local courts; or dance classes in styles such as salsa, ballroom, swing, or line dancing. The possibilities for incorporating movement into your life are endless—it's all about thinking outside the box. However, exercise alone isn’t always the solution. Adopting a healthy, balanced diet can work wonders, too. This doesn’t mean going gluten-free, keto, or trying diets like Whole30. Instead, make simple, sustainable changes, such as meal prepping on your day off to avoid CONTINUED >

unhealthy, last-minute food choices. Not sure where to start? Search for healthy cooking classes, such as those occasionally offered at local farmers' markets, or look for recipes on Pinterest or the Whole Foods website. If you’re active on social media, consider following healthy food influencers who share recipes and tips. Don’t forget to stay hydrated. Invest in a water bottle and aim to finish it by the end of the day. If plain water isn’t appealing, add natural flavors like lemon, cucumber, or mint. A consistent sleep schedule also plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Use the “Do Not Disturb” and wake-up settings on your phone to help ensure you go to bed and wake up at the same time every day—even on weekends. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule can enhance sleep quality, regulate your internal clock, boost energy levels, and strengthen mental clarity. Physical health is only one part of the equation. Mental health is just as crucial to a balanced lifestyle. Incorporating mindfulness habits into your daily routine can help reduce anxiety and improve overall well-being. Apps such as Headspace or Calm teach deep-breathing exercises, while curated playlists filled with uplifting songs can alleviate the heaviness life sometimes brings. Establishing a nightly journaling habit, where you list things you’re grateful for, can shift your mindset to focus more on the positives of each day.

Community also plays an important role in mental health. While some people have smaller social batteries than others, humans are inherently social beings who benefit from connection. Joining groups that align with your hobbies is an easy and excellent way to build community. For instance, if you love to read, consider local book clubs such as those offered by FoxTale Book Shoppe, The Book Worm Bookstore, or Cobb County Libraries. Creativity has long been proven to serve as a form of therapy. Whether it’s pottery, dance, music, theater, or another artistic pursuit, engaging in the creative arts provides an outlet for self-expression and pride. Local establishments like The Art Station, Mable House Arts Center, The Art Place, and Sewell Mill Cultural Center offer classes where you can learn and participate in these creative endeavors. When setting goals for a healthy lifestyle, remember to be realistic. For example, if you’re a reader, use apps like Goodreads to track your progress. If you’re focusing on your diet, try apps like MyFitnessPal to monitor calories and nutritional intake. Don’t beat yourself up if you fall short of your goals; making an effort is a success in itself. Some of these steps might feel outside your comfort zone, but they can encourage and enable you to become the version of yourself you aspire to be in the new year. Happy New Year!

Nutrient-Rich Dessert To The Rescue ARTICLE BY MEL BOBAN

SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious. Combine: • 1 cup wheat flour • 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled • 2 cups oats • 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts

1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 tablespoons chia seeds 2/3 cup raisins Optional: chocolate chips as desired Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.

Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa. Add this mixture slowly to combine: • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter • 1/2 cup honey • 1 banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.
