SAVORING the SEASON

Finding Family, Giving Back and Celebrating the Season
As the year draws to a close, I always find myself reflecting on what truly matters — connection, generosity, and the quiet beauty of giving back. December invites us to pause, gather close, and celebrate not just where we come from, but who we choose to share our hearts with.
The holidays remind us that family is not defined by blood, but by love. This month’s cover story shines a light on the extraordinary ways families are formed — and the powerful role one small Mariettabased nonprofit plays in creating new beginnings.

Throughout this issue, we also celebrate the spirit of joy, togetherness, and service above self. From festive outings and cozy wine country escapes to thoughtful gifts for everyone on your list, the season is filled with opportunity to come together, unwind and experience something new. May these stories inspire you to savor the season, lift others, and find meaning in moments both simple and grand.
Here’s to giving, gathering, and finding gratitude in every corner of December.
Sincerely,
KEVIN KASETA, PUBLISHER @EASTCOBBCITYLIFESTYLE

St. Nick's Kids
ARTICLE BY TRAN BUI

St. Nick’s Kids reminds us that the greatest gifts aren’t found beneath the tree.
“After 23 years of a blessed yet childless marriage and several years of contemplating adoption, we were introduced to a wonderful birth mother who, due to challenging circumstances, made the tough decision to offer her baby for adoption.” — Domestic adoptive parent.
Adoption is more than a legal process — it’s a leap of love, a promise of belonging, and the ultimate act of faith. That belief inspired Irene Steffas to launch St. Nick’s Kids, Inc. in 2019.
With more than 40 years of experience helping families grow through adoption, Steffas envisioned a place where expertise and empathy meet — where the often complicated journey to parenthood could be filled with warmth, guidance, and grace. “Irene wanted to walk alongside families through every step of the adoption journey,” shares Executive Director Jyotika Acharya. “Today, that vision has grown into a team of well-rounded social workers and staff who provide support for children and families of every background, belief, and identity.”
Nestled in Marietta, St. Nick’s Kids offers a full range of services for both domestic and international placements — from home studies with education and training to birth parent assessments, child background studies, ICPC processing, and post-placement supervision. “Our dedicated team supports expectant parents, adoptive families, and children with respect, transparency, and integrity throughout every step of the adoption process,” Acharya emphasizes.
The agency’s mission is simple yet profound: to build loving families through compassionate, ethical, and professional adoption services.
Adoption is rewarding, but not without its challenges. Families may face grief, attachment struggles, long wait times, financial pressures, and complex legal steps. “Open adoption dynamics, cultural or identity questions, and social stigma can add further stress,” notes Acharya. “But preparation, counseling, and staying connected with adoption professionals can make all the difference.”
One adoptive couple shared their heartfelt gratitude: “St. Nick’s assigned an awesome social worker named Melisa White to guide our process. She was the consummate professional. She left no stone unturned, while keeping us on track to complete the adoption. It was a lot of work, and yet Melisa was most gracious and a calming presence through the entire process.”
For anyone considering adoption, Acharya offers encouragement: “Feeling unsure is normal, and reaching out to St. Nick’s Kids is a supportive first step toward guidance, resources, and community on this meaningful path.”
As one grateful family shared, “Through it all, St. Nick’s Kids have become like family — and they were the perfect adoption agency to help us grow ours.”
This holiday season, when love and gratitude fill the air, St. Nick’s Kids reminds us that the greatest gifts aren’t found beneath the tree — they’re found in the hearts of those who open their homes and embrace the miracle of family.

HOLIDAY EYE HEALTH
Temperatures are dropping, cold winds are blowing, and you’re dressing in coats to keep your body protected from the cold. But you may be unintentionally neglecting a critical part of your body in the winter—your eyes.
Freezing air sucks moisture from everything, including your skin and eyes. When you escape the cold and head indoors, the blast of heat that usually greets you this time of year can dry your eyes out even more.
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR EYES:
Limit time in front of direct heat.
Heat causes the tear film on your eyes to evaporate, leaving the surface of your eye vulnerable to drying out.
Wear protective eyewear outside.
Dry eyes will become even worse when exposed to icy winds. Consider wrap-around sunglasses to protect against windy winter days.
Keep eye drops handy.
Eye drops and artificial tears are reliable remedies for dry eyes. Keep a bottle with you throughout the day to take care of any sudden episodes of irritation.
Consume omega-3 oils.
Flax seeds, chia seeds, walnuts, and salmon are all great sources of omega-3 oils, which can improve function in the eye’s Meibomian glands.

HOLIDAY POP UP!
The world famous pop-up bar brings a winter wonderland of cocktails, color, and cheer.

There’s a Miracle waiting just beyond East CobbMarietta. Open through December 31, this festive holiday pop-up in downtown Alpharetta brings all the tinsel, twinkle, and cheer you could ask for.
Part of the world-famous Miracle Pop-Up Bar series, this over-the-top experience transforms an ordinary space into a winter wonderland filled with nostalgic holiday tunes, sparkling décor, and cocktails that taste like Christmas in a glass. “Every inch is decked, every drink has a clever name, and every night feels like a celebration,” says Brenden Mikulak.
General Manager Brian Lee adds, “Expect festive flair, whimsical touches, and enough twinkle to make even the Grinch grin.”
Signature sips like the Christmapolitan, Rudolph’s Replacement, Blitzed Barrel, and Snowball Old-Fashioned pair perfectly with endless photo ops.
Your $10 entry includes a Santa hat and light-up necklace, because Miracle believes in decking you out too. Follow @miracle.on. main.st for themed nights, Santa sightings, and sneak peeks.

SAVORING THE SEASON A Fall Harvest to Remember!

The holiday season brings with it a wonderful urge to celebrate — to open a favorite bottle, pour a glass, and share moments that sparkle. It’s the perfect time to showcase spectacular still and sparkling boutique wines at home with friends and family as you gather and toast the season.
Join us on a journey through Northern California’s wine country, experiencing unforgettable tastings and savoring the best flavors the harvest has to offer. Spending time with winery owners and winemakers deepened our appreciation for the passion, precision, and teamwork behind every bottle. During harvest, the hills and valleys come alive with the scent of ripened grapes and the tireless energy of those who work from dawn to dusk to craft these remarkable wines.
A JOURNEY THROUGH NORTHERN CALIFORNIA'S WINE COUNTRY
ARTICLE BY REI KAISER
Ram's Gate Winery
First stop is Ram’s Gate Winery. Perched atop a sun-kissed hill where the San Francisco Bay meets the edges of Napa and Sonoma, this stunning estate is the perfect introduction to California wine country. Spread across 28 acres, Ram’s Gate invites you to sip and savor in breathtaking surroundings—whether from a sun-drenched patio, the elegantly appointed indoor tasting rooms, or a peaceful stroll along the ponds winding through the vineyards. Every moment here feels like a celebration, and the first tasting sets the bar high for the unforgettable journey ahead.
Trione Vineyards & Winery
Next, we had the pleasure of sitting down with owner Mark Trione to hear the inspiring story of his family’s legacy while tasting exquisite wines sourced from each of their five estate ranches. Every sip is a true taste of place, a journey across Sonoma County captured in a glass. Three generations, decades of dedicated farming, and a commitment to the top estates for their Trione Wine brand make this a must-experience destination. Adding to the charm, the historic 100-year-old stone building has been beautifully preserved and transformed into an elegant event space right on the property—where history and hospitality meet perfectly

Gloria Ferrer
Nestled on top of the valley lies the Gloria Ferrer estate - as you sit and relax on the outdoor patios you view their vineyards, and pollinating gardens - filled with butterflies and hummingbirds. This vineyard, rich in history, began with a dream passed from father to son.
José Ferrer grew up surrounded by his family’s winemaking tradition in Spain. His heart was set on bringing the art of traditional method sparkling wine to the New World. He didn't make the journey alone, he met Gloria, who shared his love of wine and his sense of adventure. Together they crossed oceans and planted roots in Carneros, where the cool breezes and rolling hills reminded them of home. What began as a shared dream became a pioneering legacy, first sparkling wine estate in the region, this lives on in every bottle of Gloria Ferrer sparkling wine.
An amazing afternoon, with a six course culinary experience - dishes curated from their own garden and each course complimented with its own signature sparkling pairing. We also spent time with a young winemaker, Kyle Altomare, who shared with us his passion of blending flavors and putting his skills to work to create and produce 21 different varieties of bubbles while also producing 4 still wines. A beautiful afternoon to say the least.
Sangiacomo Wines
Maria and Vittorio Sangiacomo immigrated from Italy, met and married in San Francisco, and settled in on a ranch in 1927. They planted apples, pears, peaches, prunes and cherries. Focusing on the pears, the family business became one of the largest pear growing operations in California in 1959. But as the pear market softened, they pivoted and planted their first vineyard in 1969. The first vintage of Sangiacomo Family Wines was born in 2018. As one of the oldest properties and a 3rd generation vineyard we enjoyed listening to the history, touring the vineyard and tasting the rich and full bodied wines on a beautiful afternoon. We took our favorite bottle of Pinot Noir to the famous downtown steakhouse Cole's Chophouse, Napa to savor with dinner.

Bricoluer Vineyards
We toured the gorgeous estate of Bricoluer Vineyards. The winery launched their first vintage in 2017 and opened its tasting room in 2020. Tucked away in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, they have been featured on The TODAY Show and honored by USA Today as one of the 10 Best New Wineries in the country. Executive Chef Todd Knoll and his culinary team create seasonal five-course pairings featuring locally sourced ingredients, including produce from their estate gardens. The chefs and winemakers collaborate to create "Perfect Pairings" that express the seasonality of the estate’s sustainably farmed culinary garden. We were treated to a delightful lunch experience that embodied the fresh garden flavors along with perfectly paired wines that were savored long afterward.

Aperture
Our last stop of the day was Aperture Winery. Andy Katz made his name as one of the greatest photographers of his generation, and his work graces coffee-table books, galleries, and album covers around the globe. While he was traveling the world for his art, he made a point of bringing along his son, Jesse, to experience it all with him. Over the years, they both benefited from an international wine education that even master sommeliers
Wine pairing at Bricoleur Winery
Eleven Eleven's tasting room
Aperture's Modernistic Tasting room
would envy. Now Jesse Katz has, in a remarkably short period of time, made himself into one of the most respected wine professionals in California. He was the first winemaker ever to be included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, a Wine Enthusiast 40 Under 40 Tastemaker, and had been named a Wine Spectator “Rising Star.”
Eleven Eleven
A series of serendipitous events led to the founding of Eleven Eleven. Ellie Anest & Carol Vassilliadis started out as life long friends and Southern California transplants who fell in love with the Napa Valley. Expanding their relationship to focus on real estate investment properties - their first acquisition was a home surrounded by a 3.5 acre vineyard in the heart of the Oak Knoll AVA. The whisper of this magical vineyard called them to take a chance at producing their own wine. The search for an experienced winemaker led them to one of Napa’s finest - Kirk Venge. And so it began…Eleven Eleven Wines is the closest winery to the city limits of Napa. We visited with Ellie who shared her story and learnings about a wine maker's journey and to creating one of the most beautiful wine tasting rooms and patios we visited. We sampled their boutique wines and found our favorite Shiraz to bring back home.
Each stop along the way offered not just extraordinary wines, but unforgettable stories of heritage, artistry, and passion poured into every glass. From the golden hills of Sonoma to the sun-drenched valleys of Napa, every vineyard left us inspired by the people who turn nature’s bounty into something truly extraordinary. As we returned home with bottles in hand and hearts full, we carried with us the spirit of the season—one of celebration, connection, and savoring life’s most beautiful moments.

Service Above Self
The Heart of the Rotary Club of East Cobb
For the Rotary Club of East Cobb, “Service Above Self” is more than just a motto, it’s the heartbeat of an organization dedicated to making a difference. Throughout the year, the club engages in a wide range of initiatives, from supporting local schools and nonprofits to contributing to global efforts like eradicating polio and raising funds for Alzheimer’s research. Their work is a testament to the power of collective action and the belief that even a small group of dedicated individuals can create meaningful change right here in their own backyard of East Cobb.
Founded on the principles of fellowship, leadership, and service, the Rotary Club of East Cobb has long been a cornerstone of community support. With 56 active members that spans local business owners and professionals to community leaders and public servants, the club has consistently worked to address pressing needs in East Cobb. The Day of Service was a natural extension of this mission, bringing together Rotarians, local partners, and volunteers for a morning of impactful projects.
ARTICLE BY WHITNEY HIGDON
Their commitment to service was on full display during their inaugural Day of Service on Saturday, October 25 with Rotarians rolling up their sleeves and diving into a variety of service initiatives across the community. At the East Cobb Park, members partnered with the East Cobb Home Depot to revitalize flower gardens. Creativity was in full swing as members painted signs for Kidz2Leaders, a nonprofit dedicated to breaking the cycle of generational incarceration by empowering children of incarcerated parents.
Over at the Center for Children & Young Adults, Rotarians got their hands dirty planting edible gardens, a sustainable initiative aimed at supporting food production. Across town, the club packed over 200 lunches for The Table on Delk, a ministry that serves women and children who are currently or at risk of being sexually exploited out of motels on the Delk Road corridor.

One of the day’s highlights was a mobile blood drive hosted by local business owner and Rotary member Butch Carter at his business Honest-1 Auto Care. This initiative offered community members a vital opportunity to give back in a life-saving way, further amplifying the impact of the Day of Service.
After a morning of hard work and heartfelt contributions, the group came together for a celebratory lunch to reflect on their collective efforts. President Liz Myers stated how the day was a powerful reminder of the club’s mission. “Seeing our members out in the community—beautifying parks, supporting local nonprofits, and lending a hand wherever it was needed— was a wonderful success,” Myers shared. “It’s a perfect reminder of what Service Above Self really means.”

For its members, service isn’t just something they do, it’s who they are. Through their dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to “Service Above Self,” they remind us all of the profound impact that can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose. Whether it’s planting gardens, packing lunches, or hosting blood drives, the Rotary Club of East Cobb is a shining example of what it means to serve with heart and purpose.
As the club looks ahead, plans are already underway to make the Day of Service an annual tradition. With each project, no matter how big or small, the Rotary Club of East Cobb continues to strengthen its legacy as a force for good in the East Cobb community. Their efforts not only address immediate needs but also inspire others to join in the spirit of giving, creating a ripple effect of kindness and generosity for years to come. https://eastcobbrotary.com
