LIFESTYLE LETTER

Welcome 2023!

January 2023 PUBLISHER

Lisa Thibault | l.thibault@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Denise K. James | denise.james@citylifestyle.com

It’s a new year, which signifies new beginnings and a new start. With how busy life has become, it’s a nice to sit still for a minute and reflect on where we’ve been, what we’ve learned and how we want to grow personally, professionally and spiritually. The practice of establishing new goals or resolutions for the coming year is something to help keep us focused and prioritize on what is most important (or should be). Most often, goals are centered around healthier habits, spending time with the people we cherish, reaching new business objectives or just being more intentional in the moment. Goals can also be more community-focused in finding ways we can help our neighbors and those in need. We also think about our communities and how we can better engage to help our cities where we live, work, play and grow. Whatever your goals are this year, the first step is simply writing them down. The next step and possibly the hardest is acting on them. In our January issue, you will find a focus on heath and wellness for the new year, from nutrition and physical fitness to getting outdoors, being mindful and taking care of yourself. To inspire us, we’ll also read about how others have overcome obstacles that seem insurmountable. Our hope is 2023 is one filled with hope, love, laughter and good health. Here is to wonderful New Year! With gratitude,

Embrace Your Wellness Potential DR. STEPHANIE SMITH AT AIM CHIROPRACTIC & FITNESS TELLS US HOW

12

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S

Dr. Stephanie Smith started out as so many of us do — with a passion for physical fitness. A longtime soccer player who made it into Division I at Penn State, she realized that while exercise and fitness are important, taking care of her entire self meant much more than that. “I dug deeper into longevity and optimizing my body,” she says. “I realized I wanted to make myself resilient.” This heartfelt desire transitioned into Dr. Smith’s current profession, in which

she helps others optimize their own health and resilience as well. For 11 years and counting, she has been a Doctor of Chiropractic, taking special care in the complete functionality of the human body. In other words, the practice is not only about bones. “Our coaching [at AIM] is multidimensional,” she explains. “Instead of just looking at the bones, we look at neurology and muscle and the coordination of all three.

We use multiple avenues to synergistically treat the body as a whole.” The mission of AIM Chiropractic & Fitness is, quite literally, the process of digging deeper, beyond typical wellness benchmarks such as age, weight, speed or strength. Dr. Smith points out how each person’s body is unique, with unique standards and potential for wellness. “Essentially, you have to make things efficient for that person’s body,” she says. “So if a patient comes in, and she’s a middle-aged woman with kids ages 10 and older, I am looking at what her body went through and what she has been doing since.” The process at AIM of “breaking down and building back up” involves individual patients breaking down the causes behind physical challenges — scar tissue, for example – and building the body back up for optimized performance. Patients learn the complexities and possibilities behind their own bodies by understanding the neurology, muscle integrity and how everything works together. Most of all, Dr. Smith, along with her business partner, Dr. Robin Young, values being able to show patients in a hands-on and personal way how their own bodies can do things they never dreamed of. “We can help patients unlock their own potential,” she beams. “And we don’t simply tell people — we show people how their bodies can work. It’s far more empowering when you figure it out and experience it yourself.”

Tips for Healthy Lifestyle in 2023: Mindset Matters Dr. Robin Young and Dr. Stephanie Smith have tips to share with East Cobb Lifestyle readers. “These tips are a little untraditional compared to what one would typically provide when it comes to health and wellness,” says Dr. Smith. “We wanted to empower readers by equipping them with a productive mindset when it comes to health, wellness and fitness – which is our approach at AIM.”

TIP 1: Give yourself grace! A healthier you is a journey, not a destination. It takes at least three months to start to see any results in your efforts. So, expecting results “tomorrow” will only set you up for failure. Grace is where consistency and results begin to flourish.

TIP 2: Celebrate often. Small changes occur more often, so stay consistent and celebrate all the little wins. It isn’t about the BIG end result — health is a journey and not a destination.

TIP 3: Remember, simple is best! The path of least resistance will carry you far on your journey. Participate and engage in the possible. Your impossible is the destination because what’s possible today will unlock more possibilities tomorrow.

Beat the Blues and Get Outside WINTER HIKES ARE A “COOL” EXPERIENCE

ARTICLE BY DENISE K. JAMES

Don’t let the chilly weather at this time of year scare you away from the beautiful scenery of the Blue Ridge. Not only is winter a great time to get outside for a walk, these iconic mountains are famous for their beautiful blue hue and stretch from Virginia and the Carolinas all the way into Georgia, where they are quite literally right outside our door. If you fancy a winter day outdoors, they will not let you down, whether you are a seasoned hiker or a beginner. According to the American Hiking Society, 10 things should be with you on each and every hike. Those 10 things are: 1. A map or a compass-Because phones can lose service out in the woods, the AHS recommends bringing along a map or a compass.

16

S ELF CA R E | SPORTS + R E CRE ATI ON

2. Water and a way to purify it.-AHS suggests bringing a purification method in addition to water. You can buy a purifying kit on Amazon for about $15. 3. Plenty of food. 4. First aid kit 5. Knife or similar tool 6. Sunscreen 7. Some sort of shelter – such as a waterproof blanket or tent. 8. Rain gear 9. Whistle and fire materials 10. The right footwear For clues about the right footwear, we turned to Steve DeMoss and the team at Big Peach Running for advice, and they agreed the shoes you wear on a hike are important.

“The right gear can provide comfort, inspire confidence and provide cold-weather protection while outdoors,” says DeMoss. “If you're uncomfortable in your gear, whether it's footwear, socks or apparel, it becomes an unpleasant distraction. And having lightweight gear that provides warmth and protection against the elements, whether in the form of base layers, outer layers, hats or gloves, can make the difference between enjoying a chilly day or simply wishing it ends as quickly as possible!” DeMoss suggests trail shoes for the local winter hiker, which, he says, offer just as much stability and traction but are more nimble and lightweight. But whatever shoe you choose, the Big Peach team is happy to help. “We are highly selective with the shoes we carry, and they are all great shoes,” he notes. “Our job is to help our guests find not just a good shoe — that's easy — but the right shoe

for their activity and their individual needs. And we have much more than just shoes — we have apparel and other gear for all types of adventures.” Unsure where to go for your hike? The Fannin County Chamber in Blue Ridge, Georgia has a few suggestions: • Horseshoe Bend Park - Enjoy "scenic riverside benches" along the Toccoa River. • Lake Blue Ridge Day Use Area - Paved loops around a lake, ideal for a winter walk.

Mineral Springs Walking Trail - This peaceful walk on flat terrain includes signage about flora and amenities for relaxing and enjoying lunch.

WINTER BOUNTY What is the secret to indulging in the new year without guilt? We can tell you — it's a delicious, celebratory bloody mary with nutritious vegetables! Bloody marys can be packed with produce, winter produce included. Perhaps you've never thought of adding beets, Brussels sprouts or kale to this popular beverage, but now is a great time to start.

Give your cocktail (or mocktail) a nutritious twist ARTICLE BY DENISE K. JAMES

22

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

BEETS March to the "beet" of a new drum in 2023 and try beets in your bloody mary. You can do this in a few different ways — puree fresh beets in a food processor and add them, or simply use them as a garnish. Known as a superfood, beets are low in calories and high in antioxidants, making them the perfect, healthy bloody mary add-in.

KALE Kale makes another healthy add-in for your bloody mary. Baby kale can be pureed in the food processor more easily and has a milder flavor. Add a few sprigs to your drink ensemble to make it colorful and Instagram-worthy! Containing vitamins A, K, B6 and C plus calcium, potassium, copper and manganese, kale is another superfood, low in calories and big on nutrients.

NOT A BLOODY MARY FAN BUT STILL WANT A COCKTAIL WITH FRESH INGREDIENTS? Visit Mac McGee, with two locations in Roswell and the Battery Atlanta. This unique Irish pub grinds, pickles, bakes and cases everything in-house. The scratch kitchen uses local, organic and artisanal products, and the pub offers a wide range of craft beers, craft cocktails and whiskeys to wet your whistle. Cheers!

BRUSSELS SPROUTS Love Brussels? Us too! Roast them to bring out their smooth, rich flavor and use them as your garnish. Brussels sprouts, like other cruciferous vegetables, can help protect against many different types of cancers, including the stomach, lungs, kidney, breast, bladder and prostate.

DRY JANUARY? Abstaining in the new year? We suggest combining these vegetables with tomato juice and your favorite spices for a healthy mocktail worthy of celebration.

“PERHAPS YOU’VE NEVER THOUGHT OF ADDING BEETS, BRUSSELS SPROUTS OR KALE TO YOUR BLOODY MARY, BUT NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO START.”

How Scott Rigsby turned his personal tragedy to inspiring triumph ARTICLE BY MARIA SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

26

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | WELLNE S S

Scott Rigsby turned tragedy into triumph. Despite losing his legs, he became a world-class athlete, author, speaker and philanthropist. Rigsby was the first double amputee on prosthetics to complete the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon, which includes swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles and running 26.2 miles in one day. He also finished the Boston Marathon six times. His story is inspirational and aspirational, and his zest for life is contagious. In 1986, Rigsby had a catastrophic truck accident that eventually claimed his lower legs and left him with a traumatic brain injury. He suffered from depression and addiction but overcame these obstacles to become a record-breaking endurance athlete. He learned to define his life by what he has — not what he doesn’t have. “My body doesn’t define me,” Rigsby told East Cobb Lifestyle recently. "Nor do my legs. Whether made of shiny metal or smooth skin, they're a gift to share, not a burden to bear." Though he is known for his upbeat attitude, Rigsby admits that he’s not always positive. He says that there are periods when he struggles with fear, doubt and uncertainty — and when he yells, screams and sometimes throws fits because things aren't going his way. When these times come up, he says, “I remind myself that it’s not my full story, and that God is a kind, wise, benevolent and all-knowing heavenly father with a wonderful plan for my life.” In this way, he can remember his greater purpose and use his faith to carry on. This strong faith has allowed Rigsby to remain grateful and willing to give back to others.

Interestingly, Rigsby grew up with a special needs brother who taught him to have compassion for those with physical or mental challenges. He believes his brother Tim defied the odds to live a fulfilling life, making him the real “Ironman” of the family. Tim’s own example of resilience inspired Rigsby to push beyond his limits following his accident and to have empathy for veterans and others dealing with hardships. He understands the value of love and encouragement from those around him. The local community has supported Rigsby, humbling him with their serving hearts. “They gave me a safe refuge to build a life devoted to serving others,” he insists. “For the community’s investment, I'm eternally thankful. So much of my athletic success and desire to be a better person can be attributed to these special neighbors.” In this new year, Scott Rigsby is incredibly grateful to be surrounded by friends and family. Though his parents have passed away, he is thankful for the family they created and the gift of love that continues to grow. “My parents were married for 66 years and had seven children, 14 grandkids and 20 great-grandchildren. I am so thankful for the upbringing from my parents and the special times we shared. I miss them dearly, but I am so grateful to have people that I love to share a meal and special memories.” To learn more about this uplifting story, check out ScottRigsby.com, or read his well-reviewed book, Unthinkable, available on Amazon.

THE TRUTH ABOUT DRY SKIN

I’M STILL USING MY REGULAR LOTION. WHY IS MY SKIN DRY IN THE WINTER? During the winter, due to cold air, dry indoor heat and low humidity levels, our skin tends to be dryer, so you need to add products that add moisture and natural oils back into the skin.

(and what to do about it)

WHAT ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO DRY SKIN? Skin feeling as dry as a British sitcom this season? Learn the reasons why (and what you can do to get the dewiness back) from Meirielly Teixeira, owner of the Brazilian Beauty Spa. An expert on healthy skin thanks to her education, experience and in-depth research on the nutrition, environment, products and the factors that help our largest organ thrive, Teixeira is here to help us get the glow back while the mercury is still low – and collect the compliments!

Besides the factors mentioned above, pollution, chemicals and lifestyle can all equal dry skin. Pollution and chemicals are free radicals and are detrimental to the skin. Poor eating habits, lack of physical activity and poor hygiene will also contribute to dry skin.

WHAT NUTRITIONAL FACTORS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO DRY SKIN? DOES WHAT WE EAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE? First of all, skin needs water. Skin is made of 70% water, so making sure that you are consuming enough water is extremely

important for the hydration of your skin. Second, make sure you stay away from inflammatory foods such as processed foods, gluten, lactose, sugar, alcohol, et cetera. Our intestines are our second brain, so keeping its flora healthy can prevent various skin disorders, including dry skin!

WHAT AT-HOME CHANGES CAN I MAKE TO ENHANCE MY SKIN’S HEALTH? A good skincare routine with waterbased products such as hyaluronic acid will help hydrate and keep your skin smooth and radiant. Always hydrate your skin immediately after washing, and, for the body, seek products that have oils such as coconut and jojoba.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I IDEALLY SEE A PROFESSIONAL? For any type of skin, I recommend at least once monthly treatments.

CAN YOU SPEAK TO WHICH PRODUCTS TO TRY AND WHICH TO AVOID? Try products that will add moisture and oil to your skin, and avoid the constant use of glycolic acid.

WHAT ARE SOME TREATMENTS I SHOULD IMPLEMENT FOR DRY SKIN? Most of our facials will nourish and hydrate the skin. Hydration, vitamin C — which is a powerful antioxidant — and hyaluronic acid treatments will all apply water back to the skin, as well as moisturize and nourish the skin. However, a consultation is necessary in order to provide the best protocol.

FINANCIAL HEALTH CHECK

WHY NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME TO REEVALUATE PROTECTING WHAT MATTERS

Take it from Kory Rykman, owner at the Allstate Insurance Ryman Agencies — there is never a wrong time to take a closer look at your insurance policies. In fact, right now is perhaps more crucial than ever, since the value of many regular assets, including your home and vehicle, have increased a great deal — and, unfortunately, you could be out of luck if disaster strikes. Rykman, who is a real estate investor himself, explains that while most home insurance policies protect against the regular pace of inflation and it’s generally assumed a home’s value will increase, the incredibly drastic changes of the last couple of years can leave homeowners blindsided — and with far less accumulated wealth than they expected. “People love the idea of how much wealth they’ve accumulated for themselves based on recent appreciation,” he notes. “The number-one nest egg people have is their home.” The issue would arise, he explains, if a disaster such as a tornado or house fire

destroys the home, and the maximum payout is hundreds of thousands less than the owner anticipates. “It’s a gut punch,” he says. “And I can’t tell you how many prospects did not have proper coverage in the last couple of months.” Another asset which has likely increased in value is your vehicle – and auto insurance companies are suffering, according to Rykman, because of the recent uptick in automobile accidents. “2022 was a catastrophic year for car insurance companies because of the jumps in value,” he says. “You can Google those numbers on what companies have lost.” According to Rykman, teen drivers and elderly drivers, in particular, are at risk for accidents. Allstate customers, however, have Accident Forgiveness, meaning the rates don’t automatically climb after a fender bender. And that’s great news, considering a whopping 90% of first-year drivers are involved in some sort of incident. Squeamish about diving in and reviewing your policies? Rykman gets it — he acknowledges that insurance can be a “nuisance,” and that many people “set it and forget it” – so he wants to make it simpler for readers to make changes. “It’s not something to put off — you never know when you’ll need to call your insurance company,” he emphasizes. “Texting is popular among our clients. You can just text us at 770-974-5303 and say you read this article and need your insurance reviewed. We’ll simply text you back, ask for your address and prepare a quote. We make it painless.”
