Just a few years ago, Doni and Bob Whitley lived an exciting and active lifestyle, traveling all over the world with Bob’s job. But after 30 happy years in their home located in Cumming, Georgia, the Whitleys realized they needed to make a change — they wanted to be closer to their two sons in East Cobb. After plenty of dedicated research, the couple chose Sterling Estates of East Cobb, a community that would support them with Bob’s recent Parkinson’s diagnosis — not to mention, offer a number of amenities and other resources to enrich their lives. Open since September 2012, Sterling Estates is locally owned and managed by a group of partners “who have been in the senior living industry since 1988,” according to Mike Brown, partner. The philosophy at Sterling Estates is simple, yet nuanced pertaining to each resident: “We build and operate our communities to what we or our parents would personally want,” Brown explains. The grounds at Sterling Estates are picturesque and spacious,

with a neighborhood-like feel consisting of sidewalks, greenspaces, patios and courtyards. The East Cobb location (another is located in West Cobb) sits on more than 10 acres with 14 independent cottages, six more under construction and 90 apartments featuring various levels of assistance. Because life at Sterling Estates is about staying active, amenities include a 5,000-square-foot wellness center with an indoor heated saltwater pool; exercise facilities, including personalized classes; and a calendar full of fun activities for residents to take advantage of. Take it from Lillian Mortimer, a happy resident who is 106 years young: In addition to swimming twice a week, exercising regularly, savoring the community’s beauty with long walks and frequently dining with a table of ladies, she has discovered she’s an artist. Now, she takes art classes twice a week. “I know it’s a great place to work at because it’s a great place to live. I’m very happy here,” she beams. “I’m very thankful.” CONTINUED >

The Whitleys are swift to echo Lillian’s sentiments. “With Bob’s Parkinson’s diagnosis, the Wellness Center offered not only balance training, but a fitness program specifically designed to improve mobility, strength and stability,” Doni shares. She adds that living at Sterling Estates has allowed her to focus on her husband’s health as well as her own health, without the burden of daily tasks like cooking and cleaning. Both Doni and Bob are active in the community and are glad they chose Sterling Estates. “The love and support we feel daily ensures we made the right decision,” Doni says. Hygge: "A cozy quality that makes a person feel content and comfortable." - Merriam Webster Hygge originates in Scandinavia and involves embracing winter through cozy atmospheres anyone can recreate. There is no standard to follow, but adopting little comforts that tend to each of the five senses is a great place to start. Sight: As Jennifer Rakestraw of Century Park Interiors puts it, "There is something incredibly special about lighting. It makes the holiday season romantic and loving." Whether it's the glow of holiday lights strung or candle flames flickering above the mantle, mood lighting can make winter's long, dark evenings easier on the eye. Sound: Good news if you started playing festive tunes in October! This is where they come in. If you're not quite ready to embrace the spirit of the season, pull up

a classical playlist or pull out your record player for an elegant, retro mood. Taste: There's just no topping freshly baked goodies as the weather gets chilly. Keep a jar of warm chocolate chip cookies at the ready and transform your morning coffee station into a hot chocolate bar with mini marshmallows, cinnamon sticks and whipped cream. Smell: While candles and incense will do the job here, fall simmer pots offer a little more creative freedom. Start with a pot of simmering water and add your favorite seasonal scents like cinnamon, nutmeg, oranges and apples for an all-day aroma. Touch: On the coldest days of the year, all we need is a living space that emulates warmth. Jeff Foxworthy’s Heart for Others No other comic is more identifiable with Atlanta than Jeff Foxworthy. A respected mainstay in the comedy world, Jeff launched his career by winning the Great Southeastern Laugh-off at Atlanta’s Punchline Comedy Club in 1984. Since then, he has authored more than 26 books, hosted several successful game shows, and led the hugely successful Blue Collar Comedy tour. Jeff’s brand of humor has made our lives brighter, and while he’s recognized across the country for his laughs, less realize he also has a big heart for service. This month, Jeff will serve as emcee for the CURE Childhood Cancer 10th annual Believe Ball. Jeff and his wife Gregg are longtime supporters of CURE. “We have been blessed in our life, not only financially, but blessed with our children’s and grandchildren’s health,” says Jeff. “We are called to love our neighbor, and Gregg and I take that seriously.” Beyond CURE, Jeff and his wife support the Atlanta Mission, Plywood People, No Longer Bound, Hope Heals and the Westside rebuilding efforts. “Supporting CURE -- their amazing contribution to research, and the care for the families during their cancer journey -- makes a difference. Most people don’t realize how little funding childhood cancer research receives. Gregg and I have been supporters and advocates since the early ‘90s when we worked with Duke Children’s Hospital and Camp Sunshine. We have met some great people along the way who are having an impact and making a difference. Today Jeff and his wife Gregg have moved to a farm in Georgia to create more memories for their family. “The farm is beautiful. It’s my place to unplug from the world, and the only thing that makes me happier than

The 2023 event marks a decade of generosity and will exceed the incredible milestone of raising more than $10 million since its inception. A highlight of the Believe Ball will be CURE’s presentation of the Ragab Spirit of Hope Award to Lendmark Financial Services and its CEO Bobby Aiken. Named for Dr. Abdel Ragab - Emory University’s first pediatric oncologist and CURE’s founder – the award is presented to individuals who exemplify the dedication, compassion and commitment to children with cancer that Dr. Ragab embodied. “Bobby Aiken is the epitome of a servant leader,” says Kristin Connor, CEO of CURE. “He is so inspiring that the entire company has embraced his vision and made it their own.” The Lendmark annual Climb to CURE campaign has grown from a one-day event to the company’s cornerstone philanthropic initiative. Through the Climb to CURE, Bobby and the Lendmark associates have raised more than $6.73 million through employee, partner and community fundraising efforts – including a $2 million donation raised in 2023 alone.

Jenn shares that CURE was there with support and compassion from day one. “From meals to information to support, CURE showed up for our family and we are forever grateful,” says Jenn. ”By providing meals in the hospital, CURE helped ease the stress of our situation. By giving so much support to childhood cancer research, CURE provided a path to healing. They are saving lives. We are so grateful to CURE in their work for families fighting this awful disease.” Jenn and her family also created Reese’s Magic Fund to fund solid tumor research at both Aflac Cancer Center and MaGIC to develop new treatments.

He was 13 when he landed in Miami where he learned to speak English and went on to earn a triple degree from FAU in business administration, operations, and entrepreneurship. 2 oz bourbon 4 oz fresh apple cider 1/2 oz lemon juice 1/2 oz simple syrup (adjust to taste) 1 cinnamon stick 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters Ice cubes Apple slices and cinnamon sticks for garnish (optional)

• Ground cinnamon and sugar for rimming the glass (optional)

DIRECTIONS: 01. Rim the Glass (Optional): If you want to add a decorative touch, mix a small amount of ground cinnamon and sugar on a plate. Moisten the rim of your glass with a lemon wedge and gently dip it into the cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat the rim. 02. Prepare the Cocktail: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes. Add the bourbon, fresh apple cider, lemon juice, and simple syrup to the shaker. Shake well for about 15-20 seconds to chill and mix the ingredients thoroughly. 03. Strain and Serve: Fill a rocks glass with fresh ice cubes. Strain the cocktail mixture from the shaker into the glass.

04. Add Bitters and Garnish: Add 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters to the top of the cocktail. This adds a pleasant aromatic complexity.
