Making Closets Count ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS In my closet, you’ll find cotton print shirts organized by color, neat piles of folded sweaters and shoes on shelves according to heel height. You’ll also find a not-so-neat pile of summer shirts (why do I need so many?), jeans that will never fit again and formal dresses that have no place in my life. What now? I asked the professionals at Closet Designs & More for help. We’ll work on a complete redesign, but first, the purge! “This is the time to purge your spring and summer items. Anything you didn’t wear should be donated. Chances are you won’t be wearing it next year either,” says Chelsea Ianitello at Closet Designs & More in Chamblee. We have included a list of worthy donation centers! Next up, take a look at your wardrobe and get organized. “This is a great time to try a capsule wardrobe by choosing a base neutral color and building as many outfits around that color as possible,” says Chelsea.

My base color is blue, that’s easy! “The idea is to have 30-40 pieces that work well together so there’s less struggle putting together an outfit. We commonly remind clients that you wear 20% of your clothes 80% of the time.” Designing a closet to give you space, actually see your wardrobe and help keep you organized is what Chelsea does. For a redesign, start a Pinterest board of appealing designs, colors and aesthetics for a dream closet. “We invite each client to our showroom to see the different colors and styles available from drawer and door fronts to hardware. If the client isn’t sure what they are looking for, we start with a standard white closet and match the hardware finish to the hardware of the space,” says Chelsea. Every closet can be dressed up or down

by changing drawer/door styles, using mirror or glass inserts and changing hardware. Designing a closet layout is more involved than deciding where to place your long hang versus where to hang your short hang. While this seems like a DIY weekend project, I think I will trust the professionals to maximize the space, provide a headache-free installation and use the newfound time to do something I love! Like shop for more clothes!

A spatchcock turkey – you could also call it a butterflied turkey – is a very simply, a whole turkey with the backbone removed and the bird flattened for cooking. OK … so why would you do this to a turkey? In addition to amazing your friends and family, there are several other advantages to spatchcocking a turkey (or a chicken, for that matter!) Have you ever ended up with a turkey breast that is dry by the time the thighs and legs are at 165°F? By flattening the turkey with the legs out to the sides, the thighs and drumsticks are more exposed, which means that they cook faster. This allows the dark meat to reach a higher temperature than light meat, so the turkey cooks evenly and the white and dark meat finish together. By cooking your bird on the grill (the fan favorite is the Big Green Egg), all the turkey’s skin is exposed to the full heat of the EGG at the same time. With none of the skin underexposed, you end up with juicy meat and crispy skin for the whole bird. Because it is flattened, a spatchcocked bird doesn’t use as much vertical space in the EGG. That leaves room for adding an EGGspander 2-tiered rack, so you can cook several sides above the turkey. And here’s a tip: once you take the turkey and sides off the EGG, use that residual heat to cook you holiday desserts! Grilling season is year-around in Georgia! Tucked away on just over 400 acres in Fayetteville, folks can be found providing support to a group of military veterans, on a high-ropes course with children who are differently-abled, or tending gardens of organically grown produce. A decade ago, Camp Southern Ground was a dream in the mind of GRAMMY Award-winning musician, Zac Brown. Today, it is a beautiful, world-class representation of Zac’s heart for the underserved and for those who have served. The youngest of 12 kids and step-kids in his family, Zac was sent to summer camp every chance his parents got. He started at camps in North Georgia at age 7 as a camper, then after college, worked as a staff member. Those camps were designed as inclusion camps, meaning the campers were both neurotypical and neurodiverse. The impact that the neurodiverse kids had on the typical kids was what Zac noticed the most. Zac learned the importance of an inclusive environment and that is what inspired the vision of Camp Southern Ground. The desire to break down barriers and misconceptions about those who are differently-abled has been the core of Zac’s mission. Over nine weeks of the summer, Camp Southern Ground (CSG) is, distinctively, a 4-way inclusion camp that brings together typically developing children, children with neurodevelopmental differences, children from underserved areas, and children from active CONTINUED >

duty military and gold star, silver star and white star military families. During every week of summer camp, all are connecting, learning and growing together. Veterans and their families also hold a special place in Zac’s heart. In non-summer months, Camp Southern Ground supports veteran mental health and wellbeing with two on-site programs. Because Zac has been able to leverage partnerships with organizations like the Avalon Network and others, including Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank of Home Depot, veterans can come from all over the country at no cost to them. Warrior PATHH (Progressive Alternative Training for Helping Heroes), which starts with a 7-day initiation at CSG, is a transformative, lifelong, Posttraumatic Growth-based training program followed by three months of dedicated support, training, accountability, and connection from a team of trained combat veterans. CSG’s signature Warrior Week program,

which also starts with a high-touch week at camp, is a well-being model to aid in the transition to life after military service. “We help vets discover their personal mission and passion and what they’re naturally suited for. We built that one from scratch,” said Mike Dobbs, President and CEO of Camp Southern Ground. This month, Veteran Family Camp is lighting up CSG. Military families can face a multitude of challenges from their time in service, experiences that can challenge even the strongest of families. Strengthening the family unit is crucial. Veteran Family Camp, a three-day, all-inclusive weekend of fun, food, communication and connection, helps provide veteran families with the tools and support they need to be the best they can be. “Since Zac Brown was already a national brand,” said Dobbs, “we spent our initial years building the operations with a national focus. That has allowed us to get the programs set up and rolled

out. We are now better equipped to serve locally.” Last summer, they also rolled out water safety training for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities and are planning more community family events. In a recent interview, Zac said, “Ignorance is such a tragedy because some never get to be around other kinds of people. When you can immerse someone into all of that variety of culture and ethnicity and background, they come out not being afraid of [differences]. We can help change a child’s life in one week of camp. GIVERS Bob and Linda Bonstein have enriched the Georgia Symphony Orchestra with countless hours of service. Bob has provided invaluable leadership as Board Chair before and during the pandemic and together with Linda, he has modeled integrity, kindness, and servant leadership. Bob and Linda have also each chaired the board at the Cobb YMCA, and individually served at their church, with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Eastern Cobb Council of PTAs, and the Cobb Community Foundation. They have lived in East Cobb since 1989. When she arrived in Georgia, Linda transitioned from a career in employee benefits to volunteering extensively in their childrens’ schools. She worked on education enrichment programs such as Odyssey of the Mind. Toward the end of his career, Bob began community volunteering, first with Big Brothers Big Sisters. He then Chaired the Board of the Cobb YMCA as it became part of the Metro-Atlanta Y. In addition, he recently joined the Board of the Cobb Community Foundation, which is dedicated to matching donors with charities and fostering community generosity. Both Bob and Linda believe strongly in building community and fostering unity and goodwill. They are active members of East Cobb United Methodist Church. When not volunteering, you will find them bicycling, usually on the Silver Comet Trail. “The GSO Board work combines love of music, service to the community, and fulfillment of the desire to build youth music education through supporting the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra (GYSO),” they say. Both Bob and Linda sing in the GSO Chorus. Why volunteer? “Contributing to the community always leads to a positive upward spiral, both for the community and the contributors.” They strongly recommend that donors consult with the Cobb Community Foundation to discover charities that align with their interests and passions. Bob and Linda are both now retired and have five grandchildren, ranging from 3-13 years old. They enjoy visiting their family in the Northeast as much as possible.

Rosan Hall believes in digging deep to find your gifts and sharing them with enthusiasm and dedication. “Look for ways to be involved. Join organizations that serve your business or community. Think more of yourself as a contributing member instead of a leader,” she says. “You will be recognized as a responsible person and leadership will want to recruit you. Always take your opportunities very seriously and never let leadership down.” She speaks from experience, having been instrumental in the growth of the Cobb County Coalition of Business Association since her friend Barbara Hickey started the organization more than 15 years ago to bring together people in the Cobb County business community. “When she passed away from ALS, three years ago, Bill Sterrett, Susan Hampton and I saw the good that has continued in the Associations and wanted it to continue. Since that time, I have taken the role of leader with Susan Hampton’s support,” Rosan says.

She has also served as president of Marietta Kiwanis, contributing her time as a K-Kids Advisor too. She is chair of the Barbara Hickey Childrens Fund/Constitution Day which Barbara started 15 years ago. The group has placed close to 3,000 Constitutions in the hands of Cobb and Marietta Schools students. She has served on the board of the Northeast Cobb Business Association and as chair of Public Safety and Co-Chair of the Business Women of NCBA. She, Jen Starks and Pam Oldaker proudly founded The Professional Women of East Cobb Business Association. Recently, Rosan was appointed to serve on the Cobb Housing Authority by JoAnn Birrell, District 3 Cobb Commissioner. Last year, she was elected the Secretary of the Georgia Federation of Republican Women and, she is currently chair of the North Metro Women’s Connection. Rosan moved to the community in 1968 with her husband and four children. Kim Gresh Kim Gresh has lived in Marietta her entire life. Like her mother, she was born at Kennestone Hospital. She and George Hartzog have been married 39 years. She believes in the importance of volunteering and fundraising. “Find your passion and it will shine through all you do for your community,” says Kim. Kim is President of S.A. Kim is actively involved with many nonprofit and civic organizations, including but not limited to, Boy Scouts of America, WellStar Foundation, liveSAFE Resources, Cobb Community Foundation, Board of Trustees for Shepherd Center and Marietta Metro Rotary Club. Proof of her contributions to her business and her community, Kim was awarded Cobb Citizen of the Year, Marietta Citizen of the Year, the liveSAFE Resources’ Women of Achievement Woman of the Year Award, Marietta School’s 2011 Alumnus of the Year, the Siegel Institute’s 2011 Phenomenal Woman of the Year and the 2020 Association of Fundraising Professionals Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year. Last but not least she is Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Earl & Rachel Smith Strand Theatre, where she has previously appeared in two Neil Simon plays and performance of Steel Magnolias.
