Home. So much contained in that little four-letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable. This month we wanted to look at a variety of different businesses in our community related towards your home. Laura Herman from loanDepot talks mortgages for people looking to purchase a home or those looking to make their home better. We talk to Ian Smith from Omega Exteriors about improving the exteriors of homes with roofing and siding. Kris Johnson gives us tips about keeping our homes safe from fire. Top Shelf Solar Solutions gives us insight about making our homes more efficient and environmentally friendly with solar power. Finally, Boulder Images presents some beautiful boulderscapes that can turn a plain yard into a gorgeous retreat. We feel like the lucky ones as we got to learn more about the businesses and individuals that comprise this city, and we hope the small lens into their lives and work brings people in this community together. As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you - in your city, neighborhood and most of all - your home. Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home. As always, I would like to thank all of Eagan City Lifestyle's sponsors. Their generous support enables us to get our magazine directly into our readers' homes. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me (amy.sousa@ citylifestyle.com) if you have a story to share or a business to recommend.

Fire Protection Starts at Home Kris Johnson discusses protecting your home from fire and other safety hazards. ARTICLE BY SHANNON HOFER-POTTALA

14

H OU SE CA LL | LOCA L SERVI CE S

Kris Johnson, founder of Johnson Consulting Specialists, LLC, is passionate about helping his clients stay safe and compliant with fire protection codes and other building safety codes. Kris started Johnson Consulting because he “was working for big companies where people weren’t appreciated,” says Kris. “I decided to branch out and start my own business. That was 10 years ago.” The first step in protecting a building from fire is knowing the fire code. “In every jurisdiction, the codes are different. Every state has their own code, for the most part, all based off one original code,” says Kris. “Knowing the code is key. We have an extensive library of all the codes.” Kris encourages people to stay ahead of the codes and to be proactive with their fire protection. He believes that common sense and experience are important when it comes to fire protection design, and if he could add content to the fire code, it would be just that: a section for common sense design principles. “We’ve done designs for buildings where the code has a gray area,” says Kris. “Coming up with innovative fire-protection designs to protect these unique buildings is a wonderful achievement for us, one that the buildings have been recognized for. The architects come up with incredible designs that are ahead of the code. They’re more progressive than the code is able to keep up with.” The staff at Johnson Consulting Specialists, LLC, are “some of the best fire protection engineers in the industry,” says Kris. “I consult with them. We go to conferences together.” In addition, Kris himself is always current with the latest fire-protection information. “I have to take or teach multiple classes every year

to maintain my certification,” he says. “I’m also a voting member of the National Fire Protection Association. I’ve been a member with them for 25 years now.” The importance of safety in the home cannot be understated, but there’s another meaningful aspect to the job, too: Kris gets to help people feel comfortable in their homes. “Safety is not something you want to have to worry about. Codes and standards are often reactive. When a disaster happens, things change, but we don’t want to wait for that to happen,” says Kris. He and his team pride themselves on being proactive. “It’s important to stay ahead of disasters to make people feel safe,” Kris says. “I wouldn’t want somebody to go shopping in a grocery store and have to worry, ‘Is this place safe? Am I going to be able to get out of here?’ There are some buildings that don’t entirely make me comfortable to be in, and that can really degrade your experience in those facilities. You want to feel safe.” Kris enjoys helping his clients save money and time, and he finds it rewarding to know that he is helping people stay safe. He has a special place in his heart for the city of Eagan, where he lived for almost 10 years. Kris has a few words of advice to share: “Change your smoke detector battery every October, and remember that the smoke detectors in your home don’t last forever. If it’s more than 10 years old, replace it,” he says. “Fire protection starts at home. It starts with each and every one of us.” To learn more about Johnson Consulting Specialists, LLC, visit johnsonconsulting specialists.com.

Live Boldly—Upgrade Your Backyard Libby and Todd share how to maximize your home with Boulder Images. ARTICLE BY SHANNON HOFER-POTTALA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BOULDER IMAGES

Adding boulders to your yard is one way to give your outdoor space a unique look while providing a number of practical purposes. Todd and Libby Montreuil from Boulder Images describe the process.

WHAT IS BOULDER IMAGES? Although the boulder industry is relatively new, Todd, one of the first to specialize in boulders, has been in the industry for 37 years. Todd came into contact with a developer and formed a partnership; Boulder Images was opened in 1999, although the original idea came about long before that “by accident,” says Todd. “We were asked to try to set some boulders in a water feature years ago. Somebody heard we had equipment that could move a boulder; we got another call, and another call. Before you

knew it, we switched over to doing 50% boulders, and by 1992 we did 100% boulders.” Boulder Images is not your typical landscape company. It’s a company that specializes in boulders, often used for retaining walls, fire pits, stairways, and other structures. When it comes to reviving your yard, they can replace your tired timber walls or crumbling block walls. “When it comes to building a home, everyone understands that you don’t have the plumber install the carpet,” says Libby. “The same thing goes with the landscaper—we’re not the general contractor. We’re very much a specialty crew.” That specialization includes choosing each and every boulder used in a given project. “The owner of the company goes to all the quarries around the country and handpicks every single boulder,” says Libby. “In Minnesota, you don’t get a ton of time outside each year. Minnesotan people, when we can get outdoors, we do. We live outside. With Boulder Images, we’re trying to give people a space outside that is not only visually pleasing but also gives people a good feeling.”

“For each job site, we meet to talk about the job. If he has any questions at all, he actually goes out to the job sites and looks at my design so he knows exactly which boulders to pick for each and every customer. Color, shape, layout, function.” Boulder Images is set apart from others because of their specialized equipment, too. “Nobody else has this kind of machinery,” Libby says. “We’re some of the only folks in the industry that actually specialize in this, and we’ve been doing it longer than anyone else in the industry.” It’s evident that Todd and Libby love their jobs and are passionate about boulder landscaping. “What fills my bucket is making people happy and giving people a space they can love,” says Libby. “In Minnesota, you don’t get a ton of time outside each year. Minnesotan people, when we can get outdoors, we do. We live outside. With Boulder Images, we’re trying to give people a space outside that is not only visually pleasing but also gives people a good feeling.”

WHY DO YOU LOVE EAGAN? If you’re wanting to get a project done this year but worried there won’t be enough time over the summer, don’t worry. “Eagan gets preferential treatment from us,” says Libby. “Eagan doesn’t have what’s called seasonal road closings,” says Todd. “When the snow starts melting in March, we can contract up and get a project going. For other places, it’s like we’re ready to go, the snow has melted, it’s dry out, but the roads are too soft so they won’t allow the equipment we need on the roads.” These road restrictions delay projects in other cities, which benefits clients in Eagan who want to complete a project early in the summer. “Since Eagan doesn’t have seasonal road requirements, we can take care of Eagan

20

O UT D OOR LIV IN G | HOME S E RVI CE S

clients first,” says Libby. “Even if we’re booked to the end of the summer, if someone from Eagan wants a project done, we can get that done in April before the start of the season,” Todd says.

HOW DO HOMEOWNERS DECIDE WHAT TO DO WITH THEIR BACKYARD? Working with Boulder Images starts with a complimentary design consultation with Libby. During that conversation, she tries to “get a sense of how your family functions and how you want to function,” Libby says. “That way I can understand how you want to use the space.” For some families, it’s important to have a lot of sittable space in a retaining wall for hosting large events. For others, a place to garden without worrying about plants taking over the lawn is crucial. Families who value closeness and coziness might want a fire pit or a cove. “Your home is the biggest investment you’ll ever make,” says Libby. “You spend so much to purchase your property—why not use every square inch? I’m a farm girl, so I believe in getting as many different uses out of a space as I can, so if I’m going to pay for something, I’m going to use every inch.” Landscaping with boulders can create a natural, timeless aesthetic that can add beauty and value to your property. For more information, visit boulderimages.com.

FUN FACT Todd and Libby connected through Boulder Images, so the company holds an extra-special place in their hearts. “I got into it because I was a landscape designer,” says Libby. “I would hire Boulder Images. I hired Boulder Images for like 10 years to do boulders, so I got to be his boss, technically. That’s how we met. I ended up marrying my boulder guy.”

THE LAST EXTERIORS COMPANY YOU’LL NEED IAN SMITH DISCUSSES THE IMPORTANCE OF A ROOF AND A HOME YOU CAN TRUST.

Working with a professional exteriors company can be the key to keeping your home protected from the elements and achieving the look you want for your home’s exterior.

WHAT IS OMEGA EXTERIORS?

ARTICLE BY SHANNON HOFER-POTTALA PHOTOGRAPHY BY OMEGA EXTERIORS

24

C UR B A P P E A L | HOM E SERVI CE S

Ian Smith, founder of Omega Exteriors, knew he wanted to open his own company after working at another company in the field. “From the first day, I decided that after 5 years in the industry I was going to start my own business,” Ian says. “I started it with 3 people. In a few months, I was able to increase that to a team of 22. It’s been a great experience.”

When Ian started Omega Exteriors, he had a vision to be the last exteriors company clients would use. “Omega means last in Greek,” he says. “We go above and beyond, whether it’s with quality control checks, the quality of our materials, or the communication between us and the homeowner. I like to go above and beyond for the homeowner and give them peace of mind.” Although Omega Exteriors offers many services, including roofing, siding, and gutters, their most popular service is “definitely roofing,” says Ian. “This past year, we did about 300 roofs.” With the weather in Minnesota, it’s no wonder roofing services are exceedingly popular. “Hail doesn’t pick favorites,” Ian says. “People should get their roof and exterior inspected after every storm. While hail can be varied in size, what matters is how hard it is and how strong the winds are. Most homeowners don’t realize they have a damaged home until it becomes a problem.” One of the reasons people might not notice damages right away is that they don’t expect to—roofs in Minnesota have shorter lifespans than the same roofs in other locations due to the Minnesotan weather. “In Minnesota, while most people think they have a 30 year use for their roof, the average roof only lasts 18 years,” Ian says. Ian and the Omega Exteriors team.

Different types of roofing impact the longevity of your roof, too. “Asphalt is your general product with a life expectancy of about 30 years,” says Ian. “Some higher-end shingles are going to be between 40 and 50 years, A synthetic tile has about a 50-year life expectancy and gives you a very high quality roof.”

WHY DO YOU LOVE YOUR JOB? “I’m truly helping people,” says Ian. “I’m able to take a home that someone may have lived in for the past 5 years or the past 30 years, make a change, and see the homeowner be super happy, see them loving the end result. Their face after showing them the final work is incredible. We do drone pictures before and after so they can truly see the difference.” In addition, Ian speaks highly of the staff at Omega Exteriors. “We have such a great team,” he says, “and we’re truly able to impact their lives. We want to create a great culture for our staff and in our relationships with our clients.” “I do what I love every day,” says Ian. “I don’t work a day in my life.” To learn more, visit omega-exteriors.com.

HOME BUYING WITH LAURA HERMAN ARTICLE BY SHANNON HOFER-POTTALA

Laura Herman, loan consultant, shares her experiences with homebuying, volunteering, and finding her passion.

When you step out of your comfort zone and pursue your passions, you open yourself up to opportunity and possibility. For Laura Herman, stepping outside of her comfort zone allowed her to discover new fulfillment and purpose in her life. Although Laura is now a loan consultant at Loan Depot, “I started in nonprofits,” says Laura. “I was being trained to become the executive director. I had never known what I wanted to do, and when they started training me, I realized I would be there at least another 3 years—then, as the executive director, I wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving for another 10, so I was looking at 13 years of my life. I asked myself, ‘Is this what I want to do?’” Ultimately, Laura realized she wasn’t feeling fulfilled by her work and began exploring other careers. She attended interviews and informal conversations in an attempt to discover the career that she truly wanted. “I met up with a mortgage lender for coffee,” says Laura. “Afterward, I could feel it in my whole body: this is what I want to do.” Laura’s own home buying experience influenced her choice. “I was terrified—I was buying a house

28

by myself. My mortgage lender was really kind and made me feel like I could do it,” says Laura. “I want to work to support people directly, to help them feel empowered, and to make them realize they can buy a house no matter their circumstances.” Because of her initial nervousness and ultimate feeling of confidence after purchasing her own home, Laura especially enjoys working with women independently buying a home. “I know that it can feel scary to be doing it without a partner,” she says. Laura also enjoys working with veterans. “My partner is a veteran, and I give so much credit to veterans and to active service members,” says Laura. “First-time homebuyers are the third group that I enjoy working with because home buying can be a really overwhelming process. I like to make it calm and joyful for them.” Establishing a sense of comfort and peace in your home is essential for feeling relaxed, happy, and at home. “I grew up with a lot of anxiety. Having a safe place where you can feel calm is so important,” says Laura. “Everyone deserves to feel fulfilled and to thrive in their home and in their life.” For more information, visit loandepot.com.

Who is Laura Herman?

1| Laura continues to give back by keeping in touch with her previous employer, myHealth for Teens & Young Adults, fostering and training a service dog through Helping Paws, and volunteering at Ruby’s Pantry to give people access to low-price, high-quality food.

2| Laura bought her home to provide her dog, Penny, with a wonderful home environment. Penny is a rescue and one of Laura’s two dogs.

3| Gladys, the dog that Laura is training to be a service dog, has gone to training class every week since she was 8 weeks old. Gladys will be paired with someone later this year to provide support for a veteran or first responder with PTSD.

5 Hot Trends

ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY BY J.A. STENGER PHOTOGRAPHY

in Kitchen Design A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone.

When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TA K I N G T H E C O U N T E R M AT E R I A L U P THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

HIDDEN STORAGE, VISIBLE APPLIANCES

Brooke’s Pro Tip:

Gone are the days of it being a given to hide the fridge behind custom cabinets. Many brands of appliances are so beautiful and sleek these days, homeowners want to see them rather than hide them behind a cabinet facade. Small appliances, however, are another story. Custom cabinets and “appliance garages” aren’t going away anytime soon. Form and function make them a desirable addition to any kitchen.

I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.

WA R M I N G U P THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

BOLD H A R D WA R E Mixed metals and sizes are having a moment in kitchens across America. Brooke says not to shy away from a variety of sizes of pulls and handles, depending on the drawer and door size. For instance, you may see a mixture of longer pulls on larger drawers and square knobs on smaller glassware cabinets - and that’s more than just ok - that’s recommended. As the heart of the home, kitchens shouldn’t feel sterile and hyper-coordinated - they should feel inviting and tailored to the space. Since no two kitchens will be exactly alike, feel free to boldly mix the hardware sizes and styles to the needs of your kitchen.

C O N T R A S T, C O N T R A S T, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen. Investing in Solar Power at Home Randy Schaefer explains the benefits of solar power for your home.

ARTICLE BY SHANNON HOFER-POTTALA It’s time to harness the power of solar energy. Randy Schaefer of Top Shelf Solar Solutions explains why and how. “There’s an ancient proverb: ‘The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.’ The best time to go solar in Minnesota was two years ago, before inflation became rampant. The second-best time is now,” says Randy. “There’s no reason to wait.” Solar power is a renewable and clean source of energy, with no greenhouse gas emissions. Solar power can also provide energy independence and reduce electricity bills. “Utility costs are going to more than double in 13 years and more than triple in 25 years,” says Randy. “A $200 electric bill now is going to be $650 in 25 years. If you invest in solar now and your monthly payment is $200, it will still be $200 in 25 years, when your neighbors are paying $650. What we’re doing is looking forward and saying ‘How can we save you money long-term?’”

Solar panels are built for the future and require little maintenance. “The warranties on our panels are 25 years,” says Randy. “The life expectancy is 35 to 40 years. We’re talking about free electricity after the panels are paid off, and until that point, we’re talking about predictable, stable costs. There’s no other product out there that you can get a 25-year warranty for and that will pay for itself.” In addition, Top Shelf Solar Solutions offers “over 20 different financing options,” Randy says. In fact, their most popular payment plan has no required payment for the first 12 months. “The people that want to buy solar are socially-conscious, environmentally-conscious, and conscious of their checkbook,” says Randy. “I help people keep money in their pockets and increase value by going green.” For more information, visit topshelfsolarsolutions.com.

Solar power boast s great benef it s. “Because solar uses the power of the sun, there’s no moving par t s. Plus, an average Minnesota residential system is going to prevent over seven tons of carbon dioxide exhaust , as opposed to if we were relying on a coal - burning plant . There are no emissions. It’s clean.” —Randy Schaefer of Top Shelf Solar Solutions MAR CH 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E .C O M / E AGA N
