LIFESTYLE LETTER
To a Happy New Year
January 2023 PUBLISHER
Amy Sousa | amy.sousa@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
I would like to wish all of our readers a very happy New Year! For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons, and goals to pursue. One area I am working on this year is on making time to care for myself. Many of us spend so much time taking care of others, whether it’s our job, our kids, or our spouse; we don’t make time to take care of ourselves. For me personally, I start my week off with Dr. Bryce at ChiroWay and my favorite flexologist Matt at the Stretch Lab. After my weekly visits, I am ready for whatever the week is ready to throw my way. Both ChiroWay and StretchLab are featured in this issue. All of us need some fun in our lives—especially on a cold winter day. The Burrow is a great spot to check out to beat the winter blues with some great food and drinks, arcade games, mini golf, and axe throwing. Be sure to visit Kiersten at Step Up Nutrition. Whether you are looking for an energizing tea or a nutritious shake, she can whip up something to satisfy you. When it comes to anything in life—business, finance, food, home, or personal health—it’s not what you do some days that move the needle—it’s what you do most days, for better or for worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and crème brûlée every night for dinner isn’t best for your health but doing so occasionally might be fine. It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most-of-the-time choices. So plan the vacation and work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym and enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. Remember, it’s not what you do some days—it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling, and fabulous 2023. As always, I would like to thank all of Eagan City Lifestyle's sponsors. Their generous support enables us to get our magazine directly into our readers' homes. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me (amy.sousa@citylifestyle. com) or our Editorial Coordinator, Shannon (shannon.hofer-pottala@ citylifestyle.com) if you have a story to share or a business to recommend.

entertainment
FOR ALL
With two Twin Cities locations, The Burrow is an entertainment venue serving families looking for weekend fun, friends looking for a great night out, bachelorette parties, birthday parties, and bigger groups. “The Burrow was created as a Minnesotan gaming den fit for all ages. Restaurants and bars used to be the go-to places to hunker down, but that’s changing,” said owner Thomas Wartman. Located in both Oakdale and Victoria, The Burrow offers games ranging from axe throwing to mini golf, steel-tip darts, go-karts, golf and sports simulators, and more. “While many entertainment venues center around one particular activity, at The Burrow, guests can choose their own adventure,” said Thomas. Another sister venue of The Burrow is The Fair on 4, located on the 4th floor at the Mall of America. “The Fair on 4 features one of North America’s only indoor two-story go-kart tracks, with stateof-the-art electric Sodi go-karts,” said Thomas. “Guests will find a fair-themed amusement hall, 11 full-service axe lanes, classic arcades, an 8-foot tall stuffed bear, as well as scratch-made food and boozy cocktails!” The ability to cater to all ages and keep everyone entertained sets these venues apart from restaurants and bars. “We consider The Burrow to be adult-focused, but family-friendly,” said Thomas. “Parents find themselves at ease with ample space for kids to explore while they sit back and enjoy quality food and drink or decide to join the fun.”

ENTERTAINMENT ON TAP Demand for these entertainment venues is on the rise. According to a 2022 Business Wire study, the family indoor entertainment industry is anticipated to reach $69.5 billion by 2030, a 10.9% increase from last year. In the Twin Cities alone, entertainment venues for indoor mini golf and pickleball courts have hit the market in recent years, like Thr3 Jack in the North Loop which features sports simulators. Hopping on the pickleball trend, The Burrow in Oakdale will open four indoor and outdoor courts in the spring of 2023. In Minnesota, when it gets cold outside, these indoor entertainment venues provide the perfect way for friends and families to gather and stay active—and eat good food. “We know that friendly competition pairs best with good hearty food, hand-crafted cocktails, and local taps,” said Thomas. “Our scratch-made kitchen features artisan pizzas and house-smoked meats to fill even the heartiest of appetites. Guests can choose up to 40 local tap beers, a variety of spirits, or one of our feature margaritas on our newly-released craft cocktail menu.” Guests certainly won’t go hungry and can easily spend a whole day at one location, making this type of venue both fun and convenient for large groups. “Family groups, party buses with bachelorette/bachelor groups, corporate gatherings, 40th/50th birthday parties; all of these groups are flocking to venues where the menu isn’t just food and drink, but activities too,” said Thomas.
ACTIVITIES FOR DAYS! Activities vary between the Victoria and Oakdale locations, but groups can partake in golf and sports simulators, mini golf, mini bowling, laser tag, and of course axe throwing. All locations offer leagues, and axe-throwing activities include demos and safety instructions so everyone can feel at ease. Live entertainment is also on the menu, and guests can enjoy local acoustics acts as they take part in a variety of activities. While the Victoria location is The Burrow’s original venue, a unique offering at the Oakdale location is “Foxy’s Den,” a premium event space with cozy décor, a dedicated bar, lounge seating, and endless games. Perfect for corporate events, birthday parties, or any celebration. So instead of binge-watching Netflix this winter, check out The Burrow and keep the winter blues at bay. Stay active, make memories, gather with your favorite people, and enjoy delicious food and drinks. All information on activities, private events, locations, prices, and food can be found at theburrowmn.com. To see all the fun to be had at the Mall of America location, head to thefairon4.com.

ADJUSTING TO THE NEW YEAR Not everyone is familiar with chiropractors. Bryce encourages people who are curious about or wary of chiropractors to learn more about the field. “Look up what a chiropractor actually is. Look up all the benefits that can be achieved: sleep, digestion, healthy immunity, overall balance, consciousness of the body.” Having a healthy spine should not be taken for granted.
WHO SHOULD SEE A CHIROPRACTOR?
20
Health is one of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions. People want to exercise more, eat healthier, or drink less. But what about caring for your spine? I sat down with Bryce Hill from ChiroWay Chiropractic to learn more about what to expect from your next chiropractic appointment.
WHAT IS CHIROWAY CHIROPRACTIC? PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA CLINE
ARTICLE BY SHANNON HOFER-POTTALA
LEARNING MORE ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC CARE WITH DR. BRYCE HILL.
EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S
ChiroWay is a chiropractic clinic that does adjustments to the spine. A chiropractic adjustment is when chiropractors apply controlled, sudden pressure to a joint in order to improve its motion or function. The Eagan location opened in March of 2022, although the business itself is older. “ChiroWay was founded in 2010,” says Bryce. “The chiropractor who founded it had a vision of multiple centers working together to serve the most people possible.”
“Anyone with a spine,” says Bryce. “Only 12% of the population sees a chiropractor right now. We want to change that.” Although most people only visit a chiropractor when they’re experiencing a problem, according to Bryce, the best time to stop by is “before you’re in pain. When we’re in pain, all we can think about is getting out of pain—that’s what your whole life revolves around. Be proactive rather than reactive. Go to a chiropractor before things get bad.”
WHAT CAN CUSTOMERS EXPECT FROM AN APPOINTMENT? During your first appointment, “We get to know you,” says Bryce. “It’s 45 minutes. There’s a consultation, an exam, and an adjustment. We get everything we need, paperwork-wise, to make sure you’re suitable for care.” Once the first appointment has been completed, the schedule is much more flexible. “After that, you’ll never have to make another appointment again,” says Bryce. “Come in when the office is open, sign in at the front door, and grab a table. We’ll get you adjusted and you can go on with your life. Everybody’s busy. We’re here—come in when it works for you.” After your adjustment, you’ll feel an “instant impact,” says Bryce. “As chiropractors, we feel those muscles that are overworked from stress. We see the difference immediately in
people’s emotions, well-being, and attitude for the day. Everyone leaves in a better mood than when they came in and people are hopefully less stressed.”
WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE DO TO MAINTAIN SPINE HEALTH? “Posture,” says Bryce. “But posture is tough. You don’t know that you have incorrect posture until it becomes an issue.” Maintaining correct posture can be even more difficult for people living fast-paced lives. “Everybody is busy and not always focusing on their posture,” Bryce says. “If you can, take time to correct as best you can: put your shoulders back, and if you work at a desk every day, try to create a standing desk or get up and walk around for 5 minutes every hour.” It can be challenging to form a new habit in the workplace, but the value of a healthy spine cannot be understated. “Bring consciousness away from work and to your body,” says Bryce. “Take care of yourself. You only get one spine—take care of the spine you have.”
WHAT IS YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION? “I want to serve the masses of Eagan,” says Bryce. “I want to get to know as many people as possible, make as many connections, and better the community. When we can take stress away, the community can grow as a whole. I want to help as many people as humanly possible.” Visit chiroway.com to learn more.

SOMETHING TO SMILE ABOUT ARTICLE BY SHANNON HOFER-POTTALA PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA CLINE
Getting to know Apelgren Dental with Dr. Katee and Dr. Jayce Apelgren.
Apelgren Dental offers both cosmetic and traditional dentistry. Services at Apelgren include Invisalign, implants, bleaching, and more.
WHAT ABOUT APELGREN ARE YOU PARTICULARLY PROUD OF? Katee: Our reviews on Google say it all. We have the most 5-star reviews in Eagan. New patients walk in the door and say “I came because those reviews are amazing.” Then they go and share their thoughts with family and friends. I think that’s what sets us apart from other practices. Jayce: Last year, we were nominated for the Emerging Leaders of the Year Award in Eagan. COVID hit us only six months after we opened and we were able to survive and thrive, so to recognize that was really great. We didn’t win, but we thought it was a great accomplishment to get recognized together.
WHY EAGAN? WHAT ABOUT THE COMMUNITY BRINGS YOU JOY? Katee: I grew up in the South Metro; Eagan is one of the bordering cities. We love the feeling of a small, close-knit community that is only a hop, skip, and a jump away from the lakes, shops, downtown, or other attractions of the big city. Eagan has beautiful trails, great connections, and it’s growing all the time. There are so many perks that come along with its beauty.
24
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S
Jayce: I’m from a very small town in the country. Even though Eagan is a city, it’s spread out, it has nice parks, and it feels like you’re in the countryside at times. Living in Eagan is being in city life but also makes me feel at home. Since moving to the area, we’ve gotten to know our staff and our patients. We’ve become really involved in the community and we love it.
HOW ARE YOU INVOLVED WITH THE EAGAN COMMUNITY? Jayce: We’re involved in lots of ways. We share a space with The Open Door Pantry; we run down there and take toothpaste or toothbrushes when they need it. We’ve donated over $12,000 worth of dental materials to Team Mutomo and Wellness for Africa. We also donate to Bags of Hope. A lot of these organizations are mentioned to us by our patients. Katee: We also do Give Kids a Smile, going to local schools and other places to provide free dental care to kids in need. We give free oral education and have toothpaste and toothbrush giveaways. I look forward to going to the schools and around the community. Visit apelgrendental.com to book your appointment or learn more today.
D R . J AY C E & K AT E E A P E L G R E N
What is your New Year’s Resolution? Jayce: We have a seven-month-old. My resolution is to be the best parent, the best father, and the best role model that I can be. Katee: Absolutely. As cliché as this is, another resolution is to start early with dental hygiene. Provide that education while they're young.
What New Year’s Resolution should readers make to maintain healthy teeth? Jayce: Floss! Oral healthcare is very important. Katee: Come visit us. We’re here and we’d love to meet you.

Virginia Jansen discusses the importance of getting stretched. ARTICLE BY SHANNON HOFER-POTTALA

January inspires people to set fitness goals. But how do you make sure you’re feeling up to the task? Virginia Jansen, franchise owner of StretchLab in Eagan and St. Paul, discusses the purpose and procedure of getting stretched.
WHAT IS STRETCHLAB? StretchLab is a facility that stretches clients, providing a deeper stretch than could be achieved without the help of a Flexologist, or stretching professional. “A Flexologist is one of our highly-trained employees,” says Virginia. “To be a Flexologist, they need a background in fitness and a certification—some of our Flexologists have a college degree in kinesiology, some have a personal trainer certification. They are passionate about fitness and helping others. We have yoga instructors, dance instructors, massage therapists, PNAs, PNCs, and more.”
28
G E T ACT IV E | FITN ESS
WHAT SHOULD CUSTOMERS EXPECT FROM A VISIT TO STRETCHLAB? “We have 25 and 50 minute appointments. Most people will see the largest benefit if they go 50 minutes once per week,” says Virginia. “People who pick 25 minute sessions are short on the time that they need. We encourage people to come for 50 minutes if they can.” In addition to setting aside time to get stretched, “Having a plan is really important,” says Virginia. “You need to know what your fitness goals are so you can meet and achieve those goals.” To determine stretching goals, customers will experience a Maps Machine. “The machine lets us know what’s going on with your body,” says Virginia. “For example, a red signal is caution, yellow means it might become a concern, and green means you have good flexibility and mobility in that area. If your shoulders are showing bright red, your Flexologist will know to take extra care in that area to avoid stressing it.”
The Maps Machine allows your Flexologist to understand your needs. It’s also a way for customers to track their mobility progress.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF STRETCHING? “There are so many benefits,” says Virginia. “Mobility, flexibility, stress levels, a better way of life.” Protecting that better way of life becomes more valuable with time. “As we age, we lose our flexibility. Everything changes,” says Virginia. “Mobility becomes even more important.” Stretching isn’t just for the older generation. “Starting young is always important, especially for child athletes,” says Virginia. “Make sure those muscles are taken care of.” Ultimately, being old or young doesn’t matter when it comes to stretching. Virginia says, “Stretching is for everyone.” Visit stretchlab.com to learn more.

LEGGINGS 3 WA Y S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS
Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.
BRUNCH A FTER BA R R E Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. Don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.
MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing.
SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist and added fur-lined high tops to provide practical footwear.
Snag some of the key details of the outfits here!
