Happy Holidays from the Eagan City Lifestyle Team! The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of it all that reflects that best. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. In this issue, we talk to some members of the community who have careers that may keep them away from family over the holidays. Nic Stevens from The Maids gives us his ideas about getting your home ready for holiday visitors. April Amys from April Star Interiors shows what makes her home beautiful and cozy for the winter. We’ve also compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and support our local businesses. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other, extending grace, empathy, and love. Every birth is a miracle, every time. It’s so rewarding to see life coming into the world. HAVE YOU EVER HAD TO MISS AN IMPORTANT HOLIDAY OR EVENT DUE TO WORK? Yes. I worked nights for many years so I could have the daytime with my kids. As I got older, I needed more flexibility, so daytime became a priority to work for me so I could be home in the evenings with my kids. It’s definitely hard to miss family times, but I know I was there to help people and my family would be there for me. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY TRADITION? I have 4 daughters. We have our own little Christmas breakfast, just me and my girls. That’s something I always look forward to, having them all under the same roof again and all to myself.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT BEING A FIREFIGHTER? Most of the time you go on a call, and someone’s impacted by something that’s happened. A lot of times, people don’t realize that we are also impacted. Mental health and the right coping mechanisms are extremely important and prevalent in fire service right now. HAVE YOU EVER HAD TO MISS AN IMPORTANT HOLIDAY OR EVENT DUE TO WORK? Yes. It’s tough. I have an understanding spouse— they’re the unsung heroes in all of it. They have to be a single parent 33.3% of the year because that’s how much we work. I take advantage of those days I am with my family. We make memories. I’ve tried to reflect recently on how fast my kids are growing up and how fast life is happening and seize the day. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WINTER ACTIVITY? I love going snowmobiling and ice fishing. My wife and I also try to make a trip to Lutsen every year to go snowboarding.

When I was first starting my career, I was going to be gone for Christmas because I had an overnight in Washington, D.C., so my wife flew out on Christmas day to meet me. It was great. Then I flew out the day after to Boston and back while she stayed in D.C. and we got to spend that night together as well. That was cool even though we weren’t at home. Another time, I was supposed to be home on the morning of Christmas. We found out we were going to be delayed by 3 or 4 hours; I missed my connecting flight and we got home at 11pm. I was home for the last hour of Christmas, but at least I made it. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT THE HOLIDAY SEASON? Time with family, even if you can’t spend time together on the actual holiday. When you get home from traveling and you’re with your family and friends, it’s the best. The rewarding part about flying during the holidays is that you’re bringing people to see their family and friends, too. Whether you’re traveling to see your loved ones or traveling home, that’s what it’s all about. It’s nice to play a part in bringing people together.

Dust while you go! Grab a couple of microfiber cloths and dust that holiday décor while you set up.

Don’t be afraid to throw stuff out. This one might be tough for some. Consider tossing or donating the decorations you haven’t used for the last 2 years. Decluttering is a great way to free up storage space and tidy up the entire process.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
