“These Hyer boots I’m wearing,” Hughes says, displaying the ornately stitched olivegreen pair, “they’re working boots. Even though they look sharp, they’re definitely cowboy boots—super comfortable whether you’re riding or just walking around.” For the Hugheses, that versatility combined with durability is the very definition luxury. When the little extras are meaningful, they add up to sensible investments. The hats will comprise custom pieces crafted from European hare and beaver pelts, shaped by hand and built to last decades. “They wear really well in snow or rain and keep their shape,” Hughes says, adding that Boot and Brim is equipped to reshape hats on site. Beyond retail, Boot and Brim aims to weave local artistry into its seams. Durango craftspeople are building its furnishings, and the shop will host pop-ups featuring jewelry, leatherwork, and silver accessories. Each month, a charity—like Adaptive Sports Association or the Sierra Club—will enjoy the spotlight at in-store events. At its heart, Hughes says, the store’s philosophy is simple: “In the West, a hat and boots are not just what you wear—it’s who you are.” Whether you’re a local rancher or a visitor looking to carry a bit of the West home, Boot and Brim promises a piece of that enduring craftsmanship—something built to last and made with pride.

“There’s 64 steps in making a customized hat,” Randy Hughes explains. He removes his own cappuccino-foam colored cowboy hat to explain the processes, from pelt preparation and stitching to brim and body shaping. Hughes’ ability to notice the minutest details was instilled long ago as he trained to become a marine biologist. Starting in December, he will get to ply that skill daily in Boot and Brim, downtown Durango’s new luxury boutique offering heirloom-quality cowboy hats and boots. Co-founded with his wife, Amy, the store expresses their shared exuberance for the Western spirit. “We’re passionate about the Western heritage,” Hughes says. “Being out here, you just really appreciate the culture, the nature, the hard work.” He notes that while he and his wife raised their seven children in northern Arizona’s horse country, the family frequently vacationed in Durango. They are thrilled to now live in a town steeped in frontier history—yet curiously lacking an outlet for high-end Western wear. Boot and Brim solves that conundrum. It is a space devoted to craftsmanship, authenticity, and the enduring identity of the American West. Inside, the shelves will be adorned with boots from Lucchese and Hyer—makers with roots stretching back to the 1800s—and White’s Boots, the century-old brand known among smokejumpers and outfitters.

THE SHADOW SIDE OF NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

Every January, the San Juans fill with people trying to become better versions of themselves. We work out. We click into our skis for those early season laps, hoping the fresh snow will carry us into a fresher version of who we want to be. On the surface, resolutions look like discipline and motivation. Underneath, something quieter often drives them.

WHEN “SELF-IMPROVEMENT” IS REALLY SELF-PUNISHMENT

A lot of resolutions do not come from clarity. They come from shame. Many of us decide to change because a voice inside says we should be better, stronger, more fit, more productive. In a community like ours where grit and ambition run high, it is easy to take that same intensity that gets us out on adventures and turn it inward like a weapon.

The truth is that pressure to transform often comes from an old pattern that feels ignored. When we set a goal from that place, we end up at war with ourselves. We sabotage. We push too hard. Or the whole thing burns out before February even lands. CONTINUED >

GROWTH WITHOUT THE SELF-ATTACK

The alternative is not abandoning growth. It is slowing down enough to see what is actually fueling the impulse to change. If the driver is fear, comparison, or the old story that we are not enough, then no resolution will feel good. If the driver is something steadier, the change feels honest instead of punishing. This is where deeper inner work matters. Our conscious goals often clash with the unconscious parts of us we have shoved out of the way. Those inner patterns are not trying to block us. They want to be understood. When we meet them with curiosity, instead of judgment, the shadow becomes a guide instead of an enemy.

DURANGO KNOWS ABOUT LISTENING TO THE TERRAIN

Locals here get this on a body level. Just like you would not charge a backcountry line without scanning the snowpack, you cannot bulldoze yourself into a new identity without checking what is happening inside. Inner work has its own terrain. It asks for attention, honesty, and adjustment along the way. Support helps with that. Not because anyone needs to be fixed, but because it is almost impossible to see your own blind spots. A coach or guide helps you notice what is running the show hidden beneath the surface so your commitments come from alignment rather than pressure.

LET YOUR RESOLUTIONS SOFTEN

As the year begins, try loosening your grip on the resolutions. Let them breathe. Ask what part of you is rushing. Ask what part is tired. Ask what part is ready to grow on its own timeline. There is nothing weak about choosing a slower and more truthful path. Most people here understand that the long routes are often the most rewarding. And remember that everyone around you is wrestling with their own patterns too, even the ones who look like they have it all dialed in and wrapped up in a bow. Growth is universal. Messiness is universal. Compassion makes it easier to stay in it.

Durango winters are stunning: snow-globe mornings, cozy fireplaces, and rebellious hair. The dry air, indoor heat, and freezing temps also create the perfect storm for brittle strands and flyaways. As a stylist, I see winter hair carnage every season, and trust me, it’s preventable. Here’s your cheeky, straight-from-the-chair guide to maintaining healthy winter hair.

Hydration is your superpower. Cold air pulls moisture out, so gentle cleansing and deep hydration are essential. Weekly masks and lightweight leave-ins keep strands soft, smooth, and protected. For salon-quality care, hydrating lines like Mr. Smith Restore keep hair balanced without heaviness. Bond-repair formulas such as K18 Mole Repair strengthen from the inside out to help reverse dryness, brittleness, and environmental stress. Heat styling doesn’t have to be the enemy, just use it intentionally. Many designers, like me, are shifting their attention from purely aesthetic choices to finishes that actively support human health, not only for those who live with these finishes but also for those who apply them. Among the most impactful and easily accessible are zero-VOC paints and natural plasters such as clay and lime, which offer a powerful blend of beauty, performance, and improved indoor air quality. Indoor air can be more polluted than outdoor air, often due to off-gassing from conventional paints and synthetic coatings. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can linger for months or even years, contributing to headaches, respiratory irritation, and poor sleep. This will be accomplished through collaboration between the medical director, hyperbaric technicians, owners and managers, and outside consultations where needed.

WHAT IS HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY (HBOT)?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that enhances the body’s natural healing process through the inhalation of 100% oxygen in a total body chamber, where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. It is used for a wide variety of treatments, usually as part of an overall medical care plan. Under normal circumstances, oxygen is transported throughout the body only by red blood cells. With HBOT, oxygen is dissolved into all of the body’s fluids, including the plasma, central nervous system fluids, lymph, and bone, allowing it to be carried to areas where circulation is diminished or blocked. In this way, extra oxygen can reach damaged tissues, and the body can support its own healing process. The increased oxygen greatly enhances the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria, reduces swelling, and allows new blood vessels to grow more rapidly into affected areas. It is a simple, non-invasive, 100% natural, and painless treatment.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HBOT?

It has long been known that healing in many areas of the body cannot take place without appropriate oxygen levels in the tissue. Most illnesses and injuries occur, and often linger, at the cellular or tissue level. In many cases, such as circulatory problems, non-healing wounds, and strokes, adequate oxygen cannot reach the damaged area, and the body’s natural healing ability is unable to function properly. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy provides this extra oxygen naturally and with minimal side effects. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy improves the quality of life for patients in many areas when standard medicine is not working. Many conditions, such as stroke,

cerebral palsy, head injuries, and chronic fatigue, have responded favorably to HBOT.

HOW DOES HBOT HEAL?

Inflammation can act as a barrier to oxygen reaching damaged tissue. Hyperbaric oxygen chambers pressurize oxygen, moving it into the liquid part of the blood (plasma), cerebrospinal fluid, and lymphatic system, allowing oxygen to flow freely throughout the body and brain to restore health. Under pressure, inflammation is no longer a barrier to healing, and the body can restore its innate healing abilities. Oxygen is now able to travel throughout the body and brain in areas where it was previously unable to reach. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy helps widen arteries, create new routes for blood flow, and eliminate harmful chemicals from tissues. HBOT also helps to reduce inflammation, pain, neuropathy, heal wounds, regenerate tissue, and optimize brain function. This comprehensive approach empowers patients to take an active role in restoring and maintaining long-term wellness.
