Why We Stay
At first glance, I thought the Love Local theme felt almost too obvious for a community-centric publication. After all, highlighting the people and places that make Dripping Springs special is what we aim to do every month. But as I dug into the makings of this issue, I realized February’s theme might actually be the most perfect of the entire year.
What sets this issue apart is that “love local” hits deeper. It gets to the heart of why we all choose to live here—raising our families, building our businesses— and, more importantly, why we choose to stay.
This issue is a reflection of that love that keeps us rooted here. What struck me most while putting it together wasn’t the individual stories themselves but the thread that ties them all together: community.
It shows up in the local nonprofit doing work that reaches far beyond Dripping Springs, proving that a small town can make a big difference. It’s there in the way local entrepreneurs choose Dripping Springs as somewhere they feel supported, welcomed, and grounded. And it’s woven into the determination of our young athletes, whose dedication reminds us how much heart lives in this town.
All of these stories reflect the same spirit of people lifting each other up, cheering each other on, and putting good back into the world. That’s the real “love local” energy, and it’s what makes this issue so special.
As you read through, I hope you feel the heart behind every page and see the threads of connection, generosity, community, and—of course—love woven into each story.

MAZAMA COFFEE: A COMMUNITY CORNERSTONE WHERE LOCALS GATHER, CONNECT, AND RALLY FOR THEIR NEIGHBORS
ARTICLE BY WHITNIE STRAUSS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLAIRE MULKEY
I love a good coffee shop. The best ones are cozy, a little eclectic, and effortlessly hip, with a vibe that makes you want to linger just a bit longer. When I walk through the doors at Mazama Coffee Co, I’m immediately greeted by the smell of freshly ground coffee, followed by the familiar hum of friendly conversation. Whether you’re already two cups in or stopping by for your first sip of the day, the energy of the space wakes you right up. It’s warm and welcoming, yet buzzing with purpose. That combination is what pulls me in and keeps me seated long after my cup is empty.
When Lori Green took the keys to Mazama in 2022, she envisioned more than just running a coffee shop. Her goal was to create a gathering place. She was aiming for a community hub where people could pause, connect, and recharge. “We’re not trying to change the world,” Green explains. “We just want people to come in for a good cup of coffee, stay awhile, and find connection.”
And that’s exactly what’s happening. The lattes, pastries, and cold brews are undeniably good, but they’re just the beginning. It’s easy to strike up a conversation while waiting in line, share a table with a neighbor, or exchange a smile with a barista who already knows your order. From early-morning business meetings to afternoon pick-me-ups, Mazama has quietly woven itself into the daily rhythm of life in Dripping Springs.
And Green’s impact is stretching well beyond the cafe walls. Moved to take action, she recently spearheaded a donation drive to support victims of the Central Texas floods. Partnering with several other small businesses, she helped raise nearly $25,000, which goes directly to a Dripping Springs family who suffered unimaginable loss. “It was incredible to see what happens when people come together for a common cause,” Green says.
That spirit of generosity reflects the values she has built into Mazama and serves as a reminder that coffee may be the draw, but connection is the heart.

A COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER
When the Kerrville flood happened, we were trying to think of how we could help and how we could make more of an impact. My husband, Darren, thought of asking some local businesses to match donations up to $1,000. I reached out to a few people and the response was overwhelming—everyone said yes. And when word began to spread, more businesses quickly began contacting me, asking to help out.
At Mazama, we sold our Texas cookies to raise awareness and to raise funds. Our bakers were literally rolling out cookies, baking, and decorating for hours every day trying to keep up. I had no idea that it would take off the way it did, but we are so grateful for what we can accomplish when a community comes together!

SIMPLE WAYS TO PROTECT CHILDREN'S TEETH FOR YEARS TO COME
It’s late, and you have had a busy day filled with work, school dropoffs and pick-ups, dinner prep, and a soccer game. It’s finally time to relax, but wait! You still have to get those kids ready for bed. You wrestle them into their pajamas and think you are at the finish line when you realize, sadly, that you still need to brush and floss.
As a father of four daughters, ranging from kindergarten at Sycamore Springs Elementary up to Dripping Springs High School, I’ve been there. It’s hard. It’s exhausting. It’s like the movie Groundhog Day, where every time you finish and finally get a break, you wake up and have to do it all over again.
ARTICLE BY DANIEL JOHNSON, D.D.S. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ABIGAIL THOMSEN
As a pediatric dentist, I’ll try to share some tips on how to make caring for your little ones’ teeth as easy as possible, working toward getting them self-sufficient so you can get a break!
START EARLY TO SET GOOD HABITS
As soon as you see some teeth in that little mouth, get a toothbrush in there to start setting good habits. We want our little ones to know that a toothbrush isn’t scary. As your child grows and enters the toddler years, routines become a lifesaver. When you do something with regularity, your child will come to expect it. This is the time to teach that we brush our teeth morning and night. It may not be perfect, but consistency is more important than perfection.
TIMING IS KEY
Did you know that when you eat food, it takes your mouth about 20 minutes to clean itself and eliminate the acids that break down the enamel? Every time you take another bite, that timer resets. Even if kids aren’t eating foods that are bad for their teeth, constant snacking puts them at risk for cavities. It is better to get through the snack and have a longer break before the next one.
STICKY IS TRICKY
Watch out for sticky foods! Since each bite resets that 20-minute timer, something stuck in your teeth won’t even allow that timer to start until it is off your teeth. We know that treats like gummy bears and fruit snacks aren’t great for teeth, but watch out for things like dried mango or raisins as well. And that brings me to my next point: Drink more water! It speeds up the 20-minute cleansing process. In addition to being good for the teeth, water is good for your body.
FLOSS LIKE A BOSS, AND PICK YOUR BATTLES
In your little one, most cavities happen between the molars. If you are being honest and know you can’t get through flossing the whole mouth, the back teeth are where you should start. I want you to floss everywhere, but if you only get to some, head straight for the back.
GO TO THE DENTIST
The earlier you start this, the easier it is. When I have seen a child every six months since they were 1 or 2 years old, by the time they are 6, they love the dentist and know it is a safe place that can even be fun. While I hope there never is a cavity, if there is one, the earlier it’s caught the easier the fix will be. So the next time you are getting home from a never-ending day of crazy, don’t forget to get those teeth ready for bed. Hopefully you started early and set good habits so your kids know what is coming and they don’t put up much of a fight. Those teeth are worth it!
Homegrown Perspective: Bella Aldrete Joins DSCL Team
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ISABELLA ALDRETE
Since August, I’ve had the joy and honor of joining the Dripping Springs City Lifestyle team as its staff photographer and social media director. Being back in my hometown community after years away has been refreshing and inspiring.
I’ve grown up and lived in nearly every corner of the Austin area, from Round Rock to Westlake, Circle C to downtown. But the place I’ve called home the longest is Dripping Springs.
There was a time when, like any high schooler, I couldn’t wait to leave, dreaming of college adventures, new cities, and travels. But after attending the University of Arkansas, from which I graduated in May 2025, my perspective shifted. Absence made my heart grow fonder for the people and the place I come from.
Now, I see Dripping Springs in a new light. It’s in the people: their loud, happy, unique, and down-to-earth spirit. It’s in the landscape, too: the grand oaks that stay green almost year-round, the rolling hills, and the simple beauty of our Hill Country surroundings. Dripping Springs truly is a dream.
At DSCL, I’m fortunate to combine my passions for photography, storytelling, and social media. Capturing the life and energy of our local businesses, events, and people allows me to give back to the community that shaped me. I’ve even had the chance to reconnect with familiar faces from Dripping Springs High School, many of whom are now thriving in local businesses. Those connections remind me of the special blend of roots and growth that makes this town so unique.
Being part of DSCL is not just a job; it’s a way to celebrate home, heritage, and community. Each photo, each post, and each story is an opportunity to show readers what makes Dripping Springs so extraordinary. I’m thrilled to continue exploring and sharing the places, people, and moments that make this corner of Texas feel like home.
Dripping Springs shaped me, and being here has truly been a blessing. Now, through images, stories, and social connections, I get to help others see why it’s a place worth loving.
FOR THOSE WHO LOVE
Alongside her work capturing the Dripping Springs community for DSCL, Isabella Aldrete is an Austin-area wedding and portrait photographer who specializes in capturing those once-in-a-lifetime moments of love. Working in digital photography, she is available for travel wherever stories unfold.

Hog Heaven Shooting Instructors Share Their Love for Marksmanship and Mentorship
ARTICLE BY SHANNON SHEA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICHOLAS VEDROS AND SUMMER MILES
Neil Bangs
On a crisp Saturday morning, Rod Napier lines up his shot at the range. Better known as “RodZilla” at the Sporting Club, Napier will tell you he’s addicted to competitive pistol shooting.
The Kentucky native discovered practical pistol shooting in 2023 and hasn’t looked back. Through Hog Heaven’s Pistol PT program, he’s lost 80 pounds in a year while dramatically improving his shooting skills, and now he's training for an international competition in Puerto Rico this February.
One thing is certain: You can't miss him. He’s the one in the white cowboy hat, driving an orange doorless Jeep Gladiator, with reggae music drifting from his bay. “Hog Heaven is my happy place,” Napier says. “Whether I’m shooting pistols or clays, there’s a smile on my face.”
On the other side of the property, Neal Bangs, shotgun instructor known for his coolas-a-cucumber attitude and signature purple sunglasses, is working with a young shooter from the Hill Country Clay Shooters team. Bangs’ passion for clay shooting started in 4-H, competing in skeet and trap before falling in love with sporting clays. Since 2011, he’s discovered that teaching brings him just as much joy as competing. Now, as an instructor at Hog Heaven and volunteer coach, Bangs’ favorite moments are the “Aha!” breakthroughs when a student finally connects with a target they’d been struggling with and starts breaking it consistently.
And then there’s Madison Sharpe, a world champion shotgun competitor who also instructs at Hog Heaven. Sharpe’s journey started on her family’s farm, hunting ducks and deer with her dad. At a charity shoot, she hit her first clay target with a gun that was too big for her, and she instantly fell in love. That moment led her from local gun clubs to competitive podiums around the world.
Now she’s at Hog Heaven, building the same supportive community that shaped her own journey. Sharpe believes the best way to grow as a shooter is to surround yourself with others who share your passion, and as both competitor and mentor, she embodies that philosophy every day on the range.
We’re honored to have these individuals at Hog Heaven; we know that, without them, our community wouldn’t be the same.

Where Process Meets Purpose
JW Flooring’s Relationship-First Approach
ARTICLE BY MICAH WIENER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STACY BERG
In a trade where speed often eclipses substance, JW Flooring Solutions has built its reputation on something far more enduring: ownership-level accountability, disciplined process, and an unwavering commitment to doing what is right for the client—every single time.
Founded in 1995 and now stewarded by second-generation owners, JW Flooring honors the legacy of its founder, whose initials remain in the company’s name as a reminder of the standards the business was built upon. Today, those standards are preserved through systems that prioritize customer satisfaction, cost efficiency, and flawless execution.
From the very first consultation, JW Flooring clients work directly with company ownership. This distinction sets the experience apart. Every project is owner-led from start to finish, ensuring that decisions are thoughtful, communication is clear, and expectations are met without compromise.
“What sets us apart is the personal involvement we bring to every job,” says partner Nick Lange. “Our name and reputation depend on flawless execution. When clients work with us, they are working directly with owners who are personally accountable.”
That hands-on approach also delivers meaningful cost savings. Rather than defaulting to higher-priced materials, JW Flooring carefully evaluates each project through the lens of practicality, functionality, and real-world application.

Robby Ormand, Nick Lange
“A common misconception is that a higher price point automatically means a better product,” Lange explains. “In many cases, we’re guiding clients toward lower-cost options that perform better for their specific lifestyle or environment. Our responsibility is to weigh every factor and advise based on what truly serves the client, not what benefits us.”
“Ask questions,” advises partner Robby Ormand. “Flooring is one of the largest investments in a home, and homeowners should feel confident and comfortable with the people guiding that decision.”
Execution matters just as much as product selection. JW Flooring’s professional installation crews have worked with the company for upwards of 15 years. This level of tenure is a rarity in the industry and a major benefit to clients.
“Those long-standing relationships allow us to guarantee quality with confidence,” Lange adds. “We never put unproven craftsmen in the field. Our crews are vetted, trusted, and deeply connected to our process, which brings peace of mind to our customers that others simply can’t promise.”
Family is not just a value at JW Flooring; it is an essential part of daily operations.
“Our girls have grown up around the business,” says Ormand. “They’ve measured job sites with me during school breaks, learned invoicing and budgeting, and even contributed creative and marketing ideas. They see firsthand what it takes to build something responsibly.”
That family-first mindset extends beyond the owners’ households to the entire JW Flooring team.
“We take real pride in being involved in the lives of our employees and their families,” Ormand explains. “Creating opportunity, stability, and a supportive environment allows everyone to do their best work.”
For Ormand, the lessons modeled through the business are just as important as the results delivered.
“Our kids see us navigating different relationships, overcoming challenges, and leaning on one another’s strengths to reach common goals,” he says. “They see trust, openness, and commitment in action—both personally and professionally.”
Those principles define JW’s culture. The company is faith-focused and purpose-driven, guided by transparency, integrity, and availability.
“Our customers always work directly with owners,” Ormand notes. “This business represents our blood, sweat, and tears. Being present and accountable isn’t optional—it’s who we are.”
As local residents, Lange and Ormand chose Dripping Springs for its small-town character and strong sense of community. That closeness reinforces how they operate. JW Flooring does not advertise and grows entirely through referrals.
“Our customers always work directly with owners. This business represents our blood, sweat, and tears. Being present and accountable isn’t optional—it’s who we are.” - Robby Ormand
“When you live where you work, reputation matters,” Ormand says. “We want people to feel confident recommending us because they know we’ll treat others the same way we treated them.”
Community involvement is equally important, including their support of the Burke Center for Youth and other local initiatives.
While every successful project is rewarding, some experiences leave a lasting imprint.
“We were contacted by a member of our community who had fallen on hard times and needed to sell her home quickly,” Lange shares. “Her budget only allowed for minor repairs, so we redid all of her flooring at no cost to help her prepare the house for sale.”
The home sold quickly, and the impact endured. “Three years later, we still receive messages expressing her gratitude,” Ormand says. “It encapsulates what we strive for every day: elevating others, practicing gratitude, and using our skills to serve when it matters most.”
Outside of work, family time remains the priority. Horseback riding, church, parks, and golf are regular parts of life in and around Dripping Springs. Those shared moments reinforce the balance and perspective the partners bring back into their work.
At JW Flooring, craftsmanship is expected, but integrity, availability, and purpose truly define the experience. JWFlooringSolutions.com

Forever Country
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK REED AND JOCELYN MYERS Hill Country Roots and Sisterly Harmony Fuel the Music— and the Rise—of Dripping Springs’ The Cunningham Sisters
ARTICLE BY KACI BAEZ
For Texas Hill Country natives and emerging country music sensation The Cunningham Sisters, music is about more than just playing instruments and singing songs. It’s about community, work ethic, family, and love. Cami and Stormy Cunningham, who grew up in Dripping Springs and also compete in rodeos, have a deep passion for their roots.
Now with plans for an album and two singles released in 2025—“Red River” and "What If I,”—the multi-talented homegrown duo’s star is on the rise.
For The Cunningham Sisters, who started performing at 8 and 11 years old, successfully creating music and competing at rodeos relies on family, community, consistent hard work, and being true to yourself.
“The Hill Country shaped our values, our music, and our lifestyle. We couldn’t be more proud of where we came from, and we hope our music reflects that sense of home,” they explain.
The sisters share that growing up on a ranch in the Hill Country has developed both their sound and their work ethic. “The land itself—the rolling hills, wide-open skies, and quiet moments you only get out here—has a way of grounding you,” they say. “It teaches patience, grit, and appreciation for the simple things.”
Being raised in the Hill Country taught them that nothing worthwhile comes easy, whether it’s practicing music, competing in rodeos, or tending to the ranch. “The Hill Country didn’t just raise us; it built the foundation we stand on.”
Among the many places in Dripping Springs that have guided their journey, Hudson’s on Mercer— where Cami and Stormy took their first voice, guitar, and piano lessons—will always hold a special place in their hearts.
“The teachers and musicians there poured so much into us and helped shape the artists we’re becoming,” they share. “And beyond that, there’s nothing more inspiring than performing at local venues where the community has literally watched us grow up. Dripping Springs is full of people who cheer us on, encourage us, and make us feel at home every time we step on a stage. That sense of community reminds us exactly why we love doing what we do—and why this place will always be a part of our story.”
And while music came naturally to Stormy and Cami when they were young, their dad helped cultivate their love of the rodeo and horses. They've been competing at rodeos for as long as they can remember. “Music allows us to express emotion in a beautiful way, while rodeo teaches discipline, resilience, and grit. Both challenge you to be better, and both bring us joy,” they explain. “Rodeo teaches you to stay focused, keep improving, and never quit. We carry that same mindset into music. Whether we’re in the arena or on stage, both require preparation, confidence, and determination. Rodeo has made us mentally strong performers.”
Cami and Stormy, who “grew up performing on stage,” also credit their family’s relentless support and their own special bond as sisters for their rising success.
“Being sisters gives us a natural connection that shows up in both our sound and our stage presence,” they say. “Our harmonies are tight because we’ve been singing together for as long as we can remember—there’s an instinctive way we blend and anticipate each other that only comes from growing up side by side.”
CONTINUED >
But it’s not just the music. Learning to rope and ride together, practicing in the arena, and tackling challenges as a team taught them how to communicate, trust each other, and work in sync. “All of that carries over when we’re on stage,” they say. “We understand each other so well that performing together feels effortless and genuine, and we think that bond is a big part of what makes our music unique.”
For The Cunningham Sisters, growth has been driven by staying focused and never giving up: “Leaning into what you love means sticking with your passion even when it gets challenging or discouraging. It’s showing up when you don’t feel motivated and trusting that the hard work will eventually pay off.”
The sisters encourage others reaching for their goals to keep going, even in the face of challenges or when
progress feels slow: “Work hard, stay disciplined, and don’t quit on yourself.”
And with plans for new music, performances, and rodeo competitions in 2026, The Cunningham Sisters are just getting started. Be on the lookout for new songs, tours, and an album from the rising country stars in the near future. Stormy and Cami aim for their music to reach a wider audience while staying true to their Hill Country roots.
“We want to play bigger shows, release more music, and keep competing in rodeos,” they share. “Rodeo will always stay part of our identity and continue shaping our sound and our character. Our dream is to keep doing what we love while staying grounded in the lifestyle that raised us.”

UNCONVENTIONAL LIFE LESSONS THAT LED TO A CAREER IN PRIVATE INVESTIGATION
ARTICLE BY TUCKER WITT PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUMMER MILES
In October 1988, my father was featured on “America’s Most Wanted” and sought by the FBI for his sixth prison escape and a host of other crimes.
Just eight days after I was born in April 1989, he was arrested. He first faced justice in New Mexico, where even the governor took an interest in his case. From there, he was extradited to South Carolina to stand trial for crimes he did not commit. Ironically, it was a private investigator who proved he couldn’t be guilty of those offenses … because he was too busy committing crimes in Florida at the time.
That's how my PI practice works. I begin with the question: If I were the criminal, what would I do?
After South Carolina, he was sent back to Virginia, where he finally faced judgment for a 1986 federal credit union robbery in Newport News. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison. My earliest memory is visiting him there. He was strong then—strong enough to walk on his hands—and I remember watching him do it.
Providentially, the course of my life took a very different direction. I attended the United States Naval Academy, graduated in 2011, and was commissioned as a naval intelligence officer. Later, I served as a special agent with the FBI. Today, I am a private investigator (PI).
More importantly, I have walked the difficult path of leaving behind the sins of our forefathers and embracing the freedom found only in Christ—a journey that requires wrestling with forgiveness and encouraging others to do the same.
I don’t think my father directly inspired me to become a special agent or a PI. If anything, I’m not sure he would have approved of the FBI part. But he did, inadvertently, teach me how to think like a criminal.
When I was with the Bureau, I took a man-tracking course with our SWAT team. When you’re chasing someone through
the woods, you don’t always know exactly which way they went, but you can often tell which way they didn’t go. You look for the path. You ask yourself: If I were running, what would I do?
That’s still how my PI practice works today. I begin with the question: If I were the criminal, what would I do? It’s a skill that most people aren’t prepared to use because it requires stepping into a mindset that can feel unsettling.
Most people can't relate to criminals, but I grew up with a dad who told me the tips and tricks to outsmart people.
Every experience, every lesson, every scar—literal and metaphorical—shapes how I work. I treat my clients as more than clients.
My father was no saint, but I believe he is one today. He died in 2008, leaving behind a great deal of hurt and a number of fractured relationships. For much of my family, the aftermath was deeply traumatic.
Trauma is like a deep pit. We develop a sort of emotional Stockholm Syndrome: We want to climb out, but we’re terrified to make the attempt. Exhausted, afraid, or confused, the climb can feel impossible. But once you reach the top and draw breath again, you begin to notice other pits around you—some deeper, some darker—where others are still trapped. And you realize that your climb wasn’t just for you. Don’t waste the struggle; reach down and help someone else up.
People sometimes confuse staying together in the pit with loyalty. Shared trauma can bond people, but real loyalty isn’t in remaining stuck; it’s in rising and helping others rise too.
As a PI today, I bring all of this with me. Every experience, every lesson, every scar—literal and metaphorical—shapes how I work. I treat my clients as more than clients. Some of them are still in their own pits, and some of them are ready to climb out. I consider it a duty to help them rise.

Kaspar’s Kustoms Restores and Rebuilds Classic Cars, Reviving an Era of Elegance
ARTICLE BY ZAHIA TAWIL
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALEXANDRA DAVIS
Nestled along Fitzhugh Road, Kaspar’s Kustoms is a shop devoted to classic cars, “kustoms,” and hot rods. Owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Michael Casey and Zahia Tawil, Kaspar’s Kustoms is dedicated to preserving American automobile culture. While Casey and Tawil service and contribute to a wide range of builds, they understand that these vehicles ultimately become more than transportation—they are functional works of art.
Though their paths were intertwined long before the shop existed, it took years for Casey and Tawil to truly connect. The two attended the same Austin high school, barely exchanging words, yet remained loosely aware of each other for years before life brought them together again.
Casey grew up racing and building motorcycles and cars, an early passion that naturally led to a career as a mechanic. With nearly a decade of professional experience, he has worked on vehicles spanning nearly a century, from the 1920s to the 2020s.
Tawil’s journey took a different route. She earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biomedical engineering and spent time in the corporate world before ultimately choosing to follow her true passion: cars. That decision opened the door to her love of textiles, upholstery, and the creative side of customization, skills that now define the interiors coming out of Kaspar’s Kustoms.
After moving back to Texas, Tawil reconnected with Casey, and their friendship grew around a mutual love of cars. That connection eventually led to marriage and a shared dream of opening a shop together. When they relocated to Dripping Springs, the timing finally felt right.
Once they secured their space, the couple got straight to work building the business side by side. With Casey handling mechanical, electrical, and fabrication and Tawil focusing on interiors, their shop does almost everything, with the exception of paint.
Outside the shop, they’re often found at local car shows, engaging with fellow enthusiasts and the surrounding community. When they’re not there, they’re learning—constantly expanding their knowledge to help carry forward American customization culture. With a deep respect for the “old-school way,” Casey and Tawil value quality, attention to detail, and patience. Those principles guide their work each day as they strive to revive an era of elegance in everything they do.

AUSTIN ADVENTURES
As a native Austinite, I’ve always been extremely proud of my hometown. During my 10 years as a fourth-grade teacher, two of my greatest joys were teaching Texas history and taking my students on field trips to experience firsthand the amazing things Austin has to offer.
As my family grew and my time in the classroom came to an end, the next chapter began with Camp 512. Along with my teaching colleague, Blake, we curated a camp experience unlike any other.
Camp 512 is a completely mobile day camp in which each day has a different theme, such as music and art, parks and recreation, animal lovers, and Austin experts. Then, we go on field trips based on those themes!
We have had so much fun with the Camp 512 kids that their parents began asking us to create a camp for adults. Thus, Tour 512 was born.

Tour 512 is perfect for special occasions like bachelor/bachelorette parties, wedding weekends, birthday parties, staff retreats, family reunions, and holiday celebrations. Tour locations include Austin attractions, local events (concerts, festivals, F1), Hill Country wine tours, distillery and brewery tours, and more.
As a Dripping Springs business owner, there’s nothing more fulfilling than being able to introduce my friends and neighbors to Camp 512 and Tour 512 and share my love for Austin.

ACTS OF KINDNESS: FEATURING BIRTH
PHOTOGRAPHER
WHITNEY HUGHES
Some acts of kindness arrive loudly, demanding attention.
Others slip quietly into a room, take off their shoes, and stay.
Whitney Hughes is an amazingly talented birth and newborn photographer, but what she truly offers families is something deeper than images. She offers presence. Witness. Proof that even in life’s most vulnerable moments, someone saw the beauty and said, this mattered Hughes’ calling began with motherhood.
After three traditional hospital births, she chose a home birth for her fourth child. Removed from the sterile lights and clinical pace, birth revealed itself to her differently—less medicalized, more human. It was intimate, sacred, transformative.
“That day changed everything for me,” she says. “I knew I wanted to be part of women’s lives during this season.”
She also knew what she wasn’t meant to be: not a nurse, not a doctor, not a midwife or doula. She wanted to be present without carrying medical responsibility. She wished to witness— not manage—outcomes.
Photography became her way in.
When Hughes photographed her first birth, she didn’t even own a camera. She borrowed one from her sister. She didn’t know manual settings. She didn’t have a business plan. What she had was conviction. She started her photography business in May 2024, and after that first birth, she knew immediately: This was it.
Birth photography, however, comes at a cost.
Hughes lives on call. Her camera rides in the backseat during dinners and celebrations. Plans remain tentative. Labor doesn’t schedule itself, and saying yes to one family often means saying no elsewhere.
“It’s a gift,” she says. “But it’s also a sacrifice.” And still, she gives freely.
Hughes often offers her photography at no cost to families walking through illness, trauma, or profound hardship. Those images now hold something irreplaceable.
“Having a baby is already so much,” she says. “To be battling cancer at the same time, the least I could do was show up.”
Hughes’ generosity is rooted in gratitude. She and her husband once lived through a season of deep need due to a serious brain condition. Friends arrived. Prayers came from strangers. Support arrived without being asked.
“That season taught me to look up,” she shares. “We all have something to give if we’re willing to notice.”
In a world that rushes past pain, Hughes stays. She bears witness and preserves proof.
And she reminds us that sometimes, kindness doesn’t require fixing anything at all—only showing up.
WHITNEY HUGHES PHOTOGRAPHY
Whitney Hughes specializes in the raw, emotional moments of birth and newborn life. From active labor to newborn photo sessions and in-home family portraits, Hughes’ award-winning work captures those fleeting, unposed moments—from tiny fingers and toes to first yawns and snuggles—that families will cherish forever.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME
Dripping Springs High School Athletes Talk About the Joy of Golf, Tennis, Wrestling, Swimming, and Running
ARTICLE BY MELISSA SVOBODA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALEXANDRA AND CHASE DAVIS
DSHS Cross Country and Track
Waking before the sun and staying up long after the lights go out, Dripping Springs High School athletes build their lives around their sport. From the outside, the work looks painful—runners logging miles in the heat, wrestlers drained with exhaustion, tennis players endlessly repeating drills. But they press forward for one reason: the love of the game.
DSHS wrestling coach Joe Kirksey explains the thrill of his sport: “It is the ultimate contest. It requires all the things you might expect in a sport: strength, conditioning, technique, strategy, and mental toughness.”
For swimmer Laurel Hoskovec, it’s a quieter fulfillment: “Swimming is special because it’s just me and my thoughts.” Teammate Zach Collins adds that the solitude and “dark, early, cold mornings and extremely hard work” make swimming unique.
And that hard work feels good. Wrestler Lucy Clarno says that wrestling “forces you to grow through discomfort. I love that it tests you both physically and mentally.”
Across all sports, athletes talk about the same experience: the satisfaction of getting better. “I love swimming because there is really no limit,” says Laurel. “I can always push myself to go faster.”
For many athletes, that growth happens in the silent struggle when quitting feels easier than staying the course. “It’s not easy to wake up early and put in the miles … and keep going when every part of you wants to walk,” says cross country and track runner Callie Schumacher. “But being able to keep going and feel that sense of accomplishment at the end is worth it.”
Arjun Iyer, Wes Anderson, Olivia Eggleston
William Mangione
Of course, athletes love to win, and many point to the significance of personal bests, exhilarating competition, and big victories. But it's also the challenging times, not the triumphs, that reveal how much the sport matters. Madeleine Johnson remembers leaving a disappointing tennis tryout with pride instead of regret: “I knew I had left everything on the court. At that moment, I had never been happier to be playing tennis.”
Over time, such moments turn athletes into stronger, more resilient versions of themselves, no matter the sport. “Swimming can be a lonely sport because athletes spend so much time with their heads in the water, alone with their thoughts,” explains coach Mike Hoskovec. “It takes a certain type of mentality and internal motivation to thrive in that sort of grind.”
“It forces you to grow through discomfort. I love that it tests you both physically and mentally.” - Lucy Clarno
Runner Wes Anderson shares this view, noting that distance running rewards commitment: “This sport feels more special than anything else I do because it does not usually award talent as much as dedication and persistence.”
Kirksey echoes this idea, adding, “In wrestling, like many times in life, you get what you earn.”
Across the board, athletes consistently emphasize one truth: They love their team and their teammates, cherishing the bonds built through shared meals, long bus rides, and tough workouts.
Even in “individual” sports, athletes embrace the collective effort and pride of contributing to a team. Golfer Paige Rogers explains, “Golf is special because you can compete individually in tournaments while also contributing to an overall team win with your score.”

That camaraderie makes victories sweeter. “Winning alone is great, but winning as a team is much more special,” says wrestler Caleb Collins.
“I love congratulating my teammates when they cross the finish line,” adds runner Angel Gallardo.
And despite the score, these athletes love the game because they love the person they are becoming. Golfer William Mangione says, “What I love most about golf is the lessons it has taught me.”
Tennis player Olivia Eggleston agrees: “Every moment I have spent on the court has shaped me into the person I am today. It has taught me some of the most important lessons and principles that I will take with me throughout my life.”
“WINNING ALONE IS GREAT, BUT WINNING AS A TEAM IS MUCH MORE SPECIAL.” - CALEB COLLINS
Whether lining up a putt or settling into the steady rhythm of a swimming stroke, these athletes find freedom, purpose, and joy in their sport. And while wins and losses may fade, what endures is the work, the growth, the people beside them, and the love of the game.

JEWELRY THAT STEALS YOUR HEART
AT DRIPPING DIAMONDS, CHOOSING JEWELRY FEELS A LOT LIKE FALLING IN LOVE
ARTICLE BY MOLLY PHILLIPS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY
ISABELLA ALDRETE
Buying jewelry is a lot like falling in love. It rarely happens logically, and it almost never happens quietly. There’s a moment of magnetism—a pull you can’t quite explain—when a piece catches your eye and suddenly lives rent-free in your mind. You’re not shopping anymore; you’re daydreaming. You think about it while making coffee, while driving past familiar streets, while scrolling late at night. That’s not impulse. That’s connection.
Psychologists call this feeling limerence: the intoxicating state of longing, fixation, and emotional attachment. We usually reserve that word for people, but jewelry has a funny way of stirring the same response. A ring, a necklace, a pair of earrings can feel like a tether to the heart. It represents who we are, who we love, or who we are becoming. Once it has you, it has you.
CONTINUED >
I see this every day in my local jewelry store, Dripping Diamonds. Someone will come in “just to look” and then returns weeks later with the same sparkle in their eyes. They’ll say, “I can’t stop thinking about it,” almost apologetically. I smile … because that’s love. Jewelry doesn’t just mark milestones; it mirrors emotion. It carries memory, hope, and desire in a way few objects can. That’s why paying attention matters. When someone keeps sending you links, saving photos, or casually mentioning a piece they adore, they’re inviting you into their inner world. Buying that piece isn’t about price or karats—it’s about being seen. It says, “I noticed what pulls at your heart.”
Local love lives in these moments. Choosing jewelry from a place rooted in your community adds another layer of meaning. It becomes a shared story—crafted nearby, chosen intentionally, and given with care.
Love is thoughtful. Jewelry, at its best, is too. When you gift someone the piece they’re already in love with, you’re honoring their longing, their story, and the quiet magic of being known. That kind of love always shines brighter, lasts longer, and feels unmistakably true.

RESCUE ONE MORE HOSTS ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA TO UNLOCK FREEDOM FOR CHILDREN IN UGANDA
On a November evening at Villa at the Vineyards, over 250 guests gathered for an extraordinary cause: unlocking freedom for children half a world away.
Rescue One More, the Dripping Springs-based nonprofit combating child sexual violence in Uganda, hosted its fourth annual fundraising gala, and the results were nothing short of remarkable.
“Our goal is to raise funds to bring safety, justice, and healing to child survivors in Uganda while celebrating the incredible impact our community is making,” says Rescue One More CEO and co-founder Scott Lambie. “To say this year’s event was a success would be an understatement. With the help of our partners, volunteers, and the generosity of our community, we exceeded our expectations.”
Co-hosted by Dripping Springs City Lifestyle and sponsored by Ranches At, the evening showcased the best of Hill Country hospitality. Guests enjoyed cocktails from A Drink to Remember, authentic African entertainment, and dinner from Hays City Store, all while guests connected with neighbors who share a passion for protecting vulnerable children.
The heart of the evening came when Scott, along with co-founders Sarah and Vanessa Lambie, shared stories of lives transformed through the community’s support. Board member and survivor Lillian Butele Kelle delivered a powerful testimony of hope and restoration that left few eyes dry.
“Once again, we were completely blown away by the generosity of our friends and neighbors,” Scott says. “They gave enough to help us respond to 208 new cases of child abuse, trafficking, and exploitation.”
CONTINUED >
Since its founding in 2021, Rescue One More has responded to approximately 900 cases, providing rescued children with safe housing, legal advocacy, and comprehensive emotional and physical health support. The organization also runs prevention programs in a country where sexual violence against children remains widespread.
The Cunningham Sisters provided musical entertainment before All Hat No Cadillac closed out the night with dancing to favorite '90s country covers—a perfect Texas ending to an evening of global impact.

DRIPPING SPRINGS CITY LIFESTYLE’S GALA HIGHLIGHTS THE HEART OF DRIPPING SPRINGS, HONORING RESILIENCE AND EMBODYING THE SPIRIT OF “LOVE LOCAL”
BY ISABELLA ALDRETE
Will and Karen Rivera with Mallory Carpenter
In early December, members of the Dripping Springs community donned their holiday best and stepped onto the red carpet at Pecan Springs Ranch for Dripping Springs City Lifestyle’s fourth annual Love Thy Neighbor gala, an event focused on building community, showcasing local generosity, and caring for neighbors in need.
Above the Law Band rocked the ranch as guests enjoyed food and drinks donated by local favorites. Friends reunited, new connections formed, and the spirit of community was unmistakable.
Representatives from Foster Village, Dripping Springs Education Foundation, Sunrise Christian Schoolhouse, and Dripping Springs Community Library borrowed the microphone to share their missions and highlight the ways they pour into the community, bringing the Love Thy Neighbor model to life.
Marla Barnard-Grubb
The evening offered numerous ways to give back, with every raffle and auction item generously donated by local businesses and neighbors. Prizes included luxuries such as golf and clay shooting outings, photography packages, beauty treatments, sports memorabilia, and even a Ferrari for the day. Silent auction items ranged from dazzling jewelry to exclusive vacation packages and guitars autographed by Luke Combs.
But beneath the sparkle and celebration, the gala focused on supporting a local neighbor impacted by the heartbreaking Hill Country floods on July 4. A hush fell over the crowd when Marla Barnard-Grubb introduced the evening’s guest of honor, Mallory Carpenter, who lost her mother Pam, father Mike, husband Brian, and 3-yearold daughter Blake when the home they were staying in was swept away by floodwaters.
Barnard-Grubb, herself a beneficiary of the 2023 Love Thy Neighbor gala after the sudden loss of her husband, spoke with beautiful empathy and understanding.
“You are not alone. We see you. We stand with you,” Barnard-Grubb began, addressing Mallory. “The steps you’re taking forward won’t always feel light, but they can be lighter because we will not forget you or leave you to walk this road by yourself.”
“I’m so grateful for a community that doesn’t turn away from tragedy or from those carrying deep grief,” she said to the audience. “Instead, you lean in, you hold one another up, and you show what love looks like in real life.”
That night, this love translated into action, as the event raised more than $50,000 for Mallory and her son, Dalton.
“Love Thy Neighbor is about shining a light on local nonprofits and coming together as a community to support neighbors in need,” says DSCL publisher Will Rivera. “When tragedy strikes, this is how we show up for each other.”
Mallory then bravely took the stage, addressing more than 350 attendees. “We will always call this place our home,” she said. “We cherish the many memories shared in our community—a small town with a big heart that embodies what it truly means to love thy neighbor. Thank you … for reminding us that there is still good in this world.”
The moment left everyone in the room visibly moved. “I think with the Hill Country floods happening so recently and close to Dripping Springs, it felt very raw and emotional for everyone,” says DSCL co-publisher Karen Rivera. “Just to hear Mallory speak of her experience and perseverance … It was a very powerful and moving moment.”
As the evening came to a close, the focus shifted from loss to the strength of the Dripping Springs community itself. “Love Thy Neighbor reminds us why community matters,” says DSCL managing editor Whitnie Strauss. “This night showed that even after heartbreak, there is still connection, kindness, and so much good ahead.”

SHANNY’S SHOUTOUTS: SERVING UP SUPPORT
- by Shannon Holzwarth
Elementary school teachers don’t usually find themselves invited to galas, so seeing my name on the Love Thy Neighbor guest list was genuinely exciting. As a first-year rookie attendee, I had no idea what to expect, but I quickly learned this was so much more than a formal event. It was a moving, heartfelt experience that beautifully reflected the spirit of our community.
The room buzzed with generosity, joy, and purpose. Adding to the magic was an incredible lineup of local food partners who showed up in a big way, bringing unique and delicious offerings that all deserve a proper Shanny Shoutout!
Choosing just a few highlights was no easy task. Treaty Oak Distillery’s shrimp and grits drew a steady line all evening, and for good reason. Tim Laielli’s pasta with vodka sauce was nothing short of phenomenal (and yes, I immediately followed him at @ barefoodtim for a behind-the-scenes look at his kitchen magic). The charcuterie and sourdough boards by CarbQueen and Marissa Fisk Catering were so colorful and thoughtfully arranged that I briefly considered leaving them untouched. Briefly.
I also had the pleasure of meeting Basimma Hammonds, the wonderfully charismatic owner and founder of Go2Bites and its clean donut holes. With too many tempting flavors to choose from, I did the only reasonable thing and ordered every variety online the next morning. The “Oh Ghee Dates” bag, in particular, is well on its way to becoming a pantry staple, thanks to my husband’s enthusiastic approval.
Slice Street Pizza served up fresh pies, while Pig Pen BBQ delivered bold, flavorful tacos—both crowd pleasers as always. Fitzhugh Brewery and Turcotte Butchers arrived with skewers in hand, offering an irresistible mix of cheeses, meats, caprese, and grilled marinated chicken. I ended the evening on a sweet note with Churro Burro’s warm, crispy churros and rich chocolate dipping sauce.
The night came full circle, celebrating the patrons who support these beloved local businesses year-round, while raising funds for neighbors in need. It was a perfect evening and a true embodiment of the spirit behind Love Thy Neighbor.
We love being a part of the Dripping Springs community, and are thrilled to have a location in our hometown! We take a personal interest in every patient who walks through out doors, treating them with the same care and attention we would want for our own children.
Our smaller, community-focused approach enables us to get to know our patients and their families on a deeper level, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels a part of the family!

True Renewal Brings Intentional Care, Family Values, and Professionalism to Every Home and Business
ARTICLE BY CHRIS JENSEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY STACY BERG
My wife, Stephanie, and I spent years in demanding careers. I worked in tech sales leadership, and Stephanie was a labor and delivery nurse—jobs that taught us, day in and day out, the importance of long hours, discipline, and caring for others.
That experience inspired us to launch a family-owned cleaning business grounded in service, reliability, and intentional care, leaving every space spotless and every customer satisfied.
True Renewal is a professional deep-cleaning company serving both homes and businesses throughout the area, specializing in carpet, rug, and upholstery cleaning as well as tile, wood, LVP, and other hard-surface flooring. Every service is performed using familyand pet-safe cleaners, with careful attention to both the materials being cleaned and the people who live and work in those spaces.
Stephanie and I chose to build True Renewal in Dripping Springs because this is home. We are raising three daughters—ages 13, 4, and 6 months—alongside our Australian Shepherd, Tex. Like many families in Dripping Springs, our days are full, loud, and busy, and
we understand how much a well-cared-for home supports the rhythm of everyday life.
That understanding shapes everything about True Renewal.
One of the first things customers notice is our team’s responsiveness. We return calls quickly, answer questions clearly, and make sure customers never feel like they are chasing someone down or wondering what comes next. From the initial conversation to the final walkthrough, communication is consistent and dependable.
True Renewal is also known for efficiency without sacrificing quality. Its low-moisture process leaves most carpets and upholstery dry in about an hour, which makes a big difference for busy households and businesses that cannot afford long downtime. Our team focuses on doing the work thoroughly and delivering results that last, never rushing through jobs just to move on to the next appointment.
The business has grown quickly, largely through word of mouth. We believe this growth stems from simply showing up, working hard, and treating people well. Our favorite part of the job is a customer’s reaction when they see their space transformed. Clean floors, refreshed upholstery, and renewed surfaces often bring an immediate sense of relief and happiness, and those moments never lose their impact.
For us, faith and community play an important role in both our family and our business. We attend Real Life Church near our home and hold values that guide the way we show up for customers and neighbors alike. Honesty, accountability, and genuine care are not marketing statements but standards we work to meet every day.
Looking ahead, we plan to expand True Renewal into exterior services, including pressure and soft washing, with a long-term vision to become a true one-stop shop for surface cleaning. By caring for both the inside and outside of homes and businesses, we hope to continue supporting the Dripping Springs community we’re proud to serve.
True Renewal continues to grow, but its foundation remains unchanged: a family business built with intention, hard work, trust, and a deep respect for community—right here in the place we are grateful to call home.

Cupid's
Valentine IN A GLASS
ARTICLE BY DRINK TO REMEMBER PHOTOGRAPHY BY STACY BERG
Some cocktails are swanky, some are strong, and some—like Cupid’s Arrow—are just plain fun. What I love about this drink is how simple it is: a little gin, a little raspberry, a squeeze of lemon … shake it up and you’ve got a drink that looks far more impressive than the effort it required. It’s perfect for date night at home, but it’s just as good shared with friends or sipped while you’re cooking dinner and pretending you have it all together.
The homemade raspberry syrup may sound fancy, but it’s surprisingly easy—and it makes the drink. You just toss everything in a pot, let it do its thing, and strain. It gives the cocktail that gorgeous blush color and just the right touch of sweetness. Top it with club soda and a few raspberries, and you’ve got a cocktail that feels like a valentine from your bar cart.
Cupid’s Arrow fits perfectly into our Love Local issue because it celebrates small moments and the people who make them meaningful. Whether you’re toasting with your partner, clinking glasses with friends, or enjoying a quiet moment to yourself, this simple, pretty cocktail brings a little extra joy to the table.
DIRECTIONS:
1. Make the raspberry syrup:
• Bring the water to a boil, then reduce to medium-low
• Add sugar and raspberries, stirring until the sugar dissolves
• Simmer for 15 minutes to let the berries infuse
• Strain through a fine mesh sieve and let cool before using
2. Shake the gin, raspberry syrup, and lemon juice with ice and strain into a chilled coupe glass
3. Top with club soda and garnish with fresh raspberries
