The Heart of Giving

I grew up often hearing the adage, “It’s better to give than to receive.”  It took years of tearing through wrapping paper, caught up in the thrill of what awaited inside, before I realized how true that sentiment really is.

Don’t get me wrong; I still love a little surprise from time to time, but what really gets me these days is standing back and taking in the moment from the other side.

What I love most is giving quietly, even anonymously. There’s no expectation or fanfare. It’s giving in its purest form without expecting anything in return beyond the tender joy in knowing you’ve made an impact, however small.

This issue is full of that kind of impact and highlights giving in all its forms. You’ll see gifts of time, advice, and sanctuary, along with others wrapped in joy and spirit. From stories of courage and compassion to those of creativity and restoration, each feature in these pages reminds us that generosity takes many shapes, and all of them matter.

As 2025 winds down, I invite you to pause and reflect on the essence of giving and what it means to you. To me, giving isn’t measured by what you hand over, but by what you pour in. The thought. The sacrifice. The love behind it. Because when all those things align, we create moments that outlast any season.

Happy reading and happy holidays! May your days be filled with warmth, wonder, and the joy of giving.

Giving Families the Tools to Thrive

LEGAL GUIDANCE FOR FAMILY STABILITY, EMOTIONAL WELLNESS, AND FINANCIAL CLARITY

Blair Carroll knows the courtroom. But more importantly, he knows what’s at stake beyond it.

An experienced attorney, devoted husband, and proud father of three, Blair has seen firsthand how the legal system can either fracture families or help them flourish. Family law touches the most important parts of your life: your children, your relationships, and your finances. His own journey through family transitions and co-parenting shaped both his personal life and his professional mission: to empower families with the tools they need to thrive, not just survive.

Blair met his wife, Amber, in 2018. At the time, each brought a child from a previous relationship—Blair’s son, Luke, and Amber’s daughter, Gemma.

Those early years together meant navigating the emotional terrain of blended family life. In 2021, Blair and Amber married and later welcomed their daughter Lilly, completing a beautifully blended family built on love, mutual respect, and intentional planning.

But it wasn’t always easy.

“Going through the legal system as a parent gives you a whole new perspective,” Blair reflects. “You realize just how important it is to have someone in your corner who sees the big picture—not just the next court date.”

Too often, families in the middle of difficult changes feel overwhelmed, outnumbered, and unprepared. Family law proceedings can be legally, financially, and emotionally draining. And while the law is designed to be fair, it’s not always equipped to protect the emotional well-being of children or the future functioning of the family unit.

That’s where attorneys like Blair are changing the narrative.

He believes effective legal counsel isn’t just about reaching a settlement or winning a case; it’s about helping families move forward with clarity and confidence. It means creating parenting plans that work, setting up financial agreements that last, and making sure that children—no matter their family structure—feel supported and secure.

“Our job isn’t just legal,” he says. “It’s human. We’re dealing with people at their most vulnerable. If we do it right, we don’t just close cases—we open new chapters.”

Today, Blair and Amber’s family is living proof of what’s possible with the right guidance and a lot of heart. Their kids are thriving—supported by two households and a loving co-parenting structure.

A DEEPER LOOK AT CARROLL TROBERMAN LAW

Behind every successful family law case is a legal team that understands what’s really at stake, and at Carroll Troberman Law, that understanding runs deep.

Co-founded by Blair Carroll and Shelly Troberman, the Austin-based firm is built on decades of combined legal experience and a shared belief that clients deserve more than representation; they deserve advocacy rooted in empathy, strategy, and clarity.

Carroll Troberman Law approaches every family matter with strategic compassion, ensuring that each legal decision supports the client’s long-term well-being.

“We’re here to help people make smart decisions during the most difficult times of their lives,” says Blair.

The family law division of Carroll Troberman isn’t about “winning” at all costs. It’s about finding solutions that actually work, especially when children are involved. This means:

• Encouraging a cooperative resolution when possible

• Crafting custom parenting plans tailored to real-life needs

• Supporting open, transparent financial solutions

• Connecting families with mental health and counseling resources

• Prioritizing children’s emotional and psychological health

“Our job isn’t just legal. It’s human. We’re dealing with people at their most vulnerable. If we do it right, we don’t just close cases—we open new chapters.” - Blair Carroll
“Going through the legal system as a parent gives you a whole new perspective. You realize just how important it is to have someone in your corner who sees the big picture—not just the next court date.” - Blair Carroll

Blair brings a unique perspective to his practice, both as a parent who’s lived through the experience and as a seasoned attorney who’s handled thousands of cases throughout Texas. His ability to see beyond the courtroom—to the emotional and relational dynamics of each case—makes him a trusted ally for clients navigating the most personal of legal matters.

Shelly, equally respected in the legal community, brings a sharp legal mind and a deep understanding of both family law and CPS defense. Together, they’ve built a firm known for its integrity, results, and people-first approach.

A COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY

As proud Austinites, Blair and Shelly are deeply committed to serving the local community. Whether they’re guiding parents through parenting plans or supporting families through complex transitions, their mission remains clear: protect what matters most and give clients the tools to thrive long after the case is closed.

At Carroll Troberman Law, the work doesn’t end when the papers are signed—that’s when the real healing begins.

TEXAS IOWA RECLAIMED

ARTICLE BY MICAH WIENER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIMBER BROWN

In a world that prizes the new, Emilie Crockett has built a thriving business around what’s old. Very old.

As owner of Texas Iowa Reclaimed, a family-run mill and nationally recognized design studio, Crockett spends her days surrounded by wood that has outlived generations. Her materials—reclaimed boards, beams, and planks salvaged from 18thand 19th-century structures—once framed the barns and homes that built America. Now, under her care, those same boards find new life in contemporary spaces, bridging centuries through craftsmanship and design.

“I started out as a client,” Crockett laughs. “At the time, Texas Iowa Reclaimed had a showroom right down the road from my house. I became mesmerized by the product and its history.” When the company’s founder decided to retire, Crockett bought her share and stepped in to lead.

Reclaimed wood, Crockett explains, isn’t just a building material. It’s a record of American perseverance. “What makes reclaimed material so special is that it built our great nation,” she says. “It was forged by hands that could tell us countless stories of strife and triumph. We get the privilege to repurpose these materials in current and fresh ways that help make houses into homes.”

Texas Iowa Reclaimed specializes in high-quality reclaimed beams, flooring, and barn boards sourced from centuries-old structures. Each piece carries the marks of its past life—mortise pockets, peg holes, saw marks, and patina—that tell a story as tangible as its grain.

“All our materials—beams, boards, and floors—are harvested from the 1700s and 1800s,” she explains. “You know your parents’ refrigerator that wouldn’t die, and you say, ‘They don’t make them like that anymore’? My material is like that, but even older and stronger.”

GIVING NEW LIFE TO AMERICA’S OLDEST WOOD
“IF MY FLOORS COULD TALK, I KNOW I’D LEARN SO MUCH FROM THEM.”
- EMILIE CROCKETT

That sturdiness is more than nostalgia. Every board is kiln-dried, a slow heating process that removes moisture, stabilizes the product, and kills insects or fungi. “It means fewer surprises after installation,” Crockett says. “Less movement, more durability. It’s one of the ways we ensure our materials are as safe as they are beautiful.”

Despite the mystique of its name, Texas Iowa Reclaimed has a humble origin story. “Probably not as rad as you were hoping,” Crockett admits. “My business partner came from Iowa, and I’m from Texas.”

But what the name lacks in poetry, the company makes up for in principle. With more than 40 years of family experience in millwork, the business is built on old-fashioned craftsmanship and faith-based integrity. “My foremen are the best in the nation,” Crockett says. “We run our business the same as we lead our families: with integrity, hard work, and God at the helm.”

That family-first ethos extends to every aspect of the company, which remains family owned and nationally recognized for its ability to blend modern architecture with old-world materials.

“I like mixing aesthetics,” she says. “Reclaimed beams and floors with modern or unexpected lighting, rich stone counters, and your favorite artist adorning the walls. It’s about warmth and contrast— making something new without erasing its soul.”

Crockett’s team approaches each project as a collaboration. Clients can choose how much “character” to keep—whether to preserve every saw mark and shadow or smooth for a cleaner, modern look. “We can preserve as much of the wood’s history as you’d like,” she says. “That’s the beauty of working with something that already has a story. It’s flexible, but never generic.”

CONTINUED >

Each board, beam, and floorboard from Texas Iowa Reclaimed can be traced back to its origin, and Crockett’s team happily shares those details. “We can send you the story of your product—where we found it, what kind of barn, what the barn’s function was. We can even send you a photo of the barn,” she says. “People are proud to know their floors came from a hay barn in Pennsylvania or a tobacco barn in Kentucky. It turns a house into a conversation.”

Projects span from rustic lodges to sleek urban lofts, from Hill Country estates to coastal retreats. “My team has a hard time saying no,” Crockett says. “If you can dream it, we’ll try our best to achieve it.”

After years in the industry, Crockett’s passion hasn’t waned. “I have the best job ever—it’s easy to be passionate,” she says. “After installation, seeing the client’s face and hearing the excitement in their voice—it’s childlike and awesome.”

For her, every finished project is a resurrection. “What we do isn’t just about building floors or beams,” she says. “It’s about giving new life to something that’s already lived fully. We’re caretakers of history, not just makers of things.”

That sense of stewardship is perhaps the truest legacy of Texas Iowa Reclaimed. It’s a business that proves beauty and meaning can be found in what endures.

As Crockett puts it, “These materials have already stood the test of time. Our job is to make sure they keep telling their stories—just in a different home.”

“Picture your heart as a pocket. Fill your pocket with happiness, and then give it away.”
- Daryl Giles

Give It Away

His Handcrafted Gifts Carry a Simple Message: Kindness is for Sharing

Before I even stepped out of my truck, I could feel his energy: grounded, calm, and full of joy. There’s something unmistakable about Daryl Giles. He carries a quiet kind of happiness that feels warm, steady, and contagious— like sunlight.

Giles learned early on that happiness isn’t something that happens to us; it’s something we choose. A teacher once told him, “You can’t control everything that comes your way, but you can control how you carry it.” That single lesson shaped him for life. “A positive attitude can change everything,” Giles says.

Now, in the hills around Dripping Springs, Giles harvests the tall, pale stalks of the sotol cactus—strong but light as air. From each one, he handcrafts walking sticks, sanding them smooth and coaxing new life from what the land leaves behind. Each piece is unique, marked by nature and made with patience.

Giles carries a few of his handcrafted walking sticks wherever he goes, ready to give them to anyone who might cross his path. Many of those he meets are veterans; some are elderly who could use a little extra support. He never accepts payment, saying that giving is what fills his heart, and a price would only dull its shine. Each exchange leaves him with a smile and a renewed commitment to spreading love and kindness.

“Picture your heart as a pocket,” Giles says. “Fill your pocket with happiness, and then give it away.”

You can also find a small collection of these walking sticks at Desert Door in Driftwood. But the sale isn’t the point. Every dollar Giles earns goes right back into making more, so he can continue giving them away. His happiness lives in the giving.

Each stick he creates is a reminder that joy is light, strong, and meant to be shared. And each gift expresses the quiet truth of kindness: It’s not planned or measured, but lived.

HER story

HOW ONE GIRL FROM UGANDA IS CHANGING LIVES AROUND THE WORLD

Vanessa Lambie grew up in Uganda, a small, lush country in East Africa. As the eldest daughter of her mother—who was her father’s eighth wife—she was one of more than 40 children living on a sprawling family compound with her father and his wives, children, mother, and other relatives.

When Vanessa was 5, her mother left after years of abuse, and suddenly Vanessa was expected to care for her siblings and take on other adult responsibilities. “This was when my life started changing,” she says. She was sent from one relative to another; no one wanted to take care of her. Even worse, by the time she was 9, Vanessa had already been subjected to abuse that no child should face.

When she tried to speak up—to her grandmother, older siblings, women in the village, and her own father—she was silenced or punished. But “I was a very stubborn kid,” Vanessa recalls. “I was like, ‘I’m not shutting up.’”

Finally, a neighbor gave her 500 shillings and urged her to get in a taxi and find a police station. Ten-year-old Vanessa had never been away from home, but she took her backpack, climbed into an overcrowded van, and left. She rode until the driver reached his last stop and told her to get out.

Stranded and frightened in an unfamiliar place, she joined a group of children and ended up roaming the city and sleeping on the street with her new friends. Even in that uncertain situation, she says, “I was extremely happy that I was spending the night with these kids.”

So for weeks, maybe months, she slept in gutters and abandoned market stands. “As a child, you lose time,” she shares. But all the while, she kept looking for a police station.

One night, as she slept on a church pew, she had a dream that would, one day, set her story in motion. In this vision, she saw a plane, a family, and a book. The next morning, she stepped out of the church … and there, across the road, was the police station she had been searching for.

Inside, the police officers were stumped. “Girls never report such situations, so they had no idea what to do,” Vanessa explains. She was passed from one officer to another, repeating her painful account over and over, until a female officer finally listened and took action to gather evidence so they could make an arrest.

But with nowhere safe to go, Vanessa was placed in a jail cell for her protection. “I was happy for that because I had a place to sleep,” she shares. “I got food—prison food—but it was still good. I was so joyous. Finally, I had a place to stay.”

One day, while Vanessa sat on the floor of a child welfare office, an American couple walked in. They were Scott and Sarah Lambie, seeking to finalize their children’s adoption. Noticing the quiet girl in ragged clothes, Scott asked the probation officer, “What’s her story?”

When told that Vanessa had been living in a jail cell and had nowhere to go, Scott and Sarah immediately offered to take her home for a few nights.

Those few nights turned into months … and then years. Living with the Lambies and their five children, Vanessa experienced a world she had never imagined—learning English, eating new foods, watching television, and attending school. She excelled in academics, even scoring in the top tier on her national exams. Several years later, the Lambies adopted Vanessa and a new chapter began to unfold.

At age 16, she boarded an airplane headed to the United States and suddenly remembered her “crazy dream” of the plane, the family, and the book. She thought about the books she had studied and the big family taking her home on an airplane. “It all came

together,” she recalls. “That was the first moment of, ‘Okay God, you have something great for me.’”

Life in the U.S. was full of wonder and adjustment. “It was crazy,” she says. “What a fun time.” Although she carried painful memories, she was determined to bury them: “When I was in high school, I thought to myself, ‘I’m going to enjoy my life, and I’m going to live this American dream, and I’m not going to touch any of my past.’”

But the past had planted a purpose, and Vanessa felt a relentless tug, pulling her toward the girls living through the same abuse she had once endured. “I knew in my heart I was supposed to be helping,” she says."

So after graduating from Dripping Springs High School in 2020, she finally opened up to her dad about what she had been holding inside: “I want to share my story.”

The Lambies threw their support behind her, and within a year the people and pieces came together. Through community efforts and with God’s provision, Vanessa and her parents launched a nonprofit—Rescue One More—in 2021.

Rescue One More brings local leaders together to prevent and respond to sexual violence against children. The organization focuses on creating pathways to safety, justice, and healing while working to put an end to all forms of abuse. Vanessa’s story is at the heart of its mission.

The healing and change begin with its telling. Rescue One More visits schools, churches, and community gatherings to encourage open conversations and help children recognize abuse. “All of these people live in this community; they know what the problem is, but nobody likes to talk about it,” Vanessa says. “And when I showed up and started talking about it, they were shocked. It’s something that people just take to their graves.”

She believes that breaking the silence is the first step toward change. “The toughest thing to do is change a culture because there are all of these traditions and customs, and nobody wants to interrupt any of that,” Vanessa says.  “But we can start when we show someone who’s been through it and is not killed, is not ashamed, is not embarrassed, and is brave to talk about it. I’m hoping that the girls who go through the program can also find their courage.”

Rescue One More carries out its mission through Community Action Teams (CATs), composed of local police officers, probation and social welfare officers, social workers, prosecutors, and

healthcare providers who work together to prevent abuse and respond effectively to cases. The teams ensure survivors receive safe shelter, child-friendly police interviews, medical exams and treatment, emotional care, case management, and legal support.

What Rescue One More began in Vanessa’s community has now expanded to six CATs spread across three districts. The organization has trained dozens of Ugandan leaders to manage their own CATs and help launch new ones. “We hope to reach the whole of Uganda,” she says.

As Rescue One More has grown, so has Vanessa. She attended Calvary Chapel Bible College and now works full-time with troubled teenagers, where she forms bonds with young women from all walks of life. “It doesn’t matter where you come from; we’re all human and we all have experiences that can connect us,” she says.

She carries that message back to Africa: “I can say, ‘Hey girls, you’re not the only ones.’ For a survivor, sometimes that’s all they need to know—they are not alone.”

Having others to come alongside you is powerful. Vanessa credits the Kings Porch church community and her family for guiding her through the difficult healing process. “It was a hard road,” she confesses. “The healing journey was a messy one. I went through so much and they never gave up on me.”

Her family’s unwavering presence helped her find meaning in the life she fought to reclaim. “I survived something that is un-survivable, and I’m here, and there is a reason,” Vanessa shares. “I got an opportunity of a lifetime, and my only wish and my only goal in life is to give the opportunity to those people who are going through the same thing as me.”

That conviction anchors her: “I just know that I’m here on earth to do that. And that keeps me going. That’s what I can live for. That’s my purpose.”

She urges others to take part in that purpose, too. “It just takes a willing heart to make a difference,” she says. “You can encourage a kid all the way across the continents. We just need to do a little bit. It makes such a big difference.”

“It just takes a willing heart to make a difference. You can encourage a kid all the way across the continents. It makes such a big difference.”

Vanessa’s hopes for the future are as big as her heart: a CAT in every Ugandan district, an end to abuse across Africa, and a global movement to protect every child. “Really, all I want to do is Rescue One More. I want it to outlive me for generations and generations.”

And at just 25 years old, Vanessa has time to do all this and more. Along with Rescue One More, she has a few more goals, including writing a book, getting a healthcare degree, pursuing public speaking, getting married, and—someday—having children.

And that will be another story.

the drip effect

The Dripping Springs community has been key to Rescue One More’s success. Through fundraising galas and the support of local churches, organizations, and individuals, the collective effort has made a real impact. “The community makes it work,” Vanessa says. “Alone, you can do something, but together—it’s such a huge difference. I’m extremely grateful for that. I love Dripping Springs.”

Every year, Rescue One More takes teams—including children, teenagers, families, and elders—from Dripping Springs to Uganda. For Vanessa, sharing this life-changing experience with her neighbors is one of the most rewarding parts of her mission. “When I take people from here to Africa, their lives are never the same, and I love that.”

the impact

Since 2021, Rescue One More has made measurable change across Uganda:

• 833 children served

• 272 children rescued

• 548 suspects arrested

Maybe giving to yourself looks like starting your day with movement—not to burn calories, but to center yourself. Perhaps you could carve out five quiet minutes to journal, breathe, or simply pause for a moment of calm before you rush out the door. Sometimes it could mean taking a walk with a friend, catching up on more than your step count. Or it could be a workout that clears your mind and strengthens your spirit before heading to a family gathering.

Haven x Campise Farms Provides Loving Care and Dignity for Forgotten Horses

ARTICLE BY MICAH WIENER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SONYA SETH AND JACK THOMPSON

In the hills just outside Dripping Springs, a small herd of aging horses moves slowly through the pasture. Some navigate by sound, some by memory; a few can no longer see at all. But here, among the live oaks and limestone, blindness isn’t a burden. It’s simply part of life at Haven x Campise Farms, a nonprofit sanctuary offering end-of-life and special needs care to horses that would otherwise have nowhere to go.

“Many of our horses come from Texas kill pens, their last stop before crossing the border in Mexico,” says Kelli de la Torre, founder of the sanctuary. “This is the fate for thousands of horses in the U.S. every year. We exist to change that ending, one animal at a time.”

De la Torre grew up surrounded by land and livestock. Her family has been farming and ranching in Central Texas for more than a century, ever since her ancestors immigrated from Sicily. “As a third-generation lover of agriculture, I’m deeply grateful for the seeds of stewardship that were planted in me from childhood,” she says.

That heritage, mixed with a lifelong passion for animals and design, eventually gave rise to Haven x Campise Farms. The sanctuary now cares for a dozen horses—many blind, aging, or medically fragile—as well as a small collection of goats, dogs, and barn cats.

Haven’s approach is simple but radical: care without condition. “Every horse who arrives here is met with compassion and a promise: to rest, to heal, and to be loved for exactly who they are,” de la Torre says.

The idea for Haven grew out of personal tragedy. In 2014, de la Torre lost her husband to terminal cancer, and the grief left her searching for meaning and peace. “I found healing in nature, in quiet routines, and in caring for something outside myself,” she says. “That’s really what Haven is. A place that allows others, human or animal, just to breathe again.”

The sanctuary began when she intervened to rescue four blind horses from Bowie, Texas. “They were my first teachers,” she recalls. “They showed me what resilience looks like.”

Today, those horses and others like them live out their final chapters surrounded by the sounds of birds, the touch of gentle hands, and the slow rhythm of life on the land.

Unlike many rescues, Haven is not focused on adoption. It’s more hospice than stable. It’s a place where animals too often deemed “unadoptable” can exist in comfort. The horses’ days are filled with simple rituals: grooming, grazing, vet checks, and plenty of quiet companionship.

The sanctuary’s barn, designed and built by an all-women team, reflects the same thoughtful ethos. It includes sensory-accessible features for blind horses, such as a gravel-lined path that leads to an aerated fountain they can locate by sound and texture. “We wanted to create an environment where the horses could navigate safely and feel secure,” de la Torre explains.

One of Haven’s most meaningful initiatives is The Sterling Fund, named after a severely emaciated gelding rescued from the Bowie auction. Sterling arrived too weak to recover, but he spent his final days surrounded by care and comfort.

Through the fund, Haven provides medical treatment, palliative care and, when necessary, humane euthanasia, which de la Torre calls “a final act of love.”

Since moving to Dripping Springs, Haven x Campise Farms has found a strong community among locals. “We’ve met the most wonderful people who love our horses as we do and truly see the heart of our mission,” de la Torre says. “Dripping Springs definitely feels like our most aligned home.”

The sanctuary regularly hosts Open Barn Days, giving families, students, and neighbors a chance to meet the animals and learn about end-of-life care. “It’s a powerful experience,” de la Torre says. “People leave with a new sense of empathy and respect for aging and imperfection.”

GIVING BACK TO THE LAND

Haven isn’t only about animals. It’s also about the soil beneath their hooves. The sanctuary integrates regenerative and biodynamic farming practices, allowing horses to rotate through pastures and naturally fertilize the land. “Our horses are partners in land restoration,” says de la Torre. “They heal the earth while the earth helps heal them.”

“This place isn’t about saving every horse. It’s about rewriting the ending for one soul at a time.” - Kelli de la Torre

Volunteers also play a big role in daily operations—feeding, grooming, cleaning stalls, or simply spending time with the animals. “Every pair of hands matters,” she says.

Haven continues to grow. Plans are underway for The Loft x Haven, a guest experience opening in 2026 that will allow visitors to stay on the property, participate in daily chores, and learn about holistic animal care and land stewardship.

“We want people to see what compassion looks like in practice,” she says. “It’s not glamorous work, but it’s meaningful.”

Haven is sustained entirely by donations and sponsorships. Supporters can sponsor a horse for $30 a month through the Sponsor a Soul program, which helps cover feed, vet care, and daily supplies. Donors receive updates and photos, watching as the horses age and heal in peace.

“Everything we do here—every bale of hay, every vet visit—is made possible by generosity,” de la Torre says. “We’re a small operation, but the love behind it is big.”

MAKING SPIRITS BRIGHT

A Mother’s Vision Sparks a Community Movement: Bringing Christmas Joy to Every Child

Gina Christopher has always loved Christmas. The decorations, the anticipation, and the magic of watching her three children’s faces light up on Christmas morning make it her favorite time of year.

“We’ve never had to turn a child away. God has been in the details.” - Gina Christopher

But in October 2021, Christopher found herself thinking about a different kind of Christmas morning. She couldn’t shake the image of children waking up to empty spaces under the tree, their parents struggling silently while neighbors celebrated abundantly just down the street.

“I got to thinking about kids who don’t get to experience the magic of Christmas,” Christopher recalls. So, she reached out to see if anyone wanted to help.

That simple question sparked something extraordinary.

Christopher created a Facebook group called Dripping Springs Cares to connect families in need with families eager to help. What started as a grassroots effort to ensure local children received Christmas gifts has grown into a thriving community network that has brought joy to hundreds of children over the past four years.

“People would message me through my Facebook group with stories about families they knew of with kids who needed gifts,” Christopher explains. “Usually, friends or family members reach out about someone struggling who can’t afford Christmas.”

The process is beautifully simple. When a child is submitted as a candidate, Christopher posts the need to the Facebook group and asks for a sponsor.

Sponsors receive a wish list created by the child’s parent or caregiver and typically purchase five to six gifts, averaging $100 to $150 per child.

“We’ve never had to turn a child away,” Christopher says with evident gratitude. “Dripping Springs Cares has grown organically. God has been in the details.”

In 2024, 83 children were matched with sponsors—a testament to both the need within the community and the generosity of Dripping Springs residents.

Over the years, the program has supported single mothers facing unexpected hardships, families navigating job loss, and grandparents raising grandchildren on fixed incomes. But what makes Dripping Springs Cares truly special isn’t just the gifts exchanged; it’s the relationships formed and the ripple effects of compassion.

“It’s beautiful to see families step up to support them,” Christopher notes. “Bonds are created between sponsor families and the families they help.”

Those bonds sometimes extend beyond wrapped presents.

One year, a sponsor noticed that the grandmother of the children she was helping had dangerously worn tires. Without hesitation, she followed the grandmother to a tire store and bought her a full set of new tires.

Another sponsor learned that the high school girl she was supporting needed a laptop for school and donated her own computer.

Then there was the single father of two preschoolers who didn’t have a Christmas tree. Sponsors provided not just gifts, but a tree, ornaments, and decorations to transform his house into a Christmas wonderland.

Casey Ball, a Dripping Springs resident, has partnered with two friends to sponsor a family for three consecutive years.

“I was looking for ways to give back during the holiday season,” Ball recalls. “The moment I saw Christopher’s post, I thought, ‘Oh, this absolutely has to happen.’ I just don’t want anyone to wake up Christmas morning not experiencing that joy.”

The first year Ball’s group delivered their carefully wrapped gifts, the gratitude was palpable.

“The mom was so grateful to have gifts her kids would really love. We put a lot of thought and intention into it,” Ball says. “It just heightens the feelings of the holiday and what it’s all about: giving, not getting.”

“The mom was so grateful to have gifts her kids would really love. It just heightens the feelings of the holiday and what it’s all about: giving, not getting.” - Casey Ball

The flexibility of the program makes it accessible to everyone. Sponsors can choose to help one child, an entire family, or team up with others to share the cost.

For Christopher, the inspiration runs deep.

“Part of being a Christian means taking care of the vulnerable,” she explains. “We don’t realize that there are pockets of Dripping Springs with families in need.”

Her faith and her love of Christmas fuel her commitment to making the season wondrous for as many children as possible.

the top every year. I love to decorate and make my kids’ dreams come true. It’s great to be able to make that happen for less fortunate kids, too.”

As Dripping Springs continues to grow, so does the need—and thankfully, so does the community’s willingness to respond.

What began as one mother’s compassionate impulse has become a beautiful reminder that the true magic of Christmas isn’t found in what’s under our own trees, but in what we choose to share with others.

Experience Germany’s Timeless Christmas Traditions

Sipping glühwein while shopping in a charming wooden winter village is the quintessential European Christmas experience. Germany has some of the world’s oldest Christmas markets, and the holiday spirit continues to shine year after year.

Germany is very proud of its Christmas traditions; even today, some families still light real candles on the Christmas tree, honoring a tradition passed down for generations. These festive holiday customs can be felt all over Germany in December.

HAMBURG

During the Christmas season, Hamburg sparkles with glittering Christmas markets and festively decorated trees. Located in northern Germany along the Elbe River, Hamburg is Europe’s third-busiest port and the largest in the country.

This vibrant, modern city offers worldclass museums, restaurants, and luxury shopping. A stroll around the Alster is a delight, especially in December. Hamburg boasts 30 individual markets, with the largest in front of the Hamburg Rathaus. Visitors delight in the themed fairytale ships, which range from boats on which children can bake their own Christmas biscuits to cozy café ships offering delicious treats.

Beyond the markets, there is also the famed Elbphilharmonie concert hall, the Miniatur Wonderland (world’s largest miniature train

museum), and historic St. Michael’s Church. Take time to explore the many canals and partake in Hamburg’s café culture. For accommodations, the Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten is perfectly situated in town along the Alster.

MUNICH

Bavaria is a place many Americans dream of visiting. With its storybook castles, lively beer gardens, and stunning landscape, it is a beautiful wintertime escape. Munich, the capital of Bavaria and located in southern Germany, is known for its rich history, beautiful architecture and castles, and the Bavarian Alps.

Christmas markets are aglow all over Munich, inviting you to browse handmade ornaments while sipping a beverage from a festive stein and enjoying a classic German pretzel. Christmas in the city also showcases Germany’s largest Nativity scene and charming Hansel and Gretel puppet shows.

Christmas in Hamburg from Alster Lake

The iconic Neuschwanstein Castle is another must-see in the Munich region, along with the BMW Museum; Olympiapark, which hosted the 1972 summer Olympics; and Marienplatz, the central square in old town Munich. For luxurious stays, consider the Rosewood Munich, The Charles Hotel (Rocco Forte), and the Mandarin Oriental Munich.

HEIDELBERG

If you are looking for small-town charm, Heidelberg is your spot. Located about an hour from the international airport of Frankfurt, Heidelberg is nestled along the Neckar River in southwestern Germany.

This historic, picturesque town features one of Europe’s longest pedestrian streets lined with restaurants, cafés, boutiques, and German bakeries.

Storefronts are dazzling with the finest holiday decorations, making an evening stroll an absolute delight. The atmosphere is romantic and dreamy.

Set within Munich’s historic district, the Christmas markets include an ice skating rink, a winter forest lined with 100 trees, and a whimsical children’s train. Take in the warmth of the season while you sip hot cocoa and enjoy delicately decorated gingerbread cookies.

The main town is easily explored on foot, with Heidelberg Castle and the Karl Theodor Bridge as its main attractions. Stay at the Hotel Europäischer Hof Heidelberg or the Heidelberg Suites, House of Hütter for an elegant and cozy experience.

Whether you’re planning a winter getaway in Europe or simply dreaming of a white Christmas, experiencing Germany’s holiday traditions is truly magical.

Here Comes Santa Claus

BROWN
Dripping Springs Couple Gives the Gift of Christmas Magic

Each year, when the air cools and Christmas lights begin to twinkle, Santa Claus must make an important decision: appointing his most trusted neighborhood representatives to be his special helpers.

For the past four years, the honor has fallen to Roger and Kathy Balettie, who turn their Belterra home into an enchanted winter wonderland and cheerfully step into the roles of Santa and his elf.

“Santa is a presence that captures the spirit of Christmas.”

What began as a simple gesture—Roger and Kathy dressing up for their own grandchildren to capture that Christmas magic—has become an annual tradition of welcoming the whole neighborhood to share the joy.

For one special day each December, the couple invites Dripping Springs to join them in their front yard for a festive (and free) celebration. Visitors are greeted by Santa’s elves and treated to candy canes, hot cocoa, and a warm, one-on-one experience with Santa himself. Kids of all ages—even pets—can snap their own pictures with the big guy without the stress of long lines or pricey photo packages. The Baletties encourage their guests to take their time, enjoy the moment, and connect with friends and neighbors. And even on a balmy winter day in Texas, there’s a good chance of snow!

For Roger and Kathy, the experience is all about the magic. When he dons the red suit, Roger feels that he becomes jolly old Saint Nick himself. “I think I’ve got a little touch of that magic when I put the suit on,” he says.

And wearing the Santa suit is a responsibility Roger doesn’t take lightly. “It’s not just a costume; it’s a legend,” he explains. “You are entrusted to be Santa Claus.”

“Santa really can be magic,” he continues. “Santa is a presence that captures the spirit of Christmas.”

Giving others this precious gift of wonder is the reason Kathy and Roger put their hearts into the occasion year after year. “The whole purpose of the season is giving. Being able to give memories is really what we’re doing,” Roger explains. “I tell the parents, ‘The photos are for you; the experience and memories are for the kids.’”

“It’s about seeing the reflection of the magic in their kids’ eyes. It’s about making sure that sense of wonder lives on.”

The truth is, many parents are just as excited as their children, eager to pass on the kind of enchanting experience they remember from their own childhoods. “It’s about seeing the reflection of the magic in their kids’ eyes,” Roger shares. “It’s about making sure that sense of wonder lives on.”

He says it’s especially moving to watch parents during those moments: “They’re seeing their child have this magical experience that, honestly, you don’t get a lot of anymore.”

And while the Baletties are making spirits bright by creating treasured

holiday memories, they emphasize that the event gives something back to them as well. “I think we receive as much as we give,” says Roger.

He describes the joy of sharing in the children’s delight: “Sometimes they see me and they’re all excited, but it’s just as magical when they’re hesitant or shy. For us to be a part of that is really special.”

Kathy feels it too. Whether she’s handing out candy canes or encouraging a timid child, she feels blessed to help create merry moments for

everyone who visits. “We love little kids, and I love giving out cocoa and little gifts,” she says. “I have so much fun just bringing the magic.”

At this most wonderful time of the year, grab the family and swing by for a cup of cheer with neighbors and friends. It’s the perfect way to start a holly jolly tradition and make some unforgettable memories. Santa Claus is coming to town on Saturday, December 20, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 210 Harris Drive in Belterra. Don’t miss the magic!

BRINGING THE “AUSTIN BUZZ” TO DRIPPING SPRINGS

Shanny’s Shoutouts: Vespa Rossa

ARTICLE BY SHANNON HOLZWARTH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STACY BERG
The brisket, chicken, and house-made sausage are all slow-smoked out back with true Hill Country love.

Every town needs that one spot where good food and good company come together effortlessly. For Dripping Springs, that place just might be Vespa Rossa. Italian for “Red Wasp,” Vespa Rossa is the latest creation from Daniel Brooks and Ryan Sampson, the duo behind Austin favorite Vespaio (which fittingly means “the buzz”). The name connection isn’t just clever; it’s a nod to their signature mix of energy, quality, and charm.

I found the perfect spot on Vespa Rossa’s beautiful patio—a lively backyard shaded by six massive oak trees strung with twinkling lights. Two sets of cornhole, a kids’ playscape, and five giant fans add to the relaxed, welcoming vibe. Manager Holly Gordon was exceptionally kind, happily walking me through some of the menu’s biggest hits.

Choosing what to order was no easy feat. I started with a glass of J. Hofstatter Meczan Pinot Nero and Vespa Rossa’s suppli balls: crispy arancini that are a Vespaio original and a must-try here, too. I went with the cheese version, made with creamy risotto and Locatelli Pecorino and stuffed with fontina, fried to golden perfection, and finished with the house-made vodka tomato sauce. (Technically, this was a “shareable” but, let’s be honest, there was zero sharing happening.)

For a Texas twist, the Dripping Springs location also serves up a smoked brisket suppli—a playful homage to local flavor. In fact, several dishes showcase Vespa Rossa’s in-house smoked meats: The brisket ravioli, brisket pizza, smoked chicken, and housemade sausage are all slow-smoked out back with true Hill Country love.

For my entrée, I couldn’t resist the rigatoni and meatballs. My Italian mother used to make rigatoni for us growing up, and I’ve

spent years trying to find noodles that measure up to hers. Vespa Rossa’s homemade pasta ended that search with my first bite. All of the restaurant’s pasta is made fresh daily at Vespaio and delivered to Dripping Springs each morning.

Sourcing is a point of pride here. Vespa Rossa brings in whole animals—ensuring they’re raised peacefully and humanely— and partners with local purveyors like Peeler Ranch for Wagyu beef and Loncito Cartwright’s Peaceful Pork. I could taste that care in the perfectly spiced pork meatballs, served with a fiery arrabbiata sauce worthy of my mom’s Sunday table. Every sauce, I later learned, is made in-house by executive chef and co-owner Sampson.

As I savored my meal, the woman at the next table confessed she’d “been craving pasta and meatballs all week.” I told her she was in for a treat, and that Vespa Rossa might have the meatball cure for any kind of day.

Despite being thoroughly stuffed, I couldn’t leave without dessert. After much debate between the vanilla panna cotta with pears, the banana tiramisu, and the seasonal pumpkin roll, the last option proved the most tempting. Holy pumpkin! Filled with cream cheese and fresh whipped cream and topped with roasted pumpkin seeds, it was pure autumn joy. I tried to save a bite to enjoy with my coffee the next morning … but I failed miserably.

I left with a full heart, a happy belly, and gratitude that Brooks and Sampson have brought some of that “Austin buzz” to Dripping Springs. My next visit is already on the calendar, and yes, I think I know what I’m ordering next. Mangiamo!

Resurrecting The Mae House

GIVING HISTORY A HOME IN DRIPPING SPRINGS

In the heart of the Fitzhugh Historical District stands a 1940s home that has been creatively reimagined without losing sight of its past. Once an unassuming residence, this charming structure has been reborn as The Mae House, a space that honors history while ushering in a new era of beauty and self-care.

Named after owner Courtney Deavers’ daughter, Charlie Mae, The Mae House stands as both a tribute to heritage and a testament to transformation. Behind its preserved 1940s exterior lies a completely transformed interior that is now home to boutique med spa Face Alchemy, where elevated facial treatments, therapeutic facial massage, and advanced injectable services are artfully provided by aesthetic nurse practitioner Courtney and licensed esthetician Beth Ruwe.

ARTICLE BY COURTNEY DEAVERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLAIRE MULKEY

Every corner of The Mae House tells a story shaped by history as well as the heart and hands that restored it.

Sharing the space is Capri, a permanent makeup artist whose refined approach to enhancement complements the med spa’s philosophy of natural beauty and confidence. Together, they embody the modern woman’s definition of self-care: effortless, intentional, and timeless.

Stepping inside The Mae House is like walking into a conversation between eras. The real wood floors creak ever so slightly underfoot, grounding visitors in authenticity, while the moody palette and deep tones contrast with soft, delicate feminine accents, creating a sense of quiet luxury. It’s an interior that feels simultaneously old and new, sultry and serene, where history meets high design.

Every corner of The Mae House tells a story shaped by history as well as the heart and hands that restored it. Courtney and Jake Deavers poured countless hours of hard work into the renovation. Perhaps the most meaningful details are the interior doors, salvaged from a 1940s schoolhouse in the small town of Walburg, just north of Georgetown. These doors stand as living links between past and present, a testament to the craftsmanship and care that define The Mae House.

There’s a palpable sense of nostalgia within these walls, balanced by a fresh vitality that only thoughtful design can achieve. The Mae House feels like the embodiment of Dripping Springs itself, rooted in history yet constantly evolving.

For Courtney, this transformation was never just about renovation; it was about resurrection. She wanted to give this house new life, but she also wanted it to feel like it never lost its essence. And that’s exactly what The Mae House has become: a place where structural and personal beauty are both sweetly restored.

To celebrate the rebirth of this historic gem, The Mae House invites guests to experience the art of rejuvenation firsthand. From now until the end of the year, enjoy 10 percent off any gift card purchase when you enter the code GIVING10 at checkout online.

In a house like this, where old meets new and beauty is both remembered and renewed, every visit feels like a small act of preservation.

Cheers to all this holiday season. And cheers to the pursuit of aesthetic excellence.

the gift of the outdoors: hog heaven

There are people in your life who come alive in the outdoors. They would rather spend a Saturday perfecting their shot than sleeping in. They feel that time on the water or in the field isn’t just for recreation; it’s who they are.

For them, there’s Hog Heaven Sporting Club.

Spread across more than 120 beautiful acres of Texas Hill Country and ideally situated just minutes from Austin, Hog Heaven Sporting Club is the result of outdoor professionals building something for people like themselves. Here, you’ll find an array of outdoor activities including sporting clays, pistol shooting, archery, and a fully stocked lake. The Sporting Club offers the kind of variety that keeps you coming back.

What sets us apart is simple: proximity. You’re not sacrificing half your weekend just getting here. We’re close enough that visiting can become part of your daily life—midweek sessions, morning outings with your kid, or those afternoons when you just need to breathe.

A membership here isn’t just about the outdoors, though; it’s also about community. At our members-only dinners, you’ll spend time with people who speak your language. On the shotgun course, you’ll gather around a shared passion. The facilities here are built right because they were built by people who use them. The friendships are real because they’re rooted in something that matters.

For someone who feels the outdoors in their bones, this is more than a hobby. It’s home. If this sounds like you or someone you love, we invite you to stop by and take a look for yourself. We’re right down the road.

DECK THE HALLS

TABLES THAT FEEL LIKE HOME: TWO STYLES, ONE INTENTION

As a designer, I’m often asked how to make a table feel festive without going overboard or,  worse, becoming cliché. My answer is always the same: Create a feeling, not a theme. A well-styled table should tell a quiet story about the moment you want to create, whether it’s an intimate dinner or a cheerful holiday brunch.  I love approaching tablescapes as mood boards, one being more grounded and sophisticated, the other playful and full of light. Both can feel equally elevated when they’re done with intention.

Experts Give Tips for Styling Festive tables, Cozy Bedrooms, and Welcoming Living Rooms
This Holiday Season

THE CALM TABLE: EFFORTLESS WARMTH

This look begins with texture. When the table itself has natural beauty, let it show. Skip the tablecloth and use the wood as your foundation, as this instantly adds warmth and authenticity. Down the center, weave a soft garland of greenery; let it fall where it wants. The goal is undone but intentional. Add taper candles in mixed holders using brass, matte black, or glass to create rhythm and glow without clutter.  Keep the palette quiet: warm neutrals, soft whites, and a touch of green. Place settings should feel balanced but not overly coordinated. Think linen napkins folded casually and dark placemats to ground lighter plates. A sprig of rosemary or a handwritten name tag is all the “decor” you need. The end result is a setting that invites slow conversation and calm energy—a table that feels as relaxed as it looks refined.

THE MERRY TABLE: PLAYFUL ELEGANCE

Then there’s the opposite approach—the one that embraces color, whimsy, and a touch of nostalgia. This style works beautifully for a Christmas brunch or any occasion where joy takes center stage.

Think layers of color and patterns, like candy-cane napkins and scalloped plates trimmed with gold. The combination feels fresh yet festive, without leaning too literal.

I like to tie velvet ribbons around coupe glasses; it’s a small detail that adds charm and texture. Fresh greenery and white berry sprigs can bring balance, softening the bold tones. The key is contrast: mixing playful elements with classic shapes so it still feels elevated.

Whether you lean toward calm or merry, the principle is the same: Design for connection, not perfection. A table is less about impressing and more about inviting. When every detail feels intentional but lived-in, your guests won’t just notice the design; they’ll feel it. And that’s what turns a gathering into something memorable.

CREATING A WARM AND JOYFUL LIVING ROOM FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Decorating for the holiday season is all about creating warmth and joy throughout your home, making your everyday spaces cozy, beautiful, and filled with festive charm.

The key to accomplishing this look is to add thoughtful details that elevate your existing decor, focusing on creating an inviting space that makes everyone feel welcome and full of holiday spirit.

A well-styled holiday space creates a feeling of comfort, with touchable layers and natural elements that invite you to touch and linger. Soft lighting, like warm-toned lamps and candles, fill the room with a gentle glow, enhancing the feeling of coziness.

Incorporating greenery and wood accents adds a natural element that makes the space feel both beautiful and heartwarming. The mantle, often the centerpiece of a living room, can be styled for the holidays by layering textures and holiday accents. Greenery and metallic decor creates a balanced and inviting display, while soft stockings add charm.

Tables are a wonderful way to set the tone for festive elegance. Simply add seasonal items to your existing decor, grouping candles, figurines, and small potted evergreens or blooms together to create a cohesive focal point. Adding bells and glittery ornaments offer a touch of spirit for your display.

Textiles like pillows and blankets play a vital role in creating a warm holiday ambiance. Swap out everyday pillows with plush velvet or embroidered covers in rich jewel tones like deep reds, greens, or metallics to instantly elevate the room. Layering cozy throws enhances comfort and adds a luxurious, relaxing feel.

Ultimately, holiday design is about creating a balance between seasonal accents with your existing decor, filling the room with warmth, gentle sparkle, and natural beauty. With a focus on soft textures, festive details, and warm lighting, your home will feel effortlessly stylish and welcoming this holiday season.

HOLIDAY STYLE FOR YOUR BEDROOMS

The holiday season is a time to transform bedrooms and guest rooms into cozy retreats. Since we spend so much time in our bedrooms resting, relaxing, and rejuvenating, during the holidays it’s important to create a joyful space that makes the retreat extra special for you and your guests.

Start with simple updates that instantly add warmth and luxury. Swap everyday bedding for plush pillows in rich holiday hues to create a luxurious look and feel. Layering different textures adds warmth and visual interest, turning the space into a comfortable holiday sanctuary. Including a few extra soft, inviting blankets for your guests will help them feel right at home.

Adding tasteful holiday accents can make a big impact without overwhelming the space. Special touches like festive figurines, mini ornaments, a scented sachet, or a decorative box filled with chocolates on a nightstand or dresser invite joy and celebration.

Light a candle with a holiday scent like cinnamon, pine, or vanilla to infuse warmth and spirit into the room. A sprig of greenery or pinecones placed on a bedside table brings a bit of nature’s holiday charm indoors. For guest rooms, thoughtful touches like plush robes, slippers, or a tray of mini toiletries wrapped in festive packaging can make visitors feel extra special.

Soft lighting like candles, low-light lamps, or string lights create a warm glow that invites relaxation. During the holidays, simple updates like adding textures, seasonal accents, and personalized touches will turn all of your bedrooms into stylish, cozy, joyful holiday havens—perfect for celebrating the season in style and comfort.

I’M DREAMING OF A WINE CHRISTMAS

Cheers

cinnamon roll pancakes

A BELOVED FAMILY TRADITION MAKES CHRISTMAS MORNING EXTRA SWEET

Christmas traditions have always been close to my heart. When our oldest son was a year old, my husband and I started a new holiday ritual for our family, serving Cinnamon Roll Pancakes with special snowman plates and matching mugs used only on Christmas morning. Twenty-seven years later, those same plates still come out for our favorite Christmas breakfast, filling our home with love, laughter, and warm memories.

Ingredients

Cinnamon Filling:

• 4 tablespoons melted unsalted butter

• 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar

• ½ tablespoon ground cinnamon

Cream Cheese Glaze:

• 4 tablespoons unsalted butter

• 2 ounces cream cheese at room temperature

• ¾ cup powdered sugar

• ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Pancakes (or substitute a boxed mix):

• 1 cup all-purpose flour

• 2 teaspoons baking powder

• ½ teaspoon salt

• 1 cup milk

• 1 large egg lightly beaten

• 1 tablespoon canola or vegetable oil

Directions

Cinnamon Filling:

1. Combine the melted unsalted butter, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon in a medium-sized bowl

2. Scoop the cinnamon mixture into a Ziplock bag and set aside

Glaze:

1. In a small pan, melt butter over low heat

2. Whisk in cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract

3. Take the glaze off of the heat and set aside until ready to use on pancakes

Pancakes:

1. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl

2. Whisk in milk, egg, and canola or vegetable oil

Heat skillet to medium low. Once preheated, spray with non-stick spray. Add about ½ cup of the batter to the skillet and wait until bubbles start to form.

Open the bag with the cinnamon filling and re-stir to make sure that the butter is fully incorporated.

Snip the corner of the bag and create a swirl pattern of cinnamon filling in the center of the pancake. Be careful not to get it too close to the edge.

With a wide metal spatula, flip the pancake over and continue cooking for an additional one to two minutes until golden brown. Wipe out the pan each time and repeat with the remaining batter.

Warm the glaze if needed and drizzle over pancakes.
