COMING SOON Before Sarah Saxon was a facial plastic surgeon, she was an artist. Having had formal art classes starting at the young age of 7, she knew her talents and aptitude for portrait drawing would one day be incorporated into her professional life in some way. A native of Carthage, Texas, Dr. Saxon went on to Baylor University with a particular interest in transforming her lifelong fascination into surgical expertise. After graduating from Baylor, she spent over a decade in the most rigorous training in facial plastic surgery which included 4 years of medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, 5 years of residency in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at University of New Mexico, and additional fellowship training in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at Boston University under the mentorship of world renowned surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Spiegel. In addition, she mastered the nuances of reconstruction of congenital ear anomalies (microtia) with the world expert in the procedure, Dr. Satoru Nagata in Japan. Dr. Saxon then joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas where she taught residents and offered the full spectrum of both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. In 2016, she transitioned into private practice by opening Saxon MD Facial Plastic Surgery in DT Austin, focusing on cosmetic procedures of the face and offering a medspa with injectables and various skin treatments. Several years ago, Dr. Saxon fell in love with Dripping Springs. After moving to the area and seeing a need for her services, Dr. Saxon made it her goal to move her practice to Dripping Springs. Embracing the Season of Love This time of year, I’m always torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To go through the stress of planning a Valentine’s Day date out, or enjoy a cozy night having to do our own dishes? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s issue will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in our town. As a craft-loving, hair and makeup doing, girlie-girl I often wonder why God chose my path to be a mom of three boys. Seasons such as Valentine’s, prom, or watching women's volleyball strike a bit of jealousy to girl-moms out there. I can still school my boys in a game of basketball, hold no hostages in ping-pong and kill spiders. But, as the only woman of the house I remind myself that it's my job to bring a unique form of sensitivity that only a female can provide to a home full of boys. Our thoughts on this “Love Local” issue come down to one commonality: a love for Dripping Springs and what makes it unique. Inside the pages we recap our Love Thy Neighbor Gala and bring you a Dripping Springs production studio that Hollywood would envy. We tap into thoughts on love from local children, swapping date-night with a day-date, rekindling love on our local trails, longstanding members of our community who have built thriving businesses and more. Whether your love for the “season of love” runs deep, or you’d rather run away from it all together, we hope you’ll be inspired to love our town just a little more than you did before. Former Bodybuilder Turned
Christy Seguin, a former personal trainer and bodybuilder, transitioned from fitness to pursuing her passion for baking after moving to Austin from South Carolina. Having sold her gym, Christy dedicated herself entirely to the world of baking. A love for ’80s rock music, coupled with inspiration from Bret Michaels' Pets Rock cat toy line, led her to the creation of her bakery, Cakes Rock. Christy discovered the perfect venue for her bakery in an 1860s historic building in Dripping Springs. She named the venue Rose Haven after the premises’ antique rose garden and her niece, Haven, symbolizing beauty and tranquility. Rose Haven serves as both a
bakery space and an event venue, available for private functions like rehearsal dinners and baby showers. Christy will offer on-site baking and cake decorating classes in the future. With an appreciation for ’80s music and art, Christy makes every design distinctive and special. “Cake is edible art,” she says. Christy has competed on various baking shows, including the Food Network’s “Halloween Wars,” the Cooking Channel’s “Cake Hunters,” and Netflix’s “Sugar Rush.” The success of Cakes Rock is evident in its growth, with a team of two bakers and a dedicated cake designer on staff.
The bakery caters to a diverse range of occasions, from birthdays to baby showers to weddings. Notable creations include a Longhorns-inspired birthday cake for Matthew McConaughey, presented on Fox Sports, and a wedding cake adorned with sugar glass flowers, mirroring the Dale Chihuly glass blown art display at the San Antonio Museum of Art. Despite the competitive market, Christy emphasizes the uniqueness of each artist’s hand. ARTICLE BY STACY BAUGH Why create connection? Extensive research shows that we influence children in a positive way by establishing connection with them. Connection creates a sense of safety and openness. Connected relationships in a child’s life are like roots of a tree. Kids with strong roots grow, survive and withstand storms. As a parent, how do we create connection with our children while at the same time guiding them to become happy, contributing members of society?
HERE ARE 3 STEPS TO CREATING MORE CONNECTION WITH YOUR CHILD OF ALL AGES:
step one: schedule time together
• Give your undivided attention means engaging and attuning to your child. Put devices aside. Show your child you enjoy spending time with them. • Really listen and ask curiosity questions to get into your child’s world, such as, “Tell me more about that.” Or “How do you feel about what happened?” Notice how the question, “why” is not used. Typically, “why” brings on defensiveness. • Spend this time enjoying the interaction rather than focusing on problems and corrections. Save discussions of grades, performance in sports and behavior problems for another time. • Play! Play is the language our children understand.
step t wo: consider the iceberg
A behavior is not always what it seems. Think of behavior as the tip of an iceberg. This is what we see. Think of what is underneath the surface of the iceberg. This is what we can try to understand. Is my child feeling insecure, or lacking social skills in this situation? Is my child frustrated learning new skills or tired and hungry? This helps parents develop empathy for their child and a different way of thinking. Now there is an opportunity to teach skills and problem-solving.
step three: welcome feelings
• Validation goes a long way in creating connection. When kids feel understood they are more connected and more likely to cooperate. This sounds like, “I can see you are feeling upset.” Or “I guess that must have been hard for you.” • Encourage and model appropriate coping skills to handle difficult feelings. A common challenge for parents is modeling the behavior they would like to see from their children. For example, if you don’t want your child yelling at their sibling when angry, make sure you are not yelling at someone when you are angry. • Children do better when they feel better. Help your child to manage emotions through deep breathing, distraction or getting their body moving. There are many more ways to create connection at home. I hope you give my top three a try.

A shiny, sleek BMW sedan streaks across the screen, through a majestic mountain terrain under a perfectly blue sky. It’s easy to visualize the movie scene or commercial. It’s harder to imagine that the visual was created in Dripping Springs. Stray Vista Studios innovates with unique technology that allows for a revolutionary shift in filmmaking. Founder Nate Strayer gave DSCL a tour of this world-class facility and told us about the work his team is doing.
WHAT DOES STRAY VISTA OFFER AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT?
Virtual Production is the mixing of 3 different industries, live entertainment, video games and film. We’re mixing LED panels that are traditionally used at concerts with video game engines and using them for motion pictures. Stray Vista is at the forefront of this innovative way of doing things. Brandon Rummel has encyclopedic knowledge of the Beatles and loves jamming with his band during their weekly rehearsals. That alone may not seem remarkable, but Brandon, 31, is disabled and non-verbal. “If he could tell you, he’d probably say his favorite Beatles song is ‘All You Need Is Love,’” says his mom Leah Rummel, who founded the Dripping Springs Friendship Club six years ago to help Brandon find a community of his peers. Members, ages 18 to 55, and their families get together most Fridays for bowling, movies, art at The Art Garage and, of course, music. Fourteen members of the DS Friendship Club now belong to The Eddie Ray Band, a musical group for
musicians with disabilities. The band began organically when Leah hired local musician Phil Montfort as Brandon’s caregiver. “Leah was looking for someone musically inclined, who would have a connection with Brandon,” says Phil. The band, which includes four local, volunteer musicians, have performed at the Founder’s Day Festival, Red Arena, and most recently their ‘Jingle All Our Ways’ benefit at Hudson’s on Mercer, where they were joined by other local artists to raise funds for the DS Friendship Club, band equipment and their latest goal — recording a professional album of their original songs.

Under the stars on a perfect December night, an elite crowd of movers and shakers gathered for conversation and revelry at Pecan Springs Ranch for the Second Annual Dripping Springs City Lifestyle fundraising gala. Neighbors arrived dressed to impress and came together to celebrate the spirit of giving, while raising nearly $30,000 for two very deserving local families. “Through branding, storytelling, beautiful photography and gatherings like this gala to celebrate relationships, we will relentlessly serve our community as long as possible,” says DSCL Publisher Will Rivera. “This was an extra special night as we were able to focus our fundraising efforts on two beautiful families that experienced immense tragedy this year. They saw the magic of our community in full display — in their honor.”

Highlights included upscale selections from Swig Cheese, sweets from Cakes Rock, and olive oil cake paired with organic wine from Summer Revival. Pig Pen BBQ’s Bill Warren greeted attendees with handshakes and plates of barbecue specialties. For the second consecutive year, Vista Brewing curated a delightful array of food and drink pairings guaranteed to please the palate. Outside, partygoers sat at candlelit tables and strolled the beautiful and expansive grounds under elegant string lighting while sipping a selection of local drinks. Texas wine from Lost Draw Cellars paired perfectly with the elevated tastings. Josh Visi from Twisted X Brewing handed out cold beers next to the brewery’s signature 1971 Mercury Marquis, and guests lined up to sample drinks and relax in the High Desert Cactus Vodka mobile tasting room. As the evening wore on, the crowd moved inside for the announcements of the raffle winners. More than two dozen prize packages included jet setter trips to England and Las Vegas, a custom guitar signed by George Strait and a weekend with a Ferrari. Local artist and MC “Who is BC?” delighted the crowd with unexpected covers and sing-along favorites. “It’s been amazing to watch what the magazine has evolved into,” says DSCL Publisher Karen Rivera. “Will and I really have a passion for giving back and being able to combine that with something beautiful and inspiring that goes out to the community monthly has been incredible.”

Throughout the night, revelers donned silly accessories, kissed their partners and toasted with their besties in the Peachy Keen Photo Camper. “This is such a great party,” says Dripping Springs socialite Kristen Wentworth. “It really shows the best that Dripping Springs has to offer. I'm absolutely blown away!” In addition to food and drink donations, Foster Village, Hill Country Rally for Kids, and Good Bourbon for a Good Cause, volunteered their time to spread the word about their work at the party. Sarah Rose, campaign manager for Dripping Springs Community Library met with partygoers and spoke about future expansion efforts. CONTINUED >

fter working with luxury brands in New York City, Kat Romanelli moved to Central Texas in 2020. Her mother Laura Romanelli, a self-described “serial entrepreneur,” sold her businesses in New Mexico and also relocated. “I worked in finance in Austin, and I longed to be a creative again,” Kat shares. In 2022, Kat and Laura fulfilled their dream of owning a business together when they purchased Wild Bunches, a wedding floral business in Dripping Springs. “We both have art degrees and became florists. We translated our experience with color palettes and composition to
floral design.” The business exploded and expanded to open a storefront, Delphine Floral. “We saw a gap in the market and brought Delphine, a community-centered, European-influenced flower shop to Dripping Springs. A floral bar where you can walk in, see the work happening, and pick loose flowers to build your own floral designs.” “Beauty for beauty’s sake is important,” Kat remarks. “Flowers are such a simple thing that make people so happy. It’s really special to give someone joy that easily, especially in this day and age.” Kat expresses, “It’s risky to put yourself out there creatively with a concept you love, and you hope others feel the
same way. Going through life with your person is such a blessing. Originally from Houston, David Simmons made the move to San Marcos at 18 to pursue a football career at Texas State University. Martinique Simmons’s family, Driftwood natives, relocated to Kyle after losing their father at the tender age of 6. She, too, attended Texas State. In 2009 after David did a stint in the Canadian Football League, he returned to Texas State to finish his degree. Fate brought David and Martinique together while both working at a school for children with traumatic brain injuries. Their connection blossomed from friendship into a true partnership in 2010. “Going through life with your person is such a blessing. It isn’t always easy but nothing worth anything ever is,” says Martinique. Not quite her childhood ambition, Martinique never envisioned herself
becoming an insurance agent. With curiosity and a bit of fate, Martinique responded to a social media post about a job opening, and soon secured a job. Over the course of 11 years, she immersed herself in the industry. The decision to embark on entrepreneurship with David arrived in the fall of 2022, leading to the creation of The Simmons Group Insurance Services. The leap into entrepreneurship, although daunting, left them wondering why they hadn’t taken it sooner. “It’s a scary step to take, but once we did, we wondered why we hadn’t done it sooner! But it’s God’s timing, not ours.” The power duo is conquering life with grace balancing business ownership and two active kids. The Simmons reside close to Hays City Store on a piece of land they call their little slice of heaven on earth.

H A R MON Y IN HE A LING The Tracy Family
Drs. Chae and Monya Tracy crossed paths at Parker University, a chiropractic college in Dallas. After graduation, Dr. Chae, hailing from Oklahoma, had a longing to return home, while Monya, a West Texas native, envisioned a life in San Angelo. To find common ground, they considered Austin, where Monya had family ties. Both underwent additional training in upper cervical chiropractic care in Austin, shaping their decision on where to settle, serve, and raise a family. Although many towns were considered, fate brought them together in charming Dripping Springs. They immediately immersed themselves in the community. Chae became involved in the Lions Club, Ducks Unlimited and the Chamber of Commerce. While Monya devoted her philanthropic efforts toward the Rotary Club and “The Springs” which is now the YMCA. They are also continually involved in numerous initiatives, from Founder’s Day to supporting athletes and students. They
are most passionate about Oklahaven Children’s Chiropractic Center, a large-scale philanthropy that transforms the lives of kids with life-changing chiropractic treatments. Starting Family First Chiropractic in 2005 with a mission to serve families, they have since expanded to Curis Functional Health, adding holistic services. They aimed to go beyond chiropractic bringing in Dr. Tracy’s sister, Dr. Breca Tracy, Ph.D., to run REGENERATE alongside Curis making the trio of partners a comprehensive healthcare center for alternative and holistic care. Balancing between their two practices, involvement in boards and committees, and their children’s activities, the Tracy family remains actively immersed in our community. Despite witnessing significant growth over the past nineteen years, they appreciate the enduring small-town charm and maintain a strong commitment to helping, loving and serving others in the wonderful community we fondly call Drip.

Purchased in August 2022, Amanda’s creative flair found an outlet, adding a personal touch to weddings and events. The camper’s transformation included new floors, fresh paint, updated decor, and an array of props. Armed with an event planning degree, Grimm reintroduced Peachy Keen Photo Camper to the wedding industry, quickly turning it into a local sensation. Inside the quaint camper, guests have the opportunity to let loose and be creative with friends, creating timeless memories in a carefree atmosphere.

• ¼ cup fresh raspberries, plus more for garnish • ½ oz simple syrup • 2 oz Dripping Springs Artisan Gin • ¾ oz fresh lemon juice (about ½ large lemon) • 1 egg white
Muddle the raspberries. Place ¼ cup fresh raspberries and ½ oz simple syrup in the cup of a cocktail shaker. Use a muddler to crush the raspberries very well. Add remaining ingredients. Fill the shaker halfway with ice, then add 2 oz gin, ¾ oz fresh lemon juice, and one fresh egg white. Secure lid, then shake for 20 seconds to separate the drink until the egg white is frothy. Strain into a chilled coupe glass. Then garnish with additional fresh raspberries.
