Spring symbolizes the beauty of new beginnings. Nature and its design are simply incredible. Every year the old dies off and new growth reveals its beauty through budding trees and flowers. The sound of birds chirping gives a feeling of refresh and hope for brighter days ahead. The crisp air begins to turn warmer, inviting us to spend more time outdoors. We prepare our gardens and flowerbeds, and each new bloom awakens a sense of joy and accomplishment. For our Explore issue, we share travels from around the world with a luxury travel agent, tips for the best bluebonnet photos, a day-trip guide for nearby Johnson City, and dive into other local businesses exploring ways to make an impact in Dripping Springs. Our town is filled with a multitude of diverse spots to discover. It could be a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family. You can also explore nature with a hike at Pedernales Falls, or enjoy a relaxing stay at a niche boutique hotel. We’re fortunate to be surrounded by something for everyone. Exploration doesn’t have to be extravagant or even require leaving the house. It can be as simple as eating dinner al fresco on your patio, building a fort outside with your kids, or even camping in the yard. We hope this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. We all tend to get stuck in the same mundane routine. Use spring as a reminder and opportunity to keep exploring the beauty of life. Luxury hotels: Mid-range hotels are reducing standard offerings, making luxury hotels stand out even more than before. People are willing to spend more on their accommodations, realizing where you stay is a big part of the total travel experience. Socially responsible destinations: Make sustainability a choice when planning. Recognize the impact of sustainability and how travel impacts the planet. Ultra-luxe cruises: Explore destinations more thoroughly, thanks to the intimate

access these cruises provide. People love the authentic experiences these luxury cruise ships now offer. Booking for 2024 and beyond: Although there are still last-minute trips, booking a year or more ahead is becoming the norm. Greece, in particular, is in demand and pricing is higher than in the past. Local investment group brings a fresh approach to growth in Dripping Springs

The people behind Mesa Verde have a mission: to preserve the natural beauty of Dripping Springs while providing an alternative to the trending maximum-density neighborhood model. “Keeping Texas, Texas” is their mission. The group is working to protect the beautiful land from overdevelopment. Each lot has been carefully designed to preserve the natural landscape and retain as many trees as possible. Located on Fitzhugh Road just west of Bell Springs Road, the new community will hit the market this Spring. Comprising 34 lots between 6-14 acres, Mesa Verde offers beautiful Hill Country views and Barton Creek frontage. The meticulously planned development is home to abundant wildlife and the tranquility of a Hill Country lifestyle, with the convenience of nearby metropolitan amenities and Dripping Springs schools. The investment team consists of a former Major League Baseball player, a developer, an oil & gas wildcatter, and a cowboy who’s a ranch improvement expert. They came together organically and bring years of knowledge and expertise in land planning, building, and nature preservation. They are also local, with families

residing in both Dripping Springs and Lake Travis, and are invested in the future of this community. Jeff Kent played 17 seasons as a second baseman in the big leagues and was the MVP of the National League in 2000. Since retiring from baseball, he has moved on to other ventures, including real estate developments such as the Hill Country Indoor sports facility in Bee Cave. The Design/Build team for this project is Langle Design & Construction Management, owned by father and son Brad and Jude Langle. They bring 40 years of land design and commercial construction experience. Scott Garrick has worked for 25 years in the oil & gas industry and provides the project with extensive knowledge of land planning and preservation. Seth Weinberg, a cattle ranch & horse expert, owns a ranch and land improvement business and has 15 years of property enhancement knowledge. The construction team is already hard at work on the infrastructure, installing underground utilities, and high-speed fiber throughout. Roadways are expected to be complete by end of summer, and home construction for the first Mesa Verde residents will begin by end of the year.

Explore Johnson City The easiest day-trip destination features something for everyone ARTICLE BY MICAH WIENER

No longer just a pit stop on the way to wine country, Johnson City is now a destination. The charming downtown is walkable and offers small-town charm in spades. Storefronts feature art galleries, shopping destinations, and plenty of food and drink options. Amy Crowson grew up in Dripping Springs. She met her husband Henry, a winemaker, while they both worked at Camp Lucy. They moved to Johnson City in 2006. “I’m still close to Dripping Springs, which will always be home,” says Amy. “It’s cool to see the growth of Dripping and experience the growth of J.C.” Amy owns and runs PICKNIC’D, a relaxed restaurant with grab-and-go items perfect for a day of exploring. Standout choices include Mom’s Turkey Sandwich and an excellent meat and cheese board featuring constantly rotating local selections. Just a one-minute walk away from PICKNIC’D, Nice N Easy is a stylish bar in one of downtown’s oldest buildings. “It’s just so cool,” laughs Amy. “You walk in and say ‘wow, I can’t believe this is here.’”

Nice N Easy is the home of Yokefellow Beer, brewed by co-owner Garrett Crowell, formerly head brewer at Jester King. The menu features a host of local pours, a few food items, and a full bar featuring the best cocktails in town. The bar recently celebrated its first anniversary with a blowout party featuring local vendors. On another recent Saturday afternoon visit the vibe was laid back, the music was low, and the drinks were delicious. Johnson City’s most unique place may be the Science Mill, a family destination offering a fun, interactive learning environment for all ages. The museum features STEM-focused exhibits, plus welcoming picnic tables to enjoy lunch with the family. “You’d think it’s a museum in New York or Los Angeles,” Amy says. “And, it’s not just for kids. Exploring the Perfect Tile Choices

Are you decorating a leisure room that should make a statement or a bedroom that will be soothing and welcoming? The aesthetic of the space will determine your selection. Keep in mind, your color pallet should remain cohesive throughout your home. Choosing the appropriate tile material is imperative for each specific space. Ceramic tiles are more affordable but are more likely to chip or crack. Porcelain tiles are scratch and stain resistant. Natural materials such as limestone, travertine, and marble are so durable they can be used for interior and exterior. Cement and clay tiles have become more popular this year. They can be stunning but are porous.

Tile size is important to consider. Large format tiles are generally chosen for bigger areas such as main house flooring and outdoor living areas. Small format tiles are best used for backsplashes, bathtub surroundings, shower floors, and small accent walls. As you can imagine, the color and style will set the tone of your room. Flooring that's light in color can make a room feel large and open. Dark colors look better in an open area with lots of light unless you want to create a moody space. Pro tip: To create a bold statement, select tiles that are opposites on the color wheel. To create a relaxing room, choose colors that are similar and next to each other on the color wheel. For example,

tone-on-tone colors create a more spalike open feel even if the tiles are different textures and sizes. Selecting tile can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. The tile in your home is an investment and is a hard finish that is not easily changed after installation. I always recommend visiting a showroom where you can lay out all your selections together or hire a designer to help you make decisions or answer questions. You’ll have plenty! Tile size, color, material, installation, grout, and edging are all important factors that can be easy to overlook without professional guidance. Lost Draw founder Andrew Sides came from humble beginnings in the small High Plains farming town of Brownfield, Texas. Andrew spent his high school summers in the sweltering heat, planting grapevines with his uncle, Andy Timmons. He had no idea that a seed was being planted that would later grow into his passion for wine. Andrew earned a civil engineering degree from Texas Tech in 2009. After working for a few years after college, he abandoned what would have been a more steady and predictable career path to follow his dream of growing and making his own Texas wine.

“It was absolutely a risk and one that had plenty of reasons not to bear rewards,” said Andrew in an interview with DSCL. “But I knew in my gut that I wasn’t going to be satisfied until we at least gave it a shot.” Once the initial idea had caught fire, Andrew worked with his uncle and his father-inlaw to create a rough business plan, and in 2012, Lost Draw produced its first vintage of wine. In 2014, they opened their original tasting room in downtown Fredericksburg. Andrew and his team now have their sights set on new horizons. Inspired by the incredible growth in Texas wine tourism, fandom, and wine quality that’s taken place over the last decade, they’re swinging for the fences. Ground broke this past fall on a new tasting room and winery for the brand located in Johnson City, and the first phase of the project opened in December. Open 7 days a week, the tasting room in Johnson City currently offers intimate wine experiences in a sleek building set back behind the estate vineyard. Enjoy being welcomed with a glass of Texas wine as you make your way through the wraparound horseshoe entrance and take in views of the vines. As the project progresses toward a grand opening in the Spring of 2024, visitors will be able to watch the full vision come to life right before their eyes. CONTINUED >

Spring is in the air. Every year after a hard February freeze Texans start to question whether will the wildflowers and bluebonnets will bloom. Each year, the answer is yes. We love our state flower; its uniqueness gives us a sense of pride and its resilience gives us inspiration. Highway roadsides typically hold the most robust patches of bluebonnets. Many make it a tradition to take photographs among the blooms. It is tempting, but not safe to pull over when you see a thick patch of bluebonnets on the side of I-35. There are plenty of safe and visually appealing locations to consider; Muleshoe Park in Spicewood, St. Edward’s University and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, as well as Willow City Loop and Wildseed Farms in Fredericksburg. Once you’ve chosen a destination, here are a few tips I’ve learned along the way to get the best shots while keeping your family safe and respecting the flower. • If you’re photographing children, talk to them beforehand about bluebonnets and what they mean. Let them know this is going to be fun, and also an honor to take pictures with the Texas state flower. • Make sure your children (and spouse) have recently eaten. No one likes a grumpy, hungry subject! Don’t be afraid of bribery. Pack fruit snacks to give between shots and a lollipop as a reward at the end of the shoot. • For outfits, stick with solid neutral colors. A field of flowers tends to be busy enough. Adding a light print like gingham can tie it all together.

• Bluebonnets are often located in full sun; this means mid-day pictures can turn out harsh and you’re likely to have squinted eyes. Aim to do your pictures about an hour after sunrise or an hour before sundown. Overcast days help to capture the truest color of the blooms. They also provide the best light for subjects. • After you find a safe spot away from whizzing cars, check the area to make sure it’s free of bees. The best area to shoot may be patchy, which is actually a benefit. You want a place to sit without compromising and smashing the beautiful flowers. • Now that you’ve found the perfect location, dressed the family, packed the snacks, and timed the sun, the only thing left to do is get the shot. Place your subject on a small blanket in a bare area within the patch. You will want a full patch in front to create an illusion of abundance. To make the field look full, get low. Set the camera level with the blooms, making sure to capture the front full of flowers and many tops of the blooms behind. Of course, focus on your subject nestled in between. We love our state flower, and while it isn’t illegal to pick bluebonnets on public land, it is discouraged. The more bluebonnets that live through the season and go to seed, the more we will have to enjoy next year. Ear th Day Seed Bombs DIY Earth Day 2023: Saturday, April 22

Creating and planting seed bombs is an easy, hands-on way to teach your children about nature and have fun at the same time.

// Materials

To make the seed bombs you will need: • Colored paper - blue, green, and white • Packets of wildflower seeds • Water • Bowls • Blender

// Step One

Start by tearing up the paper and putting it into three separate bowls. Soak with water and leave to absorb for about half an hour.

// Step Two

A grown-up is needed for the next step. Pour all contents from the bowl of white paper into the blender and blitz thoroughly until it forms a wet pulp. Add enough additional water so that it blends easily. The excess water will be squeezed out later. Follow the same process for the green and blue bowls, returning the pulp to each original bowl.

// Step Three

Choose the seeds you want to add to your seed bomb mix. We used Texas Wildflower and Zinnia seeds from Triple S Feed Store. Add seeds to each pulp mixture and combine thoroughly with your hands. The kids love this part and this is a great chance to talk about how seeds turn into flowers.

// Step Five

You can let your seed bombs dry and enjoy them as decoration for a bit, or plant them immediately. If they are dry at planting time, rehydrate them with a little water. Happy planting, and Happy Earth Day!

// Step Four

To form the seed bombs, scoop a small amount of each color pulp into your hand and form a ball, squeezing out excess water. You can challenge older kids to make their seed bombs look like Earth with its continents and ice caps. To give them an even finish, roll the balls gently between the palms of your hands.

Since moving to our area in 2009, Michael Lawsage has been hard at work connecting people to local businesses. He spent the last decade working for touring companies, driving and leading wine tours. His personable nature quickly spawned a nickname that’s become his calling card. “I picked up these women from Dallas. I introduced myself as ‘Mike,’ and they instantly started screaming 'Magic Mike!' It’s something we’ve kept going,” he says. “It breaks the ice and it’s just kinda fun.” Two years ago, he decided to go out on his own. With some help from his son Drake, Driven ATX was born. Drake handles the legalities and marketing so that Michael can focus on doing what he does best: entertaining people. The company’s new Mercedes Benz Sprinter seats 14 and is available for rides all over Central Texas. “When we pick people up and take them to Fredericksburg, people start as acquaintances and they end up as best friends,” says Mike. He also connects with people through music. He’s the founder and singer for the Above the Law band, playing shows across Dripping Springs. Mike and his band give back to the community through monthly performances at Hill Country Nursing and Rehab Center. “It’s all charity work, and we love it,” Mike says. Founders Day began as a chicken cook-off in 1988 and has become an annual tradition drawing more than 5,000 Texans from across the state to gather in Dripping Springs and celebrate small-town life. “It is a three-day celebration that honors the pioneers who settled the land in 1854 and builds community spirit,” said Brenda Medcalf, Founders Day Commission Chair. The festival starts with the Grand Parade and features carnival rides, cook-off competitions, live music,

food, beer, and more than 150 business vendors and arts and crafts booths. Proceeds benefit local small businesses and non-profit organizations. “This event gives us a chance to showcase our small town and the bonds that unite us,” noted Medcalf. HYPER-LOCAL PODCASTING WITH MALLETT AND MICHELLE

When Steve Mallett and Michelle Lewis decided to start a podcast two years ago to promote their real estate business, they had no idea what to expect. Steve is always on the move. He’s an ultra-marathoner, charity race organizer, and is active everywhere around town. People know Steve. Thanks to Mallett and Michelle on Dripping Springs, people really know Steve. “I'm always surprised when someone stops me at H-E-B to talk about an inside joke from the show. We’ve found that the nastiness on social media can be overcome by listening to somebody,” he says. “It’s really powerful.” Michelle has been equally involved in the community, raising three children with her husband, Todd. “Parents and kids around town used to call me Mama Lewis,” she laughs. “Well, I suppose they still do.” “We were so plugged into cheer, wrestling, and all the kids’ activities,” Michelle says. “When they grew up, I really wanted to stay relevant and get to know the community members on an intimate level.” The hosts start each episode with light-heart banter, followed by an interview with a Dripping Springs community member. Steve initially thought they would quickly run out of interesting people to talk with, but he's been pleasantly surprised.

“There are so many cool people in this town,” he says. “Every episode, I sit back and say ‘no way, what an amazing story.’” Another surprising thing happened along the way: people started to pay attention. “We never intended to be, but we’ve become accidental journalists,” says Steve. “There’s a responsibility with that and we try really hard to get the facts right.” They’ve talked to local business owners, politicians, and school administrators. The mayor (a former guest) reached out to them to talk about the impact of February's winter storm. Guests are now booked months in advance, and the pair have talked to community members with influence extending far outside the city limits. However, their favorite podcasts are the ones that tell the story of Dripping Springs. Their conversation with former high school football coach and historian Carl Waits serves as an oral history of a previous era. “We are a storytelling podcast,” adds Michelle. “Everyone has a story and we’re trying to give people a chance to tell theirs."

Lyngso Fitness CHANGING THE FITNESS GAME

Lyngso Fitness Academy is not your average gym. It’s a state of mind and way of living that most have never thought to explore. Paul and Angie Lyngos’ gym in Chicago shut down when COVID hit in 2020. It had been their home for a decade. Although brick-and-mortar access was unavailable to their clients, the need for health, fitness, and most of all, community engagement, was at an all-time high. They quickly got to work making lemonade out of the lemons handed to them by the pandemic. The Lyngsos set out to disturb the new status quo by helping their clients through online platforms. Lyngso Fitness Academy was born. “Our clients are busy working moms and dads with limited time and mental bandwidth to put into their fitness,” says Angie. “The online relationship allows flexibility for them to be coached from anywhere at any time.” Since their gym was no longer tethered to one location, it was time for a change. With family in Texas, Paul, Angie, and their twin boys made Dripping Springs their new home. “We wanted to be in a place where people are proud of where they are from, a strong

community that offers opportunity and growth. Dripping Springs was that place,” says Angie. “I believe we were put on this earth to move. It is truly a gift to have a fully-abled working body and I don’t want to take that for granted,” says Angie. “My mom passed 2 years ago from multiple-systems-atrophy, a neurological disease that caused every muscle in her body to deteriorate. Her choice to move was taken from her. Being fit is a gift we cannot take for granted. It allows me and my family a way to explore and experience the beauty this world has to offer.” The Lyngos’ model teaches universal, daily principles to follow with food, mindset, and exercise, empowering and enabling clients to stay consistent. “Our model is for everyone because we don’t have a one size fits all solution. KU MQUAT FR EN C H 7 5 With Hill Country Happy Hour INGREDIENTS: • • • •

1 1/2 ounces gin (Waterloo Gin) 3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice 3/4 ounce kumquat simple syrup (see below) Champagne or Prosecco

INSTRUCTIONS: Add the first 3 ingredients to a champagne flute. Top with Champagne or Prosecco. Garnish with candied kumquats. To make the simple syrup, add 2 cups water and 2 cups sugar to a saucepan. Stir over medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Add in 1 cup of cleaned, halved Kumquats. Cook over medium heat for 20 minutes. If you can’t find kumquats, don't worry. Make a simple syrup using any kind of fruit that looks good.
