Home. There is so much emotion in that little four-letter word. Home is where we’re grounded. It’s our comfortable safe space where we start and end each day. While the details are different for each of us, we all value home. For me, home is a combination of things. It’s a town, a physical dwelling space, the people and items within, and the sentiment those combine to create. The great Maya Angelou said it best, “The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.” Home is a feeling of familiarity and warmth you can’t get anywhere else. The ease of knowing you’re with those who love you for you. I love the feeling of coming home mid-day. I change into sweats, put on my slippers, and sit down to finish the workday at my messy kitchen nook while I sing loudly (and badly). That is home for me. This month we explore what makes home special to our readers. That includes beautiful aesthetics and design, the food and drinks we share, advice from home professionals, and most importantly – the people that turn a house into a home. We hope that this look into their lives and work will bring people in this community closer together. Readers tell us they keep and display our magazine beyond the month of publication. It thrills us to know that our work is used as coffee table art, encouraging conversation between families and guests inside homes in our community. We feel so proud to create a resource valued by our neighbors, and we strive every month to deliver the value you expect. A LEGACY NOT TO BE FORGOTTEN

On January 23, our nation and community lost patriot and beloved husband and father Joseph Kapacziewski. An Army Ranger who served ten tours, Sergeant First Class “Joe Kap” beat the odds by becoming the first Ranger to return to active duty as an amputee. A hero unlike any other, he received multiple honors, including the No Greater Sacrifice Freedom Award, an Army Commendation Medal, a Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts. Joe is survived by his wife, Kimberly, his sons Wyatt and Cody, and countless soldiers inspired by his devotion to family, country, and his fellow Rangers. His legacy will live on.

On a dusty road away from the hustle of town, I met with designer, stylist, and vintage expert, Leah Finn. A fourth-generation Texan, Leah landed in California in pursuit of the Hollywood dream at the age of 17. Instead of waiting tables between auditions like most of her acquaintances, Leah began working for celebrity designer Waldo Fernandez. While learning the principles of design and working for the stars, she quickly realized just how expensive and unattainable this lifestyle was for the average person. “At the time I was a broke college student, trying to make ends meet. But I still wanted to look, feel, and live fabulously,” says Leah.

In 2007, she and a friend launched a YouTube channel called, A Fab Life. They set out to prove you don’t have to have a million bucks to look and feel like a millionaire. The YouTube success led to an opportunity to co-host an ABC-syndicated daytime talk show, FABLife, with co-stars such as Tyra Banks, Chrissy Teigen, Joe Zee, and Lauren Makk. A dream come true. In the midst of her budding professional career, Leah met her husband, Michael, who was pursuing his acting dreams in Los Angeles. Michael is a fellow Texan, and they quickly bonded over their love of their home state. When FABLife came to an end, the Finns decided it was time for a new chapter for their family. It was time to go home. In 2016. the Finns quickly realized that housing prices prevented them from getting their dream home in Austin. Their realtor sent them a listing in Caliterra and they immediately fell in love. The only memory the Finns had of Dripping Springs was when Michael’s high school football team played against the Tigers. They loved the house so much that they decided to take a chance on this new-to-them town. “It became abundantly clear, quickly, how much we loved this little town. Everyone was so friendly,” Leah said. “We made fast friends with neighbors, our builder, people at the gym, and the local coffee shop, Mazama. We couldn’t even go to the grocery store without seeing someone we knew. It was a stark contrast from how we lived in L.A., and we couldn’t have been happier. I remember being shocked that we could bring our son and our dog everywhere. We loved being home and reconnecting to our roots.” The Finns had purchased a piece of land as an investment property a few years prior. When COVID hit, they took it as a sign to begin building a home with more space. Leah's dad, a home builder with River Hills Custom Homes out of New Braunfels, took on this personal project. Spending many days and evenings at their property during the lockdown, they were continually blown away by the views and the sunsets. They felt so validated in their belief that they made the right decision, they even decided to build a guest house for Leah’s mom. CONTINUED >

The father-daughter team worked closely on the project, with dad overseeing the build and Leah the design. You can take the girl out of Hollywood but you can’t take the Hollywood out of the girl, and Leah decided that this whole endeavor would make a great reality show. “I wanted to give people a glimpse of what it really takes to start a home from the ground up and make it fun by involving the craziness of my family. Would we all kill each other by the end of the project? How would my parents work with each other after being divorced for 35 years? Sounded like good TV to me,” she exclaimed. The Design Network picked up the show and the Finns began production of a seven-episode docuseries in late 2020, the same day they broke ground on the construction of Finn Family Farm. You can stream the whole series, Home to Homestead, now on YouTube. Once the building began, Leah became obsessed with being a good land steward. She dove deep into regenerative agriculture practices and permaculture landscape principles. The Finns prioritized the reduction of strain on the environment in all aspects of their new home, inside and out. “Being that I have had a love of thrifting from back in my Youtube days, I wanted to make sure that we used as many reclaimed pieces in this new build as possible,” said Leah. “I love inspiring people to shop second-hand first or empower followers to plant more pollinators. Nurturing nature and sharing that passion with our children and in turn with the world keeps me doing what I’m doing,” Leah said. “It really all goes back to the same basic message: reduce, reuse, recycle, and make it Fabulous!” Follow along with Leah’s design finds at @Livingwithleah and @FinnFamilyFarm.

It’s springtime in the Hill Country and the perfect time to plant your herb garden. March is a great month to grow oregano, parsley, mint, thyme, rosemary, and sage. Herb gardens are manageable in size, making them easy to plant and maintain, even for those without green thumbs. All homemade meals, both sweet and savory, can be enhanced with the bounty from a herb garden. • Oregano adds a distinctive flavor to pizza and pasta sauces, salad dressings, and perfectly compliments beef and chicken dishes. It is also known to aid the immune system. • Mint is super versatile. It adds freshness to salads, iced tea, or even pesto. It’s also a welcome addition to desserts.

• Parsley is great for digestion and wonderful in hot soups, sauces, salads, and even smoothies. • Thyme pairs well with pork and chicken, especially as an addition to a marinade. • Sage is a classic compliment to turkey and butternut squash. It also adds a warming presence to pasta. • Rosemary enhances anything with olive oil and garlic. It’s also lovely in a vase with fresh flowers. Herbs from the home garden add a level of freshness and sophistication to everyday home cooking. Experiment with different herbs and flavors to create the inspiration to make every family meal special. Cook with love and eat with joy!

Spr ing Mint Pesto & W hipped Fet a + French Gr illed Bread This spring mint pesto with whipped feta is a show-stopper for an appetizer. It’s great for entertaining friends or just a night at home with loved ones. Serves 4

Ingre di e nt s:

For the mint pesto: For the whipped feta: • 1 cup fresh mint leaves • 1/4 cup crumbled feta • 1/2 cup fresh parsley • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1/2 cup olive oil • juice of 1 lemon • 1/3 cup pine nuts • sea salt & black pepper to taste • 1/4 cup fresh • 1 garlic clove grated Parmesan • 1 clove garlic • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt • 1/2 jalapeño (optional)

1. Add all ingredients for the pesto into a food processor. Blend all ingredients until smooth. Pour into a small bowl. Set aside. 2. Blend all ingredients for whipped feta and set aside in another bowl. 3. Using a grill or cast iron pan with olive oil, grill bread until crisp. Spread a layer of whipped feta on each slice and then

Items like throw blankets and accent chairs aren’t permanent, but these choices are important compliments to your tile, lighting, and paint colors.

Textiles are literally soft finishes; anything fabric or woven. These items set the mood for your home. Don’t be afraid to use different patterns in the same color scheme. You want pillows, throws, and drapes to accent your color pallet, without being distracting. The use of different textures will create depth and character in your home. Accessories, like books, boxes, candlesticks, and vases are also soft finishes. The key to designing a space and making it your own is to layer your accessories. Add beads on top of some books. Use twigs or an olive branch to add height to a vase. Use your imagination to make it your own.

Obviously, furniture pieces are important soft finishes. Picking the right-sized furniture is essential in order to keep your home looking clutter free yet still feeling complete. Always measure before shopping. Be picky, and think through your spaces carefully before buying. We all have a story to tell with our home design choices. Art helps you tell that story. FOR YOUTH Dripping Springs and the surrounding areas are constantly evolving. Even if you’re new to our area, you see it. Growth. Investment. Change. A constant throughout the last half-century, one locally based non-profit has been working with a singular focus: to promote healing and inspire hope for children in crisis. Founded by Rosemary Burke and Charlie Campise to help the foster children of Texas, Burke Center for Youth was opened in 1973 as a residential treatment center at Pathfinder’s Ranch in Driftwood. Over the decades, the organization has helped thousands of boys overcome the traumas in their lives. “It’s a great mission, helping young men who are lost and abused. We help take care of boys lost in the system,” says Steven Fournier, the executive director of the Burke Center. Ten years ago, some friends from church invited him to help the center. The retired Air Force Lt. Colonel spent a few years volunteering before being hired to lead the Burke team in 2015. The challenges some of these boys face are unimaginable, but that makes the mission that much more important. “We take care of kids who have been sexually abused. It sets us apart,” he said. Pathfinder's Ranch is a residential treatment facility for boys aged 10-17. Every resident has been removed from their home due to abuse and associated behaviors. These adolescents begin the healing process through therapy (individual, group, equine), education at the on-site school, and the day-to-day jobs working the grounds. The ultimate goal is to help children rebuild their lives in a manner that will break the cycle of abuse and give them the tools necessary to flourish. To commemorate the historic milestone, the center is throwing a free open house celebration for the community. All are welcome to attend this family-friendly event. “We’ll have an open house and picnic lunch,” Steven says. “Guests will hear from a boy from each decade, and the current boys will show the community what this place means to them. It’s going to be a very special day.”

In addition to showcasing the ranch and the work of the group, it’s also an opportunity to give back to the people who have supported the mission throughout the years. “It really is a ‘thank you’ from the Burke Center to the community for 50 years of partnership,” says Steven. In addition to raising awareness, the center is always looking to fundraise to continue their mission. The organization is looking to raise $50,000 in 50 days, to celebrate 50 years. The campaign is underway and the best way to help is to become a Community Hero Sponsor. Visit burkecenterforyouth.org for more information and join today. The Burke Center also provides foster and adoption services to over 100 Texas children annually. In addition, the center helps with transitional living for boys between 18 and 21. These young men have aged out of foster care, but are unable to live independently yet. The program offers continued therapy, job placement, college enrollment, and continued life skills education. “We’ve focused on boys for 50 years. People might assume that boys are better equipped to take care of themselves,” Steven says. “But, that isn’t necessarily the case.” As our society and community continue to rapidly change, it’s more important than ever to support those left behind. With continued community investment, the Burke Center for Youth will continue to help overlooked and vulnerable kids grow for years to come.

The rolling hills, Friday night lights, and a small-town community filled with mom-andpop shops are just a few of the things that local realtor Kim Burke loves most about Dripping Springs. Living in the area since 2005, Kim has witnessed so much growth, yet appreciates how neighborly the town remains. Take in History, One Sip at a Time

Join the Driftwood Historical Conservation Society (DHCS) for their second annual Heritage Festival at Vista Brewing on Sunday, April 2 from noon to 6 p.m. The mission of DHCS is to preserve and enhance Driftwood and the Onion Creek Valley’s rural beauty, heritage, community, and sense of belonging. Vista Brewing will open its barrel room as a small Driftwood museum where DHCS will display historical artifacts, pictures, and videos about the city’s past, present, and future. The goal of the 2023 festival is to raise awareness of the heritage of Driftwood, specifically the Driftwood Community Center. Formerly a one-room schoolhouse, the group plans to revitalize the space as a community center.

The event will also feature an expansive artisan market with locally made goods and artwork. Community partners such as Bee Keepers, Master Naturalists, Friends of the Night Sky, Plateau Land & Wildlife Management, and Project Pomona/Elder Hill Farms have also been invited to participate. Families are welcome; children can visit animals from Fannies Farm Friends, enjoy face painting, and more. Vista Brewing is located at 13551 FM150 W in Driftwood. 19 years ago this month, a group of local volunteers came together to help the elderly of Dripping Springs with a simple goal: help the older generation while they continue to live independently at home. The Friends Foundation’s flagship program, Our Daily Bread, is a hot meal service for homebound elderly in the greater Dripping Springs community. Since the program’s inception, more than 60,000 meals have been delivered. TFF also provides additional services for people 60 and older in the Dripping Springs area. The Lifeline program provides medical alert devices that summon help by simply pushing a button on a bracelet or necklace. In addition, the Friends Foundation helps residents in their homes with financial assistance, smoke alarm installation, and other home maintenance programs. The foundation helps fund special programs and activities to enhance the lives of the residents in the Hill Country Nursing and Rehab center. It also provides dignity and comfort through its Butterflies are Free program, which serves those nearing the end of their lives in nursing homes. Dalgona White Russian WITH HILL COUNTRY HAPPY HOUR

This drink is perfect for the Home issue because it’s cozy and a little boozy. It’s perfect to sip on while curled up on the couch, either with a good book or Netflix binge. Dalgona coffee went viral on social media, and the easy technique really makes this drink special.

ingredients: For the dalgona coffee: • 2 tablespoons instant coffee • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar • 2 tablespoons water For the White Russian: • 1 part vodka (Goodnight Loving Vodka) • 1 part coffee liqueur (Revolution Spirits) • 1 part half and half

directions: Make the coffee: add all ingredients to a bowl, whisk until the coffee has a thick foamy texture that holds its shape. Fill a rocks glass with ice, add vodka and coffee liqueur. Stir to combine. Slowly add half and half. Spoon Dalgona Coffee on top.
