All You Need is (Local) Love Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about Love Local. This could mean several things, but to us, it was about sharing the love for our community. Sure, we aim to do that monthly, but this month hit a little differently. We wanted to dive into the roots of our town. There were endless names to explore, but the few we were able to cover in these pages will give you a deeper knowledge of who Dripping really is. We found Dripping Springs High School sweethearts who still call Dripping home, because after all, February is the month of love. We highlight our launch party fundraising event, where our community showed up in a big way, making us overflow with gratitude. An interview with Pam Owens from Destination Dripping Springs will give you insight into our visitors center. A local florist wows us with her gorgeous bouquets. Our cover photo family, the Hudsons, shows us a glimpse of not only local talent but also a local love story. As you fill your home with flowers, chocolates, and perhaps college basketball this month, let’s remember to show love to our town. Shop local, support our locally-owned boutiques, visit the farmers market, peruse resident art galleries. Buy local brews, hang at the local wineries, eat at our mom-and-pop restaurants, and share those experiences with us! A LASTING LOVE STORY

This month of love may have some pondering the question, is love for everyone, is the one I’m with “the one”? Let’s go over some lovely statistics. • The majority of people decide if they’re attracted to someone within the first 3 seconds of meeting them. • There is a 60% chance that your longdistance relationship will succeed. • Around 71% of people believe in love at first sight. • 48% of men fall in love at first sight. • About 33% of people who date online end up in a relationship. • Dating someone for 3 months will most likely turn into a serious relationship. • Some romantic relationship statistics indicate that holding hands with your partner relieves stress and pain. • Couples in healthy relationships have at least one fight per week. Having a partner may be for you, or may not be. These three couples found young love while attending Dripping Springs schools together. They went on to marry and raise their families in our remarkable town.

B R I A N P E A B O DY A N D T I F FA N Y ( B E C K E R ) PE A B ODY Brian Peabody and Tiffany (Becker) Peabody met while attending Dripping Elementary. Brian was in fourth grade, Tiffany third grade. Getting to know each other while riding the bus, Tiffany remembers Brian being a bit mischievous and getting kicked off the bus. Brian a track and football player and Tiffany a cheerleader, the duo began dating at ages 15 and 16 and it’s been history ever since. They graduated from Dripping Springs High School in 2006 and 2007 and now they reside in central Dripping with three active kids who attend Dripping Springs Elementary. The Peabodys will be celebrating their 10-year wedding anniversary this June.

MARVIN MYERS AND MERLENE (GLOSSON) MYERS

Matthew Shane Walker and Bonnie Jean (Mills) Walker met in Susan Burch’s biology class at Dripping Springs High School in 1985. They were 16 and 15 years old. With a graduating class of around 100, the pair played all the sports and did all the activities high school had to offer. Graduating classes of 1987 and 1988, the pair married when they were 21 and 19 years old. They still reside in Dripping and have a daughter and son who were also Dripping Springs High School graduates. In September they celebrated 33 years of marriage.

Marvin Myers and Merlene (Glosson) Myers met in first grade when they were six years old. At the time Dripping Springs had one school for all grades located on Mercer Street. They attended all twelve years of school together. It wasn’t until their senior year that they began dating. The pair are Dripping Springs graduating class of 1966! They remained close after graduating and married when they were 21. Marvin and Merlene reside on the west side of Dripping and have two sons who were also DSHS graduates. In September, they celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary.

Musical duo Chad and Natasha Hudson own Mercer Street hot spot, Hudson’s on Mercer. The Hudsons were teaching lessons from their home for two years, building out clientele until they couldn’t handle the number of students anymore without expanding. Chad knew the community was ready. They renovated and moved into a 4,000-square-foot building on Mercer Street where they now have a teaching staff of

12 talented musicians instructing approximately 250 music lessons per week. Being lifelong musicians, the pair met while performing in Nashville. It was there that they acquired major record deals, publishing deals, and production deals. A singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer extraordinaire, Chad was born and raised in South Austin and graduated from Dripping CONTINUED >

“We moved back to Dripping Springs approximately 10 years ago to bring our passion and our knowledge of the music business to this wonderful community, in hopes of spreading the power of music and the arts to our friends and family.”

Springs High school back when kindergarten through 12th grade were all on the same campus. Natasha is originally from Nashville. Also a singer and songwriter, Natasha has been a performer all her life. Chad would always talk about Drippin’ and Austin, and when Natasha finally came to visit, she fell in love, and not just with the Hill Country. The Hudsons are a blended family with their children’s ages ranging from three years to twenty-two. The family radiates talent, as each member has a musical gift. From singing, to guitar, ukulele, and piano, there is seemingly nothing they cannot make magic with. Although large, the Hudson family has a strong bond holding them together. They exude respect and love for one another. “Our family is why Hudson’s has come to be! Not only thanks to our kids but also thanks to the support of our parents, Bodie and Artie Hudson and Donna Noack, we were able to make our vision happen.” Although Chad and Natasha have had an enjoyable and exciting musical journey filled with traveling, singing, writing, and recording, it isn’t exactly a career where a young, growing family would thrive. With the encouragement from their parents, Hudson’s was the answer. The town hot spot is a stationary solution that blends their passions and features music lessons,

live music, recording, and refreshments! The goal was to create something the whole family could be involved in close to home, so there would never be another missed game or recital. “We moved back to Dripping Springs, Texas, approximately 10 years ago to bring our passion and our knowledge of the music business to this wonderful community, in hopes of spreading the power of music and the arts to our friends and family.” Aiming to spread the love of music to the community, Hudson’s offers everything from lessons in vocals, guitar, bass, piano, ukulele, drums, and more. All are taught by amazingly talented and encouraging teachers. If you’re not musically gifted stop in five nights a week to relax and enjoy live music. “Musically we have ‘Somethin’ for Everyone,’ by bringing top-notch live music to our town! Most importantly, we are a place where we can all come together as a community and be there for those in need,” says Natasha Hudson. On a clear December night, Dripping Springs City Lifestyle hosted a night of Hill Country glamour at The Terrace Club. The DS community came out in full force to celebrate the official launch of the publication and helped raise more than $13,000 for local charities. “It’s hard to find the words to accurately articulate the way we feel about the event. Amazing. Surreal. Overwhelming gratitude,” said Publisher Will Rivera. “Our sponsors were absolutely incredible—we're still receiving messages regarding the food, drinks, and venue!” The nattily attired crowd rolled into the magnificent venue in style, wearing sparkling gowns, shiny boots, and stylish hats. Elegant draping and chandeliers wowed partygoers who entered through a small fleet of luxury cars parked outside the front door, a nod to one of the magazine’s esteemed founding partners, Ferrari of Austin. Unique centerpieces from Rooted Treasures Succulents donned the tables. Guests enjoyed appetizers served by Marissa Fisk Catering as they strolled The Terrace Club’s impeccable grounds. The event highlighted the best in local food, spirits, and brews. In addition to appetizers, Chef Marissa Fisk provided a large selection of charcuterie. Hill Country Ranch Dining and Tavern catered an extensive buffet of Italian classics.

Vista Brewing’s Emily Parker and Kyle Barter paired a beet tartare bite with a grapefruit and tangerine barrel-aged golden ale. The soon-to-be-married Dripping Springs residents strive to grow 90% of Vista’s food onsite. We’re grateful to Kent and Karen Killough, owners of Vista Brewing for their sponsorship and support as founding partners. Acclaimed Camp Lucy restaurant Tillie’s presented a crowd-pleasing yellowfin tuna aguachile. “It’s a fresh take on something we do at the restaurant. We’re here to help people have fun,” said sous-chef Ryan

Partiers enjoyed fresh cocktails mixed by the pros from Easy Breezy Bartending. Local wine and spirit sponsors included Summer Revival Wine Co., Vista Brewing, Duchman Winery, Desert Door Sotol, Canteen Spirits, Treaty Oak Distilling, and Garrison Brothers Distillery, to name a few. floor filled up as guests whirled and twirled to country and rock standards performed by one of our area’s best local groups, the Above the Law Band. Although the evening was full of mingling, fashion statements, and food, we best not forget Dripping Springs City Lifestyle’s mission to spotlight local charities. Thanks to donations from two dozen local sponsors and abundant community generosity, the event raised money for three local organizations working to support children across the area: the Watch Me Fly Foundation, Hill Country Rally for Kids, and Foster Village.

“The desired and achieved outcome of this event was to network, say ‘thank you’ to partners, and to bring awareness to a few nonprofits we believe in," said Rivera. Leaders from each charity had the chance to speak to the assembled crowd on behalf of their causes. Michael Uzuanis from Watch Me Fly spoke about his group’s mission. “We are creating a community center. The foundation will benefit children in Dripping Springs and surrounding areas, helping them build the confidence they need to navigate their way through life to be successful people.”

“We want to give back. This is a great town, but I promise you there are kids in need, and we don’t want to forget about them,” said Hill Country Rally for Kids founder Cody Reeves. “We want to give assistance to any kids that need help.” KC Richardson spoke about the Foster Village organization’s three pillars: to equip, connect, and advocate for children in the foster care system. “We walk alongside families working hard to have their kids back in their homes.” The raffle items included jewelry from Liz James Designs, local staycations, restaurant and bar packages, and even a trip, generously sponsored by Kim and Whit Hanks of Camp Lucy, to London with luxury accommodations for 4 nights and 5 days at the Old Bell Hotel, thought to be the oldest hotel in England. Editor Kristen Hafner celebrated all of the support for the magazine’s launch. “The overwhelming sense of gratefulness for what this publication has turned into in such a short amount of time is a testament to this community’s support and desire to raise up one another. The success of the launch party brought us all to tears of gratitude.” Thanks again to all who donated and attended this memorable evening to celebrate the best of the Dripping Springs lifestyle. THIS REFRESHING COCKTAIL IS CRAFTED USING LOCAL SPIRITS AND SYRUP.

Ingredients: • 2 ½ ounces pomegranate juice • 2 ounces Goodnight Loving Vodka • ½ ounce falernum • 1 ounce Blackberry Lavender syrup from Terra Verde Foods • ½ ounce simple syrup • ½ ounce lime juice • 1 egg white

Method: • Add ingredients to shaker. • Shake. Add ice. Shake a couple minutes. • Strain into coupe glass. • Garnish with sugared blackberries.

Dripping in Petals, a sustainable small-cut flower farm in Dripping Springs, offers bouquets and subscription delivery services in Travis and Hays counties. Started in 2019, the all-organic farm run by Jaiden Aeilts, who is a graduate of the 2020 workshop by Magnolia network star Floret Flowers, produces locally grown plants free from flower food, sprays, and pesticides. “I want people to experience where their flowers come from and to understand the farmer’s relationship with the community. The flowers are grown sustainably and with love, not in a factory,” Jaiden said. The one-woman boutique farm has two growing seasons and despite the trialand-error nature of soil health and figuring out what grows well in this region and when, her subscription delivery services have grown from 8 clients in 2020 to 25 clients in 2022. Delivery is currently available to Dripping, Driftwood, South Austin, Wimberly, and San Marcos. She offers this advice for local gardeners: Don’t give up in the summer! Stick to routine watering and garden when it’s cool out. Jaiden’s preferred flowers for the Hill Country include zinnias, which bloom all summer long, and basil, one of her favorite greeneries to add to bouquets. She also recommends marigolds as they make a vibrant, full bouquet that is sure to impress. Bouquets can be bought online and at Abby Jane Bakeshop and Summer Revival Wine Co. The subscription delivery service is available for purchase on her website and would make a thoughtful gift this Valentine’s Day for loved ones to enjoy throughout the year. In December 2012, Lori Green walked into Mazama for the first time to meet a friend for coffee. She remembers enjoying the environment of the coffee shop and feeling as though Mazama would be a great place to work. So, on her way out, she asked an employee if they were hiring. She applied, was interviewed by the founder, Vicky Lewis, and soon started working as a part-time barista. She never would have imagined this part-time job would lead to her falling in love with the shop, customers, and community and—ten years later— owning the business. Over the years, Lori’s part-time job as a barista transformed into a full-time manager position. As she poured a decade of her life into the company, learning the ins and outs of the business, scheduling employees, managing the baristas, ensuring everything ran smoothly, and providing an overall high-quality experience for all

who stepped foot through the door, she became a welcoming familiar face to the community. When the founders decided they wanted to sell the business in 2022, they had only one person in mind who they could trust to carry on Mazama’s legacy. When Vicky presented Lori with the opportunity to become the owner of the company, it took her by surprise. “Owning the shop wasn’t even in the cards for me,” Lori said, “but Vicky knew how much I loved the shop and the community it has created in Dripping Springs.” Lori and her husband, Darren, took ownership of the business in September 2022, nearly 10 years after she had been hired on staff as a barista. Located on Dripping Spring’s historic Mercer Street, Mazama provides the community with a variety of coffee beans sourced from around the world, all of which are roasted locally in the shop. Mazama also provides a wide range of baked goods and

sandwiches made in-house. Although the company is best known for its high-quality coffee and food, the aspect of the coffee shop Lori most cherishes is its ability to form community. “Mazama is a place for people to come together and a place to feel welcome,” Lori said. “We want our customers to feel like they belong; like they are valued. We have made so many lifetime connections with many of our customers. Mazama is really theirs. They have made it what it is by continuing to support us with their business and their friendship.” Lori plans on continuing the founders’ legacy by building upon the space they have created for the community to come together. “I want Mazama to continue to be a staple in this community as a place for people to gather and to connect. This shop belongs to the community and I want to always make sure that we honor it in all we do.”

Starting in the architectural plan phase, go through cabinet plans so that your appliances, spices, pots, pans, bowls, and food have a home. From depths, widths, heights, and style, we design to fit the needs of your space so that it matches your aesthetic and your items. 2. Gone are the days when we have all of our appliances and utensils out on display. Plan your pantry or kitchen cabinets to have appliance towers, spice drawers, and utensil holders with plugs and pull-out shelves. 3. Incorporating a drink or coffee station makes for easy entertaining. Placing this away from the kitchen workspaces allows guests to serve themselves without congesting the kitchen or interrupting the cook. 4. Organize your food storage so that it is easily accessible and maximizes your space. This can be done with deep drawers and labeled food containers. Pam Owens PRESIDENT AND CEO OF DRIPPING SPRINGS VISITORS BUREAU As we discussed our content ideas for the February love local issue it was a no-brainer for us to highlight Pam Owens in this issue. Pam has lived in Dripping Springs for more than 40 years. She raised her son here and now he is raising his four children here alongside his wife. Pam has been a staple in the Dripping community for many years and most recently has served as the President/ CEO of the nonprofit Dripping Springs Visitors Bureau. Destination Dripping Springs, the marketing arm of the bureau, highlights opportunities for visitors to experience wineries, breweries, distilleries, dark skies, shops, great natural beauty, and much more. Destination DS programs include the Wedding Capital of Texas®, including two wedding showcases each year; Dripping with Taste® Trail; the Dripping Springs Brewers Festival; and the Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival. Pam has seen a multitude of changes here since her first visit in 1982. Despite the growth, Pam believes we’re still a community and still have a small-town feel. The heart of Dripping Springs is to take care of its own. She loves going into businesses and seeing people she knows, getting a hug and catching up on their families. She opened Your Growing Child, a childcare center, in 1986, started Print Plus in 2001, and went to work for the Chamber and now the Visitors Bureau in 2012. She’s sat on boards or committees including the Friends of the Pound House, DS Community Foundation, Chamber of Commerce, Hill Country Care, the Phillips Cemetery Association, and her churches. She’s had the privilege to be very involved with community families from birth to death and with their businesses. Pam encourages us all to check out the granite monument on Mercer explaining the actual dripping springs located off Mercer and to pick up a copy of the Explore Historic Dripping Springs brochure at the Visitors Center for a walking tour of downtown. It also has a wealth of information for residents and visitors including an event calendar and an app for your phone.

Historic Drip HISTORY AND HERITAGE LIVE ON

In the early 1850s, it was the “Old Three”—the Pound, Moss, and Wallace families—who helped bring Dripping Springs to prominence. John Moss became the new settlement’s first postmaster in 1857, necessitating a town name. His wife Nannie is credited with officially naming it for the lush, fern-covered, limestone ledges on a branch of the local aquifer that dripped water. Then a known gathering place for the indigenous Tonkawa tribe, this spot today is situated in the heart of Dripping Springs, near the west end of Mercer Street, the town’s historic main street. Located 30 miles from Austin, the capital of Texas, Dripping Springs is a place where the history and heritage of early Texas lives on.
