Amid massive growth we felt compelled to step up to help sustain the community vibe of Dripping Springs and Driftwood. Our magazine will make every effort to highlight the most positive aspects of living here. We hope that these pages will be your guide to all things Drippin’ for years to come! Karen and I live here, work here, and are raising our three boys here. Our oldest, Isaac just graduated from Dripping Springs HS and is off to A&M in the Fall. Followed by Mr. Cruz – the soon to be third grader and then our tiny two-year old, Zane William. My creative spirit crept in at an early age. I remember drawing NKOTB sketches during church. Jordan was my fave, no judgement please. From there it was collages made of old magazines, because that's what we had for entertainment pre-internet; magazines! I moved on to high school newspaper and yearbook, photography, blogs, websites, and now magazine editor and photographer. I'm also a mom, wife and active member of the community. The name Dos Olivos Market was inspired by the family ranch that was named after Rebecca's grandfather who was gifted two olive trees. The name brought their vision to life. Central Texas Veterans are getting a permanent retreat and resource base at Patriots’ Hall of Dripping Springs (PHDS) Austin philanthropists John Paul and Eloise DeJoria have given $1 million from their JP’s Peace, Love & Happiness Foundation to build the PHDS Meeting Hall and PHDS Wellness Center focusing on Veterans’ health needs and VA Claims assistance. Patriots’ Hall of Dripping Springs welcomes all veterans and their families. Patriots’ Hall is a 10-acre permanent retreat and resource base for Veterans and their families to connect and find support. Their Hill Country retreat will feature a 7,100 sq. ft. Main Gathering Hall for therapeutic workshops, employment and educational seminars, vet-to-vet mentoring and social activities, a 1200 sq. ft. Meeting House for the local VFW and American Legion Post meetings, a Wellness Center with VA claims assistance, a fishing pond, playscape, vegetable garden, obstacle course, ADA walking trails and much more. Patriots’ Hall was founded by Kathryn Chandler, wife of actor Kyle Chandler, and Dripping Springs Volunteer of the Year Dr. Mary Jane Hetrick. Kathryn was inspired by her dad, a Vietnam veteran now living in a veterans’ home in California.

“While brainstorming our mission, our Board took an in-depth survey of veterans’ needs and we applied this survey to every aspect of our design and build,” explained Mary Jane Hetrick. “In fact, the majority of the PHDS board and advisory board are veterans. And always will be.” One such veteran who has helped build this community is Navy Vet Shorty Barnett. “John Paul is a true patriot,” Shorty said. “Our VFW and American Legion Posts have been waiting for 35 years for a place to finally call home and John Paul has made our dream a reality. I thank him from the bottom of my heart for sponsoring the PHDS Meeting House.” John Paul is a proud veteran – he joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 18 and spent two years on the U.S.S. Hornet. In 2006, John Paul was appointed Admiral in the Texas Navy by the Governor of Texas and the Secretary of State. In 2012, he received the Lone Sailor Award from the U.S. Navy Memorial which is given to Sea Service veterans who have excelled with distinction in their civilian careers while exemplifying the Navy’s core values of honor, courage and commitment. “A short distance from my home in Austin is this wonderful veteran’s hall,” said John Paul. “All too often, many of CONTINUED >

The Patriots’ Hall of Dripping Springs was built to assist and connect veterans to what they need to know for their health and benefits and, more importantly, to provide a place to hang out with one another. We are social animals and we function much better in groups with the support of others. I learned this in my time in the Navy.” When asked what he hopes for the future of PHDS, John Paul said, “Patriots’ Hall will provide a happy environment for those who should all be honored for putting their lives on the line.” Kathryn and Mary Jane would also like to express their deep appreciation and gratitude to Hank and Lyssa Seale. While all funds have been raised by the local community - the financial backing provided by Hank and Lyssa enabled the Patriots' Hall team to have the courage and endurance to expand their vision to meet the needs of all Veterans and their families. Hank and Lyssa - your example of generosity brings honor to all that have served our great country. Kyle Fernandez Construction – also known as “Ridgecrest Custom Homes Ventures, LLC” officially launched in 2017 but the story didn’t start there. Kyle Fernandez cut his teeth in construction as a teenager working in the mission field in the 1990’s as an active member of a Christian youth movement known as “World Changers”. Kyle spent his teen summers as a volunteer across the United States gutting and rebuilding homes for people and communities in need. Throughout college Kyle was the resident handyman, building custom bunks for dormmates and worked his way up the ladder in the restaurant industry to pay the bills. At the age of 27, Kyle left the restaurant industry and entered into sales where he continued to excel. Growing companies, breaking records, there was seemingly nothing Kyle could not accomplish, yet something was missing. He had recently married his wife Nicole and they had a strong desire to start a family. However, being the leader of sales for a global supply chain company came at a cost of time. Kyle decided to resign, take a leap of faith, and go back to the industry that always gave him the most joy – construction. Alongside Kyle is his wife, Nicole. A licensed realtor who specializes in the Hill Country and Greater Austin areas. Although a realtor, Nicole says her two most important roles are being a wife and mother to Tillie Sue.

Feeling called to serve the community, Kyle and Nicole have embarked on a soul-filling journey together as foster parents. With the guidance of mentors and founders of Foster Village - Nick and Chrystal Smith - they have grown in wisdom and passion to serve children in need from the greater community. Native Texans, the Fernandez family moved out of Austin to Dripping Springs in 2018 and have fallen in love with the Hill Country. “We wouldn’t choose to live anywhere else”. Fun Fact: As a kid - Kyle's dream was to be Maverick; an F14 Tomcat Fighter Pilot. He's watched the original Top Gun so many times he can quote the movie word for word - start to finish. He actually had flight suits and a bomber jacket just like Maverick. Needless to say - Kyle was one of the first to watch Top Gun: Maverick when it hit theaters earlier this year. Mission Our mission is simple…..to build a Community Center in Dripping Springs, TX where we will institute programs that will tackle the issues of learning disabilities and mental/emotional health, so our children will develop the skills necessary to overcome the increasingly difficult task of navigating today’s social and educational environments. We will teach them to “Spread their Wings and FLY!” Many of today’s youth are plagued with the condition of emotional and mental weakness. All of our programs will carry the common purpose of teaching methods to build the emotional and mental strength required to successfully navigate our world with success, happiness and wellbeing. In honor of Cael Uzuanis' birthday - every year on February 10th, starting in 2022 we will announce the winners of our Watch Me Fly Scholarship. This scholarship is intended to give those with exceptional potential, drive and character the financial boost needed to set them on their way to greatness. These individuals will be chosen by the board of directors. 100% of all donations go towards our programs and scholarships. We will always accept volunteer help when appropriate and compensate the community center staff members in a fair manner.
