DRIPPING CLASSIC CAR COLLECTORS WITH DREAMS FOR THE COMMUNITY

ARTICLE BY KRISTEN HAFNER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREG GIRTON

Full Speed Ahead

Megan and Cole with a ‘69 Plymouth GTX and ‘60s Firestone sign in front of their Speeding Springs property

Sister-brother duo Megan and Cole Salyards are no strangers to the auto industry. Growing up their family owned over 500 body shops across the nation. Car expertise is in their blood. When they initially came to Dripping Springs, the goal was to open a Hill Country wedding venue. Megan chose a beautiful piece of land off Creek Road with rolling hills as the perfect destination. Soon realizing what Dripping craved but was lacking, the siblings pivoted and made the decision to turn their wedding-venue dream into a car lover’s paradise. Swapping floor-to-ceiling windows for rolling garage doors, their 9,000-square-feet, impeccably constructed timber wedding venue is turning into the ultimate garage complete with car turntables. With a passion for buying and selling classic cars, Megan and Cole have managed the sale of everything from Chevelles to Mustangs. Their garage is full of awe-worthy metal, including the one-of-a-kind 1975 Ford Bronco featured on our cover. They don’t want their dream to be kept to themselves. “Enough having car shows in random barren parking lots. We want this to be a place for the community to enjoy,” says Megan. Check them out on Instagram @speedingsprings.

Regenerate your Health RAISING THE BAR FOR NATURAL HEALING ARTICLE BY MICHAEL KINNEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTEN HAFNER In the dictionary, there is a multitude of definitions for the word regenerate. But when a family of doctors was deciding on what to call their therapy office, the definition that best explained why they were going with “Regenerate” was “bringing forth a new and more vigorous life.” That is the end goal for clients who come to Regenerate. “We believe that the power that makes the body also heals the body, and we have several services to help your body heal and function the way it was designed to,” said Regenerate co-owner Dr. Chae Tracy. Regenerate is run by Dr. Chae Tracy, his wife, Dr. Monya Tracy, and his sister, Dr. Breca Tracy. Each has their particular field of expertise that allows them to meet almost any need they are confronted with. Chae’s primary focus is family wellness with an emphasis on the specific correction of the atlas and the body’s proper posture. Monya specializes in children’s chiropractic, and Breca is the director of science and operations at Regenerate. “At Regenerate, we strive to provide the best customer service and care possible,” Breca said. “Our goal is to help as many people as possible, as naturally as possible. We are a results-driven business. It is our passion to help our patients achieve their goals with our services. We offer therapies and products that traditional medical offices typically do not. will be different and so will your offerings. Keeping our community healthy and happy is important.” Chae, Breca, and Monya built Regenerate in response to the growing need for natural solutions amid the proliferation of unnatural substances being used throughout society. Regenerate was created to be a different option for those who want to live better lives. “Let’s be honest, the soils are depleted for a number of reasons, and the grocery store looks different than when you were a kid with more processed foods and more GMOs,” Chae said. “So, at some level, you need to supplement what your body is not getting naturally. not getting any younger: yes, gravity will always win. We have many age-defying and biohacking tools to help you naturally.” Located in the thriving heart of Dripping Springs, Regenerate has been taking care of residents and visitors for the past five years. “Who wants to fight traffic and drive to Austin when you can keep it local at Regenerate?” Chae asked. “Believe it or not, people drive out to Drip to see us instead of driving into Austin. We provide a different experience because we truly care and our patients and community are important to us.” Originally a stem-cell center, the familyowned business made the move to provide joint therapies during the past three years. Regenerate’s joint therapy service is a revolutionary therapy option for people suffering from inflammation, reduced mobility, sports injuries, tissue and ligament damage, or chronic pain. It is a natural, immune-evasive barrier to cushion and support damaged tissues. Often this therapy leaves the patient feeling relief after only one injection. This cutting-edge therapy combines the best components from all the latest noninvasive therapy options into one. According to the Tracys, Regenerate’s regenerative injectable is collected from mothers who have donated their umbilical cord tissue after delivering a child by c-section birth. Products from donated human tissue are deemed qualified for transplantation by the American Association of Tissue Banks–recovery agency used by Regenerate’s laboratory supplier. As required by the FDA, pre-screening lab tests clear the donor as free from risk factors and active infections of applicable communicable diseases. Along with their regenerative therapy, Regenerate’s list of services and treatments includes vitamin therapy and HydraFacial.

“We’ve added an aesthetic brand including HydraFacial, custom facials, laser resurfacing, radiofrequency (RF) microneedling, and medical-grade skin care,” Breca said. “We have also added our vitamin brand, helping people with deficiencies and providing a more bioavailable version of vitamins to our community. Additionally, we expanded into female wellness, providing options for women to help their bodies get back to functioning the way they used to, either post-delivery and/or with age. Cosmetic injections, such as fillers and Botox, are something we never considered bringing on, but as we have grown, we’ve done so to meet ongoing patient requests. We are often referred to as a one-stop shop.” Regenerate clientele spans the spectrum. Athletes with injuries or in training, overworked and stressed parents, businesswomen and men, and teens with acne can all find the services they need. Or as Breca describes it, the whole community. “Serving our local community is key. Providing services our community needs is our passion,” Breca said. “You ask, we deliver. People travel from all over the country for our regenerative services, and as for our additional services we have quite a demographic of clients. We serve local athletes (middle school to adults) that might be preparing for a big game, tournament, or competition or unfortunately those that might have injured themselves.

Our bodywork is always a great way to start, understanding the root of where the pain is coming from is key.” One of the many ways the Tracys have made Regenerate stand out from the pack is their ability to custom-build treatment plans to fit each individual patient. “We have always strived to not only be at the forefront of innovation but also convenience,” Breca said. “One of our newest services is what we categorize as bodywork. Bodywork is a culmination of therapeutic modalities that our licensed medical massage therapist utilizes to help the injured, to work out the stress, and get rid of and get to the root of chronic pain. Each client will receive a customized approach tailored to meet their needs and achieve their goals. Common things we’ve seen bodywork be effective with are plantar fasciitis, golfer’s elbow, weightlifter’s shoulder, sciatica, and frozen shoulder, to name a few. It’s also a common technique helping people with chronic tension and pain in their neck, head, and shoulders stemming from car accidents, scoliosis, stress, or overuse.” According to Chae, it’s that ability to specifically tailor their services for each client that makes Regenerate special. “Each person has individual goals that will be customized,” Chae said. “Some people choose health, wellness, and being proactive as a lifestyle while others choose to be reactive and just want a short-term fix to feel better. Regardless of your goals, we are here to serve you and your body’s needs.” D ECEMBER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/D RI P PI N G S P R I N G S

snowflake salt dough ornaments OLD TRADITIONS WITH MODERN DAY TRENDS

ARTICLE BY KRISTEN HAFNER PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES Salt dough is a simple yet beautiful way to create a homemade memory with your family this holiday season. The use of salt dough is nothing new. Your children may have brought home similar projects from school, causing you to ask, “What did you make? It’s beautiful,” while keeping a straight face as you try to navigate what exactly they intended it to be. This basic recipe has made a comeback in recent years and for good reason: it requires only three pantry ingredients, and the festive end result will last for years to come. Traditions that are tangible help us relive those memories and build upon them each year. Snowflake salt dough ornaments are the perfect tradition to incorporate. I hope you follow along to make some yourself this holiday season.

SALT DOUGH RECIPE

Makes about 12 ornaments.

SUPPLIES NEEDED

INGREDIENTS

• Rolling Pin • Snowflake Cookie Cutters (optional) • Plastic or Metal Straw

• • • • •

Cookie Sheet Parchment Paper Lettered Stamps Acrylic Sealer Baker’s Twine

• • • •

1 cup All-Purpose White Flour ½ cup Table Salt ½ cup Water (give or take) 4 oz White Acrylic Paint

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Mix together flour and salt. Add ¼ cup water and white paint (if you want a white dough; otherwise, you may leave it out). Stir to mix. If needed, slowly add more water until you reach a pizza dough consistency. Finally, remove dough from the bowl and knead on a floured surface until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Add more flour if too sticky; add more water if too dry. 2. To make ornaments, use a rolling pin to roll dough to ¼ to ½ inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to create snowflake shapes. Use a straw to poke a hole at the top of each snowflake to allow a space to thread your twine after baking. 3. Place ornaments on parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 hours until dry. Flip ornaments every 30 minutes for a faster bake. 4. Once cooled, add decorative touches with lettered stamps, acrylic paint, or Sharpie markers. Finally, spray one side of the ornament with an acrylic seal. Let dry, flip, and spray the other side. 5. Once dried completely, thread twine through the hole created before baking. Hang from your tree or add to your gift boxes as gift tags.

ARTICLE BY KRISTEN HAFNER PHOTOGRAPHY BY RACHEL RAY + KRISTEN HAFNER

Jamie Ivey during her podcast

Podcast host, bestselling author, inspirational speaker, and talk show host are some of the main accolades we can put next to Jamie Ivey’s name, but mom to four teens and wife to a pastor top the list. Austin residents since 2008, the Ivey family moved to Dripping Springs in late 2015. Seeking a great school district, some land, and peace and quiet, they fell in love with all the Hill Country has to offer. They knew this is where they wanted to raise their four children. Jamie’s career blossomed in 2011 when she won a radio contest earning her a position co-hosting with Bob Cole on 98.1 KVET. Being the light she is, Jamie’s personality and love for others shine through her love of writing, speaking, and inspiring others. The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey podcast launched in 2014. A weekly roundtable discussion, The Happy Hour aims to connect with women and encourage them throughout life’s journey.

“There is nothing I love more in my job than using this platform to uplift and support other women.” — JAMIE IVEY

Talent runs in the Ivey family. Often teaming up, Jamie and husband, Aaron, are mentors through storytelling and being real-life examples. Aaron is the Pastor of Worship and Creativity at Austin Stone Community Church. The singer-songwriter, along with Jamie, co-wrote the book, Complement. With a heart for giving and celebrating women, the Ivey team puts on the annual, “Holiday Gift Guide.” In 2016 Jamie began the Gift Guide to highlight small or woman-owned businesses, ethicallymade products, companies with giveback models, and cause- or faith-based companies. Launching right before the online holiday rush of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Jamie uses her platform to uplift and support small businesses and invites others to do the same. This year’s Holiday Gift Guide Live event was nothing short of magical. Taking place at the Lone Oak Barn in Round Rock, the venue was donned with holiday décor, had booths for shopping, goodie bags, and, best of all, amazing company. Jamie along with her humorous co-hosts, Toni Collier and Candace Payne, put on a feelgood show the audience will be craving to attend again in 2023.

“There is nothing I love more in my job than using this platform to uplift and support other women,” said Jamie. The brands featured in this year’s Holiday Gift Guide include: Our Spare Change, Dear Heart, Mercy House Global, Elevate, Ramble and Company, Starfish Project, Revell and Baker Publishing Group, Dwell Differently, From Scratch Farm, Vickery Trading Company, Freeleaf, and Mended. On Friday, November 18, the Holiday Gift Guide will be live on jamieivey.com, as well as the episode of “The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey” podcast with audio from the live October 2 event. A video will also be available on Jamie Ivey’s YouTube channel. In the spirit of the season, I asked Jamie about some of their Ivey family holiday traditions. “A tradition we have is the kids opening a gift, always pajamas, on Christmas Eve,” Jamie says, “Our favorite tradition as a family is going to the ‘Elf’ quote-along at Alamo Drafthouse every December. This is something we’ve done for almost a decade, and we all look forward to it each year.” Stay up to date with Jamie by following along on Instagram at @jamieivey and @iveymedia. Danyale Keim on preparing the perfect guest space

30

H OST IN G T IP S | HOM E + DE S I GN

HOLIDAY HOME AWAY FROM HOME PREPARING THE PERFECT GUEST SPACE A few simple items or tweaks to your room will make all the difference when preparing a space for your house guests. 1. Cozy linens – Use layers of bedding; people like different sleeping temperatures. By providing sheets, a duvet, and a blanket, your guest can decide how many layers they want to sleep with. Using a down duvet gives an extra feeling of luxury. 2. Toiletries – Make sure to stock the bathroom with useable goodies for your guests, just as if they were at a hotel. New toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, hotel-size shampoo and conditioner, air freshener, candle, body wash, lotion, Q-tips, cotton balls, tissues, and toilet paper should be on hand. 3. Space – Clear your clutter; make sure furniture surfaces have room for your guests to lay their personal items. Closets should have ample room for suitcases and hanging items. Let your guests know what storage areas are available so they don’t feel they are invading your privacy.

4. Inviting decor – Depersonalizing the space will help guests feel more at home, and less like a visitor. Achieve this by adding artwork as opposed to family pictures. 5. Accessible lighting – Provide a bedside lamp. This is good for reading and can be turned on and off easily without getting up. Keeping furniture away from windows and the use of light-color window coverings will give the room natural light, helping guests not to feel confined. 6. Electronics – Providing phone charger access, a noise machine, and Wi-Fi information on the bedside table is a small gesture that goes a long way. 7. Large mirror – Hang a large mirror; not only will it help the room appear bigger, but it adds decorative appeal. You will help guests see what they are wearing from head to toe. With the holidays upon us, there is usually at least one dress-up occasion, and this will reassure them they are looking their best. It also helps the room appear bigger.

Foster Village | Fostering hope, one family at a time

Small Town. Community. Family. These monikers describe the heart behind Foster Village, a local organization that aims to come alongside children and families in the child welfare system and show them they are not alone. In 2014, the Smith family had the privilege of not only adopting their precious foster daughter but also welcoming their daughter’s birth mother, a strong woman who grew up in the foster care system herself, into their family. After hearing about the harsh realities of a broken child welfare system and seeing the struggles of kids who age out of the system, Chrystal Smith founded Foster Village to support families and address the root causes that created the system in the first place. “During our time fostering, we saw the needs up close and knew that if the community was aware of the adversity that these children and families were facing, they would want to do something about it,” Chrystal explained. Due to burnout and lack of support, most foster families don’t make it a year. Conversely, 85% of people who are not foster parents say they care about vulnerable children and want to help. “We set out to bridge the gaps between kids and families in crisis and a caring community ready to help,” Smith affirms.

G IV IN G BAC K | LOCA L SERVI CE S

“Once we connected those dots, the community stepped up in ways that continue to blow us away.” According to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, there are over 47,000 children in the foster care system across the state, 500 of those in Hays County alone. While these numbers are shocking, Foster Village serves over 2,000 kids per year. Families can receive free clothing, gear, toiletries, and other basic necessities, and are connected to other foster families and resources to offer encouragement, an important step to ensure families are strengthened and empowered to continue fostering. Though we grasp this need locally, it’s a national pandemic. Foster Village created an affiliate program that permits their model and materials to be replicated in other cities, which has allowed their “village” to multiply. With national news features and recognition as an award-winning approach, they maintain that our children deserve more than a system. They deserve a village! Interested in helping? Volunteer! From on-call needs, babysitting, sorting/organizing materials and even planning their annual gala, they need your help! In addition, you can find the “Foster Village Austin Swap” page on Facebook or donate via their website. FB: @fostervillageaustinswap

O PE N H OU SE | R EAL ESTATE

ARTICLE BY MICAH WIENER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY MIKLER

A DR I PPI NG SPR I NG S P OW E R C OU PL E After 17 years in Dripping Springs, Mark and France Clausen have a lot of reasons to be grateful. “We often told our friends back in California that we moved into a Norman Rockwell painting. It’s amazing,” France said. The couple met in 1993 and married in 1996. As partners and teammates, they quickly dove into real estate development. Serving others came naturally for France. Her parents worked in real estate, and she earned a master’s degree in social work. Mark overcame a difficult childhood and enrolled in the Navy. He achieved an extraordinary level of success, serving as a Navy SEAL for seven years. After his time with the SEALs, he continued to serve as a police officer until an accident badly injured his knee and left him medically retired. In 2005, after more than a decade of successful real estate deals, the Clausen's decided to leave California. They wanted a small-town environment to raise their young children, Maya and Griffin. After extensive research, they picked the Austin area. They toured communities for several days before their last stop, Dripping Springs. Instantly, they fell in love with the rolling hills and huge oaks. They bought the first house they saw in the Polo Club neighborhood. They’ve been there ever since. “We are grateful that we had the ability to slow our lives down, allowing our kids to be kids and grow up at their own pace. We loved the sense of

community that Dripping Springs provided not only to us but to our children,” France said. Like those magnificent oaks, their family grew. And so did Dripping. As Mark told me, “Growth is inevitable. You might as well embrace it.” The San Diego real estate market imploded, jeopardizing the Clausen’s retirement plans. Suddenly facing an uncertain financial future, they embraced the growth around them. They shared a passion for the community, real estate, and teamwork. The couple built their own company using France’s marketing and personal skills and the resilience learned from Mark’s SEAL training. Together, they grew their passions into the top-producing Veritas Group. “This town continues to have a deep sense of community. We are grateful to headquarter our business here and work with incredible partners and clients that share our love for Dripping Springs,” France said. They also taught their children the importance of teamwork through athletics. Maya excelled in volleyball, winning the state championship at Dripping Springs High School. Mark spent five football seasons coaching Griffin, who also won a state title at Regents School of Austin. France credits the community with their children’s success. “When our kids were small, they thrived in school. From Dripping Springs Youth Sports Association football to Girl Scouts and volleyball, our kids always knew someone was looking out for them.”

The Clausens’ holiday traditions include Christmas on Mercer and a visit to the PEC lights in Johnson City. They also host an annual Veritas holiday party. Mark and France feel so grateful to serve the community and the town that’s given their family so much.

The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

Let There Be Light ARTICLE BY CHRISTINA THOMPSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY JORDAN MAYWALD

Maywald Family property

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas across the 3.5acre Maywald property. From a 17-foot-tall Santa Claus to vintage lawn decor collected from across the country, the Maywald Christmas Light Display is a gem tucked in the neighborhood behind FP Legacy Landscaping off Highway 290 and Shallowford Road. While admission is free, the Maywalds collect donations to the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Central and South Texas. Each year, 24-year-old Jordan Maywald adds something new for visitors to discover, including a new star for each wish granted. This year, they also added a new 15-foot fiberglass snowman. “Dripping Springs makes up about 80 percent of our visitors,” said Maywald. Thanks to the community’s generosity, the display has raised nearly $200,000 so far and granted 27 wishes for children.

Located at 10505 Twilight Vista, the display is open through December 28th. Follow Maywald Christmas Light Display on Facebook and Instagram.
