INTERMOUNTAIN HEALTHCARE GIFTS $15M FOR UNIVERSITY OF UTAH MEDICAL SCHOOL University of Utah has received a $15 million gift from Intermountain Healthcare to fund a new planned medical education building, replacing the venerable 52-year-old U School of Medicine building. Intermountain Healthcare’s senior management team and board bestowed the gift as an expression of gratitude for the university's commitment to providing high-quality medical education in the state of Utah and surrounding region and for educating the majority of physicians who practice here. The 52-year-old building is outdated, seismically unsound and must be torn down in the coming

years. The design for a new education complex will be a new home for medical students and include programming designed to catalyze health care innovation and education. The new building is part of a larger health sciences campus transformation and is one of the most ambitious building projects ever to take place at the University of Utah. The project includes an ambulatory care complex, the Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital and the Medical Education and Discovery building. Construction is expected to begin in 2019

DESIGNER JULIE MEESE SEEKS TO CREATE BEAUTIFUL HOMES HERE IN UTAH AND THE WORLD BEYOND. At her Draper store—which she operates with daughters, Jasmine, Brynn and Halle—Julie brings 30 years of interior design experience into selecting the furnishings, accessories and objects that help her Utah clients get the right look for their home and lifestyle. A collection of vintage finds, large-format artwork, natural items such as driftwood and succulents, all blend in with the fun, funky and refurbished. There’s also an international feel to the store, from the items— such as Gypset Travel books and African tribal baskets—to Julie's philosophy on the importance of making a house feel like a home—anywhere. “We are a give-back store,” she says. A portion of Humble Dwellings’ proceeds goes toward better housing and living conditions for people around the world. Julie and her daughters helped provide school supplies for St. John students after Hurricane Irma destroyed classrooms. Currently, they’re raising funds to build an orphanage dormitory in Uganda through the Bisikwa Project and plan to visit this year to build beds. “We love to help people here improve their own homes, but we want to help others [around the world] do the same," she says. GET THE LOOK For the office that Julie Meese and her design team at Humble Dwellings designed for Salt Lake Parade of Homes, they used a playful color palette to give the room a family feel and create a space that would be a great working office for a mom.

The framed moon phase prints ($270 each), the focal point of the room, were an inspiration in the office design and the designers pulled in different pink tones through the rug, a signature Anastasia rug ($1,022) from Humble Dwellings. They then added the dark blue velvet exposed back chairs ($890) to complement the darker cool tones in the rug.

To avoid a cold modern feel, they used the antique crank table desk ($2,533) and the farrow bookcases ($1,750) to bring in rustic elements to warm up the space. Succulent arrangements,

t h e k i n d n e s s d i r e c t o r Megan McClannan Reardon MUSICAL THEATRE DIRECTOR, COPA DRAPER Megan McClannan Reardon is still on cloud nine after taking her musical theater students to Carnegie Hall to learn from and perform with Broadway stars. Her students excelled, which doesn’t surprise her since their dedication impresses her. But there is more to musical theater than practice and performances. Megan strives to promote kindness in her classes. In the theater industry, she says, there is too much harsh critique of others. “If I can create a positive atmosphere and create humans who are kind, supportive and responsible, people will want to hire them, and they’ll want to work with each other,” she says.

Michelle Mulcahy ACADEMIC DIRECTOR, AMERICAN PREP ACADEMY DRAPER CAMPUS As a former teacher, Michelle Mulcahy appreciates that teachers invest a lot of themselves into their work and need support. Now, as director, her job is to provide that support through training, communication and by being that “calm presence.” Michelle values the importance of education and finds being on the administrative side equally rewarding because she says by taking care of teachers, students, families and the entire community benefit. “We find amazing people who care about kids, and we help them to be amazing teachers,” she says. “It all revolves around a desire to do what’s best for kids.”

Sarah Townsend Davies OWNER, THE PIANO PLACE Sarah Davies remembers rising at 5:30 a.m. every Saturday for a 30-minute drive to music lessons. That was hard on both parent and child, and something she took to heart when she opened The Piano Place in two Draper locations. While convenience is key, Sarah also wants to nurture connections so students enjoy music. That means finding the right teacher

for each student. Her studios feature 45 teachers for piano, guitar, voice, violin, songwriting and ukulele.

“When learning an instrument gets difficult, the connection

Creative design is Shelley’s passion. The renovation supports her dream, and, “gives back to the community a place I would hate to see lost.” The school is again a hub of activity, with dance and photo studios, a salon, a cooking/sewing school and more. “The arts are important,” she says. “There is so much to be shared with the community through artistic expression.”

MALE-DOMINATED FIELD OF HVAC BY HAPPENSTANCE. Years ago, she was a single mom putting herself through medical coding courses, paying her bills by working at a heating and air company. But, when she graduated from her medical coding courses, she realized it was all numbers and no personal contact, so she began to rise through the ranks at her HVAC employer instead. Following four years of preparation to go out into the field, Katy became a “Comfort Consultant” in 2005. Her job isn’t a glamorous one. It involves getting into people’s crawl spaces and attics to assess their heating and air conditioning needs properly in addition to analyzing how much insulation exists, the age of the home, the placement of windows and existing ductwork. Then she does a heat load calculation to determine what size of equipment is right for each home. Katy knows to call ahead before arriving at a client’s home for an estimate so as not to cause any big surprises. “Sometimes I hear people say ‘Honey, it’s a woman!' so I call to prepare them and give them a few minutes to process it," she says. "Once they get an opportunity to know me and to know I do know what I’m doing, it’s really easy from there." Katy has been the top salesperson at her company, Manwill Plumbing and Heating, for the last 13 years. She recently competed against thousands of other salespeople in the western region for the Lennox Top Comfort Consultant, beating sales representatives in big markets such as Los Angeles and Dallas for that award. “We’re not a big market, so it’s crazy that I won,” she says. “I’ll keep crawling into crawl spaces as long as I can. I would never change a thing." 24
