Getting Schooled
I
t might be true that school-school is still out for the last few weeks of summer, but FUN school--The Finishing School, featured on our cover--is definitely in session. And I want to go. Maybe there is something about a pile of raw, colorful elements that stirs the soul and entices it to create something. To make it and share it. At The Finishing School, this is displayed in ribbons and buttons and fabric and spatulas (oh my!)--an entire rainbow of them; at JOCO Gallery this is shown in the artistry and handiwork of John Carroll, through stone and metal and wood. The elements themselves are lovely to look at; the creation of them into something more is inspiring and beautiful... Be it fine art or cookie.
It's my own opinion that every person has an innate need to create things--that part of our inner make-up longs to leave things better than we found them. In this way, I think our creative sides are endless and not limited to specifically artsy raw elements. I like to do things with words; others are remarkable gardeners; still others leave their impressions on youth in positive ways. This is how it is for Officer Green, featured in this issue for his local work with fifth graders as the resident Draper DARE officer. I find, as a busy working mom heading back into an even busier, more structured and rigid school year, that I want to end my summer with a bang, and mimic the happy, helpful, creative people in these pages. And I'm going to start by turning to page 26 and following our local teenagers' examples of summer fun.

hile working in the overcrowded 10-story Los Angeles Twin Towers Correctional Facility, Police Officer Rulon Green witnessed humanity at its worst. As part of the emergency response team, he’d be the first to arrive during a riot, wearing a gas mask and helping to triage the wounded. He called it akin to stepping into a war zone. It was while working here that he noticed a common denominator among the gang members, drug dealers, thieves and murderers. “People aren’t ashamed to tell you why they are in jail. They’ll tell you everything that led up to their incarceration. Drug and alcohol abuse were at the root of their problem,” he recalls. After years spent seeing firsthand how drugs, alcohol and violence destroyed people’s lives, their families' lives and their communities, Green sought to focus on substance abuse prevention because, he says, arresting the same people each week wasn’t making the difference in what he wanted to accomplish as a police officer. When the opportunity arose to return to his home state and serve as a DARE officer in Draper, he “jumped at it.”
“It is something I am passionate about,” he says of DARE. “It is a program that is vital to the community and to our youth.” DARE, Drug Abuse Resistance Education, is a nationwide program with the objective to empower students to respect others and choose to lead lives free from violence, substance abuse, and other dangerous behaviors by teaching them good decision-making skills. Green—now in his 10th year as a police officer and his first year as Draper’s DARE/school resource officer—says the experience has changed him. He’s evolved from a cop handling the aftermath of prison riots and drive-by shootings in East LA to one walking into Draper’s classrooms with a stuffed animal ready to crack jokes, teach skits, and tell stories that relate to drug and bullying prevention. “Not a lot of people get to have that type of experience,” he says. “I’ve evolved into this person I never thought I’d be. I am very happy with who I have become.” Keeping up the energy necessary to visit six Draper elementary schools and engage fifth graders—who Green describes as “really sharp kids” —is challenging.

“I’ve never been so nervous in my life to go in front of these kids and teach them,” he recalls of his first few classroom experiences. “I’ve had people with guns or knives on them, and it didn’t really faze me. But to go in and teach a class full of kids...It isn’t easy. My heart goes out to teachers who do this everyday.” Luckily, Green immediately gets kids’ attention with funny videos of his pet pig, Marilyn. “The kids perk up,” he says when they see her on his smartphone. “I cannot go into one class without someone asking, ‘How’s your pig?’” Marilyn, unfortunately, is too large to make a classroom appearance. “We were told she was a miniature pig and she’d only be 35 pounds,” Green recalls about when he and his wife, Allison, got her as a 11-pound piglet. But she grew. Now she’s a 200-pound pet who is house-trained and sleeps on a Great Dane dog bed. “I think of her as a gigantic housecat,” he says. “She likes to lay around.” Green says he loves to see students’ excitement for the DARE program and is impressed by their ability to retain the information. “I can see a difference in the kids from day one to graduation (from DARE)...The kids leave the program with knowledge and confidence. You can’t put a price on that type of experience.” There’s something else Green hopes to impart on his students, another common denominator he noticed back at the LA Correctional Facility—this one positive. When inmates did turn their lives around, they always did so with the support of a mentor or a loved one. He tells his DARE students that police officers, teachers and parents are there to support them should they need help. As for himself, Green says his support system comes from his wife and the Draper City Police Department. “Put whatever it is in front of me,” he says, “because I know I have their backing.”

JOCO GALLERY PORTRAIT OF A LOCAL ARTIST ARTICLE MIMI DARLEY DUTTON PHOTOGRAPHY MARK THACKERAY

estled in a little red building next to Café Charleston on Pioneer Road sits our community’s first fine art gallery. Its name combines the first names of its husband and wife owners, John and Courtney Carroll. JOCO Gallery officially opened in June after John spent months upgrading the studio and building shelves to display his creations. Though small in size, the gallery is bursting with creativity. The Carroll family had been living in Palm Springs when they decided to relocate to Utah one year ago. John had been marketing his wares at various art shows. “I was kind of getting out of shows mentally, and a gallery is really the next step,” John said. They landed in Draper by “happenstance," finding a house that had fallen out of escrow. “I loved the home right away and loved the neighborhood. We pulled in and it was kind of like Mayberry with kids playing,” he said. John is from a military family that moved to Italy when John was young. He grew up in a traditional European town, off the military base, and the family took

frequent trips to Venice and Florence. They also lived in the Netherlands and Germany before returning to the states to Reno. “I was packed with all this European culture, I was pretty much a European kid,” John said. After graduating from high school in Reno, he went to work at an auction house for antiques, a great learning experience for John. Then John’s family moved to Palm Springs, a place permeated by artists and designers. John got a job at a gallery there where he eventually became an apprentice, learning about art, working with artists and selling fine art. That European upbringing combined with exposure to antiques and art culminated in John becoming an artist himself. “There’s something freeing, therapeutic working with your hands. That’s what first made me really take the jump, that feeling,” he said. Finding the location for his gallery was also happenstance. He’d taken his kids to Café Charleston for Italian sodas. “I sat back and started to like the feel of the place. It felt European,” he said. Riding by one day on his bike, he noticed the building was vacant, so he spoke with the owners, and JOCO Gallery was born. John creates vessels, wall pieces, sculptures and custom work including but not limited to ceramics and woodwork such as tables. “My new phase is more the sculptures, modern,” he said. He’s mixed metals with ceramics, he’s found new woods to work with in Utah, and his ash glazing is his own recipe. “I’ve been getting better glaze results since moving here,” he said, indicating the unusual color. John creates his ceramics in the gallery but the welding and woodworking happen at his home. The gallery also sells jewelry from other artists. “Everything just worked out with us finding Draper. It couldn’t have been a better community. It feels like the creative inclination is different, I feel rejuvenated,” Carroll said.
JOCO GALLERY IS LOCATED AT 1229 E PIONEER ROAD. HOURS OF OPERATION ARE TUESDAY-SATURDAY 10 AM-2:30 PM, CLOSED SUNDAYS AND MONDAYS.

xtracurricular activities have been shown to provide students a multitude of benefits including a stronger mind, training in targeted skills, a wider social circle, time management skills, and exploration of interests. While it may seem difficult to squeeze any sort of extracurricular activity into the business of life these days, the benefits definitely pay off. The Finishing School of Draper provides a place to participate in a range of extracurricular activities and broaden your horizons. They teach the basic principles of cooking, sewing and art skills to children of all ages. Students are learning, making, and creating, while their skill level and self-confidence grows. To attest to The Finishing School’s creative learning atmosphere, students told us all about their fun experiences in classes and the new skills they have been able to take home and share with CONTINUED > family and friends.

Respecting Rattlesnakes ARTICLE MARY ETHERINGTON
AWARENESS, PREVENTION AND TREATMENT
A
n 18 year old male, bit by a rattlesnake in Corner Canyon’s Movie Rocks area in June, was airlifted from the incident location to a nearby trailhead parking lot. He was in stable enough condition to be transported to Utah Valley Hospital by his mom. The teen, hiking on the upper portion of the Ghost Falls trail around 5 PM, heard a snake rattling. He paused to look around, only to discover he was right next to the rattlesnake. When he moved to avoid the snake it struck him in the ankle. Fortunately, one fang entered his ankle and one his shoe. The teen had his cell phone and was able to call 911. Emergency personnel contacted the teen’s parents. The teen’s mom used her AT&T Family Map app to locate her son and provided a screenshot of that information to rescuers, aiding them in locating the teen’s position on the trail. AWARENESS
Utah’s most common rattlesnake is the Great Basin rattlesnake. Rattlesnakes are important predators for Utah's ecosystem. They control the rodent population. Killing or harassing one is illegal and could result in a misdemeanor and fine. Of the 7,000-8,000 people treated for snakebites yearly in the U.S., around five will die. The reality is, snakes are not aggressive creatures. A rattlesnake can sense that humans are too big to be a food source. As “cold-blooded” reptiles, rattlesnakes rely on outside heat sources, preferring periods of activity in temperatures between 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. In cold weather, they take shelter underground or in caves to communally burrow and become inactive. Sergeant Loken (Division of Wildlife Services) tells of a group of scouts who found a snake, picked it up and passed it around when the final boy was bit. The leader realized it was a baby rattler, the boy was treated, and a lesson was learned. Loken explains that a baby rattlesnake has an enlarged head vs. neck size, and a black shiny button at the tip of their tail; a non-venomous snake, like a harmless juvenile gopher snake, has similar markings, but a long slender tail that ends in a point. Safety classes are offered through Utah Rattlesnake Avoidance and Scales and Tales Utah.

PREVENTION
Giving a snake plenty of space is key to avoiding problems. Wildlife.Utah.gov suggests: • Watch where you step, sit, and place your hands. • Remain calm. Do not panic. • Do not try to kill the snake. Doing so is illegal and greatly increases your chance of being bitten. Keeping snakes out of your yard: • Remove brush, wood, rock and junk piles. • Control rodents. Bird feeders and water are two of their main draws. • Avoid scaring away harmless snake species that can deter rattlesnakes from wandering through. • Snake repellent effectiveness is unknown. TREATMENT
Call for emergency help right away. It is crucial to respond quickly and get to a hospital for treatment. Remain calm and do not run, but move slowly to keep venom from circulating to the chest and brain. If possible: • Wash with soap and water. • Keep the area still and lower than the heart. • Cover with a clean, cool compress or a moist dressing to ease swelling and discomfort. • Monitor breathing and heart rate. • Remove all rings, watches, and constrictive clothing, in case of swelling. • Draw a circle around the area and mark the time of the bite and the initial reaction. Try to redraw the circle around the site marking the progression of time. • It is helpful to remember what the snake looks like, its size, and the type of snake if you know it. • Do not apply a tourniquet or suck out the venom, ice or immerse the wound in water, drink alcohol or caffeinated beverages, or pick up the snake or try to trap it.

We know time at home is the most valuable.
• A pair of puncture marks at the wound • Redness and swelling around the bite • Severe pain at the site of the bite • Nausea and vomiting • Labored breathing (in extreme cases, breathing may stop altogether) • Disturbed vision • Increased salivation and sweating • Numbness or tingling around the face and/or limbs

Deaths due to snakebites in the U.S. have been rare since antivenom treatments have been around since the 1950’s. Bites can require as little as three doses to as many as dozens. Most hospitals do not stock antivenom. Lone Peak Hospital ER shares that the antivenom is pricey, needs to be stored carefully, and would most likely expire. Alta View Hospital says antivenom can be couriered to the hospital in twenty minutes. St. Mark’s Hospital says they would transport patients to the U to have the bite fully treated. Intermountain Medical Center and the University of Utah Hospital are equipped to treat the highest level of trauma and are the only hospitals in Utah certified as "Level 1 Trauma Centers." If you find a rattlesnake, give it space and skip the selfie unless you want to risk paying for it.

FOR THE
LOVE OF THE GAME
JON CLIFFORD RETIRES AS VOLUNTEER PRESIDENT OF SVBA ARTICLE MIMI DARLEY DUTTON
B
aseball is Jon Clifford’s passion. In June, he hung up his Southeast Valley Baseball Association (SVBA) President’s cap after four years volunteering to lead the league. But he’s only retiring from the job of president, not getting away from the game completely, because that little white ball with red stitching and the game that goes with it are his favorite pastime. Clifford was raised in Downey, CA, near Los Angeles. “I was a Dodger fan when I was super young and they went to the World Series,” he said. Though neither of his parents were interested in sports, Clifford was “attracted to anything with a ball” at an early age. He began watching baseball on TV, collecting the cards, and playing little league. “It has always been my favorite sport,” he said. Because of young Clifford’s interest in baseball, his dad learned the sport. “He wanted to be a part of my life, so he watched, learned and became a coach,” Clifford said. Clifford played little league and rec-league his elementary through high school years. He met his wife, Cielo, playing softball in college at Cal State University Fullerton. Their boys, Jake and Preston, both play and that led Clifford to finding SVBA. Clifford came to Utah 11 years ago for a job with the Salt Lake Tribune after having worked for the Palm Beach Post, the Los Angeles Daily News and the New York Daily News. Always in newspaper sports departments, Clifford has been a part of journalism teams recognized with awards from the Associated Press.

A LOCAL CHOICE
FOR YOUR MORTGAGE NEEDS
Welcome H om e
TO YOUR NEW DRAPER He left the Tribune because the work hours made it impossible for him to share his favorite sport with his own sons. “I left a job partly because I wanted to be a dad who could coach his kids in sports. I changed careers because that is so important to me. So many of my best memories were of being coached by my dad. I wanted to do that for my kids,” he said. Clifford does some freelance writing, but his primary focus is his growing sports photography business. Clifford has visited nearly every Major League Baseball stadium, having been to 37 with three in existence now that he hopes to get to. In 2015, he helped coach a local team that played in California against the team that eventually won the little league world series that year in the 13U bracket. On a whirlwind trip, he attended last year’s Chicago Cubs World Series victory parade along with his family and local friends who are avid Cubs fans. “They said it was the seventh largest gathering in human history with something like five million people there,” Clifford said. Come spring, you’ll likely see Jon coaching his sons’ teams, taking team photos for his All-Star Photography Utah business, or subbing for a player on a local softball team. “Part of what I’ll miss the most is being out there, meeting people, seeing friends and watching kids play baseball. By no means will I sever ties. I love the sport,” Clifford said.

Local’s Choice
Picks
1. EQUIPMENT: I’m totally biased, but I am in love with the pilates reformer. I have an athletic build and I felt like the workouts on the reformer were the only thing that actually reshaped my muscles. I love the long-lean look! I also feel that nothing works secondary and stabilizer muscles like this machine. Joseph has a famous quote that goes like this: “You will feel better in ten sessions, look better in twenty sessions, and have a completely new body in thirty sessions.” Clinically, I’ve found this to be true! I can attest to the “deep down strong” feeling you get with this type of workout and it is life changing. 2. EQUIPMENT: On a smaller scale, for home use I love resistance bands or tubing. Adding resistance to any “at home” workout takes it to the next level and I love that the tension can be adjusted for whatever degree of difficulty you are looking to achieve. It’s also affordable for any budget. 3. PROTEIN POWDER: I’m LOVING the Beverly International UMP (Ultimate Muscle Protein). This is the best chocolate flavored protein I’ve ever had! This week I’m looking to combine it in a few recipes for late night “treats”. I also like the vanilla flavor and looking forward to trying a few more. 4. DOTERRA LEMON OIL: I’ve been working on better hydration, and for the most part that means water water water….. especially going into these hot months! My favorite addition is four drops of lemon oil to my water bottle. The flavor is perfect, not too overpowering, just a little extra something. The natural detoxifying properties are apparent also. My kids even love it and ask for “lemon water” when we’re on the go (which is much better than juice all the time!) They typically ask for juice and an article in Parents magazine just came out titled “New Guidelines on Fruit Juice: Less for Kids”, so I’m looking to hydrate more with water this summer anyway! 5. PROTEIN BARS: I’m constantly on the go with busy kids/ summer and fall into the trap of waiting too long to eat, then grabbing whatever is fastest to throw in my mouth (which is 99% of the time extremely unhealthy, although I LOVE doughnuts! :)) So I’ve found Quest Bars for a quick grab protein bar. It will satisfy the sweet craving and give you a protein boost on the go.
