ometimes, inadvertently, I pride myself on being busy. To wit, I hate being busy, but all the same I seem to cultivate the lifestyle of busyness for myself, and then talk about it ad infinitum: how I have no time. Time just is, right? Still I seem to make it something in my mind, giving it clearance to rule my life as a static, fillable thing of limited resource. But is it? Because sometimes time is the thing that crawls so slowly then speeds up willy-nilly, then mercifully pauses—an elongated heartbeat, a deep breath, an awakening against the chaos. The other night, long after bedtime came and went and the TV was still on and every light in the house flared and kids were bustling about, wired and loud and making toast, I rounded them up. Reluctantly. Because they have a job and it was time to work. They pulled sweatshirts over their heads, slid on shoes, donned headlamps and work gloves and jumped on to the car's running boards. I turned on the ignition, the hazards, the playlist, then slowly backed out of the driveway… a mom-car decorated with the limbs of children and the gleam of flashlights. Inching slowly around the neighborhood like some type of odd, fanciful, midnight parade, I’d stop the car and the kids would jump off to gather flags we’d placed in lawns earlier in the day. Just like the Boy Scout program but different, because instead of American flags they are college football flags; and instead of holidays, it’s on game days; but all the same it’s a job that is funded graciously by our neighbors and affords my kids the luxury (yep, luxury) to work hard then donate the money to refugees. And I’m sure it’s that fact, that act, right there. That we are doing something together, outside ourselves, for a greater cause, coupled with the fact that we are just outside, and flying against the darkness while the cold air of winter-coming-on wildly messes with our hair and fingertips... but before I know it, the kids are laughing big belly laughs. They are laughing that someone’s head almost hit a tree branch. That a rebar is stuck into a lawn, that someone threw a flag into the back of the car too wildly, that they have finally figured out the lyrics to a complicated chorus on the playlist. They are laughing because they are entrenched in the moment. They’ve forgotten that I tore them away from a warm kitchen, that toast grows cold on the counter, and the TV is still on at home. There's nothing else but this. And just like that, time pauses: the elongated heartbeat, a moment captured, time standing still. Time standing still—stillness—is the ultimate antidote to the feeling of busy. Even in the midst of busy. At this busy, busy time of year, my wish for you and me is that we capture those moments when time stands still. That we remember to laugh in the midst of work. That we remember joy in the midst of the chaos. And that we commit to this joy by serving and loving and giving to a neighbor—whether they’re from another country or just down the block.

here is a refugee crisis in the world today. It is almost overwhelming. As a citizen in our small community of Draper, it can feel like a daunting task to be able to help in tangible way. On December 3, Draper residents will have the perfect opportunity to help refugees in our community in a meaningful way. Arvo Watches and Godfrey Entertainment will be co-presenters for the 5th Annual “Christmas 4 the Kids” (C4TK) gala event at the old Park school, or "The Old School," on Pioneer Road at 12441 South 900 East. It is a great opportunity to support a worthy cause and to also check out the newly restored school that will soon be a centerpiece of the community. 12

here’s always room for Santa Claus at Caralee Skinner’s home. He’ll just have to squeeze in with 500 others.

Space is at a premium in Skinner’s Santa room, filled floor to ceiling with

Santas of all shapes and sizes. With the eye of a museum curator, Skinner displays her Santas with great care so that each gets a bit of the spotlight. “I love every one of my Santas,” says Skinner. “And I have a different reason why I love each one. I want to see them. I don’t want them boxed away.” There’s miniature Santas, santas in snowglobes, Santa with Mrs. Claus, antique Santas, Santa on a horse, on a motorcycle, on a black bear and with reindeer, of course. There’s wooden Santas, stuffed Santas, metal Santas, a Santa carrying a pink flamingo, Santa drinking Coca-Cola, and a Willie Nelson Santa. Santas adorn quilts, rugs, plates, signs, curtains, and door hangers. There’s even one blue Santa, from BYU, of course. All are one of a kind. Some are from her world travels; others from a trip to the thrift store. Many come from the day-after Christmas sales. She dusts them all once a year, a tricky job since one slip-up and they tumble like red and white dominoes. Her St. Nicholas collection started rather innocently, when in the early years of her marriage, she painted a porcelain Santa Claus and fell in love with him. So, she painted another one. Her husband Barry took notice and decided to surprise her with a Santa figurine for Christmas. “Then it mushroomed,” she says. From then on, every Christmas friends and family knew what to put under her tree. She especially loves the handmade gifts: Santa pillows, Santa crossstitch, Santa dolls, and always gets a chuckle from sayings on plaques—one of her favorite being: “Be naughty, save Santa a trip.” Her December birthday helps double up on the Santa gifts. “I am the easiest person to get a gift for,” she says. Some of her favorite Santas are those in a nativity scene— praying or offering gifts to baby Jesus. That scene, she says, emphasizes the meaning of Christmas. “I always made sure that my kids, and now my grandchildren, know that the purpose of Christmas is not just presents and Santa Claus—although I do love him—but the real meaning is giving,” she says. And much of that giving comes from being kind to others. “During this time of year people are kinder, more patient, more loving to one another,” she says. “People

ages can enjoy unless otherwise indicated. “Pop-Up” books are extraordinary books that contain surprises, information and joy. By opening these remarkable books you get to enjoy a three dimensional experience and feel as though you are in-between the book. Two of my favorite paper engineers are Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart. Sabuda has two new outstanding pop-ups: The White House: A Pop-Up of Our Nation's Home that has several rooms

including Lincoln's office which transforms into the current bedroom by turning a smaller flap where the desk disappears and out pops the bed. The Christmas Story retells the Nativity story with six glorious pages. One page features a golden star high above that turns upon opening the page. The last page features the manger scene with an effulgent angel that seems to float above. Sabuda's trademark of this type of artwork is featured in both of these books: all pages, and the exquisitely finite details, are placed on white paper. Reinhart also has two new books: Lego Pop-Up features Reinhart's specialty of multiple smaller flaps along the pages that also pop-out and are on every page. He has also developed a new technique whereby you pull the main pop-up and another large pop-up appears. There is much to enjoy in this fun and richly colorful book which has some information, comics, humor and storyline. Frozen: A Pop-Up Adventure is a beautiful display that replicates the popular movie but with inventiveness of pop-out. Reinhart continues his invented pull tabs throughout this gorgeous book. Every page has the muted pale colors of blue and green hues that glisten and glimmer as they pop-out. 24

Trains: A Pop-Up Railroad Book, by Robert Crowther, is an informative book that demonstrates different types of trains and the bridges and tunnels they travel over and through by popping out. There are steam trains, twins of old and the most current type of train exhibits in this interactive pop-out book. The rest of these books are wonderful fiction books, and with the exception of the last book, all would be great read aloud books. The Borrowers, by Mary Norton, and illustrated by the original artists Beth and Joe Krusch, is a compilation of all six classic books embodied into one large hardback book. These stories were originally written back in the early 1950's and have been reissued several times. But this is the first time they have all been placed into one book. The stories center around a very tiny family who lives under the floorboards in the kitchen of a country house. These tiny people "borrow" items from above to use in their little dwelling, such as a matchbox for a dresser and stamps for artwork hung on the walls. Trouble begins when a boy from above their tiny dwelling

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: The Illustrated Edition, by J. K. The Complete Adventures of Curious George: 75th Anniversary Edition, by Margret & H. A. Rey, has all seven original stories and artwork by this husband and wife team. You will find Curious George's map of his world on the end pages as well as an interesting scrapbook of the authors’ lives found at the back. These stories are perfect for ages three through eight. Edward Eager's Tale of Magic has recently been reissued in a set of four paperback books. These wonderful classics were originally published in the 1950's and are about the highly imaginative magical adventures of siblings. or me and Clark Griswold, the kick-off to Christmas is puttin’ up the pine. Big, small, fake fir or real – doesn’t matter. This quiet custom gives us permission to proceed with the magical month of December. And no one is left out. Rich or poor. Young and old. Those who pledge allegiance to the real thing or people who prefer plastic. No snootiness allowed in this season of sales, Santas and sleigh bells. In this place we are all created equal. But before you haul out the holly or carry up the Christmas cartons, some crucial questions will need to be considered. Authentic or artificial? Parking lot or tree farm? One’s loyalty to his or her preference can be pretty fierce. And for some reason, compromise doesn’t come easy. Take it from me, there’s usually an argument lurking just around the corner. For several spouses and significant others surviving the season hasn’t come easy. Most years my mom and dad played out a reallife family feud. The question wasn’t real or fake, except for one year during the 60s when silver aluminum trees with the revolving colored lights were the in thing. Mom usually wanted a Christmas Vacation-style tree, and Dad was left to figure out how to make it fit into the tiny red and green metal stand. The stand didn’t have a chance and a gray galvanized bucket always figured into the solution. And there was swearing. Always swearing. Tree haggling. It’s a genetic condition. My mom passed it to me, and I will pass it on to my daughter. With us (me and my husband) the wrangling involved size and price. He wanted a Charlie Brown tree, and I wanted anything else. And there was crying. Always crying.

It’s likely that husbands and wives have been arguing about Christmas trees since the time Martin Luther toted a Tannenbaum over the river and through the woods. I’m sure Mrs. Luther thought he was nuts. The conifer controversy has continued. Despite Teddy Roosevelt’s attempt to ban Christmas trees in the early 1900s, last year Americans spent about a billion dollars on real trees. That amounts to 33 million trees making their way into living rooms across the nation. Forget the hassle of jerry-rigging a Scotch pine to the car roof, say artificial advocates. They carry theirs home in boxes. And their numbers are nothing to sneeze at. A recent Nielsen survey indicated that more than 80 percent of American households put up a phony fir. Reasons are listed as the cost of buying a new tree every year (and maybe a vacuum), the convenience of pulling down a fully-dressed tree from the attic and the environmental impact. I think it’s fair to say that whether you opt for counterfeit or traditional, either would be a good choice. There is no right or wrong. No good or bad. Only a remarkable transformation just waiting to happen. As for me, I still miss the fragrant fir from my childhood. A strapping big tree standing in a bucket. Colored bulbs the size of a man’s thumb, not only lighting up the entire house, but producing enough heat to roast marshmallows. And Andy Williams singing something about chestnuts. Yes, the transformation is complete. A simple tree has become the spectacular symbol of a sacred season.
