Dr. David Hanle of Complete Health Dentistry of the Emerald Coast will be the first to tell you he takes a different approach to dentistry than traditional dentist offices. While every dentist cares about the health of your teeth, gums and mouth, Dr. Hanle seeks to bring his patients to the root cause of their health problems by informing them of the many ways their mouth affects their overall health and wellness. "My life changed in 2018 when I was at a lecture and was introduced to how oral bacteria affected people systemically,” Dr. Hanle said. “I thought, ‘I can’t go back to work doing what I was doing knowing what I know now.’ Since that time, I have been on a journey to optimize oral and airway health to improve whole-body health; that’s what we do at my practice.” Dr. Hanle explained that what he learned during the lecture became personal to him, as he discovered that his wife had genetic health markers that were impacting her drastically and needed to be addressed to stop their effects. could about how oral health could help reduce and prevent major diseases in the body, Dr. Hanle said he began a journey to redefine his life’s work. “The problems affecting my wife became my why,” said Dr. Hanle. “I’ve now turned from working in my practice to working on my practice.” Dr. Hanle explained that when problems arise in one part of the body, it can affect other parts of the body as well; this is why he takes a wholebody approach to oral wellness, considering each patient’s medical history as well as the bacteria levels in their mouth to find the best care plan. “I try to optimize people’s oral and nasal environment to improve their health in the entire body,” he said. “From what takes place through your microbiome in the mouth to the airway and how you breathe. I try to inform my patients on how that all supports your body and how those things work together.” One of Dr. Hanle’s unique approaches is to use laser technology to help restructure the oral

passages for better breathing. This non-invasive procedure can help patients with snoring problems, as well as those who suffer from sleep apnea. The soft tissue laser treats the soft palate by helping with tissue rejuvenation. The laser treatment stimulates the production of collagen helping to firm and shrink the damaged tissue, making it more elastic and resistant to collapse. "As a dentist, I can recognize physical signs of potential systemic problems in the oral and airway passages,” he said. “We also have 3D imaging to look at bone and soft tissue structures of the head and neck that give us structural clues to whole body problems.” Complete Health Dentistry of the Emerald Coast is also proud to be one of only 50 providers in the U.S. to offer the ReCode program which focuses on Alzheimer’s prevention and early intervention. "My goal with all of my patients is to reduce and eliminate oral bacteria that are systemically pathogenic, as those bacteria can create or worsen systemic diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, and Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr. Hanle. Dr. Hanle believes the whole-body oral health approach he is now using in his practice needs to be offered more widely and talked about among more doctors and providers as an option for their patients. “Dentistry has been separated from medicine for a while now, but everything is connected,” he said. “The mouth is connected to the rest of the body, so what happens in the mouth happens to the rest of the body. If you don’t address everything, it is hard to solve anything. We are at the forefront of this root-cause medical process. “I would like to donate my time to veteran K9s.” What do you get when you take a veterinarian out of a clinic? A passionate animal lover looking for a way to give back. This is exactly what semi-retired veterinarian Eric Lafreniere discovered about himself. After 25 years working, owning and running Stark County Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Ohio, Eric said he is ready for a slower pace. "I still go back to Ohio every few months to check in on the hospital and work as a veterinarian for a few days, but I moved here to Santa Rosa Beach to focus on my family, my fitness, and other passions,” Eric said. “I want to give back and volunteer my services instead of opening another clinic; there are plenty of quality clinics here already.”
Eric’s philanthropic idea is to offer free veterinary care to retired military service dogs in the area. The idea for this new venture came while chatting with Jonathan Howard, a retired special operator and board member of First There Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to helping veteran Air Force combat controllers. “Jon explained how some of the veterans have adopted retired military dogs that have chronic health problems, and a lot of times the owners have limited resources to address those problems,” Eric said. “I would really like to donate my time to those veteran K9 that need help and veterinary care for acute or chronic conditions.” Of course, Eric is no stranger to charity veterinary work. he has always found ways to give back in both big and small ways to the local animal community. “I’ve always been involved in nonprofits over the years, with low-cost spay and neuter clinics along with rescue pets needing medical care at my hospital in Ohio,” Eric said. “When I first started my clinic, things were a little bit different. We were the only emergency hospital around. Often, we would get emergency cases and I would be the only veterinarian around that was able to do the surgeries. I was fortunate enough to be able to do those procedures, even though some clients couldn’t afford the care needed and often no one else could do them. Being the owner of the hospital allowed me to do the work at a decreased cost or no cost to the clients when needed.” Eric said that today, with increased access to veterinary specialists and increasing costs of providing veterinary care, he probably would not have the ability to do that kind of pro-bono work professionally, and he counts himself lucky to have been able to serve his clients in Ohio in such a special way. He explained that his own cat, Sundae, came to him because a client declined the recommended treatment plan along with the aftercare needed. In fact, Eric said every pet he has owned throughout his career has come to him as a rescue through his practice. “Sundae came to me with a shattered femur, and the only option available was amputation which the owner
declined,” Eric said. “She looked at me and said, ‘Just euthanize him.’ But I couldn’t do it, so I just said, ‘I’ll take him.’ Over the years I have had big dogs and little dogs, and even a blind dog; always rescued, or come to me through the hospital." Originally from Canada, Eric said he moved to the U.S. following both professional and personal goals. The U.S. offered more opportunities to his veterinary work which began in Oregon in 1999, followed by Ohio in 2000, and eventually to his retirement in Florida in 2011. "I always felt professionally that people in the U.S. are willing to go further including with what they would spend on their pets,” he said. “There was also better equipment; but honestly, I just thought I’d like to try living somewhere else.” Today, Eric keeps busy spending time with his two daughters Chloe, 14, and Olive, 12, managing a business as a real estate investor along with building houses on 30A and south Florida. His favorite pastime, however, is building his dream non-profit, K9 Warrior Foundation, which he hopes to have up and running in the next year. “Through my friendship with Jon Howard, I have become acutely aware of the real challenges that veterans face on a daily basis," Eric said. "Supporting veterans is a way I can give back to a country that has given me so much. Coming to the United States turned out to be one of the smartest decisions I have made, as it allowed me to achieve my own version of the American dream."

Healing Hoof Steps, an equine assisted therapy nonprofit in Crestview, was born out of a daughter’s love for her father. Narissa Jenkins is the daughter of a decorated Vietnam veteran, Maj. Jack A. Weatherford, USAF (Ret) who was a great soldier and family man but endured the effects of PTSD for the rest of his life due to his time at war. “My dad, who recently passed away, was a huge part of why I did this,” Narissa said. “My dad flew combat rescue missions in Vietnam and if you came out of Vietnam you did not talk about PTSD. In his generation, you did not ask for benefits unless you lost a limb. You suppressed those feelings and memories and carried on. But we know now how that mentality affects entire families. Trauma builds walls around the hearts of everyone it touches; it takes acknowledging those walls and the willingness to work on them to bring them down.” When Narissa moved back to Northwest Florida in 2015, she decided to leave her career in media and open her own equine-assisted therapy center focused on helping people like her dad and their families heal from trauma in their lives; thus, Healing Hoof Steps was born. “There was a lot of research being done with veterans’ PTSD and the use of horses to help provide an

alternative to traditional mental health treatments,” she said. “There was nothing like this in the Florida Panhandle, yet we have the largest veteran population per capita in the United States.” Narissa explained that horses have a calming effect on many of their clients as they are experts at reading non-verbal cues, live in the moment and come to humans with open hearts. “Animals don’t come with any preconceived judgments, so they create this free and open space for people to be vulnerable,” she said. “People are worried about so many things that are out of their control, but horses, as prey animals, can’t live that way or they will not survive. Human depression is linked to things in the past that cannot be changed, and human anxiety is related to all the things in the future that may or may not happen, but horses do not have a concept of time. Equine assisted therapy is learning to follow the horse’s lead and practicing being in control of those emotions involving things we cannot control.” Since opening, Healing Hoof Steps has grown from its first year serving about 100 therapy hours to serving more than 3,000 therapy hours in 2022. Today there is such a high demand for this unique service that Narissa is having to place clients on a waiting list. Recently, Healing Hoof Steps received funding from Governor Ron DeSantis and the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to expand access to alternative mental health services with horses in order to serve more clients in Okaloosa County and the surrounding areas. “The pandemic threw our business into overdrive, and it hasn’t slowed down since,” Narissa said. “We are now in the process of expanding with a plan to add four new private mental health offices with adjoining private pastures for horses. Our Mental Health Outpost Suites and covered arena are projected to be completed before the summer of 2024." Healing Hoof Steps offers two distinct modalities of healing through horses;
Clinical Mental Health Counseling which involves licensed mental health professionals working with clients in ground-based activities with a loose herd of horses, and Holistic Therapeutic Riding Program which is focused on kinesthetic learning to help clients with physical, emotional or developmental challenges work on coordination and core strength through guided riding. “What makes horses so approachable is that you do not have to communicate using words,” Narissa said. “Some people who come to us have tried traditional therapy but have not found relief. These horses teach by example, they are hyper-vigilant creatures, but they would rather live in peace. The distinct hierarchy of a herd, their social bonds CONTINUED >

and forgiveness are traits that make them very similar to humans. ” Dealing with her own grief with the loss of her father recently, Narissa said everyone at Healing Hoof Steps has been so understanding of her own need for time and space to heal. “My main goal with our programs is to spread the word that it is ok to not be ok,” Narissa said. “It’s not ok to stay in it forever, but you have to recognize that it is ok to ask for help, it is not a sign of weakness. Mental health professionals have the tools to help you work through something you are not familiar with. If you are truly doing mental health for a client’s benefit, you should be constantly trying to put yourself out of business. The whole goal is to get people better and back to their lives until they need us again.” Now, as the non-profit looks towards expanding, Narissa said she wants everything she does to be in memory of her father, the one who started it all. “I don’t know how much it helped him, but I know he was proud of me for helping so many people,” Narissa said. “We won the non-profit of the year award from Crestview Chamber for 2023, and that was the most emotional that he had been, knowing that we had been recognized for helping so many people. Coming out of the Holiday Season here on the Emerald Coast, we continue to see signs of resiliency in our local real estate market. Inventory levels continue to rise and closed sales volume continues to be roughly in line with the same quarter last year, indicating signs of fundamental strengths and resilience in our local market. Sellers are beginning to adjust their pricing and incentive strategies to help them sell faster in the face of the increased competition from all the new inventory on market. Buyers now have more options to choose from than they have had in over 2 years, but they are still having to adjust to the highest mortgage rates in the last 20 years. Even with all of these challenges, the market does appear to be faring well overall as compared to this same time last year. That’s a good sign for 2024 and beyond and long term values in general for our local market.
