In fact, the design process goes beyond choosing colors or furniture — it starts with discovering what founder Kat Esteves calls each client’s “personal blueprint.” This guiding philosophy shapes every project, placing the focus not just on how a space looks, but on how it feels and functions for the people who live there. “Understanding the client’s needs starts with a conversation, reading between the lines, asking thoughtful questions, and listening carefully to what the client really needs,” Esteves revealed. This intuitive, highly personalized approach is further enriched by the multi-generational perspective the team brings to the table. Esteves works alongside her mother, Creative Director Diane Rakijasic, as the mother-daughter duo blends the vibrant energy of both modern insight and seasoned experience. As a mother of two young daughters, ages 6 and 8, Esteves intimately understands the daily demands of a busy household, while Rakijasic draws on over two decades of design expertise and a meticulous eye honed through years of guiding clients through transitional life stages. “Our dynamic is what sets us apart,” Esteves explained. “We approach each project from different angles. One grounded in the bustle of raising a family, the other rooted in refined living. We challenge each other to find thoughtful solutions that work for everyone.” Reneww Design was officially founded four years ago in Esteves’ Chester home studio, but the mother-daughter collaboration had begun long before that. “My mom used to redo my bedroom all the time when I was little because I was always craving change,” she recalled with a smile. “Now I see that same creative spark in my daughters—it’s come full circle.” From sourcing materials to executing final installs, the Reneww Design process is structured yet refreshingly flexible. Following an initial consultation, the team presents a budget and concept review, ensuring the vision, aesthetic, and investment are fully aligned before advancing to the final design development phase. “We always want to make sure we’re heading in the right direction before narrowing in on final selections.” Esteves’ background in fashion merchandising and sourcing lends her a sharp eye for quality and long-term value. “We encourage clients to invest in what matters [and] the pieces that anchor a space for years, like a great sofa or countertop,” she added. “These are the things you won’t replace often, so they’re worth spending on. For other areas, we can be more strategic with the budget.” With this in mind, the team emphasizes the importance of a thoughtful and comprehensive approach to budgeting, especially for those new to interior design. She offers this advice: “Know your budget and think about the big picture. Things add up quickly. Where partnership and passion unite—one style, one story, and one community at a time. At MJ Salon, it’s more than just a cut.

The Mane Duo It’s not everyday a couple gets to talk shop at their shop. But that’s exactly the case for Manny and Jessica Cotto, the husband and wife team behind MJ Salon in Boonton. A community staple for five years now, the shop functions as one-part barber, one-part salon and a labor of love between the two.

As they each built strong, independent careers, the idea of a one-stop shop naturally emerged—proof that in the hair industry, two heads really are better than one. “We said why are we working for other people when we could open up our own place?” Jessica recalled. “Why don’t we have a barbershop and a salon all mixed in one? It will make us unique and different.” They threw in the scissors at their separate shops and forged forward renting a suite together on Main Street in Boonton. As an established barber, Manny brought his following, which opened doors to referrals for Jessica. In setting their sights on a bigger space and in a baton-passing CONTINUED >

Partners in life and partners in business begs the question of what came first, the marriage or the shop? That would be the marriage—years in the making and envisioned by Manny from the start. “We met when I was 17 years old and living in Morristown,” Jessica explained. At the time, Manny was a barber at Uptown Cutz in Morristown and Jessica was working at a pizzeria. “He came into the pizzeria and was throwing me all of the lines and giving me the business,” she said. “He said ‘don’t worry, you’re going to be my wife.’” Little did she know that Manny’s “giving her the business” would lead to a business, but it took years of persistence to go the distance. Although they both worked in Morristown and crossed paths often, it wasn’t until a chance meeting at a concert—where Manny was performing— that she finally saw him in a new light. “I said: ‘this man is haunting me.’” The rest, you might say, is hair-story. “Here we are 20 years, one son, and a shop later,” she said. The couple are the proud parents of nine-yearold Jadiel, who is just as much a fixture of the shop as his parents.

IT WILL MAKE US UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT.” moment, the couple landed their current location which was already an existing salon space. “It just fell into our lap and we said ‘what’s the worst that could happen?’” Besides, what’s a little customer sharing between husband and wife? “There’s men that sometimes may want color to cover up the grays and they might not want to walk into a female salon,” she said, noting that men are typically the pickier ones when it comes to hair. And Manny knows this firsthand. A trip to the barber requires just as much shaping and styling for men as it does for women. “You have to be really creative in terms of the shaping,” Manny explained. “You have to consider the man’s facial features. There is an art that we put into those 30 minutes in the chair.” That same dedication to craft is reflected in the team itself. The MJ family is growing, now including two new cosmetologists—Emma, a full-time stylist, and their newest addition, Patty, a seasoned parttime stylist with a loyal client roster of her own. “Patty has clients who are in their 70s or older,” Jessica said. “She’s an old soul and a young soul at the same time.” When Jessica and Manny are not tending to tresses, the couple can be found out in the community, performing acts of kindness that are just as much a part of their business model as a wash and cut. “I love to give back,” Jessica said, highlighting the Boonton Women’s Club, where she provides donation boxes for back-to-school drives and donates a percentage of the salon services to support the organization. On a more personal note, she is also hyper-vigilant about giving back to the autism community. Jessica is the legal guardian of her autistic brother and regularly recognizes the efforts of caretakers.

“Autism Awareness Month is huge for me,” she said. “I relate to it.” Every April, she donates $5 of every service to caretakers of those with special needs. “I choose someone new every year,” she said. “I just want them to know that they’re appreciated.” In continuing their outreach efforts, the couple also regularly donates to food pantries and treats preschoolers to a salon day. They also participate in career day at John Hill School in Boonton. A business, a family, and a large footprint in the community. What’s next for these entrepreneurial style-savvy lovebirds? Bigger and bolder is on the horizon, as in a selection of established stylists and services including mani-pedis, facials, and waxing. “This is a blessing in reality,” Manny expressed. “I never thought when I met my wife that we would be partners like this.” MJ Salon is located at 123A Madison St. in Boonton.

Jill Marie Kelly doesn’t just radiate energy—she seems to channel it to support others. She’s hands-on in every sense and is equally in tune to those who come in contact with her. A self-proclaimed lifelong empath, Kelly has worn many hats under the caregiving umbrella. She’s worked as a preschool daycare teacher, certified nursing assistant (CNA), music teacher, and nanny for individuals with special needs. She identifies as a natural caregiver—a role that extends to every client she serves. Her latest professional pivot, however, came during the pandemic, when she set out to learn something new while the world stood still. “I read the book The Art of Psychic Reiki and then reached out to the author (Lisa Campion) through a Facebook group and found out that she was running a master academy online,” she explained. In 2021, she

began practicing Reiki at the Metaphysical Shop in Morristown while still teaching. By September 2022, she launched her practice full-timefirst in Morristown, briefly in Denville, and is now based in Parsippany. Today, she uses those learned techniques to help promote relaxation, reduce stress, and enhance an individual’s sense of overall well-being. They’re also flexible in format-ranging from five-minute check-ins to full-hour sessions, in person or remote. And her reach goes far beyond New Jersey. Clients from across the country-and even across the globe-seek out her services. In fact, Kelly regularly works remotely with a client in Australia who turns to her for support. The woman describes it as “charging my battery so I can face life,’” Kelly shared. “I always tell people energy has no geography,” she emphasized—a belief that guides her work. CONTINUED >

Kelly helps clients of all ages and backgrounds navigate through life’s twists and turns. On the mental health side, she’s worked with grieving individuals, clients navigating divorce, and children who’ve experienced trauma-sessions which require a parent’s presence. She has also seen her fair-share of high stress profession types such as nurses, doctors, lawyers, and working moms (to name a few). Kelly was able to build out her client base, following a Facebook testimonial that drew a large contingent of “stressed out moms,” to her doorstep. More recently, she’s seen a growing number of male clients-corporate professionals, Wall Street executives, and lawyers turning to her with need for a space to decompress. “They need a place to go to decompress and release,” she explained. In addition to seeing clients at her private practice, Kelly also regularly collaborates with other small business owners. Her next scheduled appearance will be a gallery reading at The Wellness Gala right in downtown Denville on September 18th. She is also a firm believer in intuition and the power of manifesting one’s own destiny—principles that often guide her work. “We can all control our energy and intuitive ability,” Kelly added. When she’s not working with clients, she channels her energy into personal passions like music, as she formerly performed professionally and now sings and plays guitar as well as ukulele. She’s also the published author of ‘Things I Should Keep to Myself,’ a collection of poetry and short stories.
