As a new year begins, many people recommit to their health, and one of the simplest ways to do that is through routine primary care. Amid an increasingly complicated healthcare landscape, Saint Clare’s Hospital is making that easier by offering community-focused access to annual physicals, walk-in services, and preventive care. To support that mission, a simplified model of on-site primary and immediate care has emerged, giving patients essential services without long waits or multiple appointments. It’s a hybrid approach that blends clinic convenience with the continuity of a primary care practice. Whatever the case or service, the community-based programs at Saint Clare’s function as a one-stop shop for primary care, walk-ins, and labs. Preventive screenings, rapid testing, and vaccinations are also available. “Overall physicals have great value,” Chief Medical Officer Pramil Cheriyath said. “It allows a disease to be caught early on.” “Saint Clare’s primary care clinic opened just over a year ago and acts as a middle ground between urgent care and appointment-based services,” added Medical Director Anna Slavin. The goal is to refocus attention on primary care, specifically the annual physical, and make routine healthcare more accessible. “We wanted to make sure that patients in the community have a gateway to primary care,” Cheriyath noted. “The primary provides initial screenings for the patient with a focus on prevention to avoid a hospital stay.” Since launch, the community response has been strong. “Patients are our biggest advertisers,” he revealed. “They tell their friends and relatives.”

In addition to appointments, the walk-in clinic offers immediate care for minor injuries or illnesses without insurance concerns. “In our practice, we provide care regardless of insurance status.” The clinic also helps patients avoid unnecessary emergency room visits. “A clinic inside the hospital allows a patient who may be experiencing chest pain to be directly admitted. That’s the biggest advantage of the clinic.” The long-term aim is returning patients to primary care so conditions can be caught early. “If we diagnose early, we can hopefully avoid a hospital stay,” Cheriyath added. Appointment delays have become a major issue in today’s healthcare climate. Both the Denville and Dover locations operate five days a week for patients 18 and older. To support demand, the clinic leverages a strong in-house residency program. “We have the largest program in the area and we want the resident physicians to stay here and continue to serve the community,” said Vinod Nookala, associate chief medical officer and hospitalist director. Residents also play a key role in early diagnosis and health education. “The clinic is spacious and welcoming and even includes an interactive smartboard for patients to learn about different diseases,” Nookala added. “Should a clinic patient require a follow-up visit, the same resident assigned to the initial visit is also scheduled for the follow-up,” Slavin said. This continuity of care allows patients to select a permanent primary provider. “A lot of times patients try to schedule appointments and it may take months to be seen,” Slavin added. “Here, we can provide same-day to see a primary.” Primary care support also extends to hospitalized patients. “Some of them don’t have a primary doctor and we refer them to the primary clinic,” Nookala explained. All three physicians note a renewed emphasis on primary care over subspecialties. “The emphasis is on bringing the patient back to the primary care office so that one person can provide an overall picture and then decide if a specialist is necessary and make recommendations from there,” Cheriyath said. There are discussions in the works to eventually incorporate subspecialties as well. In addition to medical attention, the clinic offers translation services for a multitude of languages thanks in part to a diverse residents’ pool. While the clinic embodies prevention and accessibility, it is also driven by the overall mission of inclusion. “When you invest in the community, it’s better for everyone,” Nookala noted with a smile. Nicole Colella is quite literally in the business of energy. As an advocate for holistic wellness, she often describes herself as a human tuning fork. For Colella, it’s all about the vibrations people put out into the world. “If you have two tuning forks, the other one will ring and match the frequency and vibration of the first,” she explained. “The practitioner sets the vibratory tone so that the body remembers. That tune is where you do the work.” At her core, Colella’s role is to understand her clients’ energy and adjust accordingly. Once she connects with their experiences and challenges, she determines what needs to be addressed to clear a path forward.

She grounds her explanation in simple science. “We’re all made up of atoms,” Colella explained. “Energy innately flows out of all of us. When we emote, we’re exuding energy. Hugging someone is sharing energy.” That sensitivity to energy has always been with her, though she discovered its depth after the passing of her father, a moment that awakened her intuition and inspired her to explore it further. Her experiences led her to enroll in a metaphysical and divination school. “They told me I had the potential to help a lot of people,” she recalled. “That’s kind of how it got started. The universe dragged me by the hair, kicking and screaming.” Today, Colella is the founder and owner of SpiritHealer Wellness in Randolph, where she offers both in-person and virtual sessions, as well as space for other practitioners who specialize in complementary modalities. Each month brings a thoughtfully curated schedule of wellness events, such as guided meditation, specialty workshops and lectures, and networking opportunities. Originally founded as CardShaper in 2022, the business evolved into SpiritHealer Wellness, officially launching under its new name in June 2025. Today, SpiritHealer Wellness serves as a haven for holistic practices ranging from Reiki to Tarot and more. After years in practice, Colella believes that complete restoration is a conscious decision and provides the tools to help clients recalibrate mind, body, and spirit. “It’s not me doing all the work,” she emphasized. “There’s active participation on the client’s part.” Her approach includes using her skills as a life coach to integrate the mind– body connection for deeper emotional understanding.

A lifelong New Jerseyan and Montclair State University graduate, Colella’s story is rooted in selfmade ambition and deep local pride. Born and raised in the Garden State, she and her family have lived throughout Central and Northern New Jersey before settling in Randolph in 2018, where she established her practice and continues to grow it today. Before opening her own wellness center, Colella worked in the fashion industry and later ran her own photography studio. During the pandemic, she even self-published a crochet book and a business guidebook—a true testament to her entrepreneurial spirit. Now, her work blends multiple modalities, tailored to each client’s needs. Over time, Colella developed her own namesake modality, The Colella Method, a customized blend of the tools and techniques she has mastered over the years. “It’s a way to bring the body back to harmony.” Her sessions extend beyond individuals to include families, children, and even animals. “I want to be able to reach everyone and be inclusive,” she shared. Colella also prioritizes care for the caregivers. Every other month, she hosts a “holistic networking dinner,” inviting fellow practitioners to share a meal, CONTINUED >

recharge, and reconnect. “It’s a time for us to come together and nourish ourselves,” she explained. While helping others is inevitably her calling, Colella’s family keeps her grounded. She lives with her husband, Ken, a CPA, and their son Michael, while still staying close to her daughter Dionna, a pre-med student. “It’s a lot for them to wrap their heads around,” she admitted with a smile, “but they’re behind me.” SpiritHealer Wellness is located at 10 West Hanover Avenue, Suite 107 in Randolph.

Emma’s courageous cancer journey inspired her father’s path to recovery.

Sometimes life changes in a moment so small, you almost miss it. For AJ and Lindsey Wyman, a simple worry about their infant daughter, Emma, soon became every parent’s worst fear and the beginning of a journey that would test their family’s strength. What started as a late-night trip to the emergency room quickly became a series of hospital visits and inconclusive tests. Eventually, doctors at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia delivered the news no parent is prepared to hear: Emma had cancer. “She was so young (7 months) that the cancer was either as young or younger,” Wyman explained. “Her oncologist had to kind of guess and said, ‘I’m going to treat it like a Ewing sarcoma.’ But she was diagnosed with an undifferentiated sarcoma because it was too young to determine what kind of cancer it was.” Treatment began about a month later, but Emma had a frightening reaction to her first round of chemotherapy. When she woke up three days later, everything had changed. “The doctors said, ‘The life she was supposed to have is not going to happen now.’ It was very unsettling.” The Wymans lived at the hospital for three and a half months, moving between the oncology unit and the rehabilitation wing.

“She’d get chemo, then go to physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy. Then her counts would bottom out, and we’d go back into isolation,” Wyman added. During treatment, the family stayed at the Ronald McDonald House, which he described as “incredible, like a mansion. They don’t charge you for the room, and they take care of you like family.” Two rounds into treatment, they received the first glimmer of hope. “The oncologist came in and pressed on her stomach where the tumor was and said, ‘It’s considerably smaller.’ After the fourth round, they did an ultrasound. Shortly after, they went in and got the whole tumor out.” By 11 months old, Emma was discharged from the hospital; and at 14 months, she had finished chemo—all within just seven months. “Her last round was December 30, 2015, and she’s been in remission ever since.” Now 11 years old, Emma is thriving. “You’d have no idea anything ever happened to her. She still has some limitations on her left side, but she plays soccer and basketball, and she’s an energetic team player.” But as Emma healed, Wyman found himself facing a different kind of battle. “I bottled things up,” Wyman said. “I had lost my dad before Lindsey and I got married, one of my best friends two

weeks after our wedding, and some coworkers as well. I didn’t process any of it. Then my newborn had cancer, and I dealt with it internally when I shouldn’t have.” Eventually, that pain led to addiction. “It was the only thing that made me feel better,” he revealed. “I lost my job, went to rehab, and came back completely different and more aware of everything that happened.” Therapy and writing became his outlet. “My therapist told me to start writing. I didn’t want to at first, but once I did, it felt great, like this huge weight was lifted off my chest.” That writing eventually became his debut book, The Grace to Carry On, which chronicles Emma’s recovery and his own journey through trauma, addiction, and redemption.

“Everything we’ve been through was devastating, but it made me a better person—more present, more aware, and more grateful.” “Most of the book is about Emma and her battle, but there are underlying mental health tones.” When it comes to other parents supporting their children through illness, he shares the advice he wishes he once heard: “You need to set time aside for yourself too—it’s not selfish. If you don’t take care of yourself, you’re doing the whole family an injustice.” Today, Wyman has been clean for five years, and Emma has been in remission for ten. “Everything we’ve been through was devastating,” he reflected. “But it made me a better person—more present, more aware, and more grateful.” The Grace to Carry On is available for purchase on Amazon.

Helping Minds Heal and Grow

“Anxiety is a big liar,” Palumbo explained . “Think of it like a smoke detector going off when there’s no fire...it’s trying to be helpful .” The son of two police officers, Ferdinando Palumbo set out to follow his parents into the uniform and badge. But life had other plans. He joined the U.S. Army Reserves (still wearing a uniform) and enrolled in college, a requirement his parents set for enlistment. That detour sparked an interest in mental health, particularly PTSD. After retiring from service, he traded the badge for a new mission—helping others heal the mind. “I was still initially on track to be a cop but I became interested in the treatment of mental health,” Palumbo revealed. “I stuck with the psychology aspect.” Today, Palumbo is a licensed clinical social worker and owner of Northern New Jersey CBT in Denville, a practice specializing in anxiety and exposure therapy. Raised in Jefferson, he earned his master’s at the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work and trained with the International OCD Foundation and Albert Ellis Institute, completing mentorships in anxiety, OCD, ADHD, and related behavioral issues. Over time, he’s seen the demand for mental health services soar. “Covid was the demarcation point,” he said, noting that his schedule jumped from a 2.5-day workweek to five. “Phones were ringing off the hook.” And they haven’t stopped since. He currently runs his own practice with a clear focus on anxiety treatment. Palumbo uses exposure therapy to reduce symptoms of panic and OCD, offering what he calls “long-form and more traditional sessions.” “Anxiety is a big liar,” he explained. “My favorite thing to do out in the community is to see if anxiety is telling the truth.” He likens anxiety to a faulty alarm system: “It’s like a smoke detector going off when there’s no fire—it’s trying to be helpful.”

That’s where Palumbo steps in—helping clients retrain their minds and reclaim calm. On his blog, he describes a case involving a patient with OCD who feared spreading illness when dressing. “We went to the mall where he tried on clothes and didn’t have easy access to washing his hands...and we did it a second time for good measure.” Repeated exposure reduced the patient’s anxiety over time. While virtual therapy remains popular, Palumbo favors in-person sessions—especially for exposure work. As for AI, he approaches it with caution. “With OCD, people will often ask others for reassurance and that could be problematic with AI,” he explained. “Part of exposure therapy is reducing the problematic reassurances and AI is designed to be agreeable.” “You don’t want a therapist who agrees with you all the time. That’s not what you’re paying them for.” Palumbo also aims to fight lingering mental health stigma, especially within traditional cultures and religions. “Is the therapist going to tell you to do things against your religion?” he said. “No, my job is to help you live your faith the best as possible.” When he’s not helping patients conquer challenges, he’s nurturing growth in another way— through his hobbies and Italian heritage. Palumbo is a member of several Italian-American organizations and even maintains a garden at a historic Italian church in Newark. “It’s a fun hobby of preserving Italian-American culture and sharing it with the community.” He also enjoys time with his wife, Christine, a fellow psychologist.
