with his son whose desire to make art, from whatever material he could find, still flows through his veins today. You could say that Michel was destined to become the artist he is today; it's in his blood, not that it has been an easy path to follow. Michel recalls working in a warehouse when he had first come to America and couldn’t afford expensive canvas to paint on, so he would use the discarded cardboard and other materials to make his artwork. His creativity would not be extinguished. Michel credits his friend, Enrique Gonzalez, along with Michel’s wife, Nicole, for discovering his talent and propelling his career into what it is today. Michel’s distinctive and unique style has developed over the years and now “incorporates color, shapes, and layers to create the visually captivating work” that he showcases all over Colorado and throughout the country. Michel’s work takes a variety of forms and is accessible to all art lovers. His gallery collections, Colrz and Italia, both depict women of strength,

beauty, form, and emotions. Michel’s admiration of the female form, his respect for women, and his love for his wife are evident in every piece. Michel also puts his artwork on shirts, hoodies, and accessories. His pieces can also be found as prints as well. Where can you find Michel and his breathtaking work? Michel opened his new store in The Source Hotel’s Market Hall (3330 Brighton Blvd in Denver) on November 1st. LaVonta Bentley has been in love with football since he was four years old. His football career began in the backyard in Birmingham, Alabama, playing with his cousins and his friends. This backyard ball grew into a way of life for LaVonta. Football was not only an outlet for any stress or frustration, it was a critical means of staying out of trouble and avoiding the wrong crowd.

“Everything you do, it’s a process. You just have to trust in God and believe. We all have trials and tribulations and everyone has their own process, their own way.” Dreams of the NFL began to swirl in LaVonta’s mind when his Arlington Middle School football team won the 8th grade championships. That winning feeling has never left LaVonta. High school football involved moving schools from Parker High School to Jackson Olin (JO) High School. LaVonta and his family moved back to where his roots were, to the same high school, in fact, that his grandma attended. During his time at JO LaVonta sharpened his skills as a linebacker, a position he loves because of its physicality and, of course, because he “likes to hit”! LaVonta’s high school career launched him onto the collegiate stage and changed his life for good. Visiting colleges opened the world to LaVonta who had never left Birmingham before. He knew the opportunity to play college football would be the turning point in his life. LaVonta spent four incredible years at Clemson University. The family vibe of the coaches, the frequent check-ins, and guidance of the coaching staff put his, and his mom’s, mind at ease. He knew that Clemson was where he was meant to be. They say that when one door closes, another one opens. For LaVonta, that door was opened by Coach Prime. With just two years of eligibility left, LaVonta knew that a move to CU, would mean the coaching and exposure he needed to take

a shot at the big time, the NFL. One visit to Boulder told LaVonta all he needed to know about the winning mindset of the CU program. LaVonta describes his first impressions of Colorado and seeing the mountains for the first time as “feeling like he was in a movie”. “All the land and all the green was unreal,” he recalls. LaVonta was lucky enough to have an old teammate from home to connect with at CU, Jamar Montgomery. He helped LaVonta to settle into life in Colorado and at CU. When asked how he handles the media and attention that is currently swirling around the CU football program, LaVonta humbly answers, “I can just be me, do the work and go out and ball. I want to show the world what I can do.” There is not a doubt that the world will know LaVonta Bentley’s name. While LaVonta puts in the work every day on the field, he is also expanding his brand and influence off the field. He has created a clothing line of his TTP (Trust the Process) brand. MUSIC AND THE CHRISTMAS TREE “Oh Tannenbaum”, sung loudly and out of tune, carries the fresh tree down the cold, snowy mountain. Then “Mary’s Boy Child”, from the 1962 Harry Belafonte Christmas album, starts the decorating. Colorful lights first, just like dad did, precisely placed and preferably done alone. Next, the music of kids laughing and remembering the stories of each ornament hung is sweeter than the smoothest rendition of “White Christmas”. With the final touches applied, happy children in bed, my mind’s eye sees the “Silent Night” within the glittering beacon that is the Christmas tree. -Gloria -age 68

THE VERY BEST DAY You know that feeling when your eyes have barely opened, and yet you just can tell that there is magic in the air and that today is going to be a day unlike the others, unlike the humdrum of the everyday? Yes, that feeling…that is Christmas morning. When we are younger it means that Santa has come, that cousins are on their way, that tonight is the best dinner of the year. As a mom it means that there is joy like no other pouring out of my kiddos. It means that there are about to be more hugs than you can imagine, more people crammed into a kitchen than seems physically possible. CHRISTMAS Christmas means so much to me! My favorite part is seeing my family. I love running around and playing with my little cousins. I love eating Christmas Eve dinner. We always eat all the lucky Italian fishes. For dessert, we always have pizzelles (a type of Italian cookie), Honey cookies, and my Auntie Margaret’s pies. Then after dinner we have our yearly white elephant gift exchange. I always love seeing people get my gifts. As you can see, Christmas means a lot to me and my family. -Mary Grace-age 9

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

½ cup whole milk 1¼-oz. envelope active dry yeast 4 large egg yolks 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted, cooled, plus more 1/3 cup granulated sugar 1teaspoon kosher salt 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more

6 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped 1/3 cup (packed) light brown sugar 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon All-purpose flour (for surface) ¼ cup (½ stick) unsalted butter, room temperature • 1 large egg yolk • Granulated sugar (for sprinkling)

PREPARATION Dough Step 1: Heat milk in a small saucepan until warm. Transfer to a large bowl and whisk in yeast; let sit until foamy, 5–10 minutes. Step 2: Whisk in egg yolks, vanilla, and ½ cup butter. Add sugar, salt, and 3 cups flour; mix until a shaggy dough forms. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface until supple, smooth, and no longer shiny, 5–10 minutes. Step 3: Transfer to a large buttered bowl. Cover and let sit in a warm place until doubled in size, 1½–2½ hours.

Filling And Assembly Step 4: Mix chocolate, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl. Step 5: Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface; divide into three portions. Shape each into a 12”-long rope. Roll out each rope to a 12x6” rectangle about ⅛” thick. Brush with butter and top with chocolate mixture, pressing gently. Roll up to form a log; pinch seam to seal. Step 6: Place logs, seam side down, side by side on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Pinch logs together at one end; braid, then pinch ends together and tuck under. Cover loosely and let sit in a warm place until 1½ times larger, 1–2 hours. Step 7: Preheat oven to 350°. Beat egg yolk with 1 Tbsp. water in a small bowl. Brush dough with egg wash; sprinkle with granulated sugar. Bake until top is golden brown and “Babkallah” sounds hollow when bottom is tapped, 35–45 minutes. Let cool on a wire rack.
