A Season For Giving

The holiday season invites us to pause, reflect on the year, and embrace gratitude by finding ways to give back. For me, it also stirs cherished memories of growing up here in the Denton area. Some of my earliest and most meaningful lessons in generosity came from my grandparents. As a child, I often tagged along with my grandfather, Richard “Dick” Stewart, who once served as Mayor of Denton, to his service club meetings with Rotary, Kiwanis, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Sitting beside him, I watched and listened to pillars of the community at work. Those moments instilled in me a lifelong belief in pouring back into a community so that it can flourish for generations.

My Denton roots run deep. My parents met at Denton High School, and my father spent decades building a business here, crafting luxury custom cabinets. His work not only graced the homes of neighbors, but also reflected a spirit of excellence and care. Those lessons in tedious craftsmanship, hard work, and service carried me through the years I spent away in Louisiana and South Carolina, where I worked as a television news anchor and writer. Yet, the pull of home was always strong. Returning to Denton has been a chance to rejoin the community that shaped me and to give back in new ways.

Becoming the editor of Denton City Lifestyle is nothing short of a dream come true. This magazine is more than pages and photographs. It is a platform to celebrate the people, businesses, and organizations that make Denton extraordinary. In this Holidays & Giving issue, you’ll discover local businesses that are not only growing but also making a meaningful impact. You’ll find opportunities to give back, right here at home. Let’s share the spirit of generosity with neighbors, families, and organizations that need it most.

This season, my hope is that we all continue to carry forward Denton’s legacy of giving. From my family to yours, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

With gratitude,

December 2025

Holiday Glow

PRIME CITY SPA’S GUIDE TO LOOKING & FEELING YOUR BEST

The holidays bring sparkle, celebration, and plenty of reason to shine, but they can also leave us feeling stretched thin. Between the bustle of gatherings, gift shopping, and yearend deadlines, self-care often falls to the bottom of the list. At Prime City Spa in Corinth, owner Imelda Ashitey reminds us that wellness and beauty go hand in hand. With a philosophy based in holistic care, her team helps clients look radiant, feel refreshed, and embrace the season with confidence.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN PRIME CITY SPA, AND WHAT MAKES YOUR APPROACH TO BEAUTY AND WELLNESS UNIQUE?

My inspiration stems from a deep passion for holistic beauty and wellness. I wanted to create a sanctuary where clients could escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and focus on self-care. What sets our approach apart is the integration of personalized treatments tailored to individual needs, blending traditional techniques with modern innovations. This unique combination not only enhances physical beauty but also nurtures mental and emotional well-being, fostering a holistic sense of health.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MOST POPULAR OR SIGNATURE TREATMENTS, ESPECIALLY DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON?

During the holiday season, some of our most popular treatments include rejuvenating facial packages and luxurious body scrubs, designed to hydrate and revitalize the skin after a long year. Our signature hot stone massage is also a favorite, offering deep relaxation and stress relief. It’s perfect for those seeking to unwind. We also feature festive-themed treatments, such as the “Holiday Glow” facial, which incorporates seasonal ingredients to refresh and brighten the complexion.

ARE THERE SPECIFIC TREATMENTS OR PRODUCTS YOU RECOMMEND FOR ACHIEVING THAT “HOLIDAY GLOW”?

For that coveted “holiday glow,” I recommend treatments that focus on exfoliation and hydration, such as our signature facials with vitamin C serums to brighten the skin. Products containing hyaluronic acid or glycerin are excellent for locking in moisture. They keep skin plump and radiant. A light-reflecting primer before makeup can also enhance that glow, making skin appear luminous and fresh. At home, regular use of a gentle exfoliating scrub helps maintain that holiday sparkle.

YOU’VE BUILT A REPUTATION FOR EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE AND CARE. HOW DOES YOUR TEAM GO ABOVE AND BEYOND FOR CLIENTS?

Our team prides itself on delivering exceptional service by creating a welcoming, personalized experience for every client. We take time to listen to their needs and preferences, ensuring each treatment is tailored to enhance their unique beauty and wellness goals. Going above and beyond means offering follow-up care recommendations, personalized product suggestions, and a relaxing atmosphere that makes every visit feel special. We believe in building lasting relationships with our clients, making them feel truly valued and appreciated.

ARE THERE ANY NEW TREATMENTS, TECHNOLOGIES, OR SKINCARE LINES YOU’RE ESPECIALLY EXCITED ABOUT HEADING INTO THE NEW YEAR?

As we head into the new year, I’m especially excited to introduce advanced skincare technologies such as LED light therapy and oxygen facials, which deliver remarkable results in skin rejuvenation. We’re also expanding our product lines to feature more organic, eco-friendly formulations that reflect our commitment to holistic wellness.

“Taking time for yourself is not a luxury. It’s a necessity. Embrace the importance of self-love.”
“Nurturing yourself allows you to show up fully for others, so don’t hesitate to invest in your well-being. This holiday season, make self-care a priority and let it be a source of joy and rejuvenation.”

DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL PROMOTIONS, EVENTS, OR GIFT IDEAS FOR THE HOLIDAYS THAT OUR READERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?

For the holiday season, we’re offering exciting promotions, including gift cards and special package deals that make perfect gifts for loved ones. We’re also hosting a holiday open house where clients can enjoy mini-treatments and exclusive product discounts. In addition, our curated gift baskets featuring popular skincare items are ideal for anyone looking to treat themselves or others.

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU SHARE WITH READERS WHO ARE LOOKING TO PRIORITIZE SELF-CARE AND WELLNESS THIS SEASON?

Remember, taking time for yourself is not a luxury. It’s a necessity. Embrace the importance of self-love, whether through regular treatments, mindful practices, or simply carving out quiet moments in your day. Nurturing yourself allows you to show up fully for others, so don’t hesitate to invest in your well-being. This holiday season, make selfcare a priority and let it be a source of joy and rejuvenation.

Lake Cities Hope

A Season of Service

For Kristy Bleau, service isn’t just a calling. It’s a lifeline. A 911 dispatch supervisor serving in a new role as the mayor of Lake Dallas, Kristy once battled debilitating depression. She found her way forward by pouring into others, starting with small community projects on social media. Those efforts grew so quickly that four years ago she founded Lake Cities Hope, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting families in the Lake Cities community.

Today, Lake Cities Hope runs eight programs year-round, powered by the generosity of citizens and guided by a dedicated board, including Kelly Pickens and Jamie Spear. Kristy credits their leadership, and the support of community partners, for helping the nonprofit grow. Rachel Fitzpatrick also takes a lead role in holiday programming, ensuring every detail runs smoothly.

From backpack drives that outfit children with new shoes and supplies, to luncheons that bring hundreds of seniors together for a holiday meal, the mission is simple: no neighbor should feel forgotten.

This December, their signature initiative, Operation Christmas Hope, pairs with Mission Turkey to brighten the holidays. Local retailers like Linnybird Bake Shop, Corinth Veterinary Clinic, and area dealerships host “giving trees,” where shoppers can pull tags listing the wants and needs of children who live in or attend school in Lake Cities. Each participating family also receives a Thanksgiving meal box, distributed in partnership with local churches. Last year alone, the program served more than 300 children and 100 families.

For Kristy, the work is deeply personal. “I just saw a need and tried to fill it,” she says. “We had it in our hearts to create something lasting for Lake Cities. We are just organizers. It’s the community that always shows up.”

To get involved, donate, or adopt a family, visit Lake Cities Hope on Facebook or go to www.lakecitieshope. org to learn more.

Jamie Spear, Rachel Fitzpatrick, Kelly Pickens, and Kristy Bleau join forces to bring holiday joy through Operation Christmas Hope.

The Denton Chamber of Commerce recently hosted its 116th Annual Celebration & Awards, presented by SVN | VERUS Commercial, marking more than a century of community collaboration, business excellence, and local leadership. The event brought together business owners, city leaders, and community partners for an evening filled with recognition, networking, and celebration.

Held in true Denton style, the evening showcased the spirit of connection that defines the city’s business community. Guests enjoyed live music, great food, and plenty of laughter as they celebrated another successful year of growth and innovation. Smiles filled the room as familiar faces and new connections came together to reflect on the Chamber’s ongoing mission to advocate, educate, and collaborate on behalf of local businesses.

A highlight of the evening was the moment of recognition for board members Marty Rivers and Brian Danhof, who were honored for their outstanding service and dedication to the Chamber’s mission. Their leadership and commitment have played a vital role in advancing Denton’s business community.

The celebration also marked an important transition in leadership as Seth Morgan, outgoing board chair, officially passed the gavel to Jeremy Fykes, who will serve as the new board chair. Both leaders were applauded for their vision and enthusiasm in guiding the Chamber’s initiatives.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, Sunday Wreckers provided vibrant live entertainment, while Headshot Headquarters captured the joy and energy of the evening with professional photography. Guests left feeling inspired and energized for the year ahead, reminded of the power of community and collaboration in driving Denton forward.

The 116th Annual Celebration was more than an awards ceremony. It was a tribute to the unity and resilience of Denton’s business community. As the Chamber looks ahead to another year of progress, one thing remains clear: Denton means business and together we all shine brighter.

advocacy, education, and collaboration. Each honoree’s contributions serve as a reminder that Denton’s greatest strength lies in its people working together for the common good.

The 2025 Advocate Award, sponsored by Peterbilt Motors Company, was presented to KERA for its unwavering commitment to North Texas. By acquiring and preserving the Denton Record-Chronicle, KERA ensured that our community’s stories remain rooted in local hands. Its dedication to public service, informed dialogue, and community connection is advocacy in its truest form.

The 2025 Educate Award, sponsored by the Denton Record-Chronicle, was presented to Sharon Roland and Reacting to Opioid Overdose. Roland turned a family tragedy into a life-saving mission by equipping the community with awareness, training, and tools to respond to opioid overdoses. Her efforts directly saved a Denton teen’s life this year and led to Denton County’s first naloxone vending machine at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios. Her work ensures our community is not just informed, but prepared.

The 2025 Collaborate Award, sponsored by PlainsCapital Bank, honored Hillwood Properties for its transformative work on the Landmark master-planned community. From the start, Hillwood prioritized collaboration by hosting listening sessions with local leaders and organizations

to ensure Landmark reflects Denton’s unique identity. By engaging community voices and focusing on long-term impact, Hillwood set a new benchmark for development that strengthens quality of life and fosters sustainable growth.

The Chamber also celebrated individuals whose enthusiasm and volunteer spirit elevate every initiative. Rod McLain of the Denton Record-Chronicle received the 2025 Ambassador of the Year Award, sponsored by Stag Commercial Real Estate, for his

tireless dedication to welcoming new members. Michael Tull of Guaranty Bank & Trust earned the 2025 Chuck Carpenter Volunteer of the Year Award, sponsored by Huffines Kia Corinth, for his warmth, humor, and willingness to serve wherever needed. Together, McLain and Tull embody the spirit of connection that defines Denton.

The evening culminated with the 2025 Otis L. Fowler Award, the Chamber’s highest honor, sponsored by SVN | VERUS Commercial, presented to Denny and Mary Aldridge. For decades, the Aldridges have exemplified leadership, service, and generosity. Through Denny’s stewardship of James Wood Autopark Inc. and Mary’s tireless volunteerism, they have made an enduring impact on Denton. Their legacy of quiet strength and servant leadership continues to inspire all who call Denton home.

Holiday Entertaining Boards

The holidays are here and entertaining is in full swing. If you are looking for the perfect appetizer to easily feed a crowd these simple and beautiful boards are sure to please.

Tips for creating the perfect board:

• Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first.

• Be sure to have enough to fill the space. It is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more.

• Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement.

• Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.

Holiday Wreath Charcuterie Board

• Fig Jelly

• Honey

• Variety of Cheeses

• Salami or meat of choice

• Olives (provide a variety)

• Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios and any favorite nut

• Grapes, berries, persimmon

• Crackers

Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.

Holiday Traditions That Warm Our Hearts

The holiday season is all about connection, joy, and the little traditions that make it truly magical. From festive family rituals to timeless traditions, the Denton City Lifestyle team is sharing a few of our favorite ways to celebrate the season.

THOMAS TONKIN

(CO-PUBLISHER)

I absolutely love Christmas time! Cuddling on the couch with my family, watching our favorite Christmas movies, and snacking on all kinds of festive treats. I love sipping on hot cocoa, piling into the car, and driving through the neighborhoods to see all the beautiful houses glowing with twinkling lights. It’s the most heartwarming time of the year.

MICHELLE TONKIN (PUBLISHER)

My favorite Christmas memories are made spending time with family. My mom serves up a delicious holiday ham, and my sister and I help with all the fixings, especially our family favorite, sweet rice. We enjoy playing games together like the Christmas pickle, bunko, and our go-to card game, Hand and Foot. The moments of laughter, competition, and togetherness make the season special.

Every Christmas for the past 12 years, my family and I would sit by the fireplace with our cat, Milo, and turn Yule Log on the TV. After opening presents, we’d toss all the wrapping paper into a pile, and Milo would leap right in to play. Those moments of laughter and warmth always make Christmas morning feel complete.

JESSICA

CRANDALL LAWRENCE (EDITOR)

Our family loves to travel during Christmas break. It’s also a beautiful time to serve. We enjoy caroling at the nursing home, and I play the harp for church and local events.
