GREETINGS TO ALL THE DEL MARTIAN DADS AND DUDES, Our June issue is about the Dudes of Del Mar, spotlighting the stellar guys in our town. You’ll learn about several men who have been in the community for decades, many of whom are proud Del Mar Union school alumni and Torrey Pines grads. Since June is a month where we celebrate our dads and impactful men in our lives, most of our featured guys are fathers themselves. As dad to sons Dillon, 7, and Benjamin, 3, it felt great to showcase three groups of fathers and sons throughout the issue. Check out “Jewelers and Brewers” to learn more about the Kolls, dad Malcolm and his sons, Charles and Richard, who own Del Mar’s first brewery, Viewpoint, as well as Charles Koll Jewelers. Also in this issue is our Back Stage piece with Pacific Records where we talk about the musical roots of the Witkin family—from dad, Joe, performing at the Woodstock Music Festival in 1969 directly after Jimi Hendrix to his son, Brian, founding the first iteration of current music label Pacific Records while he was a student at Torrey Pines. WHEN YOU WALK THROUGH THE DOORS OF WOKOU RAMEN & YAKITORI, YOU CAN INSTANTLY SMELL THE YAKITORI BEING SLOW-COOKED OVER THE OPEN-FLAME GRILL. Yakitori is Japanese street food that consists of skewers of vegetables and meat. The menu of ramen and yakitori in addition to the raw aesthetic is what truly makes it a unique restaurant Del Mar native Joey Pena, a graduate of Torrey Pines High School runs the establishment. With the help of partner James Langley it became clear there was a need for ramen in North County, and the partners knew this location was perfect. “We chose this location because there is a niche that is not being met here," he says. The colorful and eye-catching air-brushed murals created by local artists Espana Garcia and Scott Holland really tie the fusion of Asian cultures together. You can even catch a glimpse of food being prepared in the somewhat open kitchen.

03. Sizzling yakitori plates like octopus leg on a skewer is excellent to order if you’re feeling adventurous. If not, then you can’t go wrong with ramen or the various Japanese-style plates like wouko fried rice they offer up seven days a week. Ditch your usual taco Tuesday for Wokou’s baos and beer specials, or come out and cheers to the weekend for “Friday Night Feels” and enjoy late night food and drink specials with the guys while listening to some live tunes by local musicians. But Pacific Records’ diverse roster is a major strength, Pickslay says. “I like to think of our label as ‘lifestyle specific’,” says Brian. “We all live in coastal communities, surf, skate and enjoy a laidback lifestyle, and I think our name, brand, image, etc. all echo that beach lifestyle. There's a reason we're not headquartered in L.A...I'm proud to say I was born and raised in Del Mar...I still live near the coast in North County and surf 15th street on the regular.” PROUD PAPA As for Joe, who was a Teenager in Love on the first Sha Na Na album, today he’s a jubilant dad with serious love for his son. What’s been most rewarding about being involved in Pacific Records is “seeing Brian follow his dream, and carrying on my love of music,” he says.

Home Team: A teaching job motivated a move to Del Mar—from New York—for soap star Matthew Tilker’s professor dad in 1973. “Back then, Del Mar was filled with professors, teachers, psychologists and scientists—with a few beach-bum types thrown into the mix. It was a really great place to grow up." Today, Matthew helms luxe soap brand Mistral, whose hometown can arguably be found in the south of France. That’s where Matthew—during a fellowship studying alternative cancer therapies—caught the soap bug, after meeting a maker who crafted olive-oil soaps using a 300-year-old process. FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH WITH JALAPEÑO SLAW INGREDIENTS (SANDWICH) 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon ground paprika 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Cayenne pepper, to taste Boneless, skinless chicken breasts Vegetable oil (as needed) Sesame seed bun Pickles

DIRECTIONS 1. Mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder and cayenne pepper together in a shallow bowl. 2. Fill your skillet with oil to about 1-inch deep and heat to 350 degrees. 3. Coat your chicken breasts in the flour and seasoning mixture, then carefully place them into the heated oil. 4. Cook until golden brown with an internal temperature of 165 degrees. 5. Lightly toast your sesame seed bun, then top with pickles, fried chicken breast and slaw to taste.

FOR THE SLAW Combine mayo, hot sauce, garlic and dill pickle juice with shredded red cabbage, pickled onions and candied jalapeños.
