ello April...

Dan Austin | Dan.Austin@LifestylePubs.com PUBLICATION DIRECTOR

The recent rains have ensured spring’s bounty welcomes us in full bloom here in Del Mar and Carmel Valley…Always amazes me how much we have to be thankful for! From world-class resorts to hyper local businesses, we can find everything within a few minutes in our neighborhoods.

In this issue, we have several locals showing us how we can truly celebrate our fantastic surroundings – from the fresh pressed juices at Elixir to the vibrant salads at Farmer’s Fix. The Healthy Living Festival is back again giving you every reason to NOT find an excuse to embrace wellness in your life. Add to that the tennis and golf pro tips from our experts at Lomas Santa Fe, and you are good to go! Chef Casey Thompson of The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe and Chef Carl Schroeder of MARKET restaurant + bar chime in with their seasonal favorites, and we have some locally crafted libations for you as well. A visit to the Farmers Market is sufficient proof of nature’s gift to our coastal communities. And the beautiful Saltwater Farm provides an exquisite space for any special event you can imagine.

very Saturday afternoon, rain or shine, a parade of local families, hand-holding couples, discerning foodies, California-dreaming tourists and more

bike, scooter, walk, jog and carpool to one of the most popular attractions in town: the open-air Del Mar Farmers Market. Reusable bags and bike baskets quickly fill with fresh, certified organic, locally grown fruit and vegetables, eggs, fresh-cut flowers and plants. Add fine meats and seafood, international cuisine, globally sourced gifts and regularly scheduled entertainment to the mix—all set against a stunning ocean backdrop—and you pretty much have the quintessential So Cal afternoon. But above and beyond its naturally healthy allure, the market offers even more. Since its founding in 1986 by a small group of visionary Del Mar residents, the market has raised more than $200,000 to give back to the local community. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, vendors keep only enough of their sales proceeds to cover their costs and provide a small stipend to help with the market’s overhead. Any remaining profits are then used to help support local causes. “When the market first started 25 years ago, the idea of farm-to-table was a fairly new concept,” explains board member Nicole Holliday. “The Del Mar Farmers Market was one of the first to debut in Southern California, with the goal of inspiring healthy living and supporting local farmers. The founders then realized they wanted to do even more and turned the market into a nonprofit, launching a

legacy of giving back that we are proud to continue today.” This year alone, the market will give $10,000 back to the community. These donations will be used to purchase a new waste bin for the city, help fund the new lifeguard station, grow the efforts of the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy, support the Del Mar Library, and help the efforts of Del Mar Community Connections. There is also the Del Mar Farmers Market scholarship fund, named in honor of Mary Maciel, one of the original longtime vendors, to help college students who work at the farmers’ market further their education. “This is a place you can come get berries picked that morning, and talk to the farmers who picked them,” says Holliday. “It’s a way for people to eat fresh food, support local farmers, chitchat with neighbors, and support something that’s giving back to the Del Mar community.” While the Del Mar Farmers Market continues to take place every Saturday from 1-4 pm, it recently debuted a new location at Upper Shores Park (225 9th Street) between Camino Del Mar and Stratford Court. A 25th anniversary celebration is currently being planned for September, with details to be announced soon. DelMarFarmersMarket.org April 2017 | Del Mar Lifestyle

fter 17 years establishing Americana as a Del Mar Village institution, owner

Randy Gruber now introduces our community to Elixir, the new juice bar and health food venue he recently launched right next to his first restaurant. “The space became available and was offered to me. It seemed like a good idea for a juice bar, considering the environment around here. You are in Southern California, people are healthy minded, they cycle, do yoga, work out, so it made sense. There isn’t really anything like it in the village.” Elixir offers super food options, local and organic ingredients, and many more hot food preparations than you’d expect to find in a typical juicery. Following a hybrid model, Gruber offers vegan but also carnivore options, proteins that are not necessarily solely plantbased, ancient grain bowls, and more.

Picture, if you will, a special event in a rustic barn setting; gardens, walkways, mini barns, and numerous outdoor vignettes allow for a unique and memorable experience in our oceanside community of Del Mar. The historic charm of Saltwater Farm lends itself to the barn being built from the salvaged wood of the Stratford Inn’s natatorium. Imagine a farmhouse table set for 20 of your nearest and dearest under the beams of this historic treasure and think of Del Mar’s original saltwater plunge of times past. Careful consideration to the history and rustic nature of the property equates to attention, detail and restoration like no other. TIPS FROM THE PROS

Inspired By

STEP UP YOUR GAME G

olf is considered by many to be the most difficult sport to play. The precision, timing, and coordination required to

hit a golf ball to its intended target can lead to frustration because of the challenge presented. The good news is that learning to execute and play “good” or even “great" shots is well worth the time and effort it takes to be able to do so.

PHIL MACHAMER

PGA DIRECTOR OF GOLF AT LOMAS SANTA FE COUNTRY CLUB, SHARES SOME GOLFING GUIDANCE:

BE WILLING TO CHANGE : Take a lesson from a PGA or LPGA Professional. They are trained to help you learn the fundamentals that are necessary to grow your game. Be willing to follow the instruction you are given, and this usually requires you to do something different. In the 30 years that I have been a golf instructor, many students have asked me to help them improve. But many times they have also added that they didn’t want me to change their swing. Be willing to try something new and different, and be willing to give the change a 30 day chance. Don’t give up on a change until you have given it enough time to sink in.

DEVELOP A PRACTICE SCHEDULE : If you want to improve any skill, you must devote some time to practicing. Golf is no exception. Pick certain days and times just for practice, even if it’s one day a week for an hour. Practice should include putting, chipping, sand play, and your full swing with all clubs. Devote at least 50 percent of your time to the short game; you will be doing more putting and chipping. Make a plan to practice with purpose because Phil Machamer, PGA Director of Golf at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club 36

scheduling practice time helps us commit.

COME VISIT ME: As you have probably noticed, I didn’t offer any specific instruction here but offered guidance on getting swing help, and emphasized the importance of creating and maintaining a practice schedule. However, on Friday May 5th, 2017, I will be offering a two-hour golf class that will be open to anyone reading this article. This complimentary class is from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., and will cover the mechanics of the golf swing, putting stroke, pitching and chipping motion. Call the Lomas Santa Fe Golf Shop (858-7551547 ext. 121) to register. The class will be limited to the first 10 people to register beginning April 15th - simply mention this article.

WOODY YOCOM,

DIRECTOR OF TENNIS AT LOMAS SANTA FE COUNTRY CLUB, SHARES SOME TENNIS TIPS:

OVERLOOKED ADVICE: In my opinion, one of the most overlooked teaching advice is using your non-dominant hand to bring back your racquet and turn your body. Every touring pro, college player and competitive junior does this when hitting a forehand but most club players do not. Using your non-dominant hand to bring back the racquet will make you use your core when hitting, giving you more pace with less effort on your arm. Here, at Lomas, all our teaching pros work on proper technique and hitting with your non-dominant hand is one of them.

FINDING THE RIGHT RACQUET: Selecting the right tennis racquet for you and your game can be overwhelming not only because of the number of styles and options but the many different brands that manufacture racquets. Let's look at some general options:

Woody Yocom, Director of Tennis at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club

BASELINE- A heavy racquet will help generate more mass behind the hit. I suggest the Babolat Strike.

ALL COURT PLAYER- Medium weighted racquet for versatility. I recommend the Babolat Pure Drive or Pure Aero.

NET PLAYER/DOUBLES PLAYERS–

Look for a light racquet with a larger hitting surface.
