Holiday Cheer The Holidays - one of the most anticipated times of the year. A time of hustle and bustle - family memories, celebrating with old friends. It's a time of traditions - some old, some new. What I love most about the holidays is the timeless classics like that song that just brings back happy memories or shopping in your favorite store for that perfect gift for someone special! One of my favorite memories growing up was the much anticipated Holiday Open House my parents would throw every Christmas Eve. Dozens of friends, family and neighbors would swing through for cookies, cocktails and stories. Cousins and casual friends would call at our doors to celebrate. Togetherness, sharing food, and fun and laughter...I don't think I truly valued it as much as a child as I do today. From our family to yours, here's wishing you abundant love and happiness this holiday season!

here’s a unique and unparalleled bond between a horse and a rider. “I love the connection that you get with the horses, and figuring out all of their special quirks that they all have,” says 16-year-old Alexus Willson of Ramona.

This year marks the second in a row that Willson has earned High Point Junior Rider in San Diego from the Greater San Diego Hunter Jumper Association. The title is given to the rider with the highest total show points accumulated throughout the year. “I’ve been riding forever, but showing since 2009,” says Willson. In just a few short years, her track record is already impressive. She has been Grand Circuit Champion at Thermal and High Point Junior Amateur at Del Mar Nationals. She performs many local shows at Del Mar Show Park and the Fairgrounds. The shows include jumping and equestrian performances; riders compete for ribbons, trophies, medals, and prize money. Each show typically costs a rider $1,000 to $1,500 in fees; an expense that adds up quickly. For the past year, Willson has been sponsored by Dr. Tarkan Sidal, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who owns Torrey Pines

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, located in Del Mar/Carmel Valley. “I wanted to give back to the community,” says Dr. Sidal. He moved from San Francisco to San Diego in 2012, and in July 2015 continued the legacy at Torrey Pines Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery practice. “I don’t ride horses, but I liked her ambition.” He relates to her devotion to the sport; he recalls all the studying and training he underwent in his early career. “In a sense we each work hard, striving to reach our goals.” Having a sponsor has been key to Willson’s riding success. “He covers one show a month, and we’re super fortunate for that,” says Willson’s mother Jennifer. Before Dr. Sidal’s sponsorship, the Willsons would often have to sell a horse to enter a show. “She wouldn’t have won Rider of the Year if she didn’t have that sponsor.” Aside from her mother, Willson also trained with Hap Hanson, a renowned winning grand

A Delicious Party to Share Holiday Cheer

t’s the most wonderful time of the year! Holiday parties, decorations and merrimaking around every corner. What inspires you and gets you into the holiday spirit? It could be a song or movie or perhaps it’s a festive cocktail that stirs memories of holidays past. For many, it’s the smells of the holidays, specifically grandma’s sugar cookies baking in the oven or mom’s freshly baked apple crumb pie in the kitchen, begging to be sliced and topped with old fashioned vanilla bean ice cream. It’s with this festive spirit that we hosted a cookie exchange with close friends and loved ones. A casual gathering where we shared our fond memories of the holidays, the recipes for our favorite treats, and laughter. Some of our perennial favorites made the cut: snowball cookies, iced sugar cookies, sugared plums and raspberry almond rugelach. However, we discovered some new cookies which will definitely be added to our recipe collection: chewy ginger cookies, peppermint bark and rosemary shortbread cookies. Of course, there were libations to be enjoyed, which always makes for holiday cheer: Winter Sangria is a seasonal twist on the summer favorite and Spiced Vanilla Pear Cider because it is traditional but fun, and smells divine as it mulls...it could be served minus the bourbon. How many cookies actually made it home to share with our families? We will never tell, but each cookie was amazing. Enjoy! 34

SNOWBALLS (RUSSIAN TEA CAKES) INGREDIENTS:

2 1/4 cups all purpose flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1 cup butter at room temperature, 1/2 cup powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 3/4 cup finely chopped almonds toasted, powdered sugar PREPARATION:

Preheat oven to 400°F. Sift flour and salt together. Cream butter in large bowl until light, then gradually add 1/2 cup sugar and beat until fluffy. Add vanilla. Mix in dry ingredients in three batches. Mix in almonds. Refrigerate at least one hour or up to 12 hours. Form dough into 1-inch balls. Space 1-inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake until just firm to touch, about 15 minutes. Transfer to rack and cool slightly. Roll in powdered sugar. Cool completely. Roll cookies in powdered sugar again. Adapted from Epicurious.com

PEPPERMINT BARK INGREDIENTS:

30 crushed peppermint hard candies divided, 1 1/2 pounds milk chocolate candy coarsely chopped, 1 1/2 pounds white chocolate chopped, 1 teaspoon oil-based peppermint flavoring or to taste PREPARATION:

Spread 1/3 of peppermint candy over 9x13-inch baking pan lined with wax paper. Melt milk chocolate in top of double boiler, stirring frequently and scraping down sides with a rubber spatula to avoid scorching, just until melted. Pour melted chocolate over peppermint candy in prepared pan. Sprinkle 1/3 of the candy on top of milk chocolate. Keep aside until set, about 30 minutes. Melt white chocolate in the top of double boiler as above, stir in the oil-based peppermint flavoring. Pour white chocolate over the milk chocolate, then sprinkle the remaining 1/3 peppermint candy on top. Keep aside until set, about one hour. Cut or break into pieces to serve. ULTIMATE GINGER COOKIES

INGREDIENTS:

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger, 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt, 1 cup dark brown sugar lightly packed, 1/4 cup vegetable oil, 1/3 cup unsulfured molasses, 1 extra-large egg at room temperature, 1 1/4 cups chopped crystallized ginger (6 ounces), granulated sugar for rolling the cookies PREPARATION:

Preheat the oven to 3500 and line two sheet pans with parchment paper. In a large bowl, sift together the first seven ingredients, then whisk together. With an electric mixer with the paddle attachment, beat the brown sugar, oil, and molasses on medium for five minutes. On low, add egg, and beat one minute. Scrape the bowl with rubber spatula and beat for one more minute. On low, slowly add the dry ingredients to the bowl, mix on medium speed for two minutes. Add the crystallized ginger and mix until combined. Roll each cookie into a 1 3/4-inch ball and flatten them lightly with your fingers. Press entire cookie in granulated sugar and place them on sheet pans. Bake for exactly 13 minutes. Let the cookies cool on the sheets for 1-2 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

INGREDIENTS:

2 quarts pear juice (no sugar added), 2 cinnamon sticks, 1/4 tsp nutmeg, 1 star anise, 1 vanilla bean pod, Rum or Bourbon (optional) PREPARATION:

Add juice and spices to a large soup pot or crockpot. Slice vanilla bean pod in half lengthwise and toss in pot. On low heat, bring the cider up to a simmer, whisking often. he Porsche Panamera filled a major void in the world of automobile enthusiasts upon its official unveiling in 2009.

Further solidifying its historical, brain-engraving slogan, “Porsche. There is no substitute,” the German automobile superpower debuted its first four-door, luxury sports car named after the renowned Carrera Panamericana race during the early ‘50s. It aimed to embrace its famed 911 Carrera, while stretching out the body with an additional pair of second-row entrances made to truly pamper a quartet of adults. It worked. Of course, there was the backlash of the automaker’s purists who feared Porsche’s prestigious reputation of making rear-engine performance cars primarily for a driver and a lucky passenger would be compromised by the addition of this new, elongated family member. Throughout the years, however, the noise from naysayers became virtually inaudible due to the critical acclaim and booming demand of the Panamera. Certainly, subtle augmentations to its numerous trims

The 2017 addressed this with a sleeker, more creased backside; raised bumper; and a sexy LED light bar embedded between the taillights. But that was just the beginning. Other body enhancements feature a longer wheelbase, lowered roofline, and with certain models, an expanded retractable rear spoiler. Inside, there is a redesigned dashboard embellished with two 7-inch screens swapping out the dials, a centrally located 12.3inch touchscreen to operate infotainment, and Apple CarPlay to mention a few tech upgrades. Along with its improved physical features, the all-new transmission and engine configurations will truly bring the Panamera the closest it has ever been to a bonafide luxury sports car for four. ith the 2016 holiday season here, most of us look forward to spending quality time with our families and loved ones. But

for some couples, this time of year may be filled with disappointment, anger, and financial anxiety. Statistics show more people file for divorce in January than any other month of the year. In terms of finances, there are few things more damaging than an ugly and expensive divorce. But even amicable couples will often experience a loss in living standards as a result. Assets must be divided and household income that used to support one residence must now support two. The holiday season is stressful enough. If you are contemplating separation or already in the process of divorce during this time, here are some tips to reduce your financial anxiety and look forward to the holidays, knowing that you have planned well in advance: 1. Begin assembling your team of advisors. At a minimum, the

team should include a therapist and certified divorce financial analyst (CDFA). The latter is imperative if you don’t fully understand your current financial situation or are worried you won’t be able to thrive financially after divorce. 2. Gather and organize your family’s financial documents. Obtain

the most recent mortgage, retirement, and brokerage account statements, your 2014 and 2015 tax returns, and a schedule of your monthly income and expenses. If you don’t have accurate data, it will be difficult to determine how to divide assets fairly and negotiate child and, potentially, spousal support.

3. Don’t let legal costs get out of control. Consider using a medi-

Along with all that joy often comes a guilty feeling that maybe we’re over doing it, with food and drink of the wrong quantity and wrong type. So along comes January 2nd and we make that annual “New Year’s Resolution”. Many of us do so year after year. If we repeat the same resolution, it gets harder each year to be successful with our annual goals. No matter the habit, we conclude the holiday season with a pledge to do better in the coming year. Well, here’s an idea…What if we don’t wait until all the holidays are over before beginning

our upcoming New Year’s resolutions? Instead of calling these resolutions “New Year’s resolutions”, how about calling them “end-of-the-year resolutions”, putting them into effect perhaps on December 1st or 15th. One potential benefit is that it might not take nearly as much effort to continue keeping the resolution throughout the coming new year, if we begin the program sooner than later. In other words, if your new habit or discipline is successful during the holidays themselves, when temptations are so much stronger, it seems reasonable that you’ll have an easier time in January and February, when temptations are fewer. Please don’t think that I don’t want people

to enjoy the holidays. I wish us all the joy of wonderful family gatherings, parties with friends, and great holiday outings, that we’ve come to expect this time of year. But, if you are a person who plans to make one or more New Year’s resolutions anyway, why not try starting a little earlier this year? Maybe you’ll find that they work better than ever before. Happy Holidays to us all!
