What’s on your bucket list?

he spirit of adventure is what drives me each day to learn, discover, explore! I am thrilled to feature some amazing adventures and stories this month. From zip lining for the first time over a decade ago in Costa Rica, backroads adventures in the mountains of Spain, wine tasting and eating our way through Italy to hiking the Grand Canyon, I've been blessed to have had many adventures in this life. Taking to the skies and learning to fly is one adventure I've started and look forward to completing in the future. As a child, I used to love maps. Of everything from local hiking trails to local topographical maps with hidden secrets and places waiting to be explored. As I grew older, I realized how, both, big and small our world is. Make the most of each day and what adventure awaits you - which road will you choose? What’s on your bucket list? Many of us are lucky to have traveled to different parts of the world, but what we have here in Del Mar and often a drive away is something special that is worth exploring. When I feel the itch for adventure, I like to explore the hiking trails at Torrey Pines; while there, I cannot help but notice the action at the gliderport, one of my son’s favorite destinations. Maybe I should put paragliding on my bucket list? In keeping with the spirit of adventure, I challenge you to get out of your comfort zone and do something adventurous - this could mean going to a different restaurant for some, or signing up to run your first 5k or beginning to hike. However, if you fancy yourself an explorer, maybe this is kayaking through Olympic National Park, mountaineering through Mt. Shasta, rock climbing El Capitan or rafting down the Colorado - Definitely book that trip and start training because there really is no better time than the present to cross those adventures off your bucket list. ree parking at the beach can be difficult during the summer months and weekends but there is additional paid parking at the bottom of the hill and on the other side of the rail tracks. Torrey Pines trail has been designed for your enjoyment. It is open enough that you can immerse in the beauty of nature without worrying about bumping into others. There is plenty of diversity to make the hike a challenge. The hike uphill gives you a long view of Carmel Valley and vicinities. The walk down to the beach offers a vast view of the ocean and beautiful Torrey Pines sandstone cliffs. The pine trees are a great visual focus while on the hike. A swim in the ocean after is recommended. If you still want more exercise after your swim, walking south on the beach to La Jolla can be an interesting walk, as you will need to negotiate a nude beach, Black's Beach, on the way and you are never quite sure what the views have to offer! Quick tip: If you are the one in your hiking group that always wants to know where you can take a bathroom stop, you will find bathrooms at the bottom and top of the hill. San Elijo Lagoon is the body of water between Solana Beach and Cardiff right across from the ocean. It is an easy hike around that area but extends west and north offering a variety of levels of intensity and length. Wild animals and lush vegetation can be found on this hike. Take a walk on the bridge over the wetlands and canals of water, where you can see fish swimming. Beautiful birds and other mammals are part of the environment, and can be seen crossing the narrow paths as you walk. There are benches along the way so you cant sit and enjoy the beautiful view of what looks like a valley of the Pacific Ocean nestled between Solana Beach and Cardiff’s cliffs. Quick tip: A little trip inside the nature preserve house will give you some more information about their extensive preservation work of these wetlands. Carmel Valley is filled with trails so you will be spoilt for choice. The Carmel Valley path extends from the 5 at Carmel Valley Road to Carmel Country Road. Hikers as well as bikers use this trail, and a few horse riding aficionados as well. The paths and roads are beautifully designed alongside residential communities. This path also extends west to Poway. Watch for humming birds and rabbits usually sighted on this trail. There is an immense feeling of distance and height along the Carmel Mountain portions of the trail and a sense of transition over the Canyon. Quick tip: Even though this is usually not a big deal in San Diego, check that it has not rained a day or two before your hike as there are some parts that you won’t be able to cross, or at least come out of with clean shoes, on this trail! magine you’re racing against more than 400 kayakers in the world’s longest nonstop paddling race. You endure 340 miles of water and place 4th overall, while tying for 2nd in the solo category. Impressive? Definitely. Now imagine you did all of this with a crack in your femur bone from a road bike crash two weeks earlier. Such was the experience of Robyn Benincasa this past summer. World Champion adventure racer, 3x Guinness World Record kayaker, motivational speaker, and Ironman triathlete…A prime example of grit, determination, and inspiration, Benincasa is a longtime endurance athlete and firefighter. As an adventure racer for almost 20 years, she learned that the power of strong leadership and teamwork is the key to winning. She fell into motivational speaking, presenting at conferences for various companies on the essential elements of human synergy. “We’re not walking side by side; we’re carrying each other, we’re towing each other,” says Benincasa, of her adventure races. Once she started her own adventure racing team,

she wouldn’t pick the best athletes, but the best teammates. “I was the captain. It wasn’t about the power; it was about creating and producing the team. Then we’d get out there and everyone would act in their area of strength.” Moving to San Diego from Long Island, New York in 1988, she landed her first job in corporate sales, after graduating from Arizona State University. However, she soon decided that firefighting would be a better fit; it was physical, there was something new to accomplish every day, and she was able to train for triathlons. Given her physically demanding background, Benincasa has thrived in largely male-dominated areas and always saw herself as an equal teammate. “From a young age, I never thought to myself, well, maybe I shouldn’t because I’m a girl…it never crossed my mind.” As an endurance athlete, she’s gained life-changing confidence that she hopes to inspire others to obtain. “Believing in

yourself comes from doing; doing crazy, awesome, wonderful things that you almost never imagined you could do, and then you do,” she says. “It makes you a little bit Teflon to those feelings of being less than, because you just know you’re not.” No stranger to physical setbacks, Benincasa has had five hip replacements, after being diagnosed with Stage Four osteoarthritis. “I was

setbacks, as well as their families, realize their strength. “I always loved helping people see what they’re capable of.” In 2008, she founded the nonprofit Project Athena Foundation. Her friend Louise Cooper, a 2x cancer survivor who trained for big adventures as she went through treatment, largely inspired her. Similarly, she traded her running shoes for a paddleboat after her first hip replacement. The Project Athena team, typically comprising 40 survivors, fundraisers (“Gods” and “Goddesses”), and endurance racing coaches (“Trail Angels”), set out on an organized expedition led by Benincasa. From the San Diego “Harbor to Harbor” marathon to the “Rim-2Rim” Grand Canyon trek, the adventures are modeled after the greatest team-oriented races. “It didn’t matter who was strongest, it didn’t matter who got the credit. It mattered that we crossed the finish line together,” she says, of her experience with top adventure racing teams. utumn is the perfect time for some outdoor adventures. One of our favorite destinations is the charming town of Julian, just an hour east of San Diego and in the heart of the Cuyamaca Mountains. Here are our recommendations for a rustic weekend getaway! WHERE TO STAY

Lake Cuyamaca Recreation & Park District is great for family fishing trips and offers a free fishing class every Saturday. Another campground is Lake Henshaw. At the bottom of Palomar Mountains, there is a beautiful lake for fishing along with hiking and a recreation area for bigger groups. For those who like to stay in a more comfortable setting, the Julian Lodge Bed and Breakfast or Orchard Hill Inn, both located in the heart of Julian on Main Street, are great options. Built in 1885, the Julian Lodge Bed and Breakfast was designed after the Washington Hotel and has a vintage feel. The Orchard Hill Inn is craftsman's style and offers luxury dining and amenities. • Presented by Julian Tea and Cottage Arts, Thursday, November 3rd through Monday, November 7th, join residents for the 22nd anniversary of the Julian Cottage Classic Tea served at a charming turn-of-the-century home. Enjoy finger sandwiches, scones with whipped cream and homemade jam and desserts. • The Eagle Mining Co. offers tours of the original mines in Julian. Walk through tunnels and learn about the life of residents during the Gold Rush. Another favorite is the Julian Mining Company where you can pan for gold and minerals. Other historical tours include the Julian Carriage Company and Julian Tours. • On Main Street is where the charm of Julian lies. It is a great location for one-of-a-kind boutiques and antique shops such as Wayne and Tom the Antique Finders. There are specialty food shops like fudge, sweets and pies from Julian Candy Basket. We recommend pie at California Mountain Bakery and Julian Cafe and Bakery to take home treats.

• Drive about 3 miles west of Main Street to the Julian Station. Similar to a public market, Julian Station is housed in an old large warehouse that has shops, food, and tastings. Romano's, family owned and operated, is located in downtown Julian and has served traditional Italian dishes since 1982. Wynola Pizza and Bistro is the best pizza in Julian, with wood-fired entrees, vegetarian dishes and signature salads and desserts. The true gem of Julian is Jeremy’s on the Hill California Bistro. Chef Jeremy Manley’s menu changes according to seasonal and local produce and sustainable proteins - must haves are the Famous Crispy Brussels Sprouts and Star B Ranch Bison Burger. A great place for lunch is at Mr. Manitas Taco Bar & Fruteria at Julian Station on Main Street. WINERIES/ TASTING ROOMS

If you are an oenophile and staying on Main Street, head to Orfila Vineyards and Winery and Blue Door Winery. About 2 miles north of Main Street, take a hike at Volcan Winery and reward yourself with delicious wine. A great way to experience wine tasting in Julian is to take the Julian Backcountry Wine tour for an afternoon of fine crafted wines and gourmet food. SoCal Beach Volleyball With a Mexico Flair ARTICLE HARVEY NEIMAN

f you live in San Diego County or are a frequent visitor familiar with our lifestyle, you know that our beaches and ocean offer some of the most exciting ways to spend time. Along with surfing, fishing, sailing, diving, boogey boarding and awesome daily sunsets, there is wildly popular beach volleyball. On any weekend, in fact, almost any day it’s not raining or storming, the beaches are filled with volleyball players of all skill levels. For many years, the beach pro tour came through our area at least once or twice a summer. Beaches best known for high level 2-person sand volleyball competition are Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, La Jolla Shores, Del Mar, Moonlight, Carlsbad, and Oceanside. But there is even more for players and spectators who savor the fact that Mexico is not far away. Held every year since the early 1970s, less than 45 minutes’ drive south of the Tijuana border, is the Mexico International Volleyball 2-person beach volleyball tournament. It is a true blast for all who attend. The quality of the players ranges from professional to novice. There are both men’s and women’s divisions. Next year’s tournament will be held on Saturday / Sunday, June 24-25, 2017, on the beach in front of its major sponsor, Pappas & Beer bar and club, in Rosarito Beach, Baja California. It is an event that witnesses outstanding competition at the sport’s highest level, coupled with all the misbehavior of “Spring Break” in Florida. It’s just better, because it’s right here in our backyard, done in a way only Southern California (truly Baja) can deliver. What happens in Rosarito, stays in Rosarito. It’s quite a sight to see 40-50 volleyball courts strung out along the sand, with athletes of all abilities, playing nature’s perfect sport. The sand can get extremely hot, so “sand socks” are often needed whether one is playing or just walking over to the hospitality tent. Some players will dress in costumes too. Many folks come to the tournament not as entrants, but to watch friends or relatives play. So, if someone wants something to do in addition to watching the players, there are all the recreational sports one would expect from a beach resort environment. Fishing or picturesque oceanfront golf is available between Rosarito Beach and Ensenada, no more than an additional hour drive to the south. If you like the beauty of vineyards and wineries, there is the rapidly expanding region of the Guadalupe Valley, about an hour and a quarter drive to the south and east. Close by, there are a number of outstanding restaurants within walking distance of the beach or less than a 15-minute cab ride away. The tournament’s motto, slightly different from the famous adage, is “what happens at Mex Volleyball, should be photographed.” It’s a blast!
