Decatur Legacy Park grew out of the needs of the city. Previously a home for children who could not be safe with their families, the 77-acre land retains many historic buildings, including an awe-in-
programs. Compassionate Atlanta centers compassion while driving positive action for equitable health outcomes. Global Growers grow fresh produce for families and local marketplaces

This land has been a sacred space for the most vulnerable since 1873, and its nature-focused amenities are inclusive and open to all abilities. Historical preservation and repurposing are ongoing here, and these efforts go hand in hand with environmental conservation, which includes building biodiversity and teaching community water use. Continual development is needed, and the organization seeks to honor the past and maintain each space as recognizable. Legacy Decatur, the 501(c)(3) foundation that manages the city’s strategic goals through Legacy Park’s endeavors, seeks to come together and solve problems amidst a culture of community engagement. Several nonprofits are housed here, dedicated to meeting the community’s needs and creating a sense of belonging for all. Paint Love provides trauma-informed art
with barriers to agricultural resources. These are only three examples in a long (and growing) list of nonprofit tenants who reside at Decatur Legacy Park. Its programs and amenities focus on increasing community well-being. Madeleine Henner, Decatur Legacy Park’s Executive Director, has honed in on the importance of public spaces and relationship building. It is the projects, programs, and partnerships that make Decatur Legacy Park exceptional. Dymond Generette, the Programs Manager, is energized by what she calls “community in-reach” wherein one actively participates in the communities they serve while striving to keep learning. She aims towards the goal of togetherness and believes we can all learn from each other’s differences. By providing neutral public spaces, which will come to include housing, environmental programs, and recreation, Decatur Legacy Park is on a mission to grow together. It could not

thrive without the dedication of so many City employees, especially Key Wade and Dorsey Nobles, the Public Works staff who care for the facilities. There is so much in the works to look forward to. Decatur Legacy Park’s wedding program is in effect, offering affordable spaces for ceremonies and receptions, including two wedding prep rooms. The historical chapel, built in 1906, is ideal for intimate weddings under 80 people. Its stained glass windows and natural acoustics lend a charming air to this historical space in a natural setting. While no longer a Methodist organization, Decatur Legacy Park is dedicated to maintaining this special space. The Hawkins building works well as an indoor reception venue, while additional spaces will be available soon! The Creative Village is currently in progress. Funded by Congressman Hank Johnson, four cottages will provide affordable studios and housing for artists. In partnership with Decatur Arts Alliance, these dedicated spaces for creation are born of Decatur’s rich history in public art. Decatur Legacy Park is passionate about providing affordable housing and community development as the entire entity strives to be a role model for accessibility. In addition, the land will return to its former roots by making this space a home again.

Decatur Legacy Park is a nonprofit that will be operationally, programmatically, and financially self-sufficient from the city come July 2025. They will be relying more on community members to enact the master plan optimally. There are many ways to join this community and aid in its mission. Volunteering, renting space for your events, donating, and simply visiting are all impactful ways to ensure Legacy Decatur grows more efficiently and continues to serve as many people as possible. Olive Branch Wellness began with a batch of homemade soap. Ty Jenkins was tirelessly searching for a formula that wouldn’t activate her husband’s eczema after he continually experienced outbreaks from store-bought soaps. She mixed formula after formula until she reached the ideal recipe, and a lightbulb went off. Dedicated to sharing her sustainability and non-toxic beauty expertise, Jenkins searched for the perfect place to house her discoveries. She likes to say, “Decatur chose me,” and the acquisition of her storefront happened serendipitously. Her store brings something special to downtown Decatur, especially the refill stations and reuse jars (glass, of course!) which minimize environmental impact.
The DIY beauty stations offer plantbased ingredients that keep clientele coming back for more. Three customer-favorite products in particular always get rave reviews! First are the famous soaps that come in a customized box with four handpicked varieties. Next up, the shower steamers. These glass jars hold a mixture of eucalyptus and spearmint essential oils and serve to decongest and awaken. Finally, the lotion lantern is a super cool innovation. It’s a massive candle with one pound of product that you can use as body butter or warm oil. One of their most exciting offerings is the Mud Masks and Mimosas networking event for Decatur residents that fosters

You can play it up or down as much as you want.” And if a brunch date is more your speed, the restaurant recently started offering brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, featuring a prix-fixe menu priced at $35 per person. The menu includes everything from French classics like a Croque Madame to Eggs Benedict and of course, the beloved Spaghetti and Meatballs.

Decatur’s only independently and family-owned steakhouse, Parker’s on Ponce, is located just across from the square and is a staple for many families and couples. Known for its steaks and surf & turf dishes, Parker’s also has a beautiful ambiance, which features two different brick fireplaces that create quite a romantic glow. For Valentine’s Day, Parker’s owner J-T Scott recommends diners make reservations 2-4 weeks in advance, but the team will work to accommodate everyone they can from two-tops to families. Parker’s doesn’t offer any prix-fixe meals for the occasion, so everyone can get the classic staples they always expect, with the addition of specials. With a beautiful bar, the restaurant celebrates local products in both its food and in the bar program, which includes a very special cocktail named “The Decatur,” which is made with Decatur’s Independent Distilling’s Hellbender Bourbon. Other cocktails such as the Strawberry Daisy are made with Farmer’s Jam, a locally made bar mixer. Right at the beginning of the year, Parker’s transitioned to its Winter menu, which incorporates seasonal ingredients such as blood oranges, grapefruit, and celery root into the dishes, as well as the re-addition of mussels to the menu. If you want your classic staples, or something fresh, Parker’s is the spot.

Located directly in the square, this Spanish tapas spot is the perfect pick for an engaging evening with a lot of conversation. The best way to experience this vast menu is by selecting multiple different dishes and sharing them. Not only does this interactive experience open the door to so many conversations, often times there are menu items that diners are trying for the first time. Executive Chef Josue Pena recommends some of the most popular and fan favorites like Pork Cheek Tacos, Bacon Wrapped Dates, Ibérico Croquetas, Patatas bravas, Paella (serves 2, so it’s a perfect date night dish), and Churros to any first-time diners. In addition to the core staples, this winter The Iberian Pig is adding new plates to the menu, including
a paella, featuring Argentinian red shrimp and chorizo ibérico, and some new cheeses and gelatos that Chef Pena is excited to add to the menu, including an update to their wonderful Queso ibérico - a great blend of cow’s milk and sheep’s milk from La Mancha Spain, and a boozy Amontillado Sherry flavored gelato, in collaboration with local gelateria Voga. The Iberian Pig offers a true exploratory experience, and in addition to the regular dinner options, they host a Jamón Happy Hour Monday through Thursday from 5-6 p.m. & Friday from 4-6 p.m. with menu offerings that include a $24 chefs selection (includes 2 quesos & 2 charcuteria), $5 red wine, white wine & sangria, $6 add-ons such as marinated Spanish olives or marcona almonds, $8 peppadew peppers.

What does Paint Love bring to the Decatur community? We provide art programs for kids while prioritizing children who face poverty and trauma - which after the pandemic, was pretty much everyone.
How did Paint Love start? In 2024, we will be open for 10 years! Paint Love was started by Julie Mckevitt who is a local artist that realized the power of art for mental health and critical thinking. She spent her time volunteering at Title 1 schools and nonprofits that did not have art programs. While doing so, she quickly realized that these children often do not have access to creative outlets, or home environments that support their mental health - so she created a 501(c)(3) whose mission is just that.
How many children have you served? We have served 10,000 kids in 2023 alone!
Do you mind sharing more about the mental connection to art? Oh, man! Physically creating art has so many benefits as it contributes to mental health. Art aids our brain-body connection. Typically in poverty, our bodies are stuck in fight or flight mode and this prolonged stress causes us to have mental fatigue. Art allows your body to return to its normal resting state by providing tactical feedback (ie: touch). Even doodling is good for your brain because it allows you to unlock access to cognitive critical thinking.
Does Paint Love have any big plans for 2024? Besides celebrating 10 years of operations, we want to focus on growing the Dekalb, Fulton, and Cobb County school’s presence. We work with school improvement plans to enhance what they are currently doing by utilizing creativity.
