LIFESTYLE LETTER
The importance of Exploring We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. I admit - I fall into the trap too. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can make an exact calculation of the time, effort and investment it will cost me. The things that result in the highest level of control and least amount of uncertainty. Over my career I have taken numerous personality tests, and my number one trait has always been I am analytical. In fact I never even took vacations. That said, one year I had to take a business trip to Nova Scotia. The only way to cost justify the trip was to spend the weekend there … by myself. So I went, and had nothing to do for 2 days. So I decided to go exploring. The result was, I saw some amazing sights, and learned more about the history of France’s efforts to colonize North America that weekend than in all my schooling combined. And I had a blast! What I learned was that we must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book or even making a new friend. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar. As always, I hope that you choose to read and learn about some of our local businesses and support them. If you or a friend want a copy of the magazine, you can pick one up at the Daytona Chamber, Ormond Chamber, or MOAS.

THE BROWN FAMILY’S LEGACY OF EXPLORATION AND GIVING
CURIOSITY AND CULTURE: 12
H OM E TOWN H E R O | ARTS + CU LT U RE
From the terrace of Brown & Brown’s sleek headquarters, Cici Brown gazes over Daytona Beach, reflecting on a life defined by exploration—intellectual, artistic, and global. Her lifelong commitment to curiosity, especially
“And they shared them with everyone.” Renowned collections, including works by Renoir, were freely available in campus museums. That early exposure to great works planted a seed that grew into a lifelong devotion to the arts.
“THE GREATEST GIFT TO CHILDREN IS SHOWING THEM THE WORLD’S BEAUTY.” in art, culture, and education, has not only shaped her own path but become a guiding force in her family’s values. For Cici, exploration goes far beyond travel. It’s about fostering wonder, encouraging the next generation to imagine boldly, and leaving a legacy rooted in cultural appreciation. Raised in the culturally rich Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, she was surrounded by intellectual vibrancy. “I was lucky to have access to world-class academic institutions like Smith College, Mount Holyoke, and Amherst,” she recalls. “The Northeast is filled with schools on every street corner, and the arts are everywhere.” Among her most vivid memories are the concerts at Smith College, always open to the community. “They have incredible music programs,” she says. “I remember going to performances that felt so special, even as a young girl.” Equally influential was the access to world-class art throughout the region. “The nearby colleges all had extraordinary art collections,” Cici recalls.
That devotion, it turns out, runs deeper than many know. Cici’s mother was an artist who once brought beauty to life with watercolors. “She stopped making art as life moved forward,” Cici shares softly, “but I have one of her pieces, and it’s incredibly special to me.” Now lovingly displayed in her home, that painting is a quiet but powerful reminder of where her own creative spirit first took root. In its soft strokes and subtle colors, Cici sees not just her mother’s hands, but a generational thread of imagination and love. Hyatt Brown moved to Daytona Beach with his parents and older brother in 1939, when he was just two years old. He and Cici married in 1965, and two years later, they welcomed their first child in the same city. From the beginning, the couple was determined to raise their growing family—eventually three sons—with a strong sense of curiosity and discovery. “When Hyatt and I got married, we decided that travel was going to be a huge part of our children’s lives,” Cici shares. “It’s an essential part of education.” CONTINUED >

True to their word, the Brown boys explored the world—from the galleries of Europe to African art collections—developing a deep appreciation for history, culture, and creativity. “All our boys have traveled extensively, and now they do the same with their own families,” she says proudly. “That’s the greatest gift you can give your children—exposure to the world and all its beauty.” That spirit of giving has extended far beyond the Brown household. Through their philanthropy, the Browns have become cultural stewards for the Daytona Beach community. One of their most cherished family ventures was collecting African antiquities. “African art is something you can hold,” Cici says. “You can feel the weight of history in your hands.” Their dedication to preserving and sharing the arts is perhaps most powerfully illustrated by a historic gift to the Museum of Arts and Sciences—one of the most substantial cultural donations in Florida’s history. This extraordinary contribution ensures that future

“LEGACY IS THE LASTING IMPACT OF WONDER” generations will have access to the same kind of transformative experiences that shaped their own lives. Additional support for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Stetson University, and the Ormond Art Museum further underscores the Browns’ enduring commitment to education and the arts. As Cici reflects on the family’s journey, she emphasizes that legacy isn’t about buildings or titles—it’s about the impact of wonder. “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink,” she muses with a smile. “But if you give children the tools to explore the world, to travel, to experience art, you give them the ability to find their own passions.” For Cici Brown and her family, exploration isn’t just a chapter—it’s the throughline of a life lived with open eyes and an open heart. From the wooded hills of her childhood to the sunlit shores of Daytona, and from the stillness of a mother’s painting to the echo of African drums, hers is a legacy that whispers: keep wondering, keep wandering, keep giving.

The Perfect Steak ARTICLE BY CASEY WEBER, TALL GRASS MEAT COMPANY Nothing describes summer better than a good cookout! And what is a cookout without a good, quality steak and the perfect grilling recipe? 1. Thaw and acclimate the steak. For searing to occur, the proteins in steak need to be heated to at least 310°F. Tossing cold meat onto a hot grill lowers the temperature and can prevent a crust from forming, so it’s important that any frozen steaks are thawed completely before cooking. 2. Salt your steak 30-45 minutes before grilling. This causes the salt to draw moisture from within the steak up to the surface, where it dissolves the salt and creates a brine that gets reabsorbed into the steak where it breaks down tough connective tissues. 3. Oil the grate on the grill, not the steak. Use tongs and a paper towel dipped in vegetable oil to lube your grates. 4. Manage your heat well. Remember that your grill needs to be hot for your steak to get a good sear. But if it’s hot enough to cause your oil to smoke, it’s too hot.
16
C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE
5. Use the 60/40 rule. The best-tasting steaks are seared on both sides and cooked evenly in the middle. The simplest way to do that is to only flip your steak once. The 60/40 rule suggests that 60% of your cook time should be spent on one side, and 40% on the other. 6. Keep the lid closed. It may be tempting to peek, but trust the experts and keep it shut! Opening the lid makes your grill lose heat, which makes steaks cook unevenly. 7. Check for doneness. A meat thermometer will give you the most accurate temperature reading: • Rare: 120°F • Medium Rare: 130°F • Medium: 140°F • Medium Well: 150°F • Well: 160°F 8. Let your steak rest. Pull your steaks from the grill once they’re cooked to 5-10 degrees below your target temperature and rest for 10-15 minutes.

CHRISTOPHE HANCKOWIAK’S HONEST EYE BEHIND THE LENS
In a world overflowing with filters and flawless poses, photographer Christophe Hanckowiak is doing something refreshingly different—he’s keeping it real. His work captures more than what’s in front of the camera. It tells unguarded, human stories. “I believe people want to go back to authenticity,” Christophe says. “Especially now, when AI is blooming and it’s hard to tell what’s real.” That desire for truth drives every frame he shoots. Christophe doesn’t rely on stiff poses or studio lighting. Instead, he builds genuine connection. At a recent high school senior session, he met a student who didn’t want to smile. Through conversation and empathy, he slowly opened up. “By creating that connection,” Christophe says, “I could make him more relaxed—and eventually, he cracked a smile, which made his grandmother so happy.” CONTINUED > JULY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/ DAY TO N A F L
19
That philosophy extends beyond individual sessions. His “Art Under Every Cup” project, created in partnership with local businesses and communities such as the Daytona Beach Police Department, uses photography to foster community connection. “Everyone has a story,” he says. “It’s my job to capture the emotion behind it.” He’s also thoughtful—and outspoken— about the rise of AI-generated imagery and how it’s reshaping how people present themselves - both personally and professionally. “You almost don’t need a photographer to create something perfect—you can ask AI for a flawless image,” Christophe says. “But when you go to share that image, people wonder: Who am I going to talk to? A real person—or someone trying to be fake?” It’s this distinction—between the curated and the real—that defines his work. Christophe isn’t chasing perfection. He’s chasing truth. “Photography, for me, is not about likes or approval,” he says. “It’s about telling a story honestly.” Daytona is more than a backdrop for his work—it’s a source of inspiration. Christophe sees beauty and possibility where others might not. “Daytona has a lot more to give than what it currently is,” he says. His images of local faces and places work to shift perceptions of our hometown. “I feel more fulfilled, working toward a vision that goes beyond just taking pictures,” he shares. Through his lens, Christophe invites us to see not just images—but ourselves, without filters.

INSPIRATION and INTENTION Johnson's team is one of his best assets.
By 10 a.m. on any given weekday, Rufus Johnson—owner of the local GEICO office—has already hit the gym, led a team power session, and logged hours of focused work... and he doesn’t slow down. Rufus works every weekday until closing time at 6 p.m., leading by example in the office he’s built and sustained for over two decades. Walk into his office and you’ll find him there, present, polished, and known by name. A Navy veteran, Southern Miss graduate, former healthcare manager, and avid golfer, Rufus brings a lifetime of discipline and heart into every client interaction. Before becoming one of Daytona’s most trusted names in insurance, Rufus grew up in Prentiss, Mississippi, grounded in values like teamwork, humility, and accountability. Those principles still define his leadership today. Every morning, his team gathers for a power session—aligning goals, reinforcing discipline, and building momentum that clients can feel. “We run contests, we train hard, and we keep it fun. When you walk into work, you shouldn’t dread it,” says Johnson.
Geico provides a strong platform for Rufus Johnson's local business to shine.

Johnson’s agency offers personal lines of insurance with both precision and empathy: auto, homeowners, motorcycle, condo, renters, RV, ATV, flood, jewelry, identity theft, and umbrella coverage for multiple policies. Each client receives a printed booklet to keep in their glove compartment and is personally guided through downloading the GEICO app before they leave, ensuring they’re ready, even if they’re stuck on the side of the road. “People want to understand what they’re buying. We make sure they do.” As one of only about 30 GEICO-exclusive agencies in Florida, the Johnson Agency offers national strength with local trust. And while the business thrives, it’s Rufus’s consistency that leaves the deepest impression, always leading from the front, always putting people first. Rufus Johnson believes in giving back to his community and paying it forward by helping other business owners. “I didn’t get where I am by myself. That’s why I give back; to honor those who helped me.” Rufus chairs the Daytona State College Foundation Board, leads the African American Leadership Council of Volusia, serves on the executive board of the Daytona Regional Chamber, supports the Checkered Flag Committee at Daytona International Speedway, and sits on the Chamber’s Golf Committee. He lives where he works, lends his time and leadership to local causes, and remains a fixture at community events and golf tournaments alike. His clients span generations—not just because of what he offers, but because of who he is. This isn’t just about policies. It’s about presence. Rufus Johnson doesn’t just sell insurance. He shows up. He leads. And for Daytona Beach, that intention makes all the difference.

As headlines swirl around the $150 million gift that promises to transform the Museum of Arts & Sciences (MOAS) into a crown jewel of Florida’s cultural landscape, CEO Tabitha Schmidt is quietly orchestrating something even more profound. Beyond the new building, reimagined galleries, and expanded endowment lies a story of curatorial philosophy, community relevance, and bold leadership.

“We’re moving from ‘more is better’ to more intentional,” Schmidt explains. Currently, MOAS displays an estimated 40% of its collection—far more than the 5–7% typical of most museums. But that’s changing. Schmidt and Chief Curator Tamara Joy are shifting focus to rotating displays and curated storytelling, prioritizing preservation, engagement, and emotional connection. “We don’t want static experiences. We want seasonal exhibitions that make people come back.” That shift also includes rethinking how the museum defines its mission. “We need to stop talking about things and start talking about ideas,” says Schmidt, emphasizing that exhibits should evoke curiosity, spark conversation, and create meaningful connections. This narrative-driven approach is deeply embedded in the museum’s new 25-year strategic plan, which Schmidt has been instrumental in shaping since joining MOAS in 2022. CONTINUED >

Interestingly, the Browns’ transformative gift was not part of the initial hiring conversation. “This kind of opportunity is a director’s dream,” Schmidt reflects. “I’m a builder, a fixer, a creator. I don’t do status quo.” Her appointment, she believes, is one of alignment—“the right CEO at the right time.” That timing is critical. The forthcoming design, still conceptual, calls for a bold architectural presence along Nova Road, while fostering connection to the existing Brown Museum. But beyond architecture, the strategy centers on guest experience. “Museums can’t be buildings with stuff in them,” Schmidt says. “They have to be for the people.”
Plans include a unified visitor hub, expanded outdoor programming, and a strong campus-wide identity. “We want people to understand that the entire 60-acre property is the museum,” Schmidt says, referencing walkable green spaces, festival zones, and gathering areas. As the first architectural renderings take shape and strategic plans unfold, one thing is certain: MOAS is not only growing—it’s evolving. And under Tabitha Schmidt’s leadership, it’s doing so with vision, grit, and heart.

The Transformative Power of Exploration Lindblad Expeditions Cruises Ready to leave the usual tourist crowds behind? Lindblad Expeditions Cruises makes seeing the world from a new angle easy and genuinely exciting. Instead of sticking to the standard stops, Lindblad’s voyages are all about discovery, curiosity, and a little bit of adventure. With over 100 itineraries across more than 70 countries, Lindblad’s reach is global, but their sweet spots are places like the Galápagos and Antarctica - destinations that feel like nature’s own secret playgrounds. These aren’t just trips; they’re immersive experiences led by naturalists, scientists, and local experts who know how to turn a walk on a volcanic island or a Zodiac ride past an iceberg into a story you’ll want to tell for years. What makes Lindblad different? For starters, their ships are purpose-built for exploration. Forget about waiting in long lines or being herded from port to port. With small groups and nimble vessels, you’ll spend more time kayaking, snorkeling, hiking, and getting hands-on with the wild side of the world. Every day brings new ways to explore, whether you’re snapping photos with a National Geographic instructor or listening to a marine biologist explain the secret life of sea lions.

Lindblad’s roots go deep: the company’s founder, Lars-Eric Lindblad, was one of the first to bring travelers to places like Antarctica and the Galápagos. That pioneering spirit is alive and well, with a crew that’s passionate about sharing their knowledge and helping guests see the world with fresh eyes. They’re also serious about protecting the places they visit, balancing adventure with a strong commitment to conservation and responsible travel. And here’s a bonus: Lindblad Expeditions is a member of the Virtuoso network and the Endless Luxury program at Montecito Village Travel, my host agency. That means when you book through me, you may receive some extra perks and amenities to make your adventure even more memorable.

they are approachable and friendly. Their customer service is beyond reproach, with the owner, Sara texting daily to review the progress of your treatment. Both Sara and Mayce are well trained, and highly regarded in the area of Neo Gen Plasma treatment, the treatment I received just two weeks ago. The procedure is cutting edge, and I have already noticed improvement in my hyperpigmentation. I'm looking forward to continued progress!! The entire team at Daytona Med Spa is absolutely wonderful. I recommend the Spa, without reservation. This place is cutting edge!
