LIFESTYLE LETTER

Health & Wellness Health and wellness is a bigger deal in the Daytona Beach region than most parts of the country simply because we are a retirement destination, and as we get older we become more attentive to health and wellness. Palmer College of Chiropractic is based here. We have great hospitals and urgent care facilities along with numerous specialty practices. You have choices whether you want cutting-edge technology or to take a holistic or naturopathic approach to your health. This issue was crafted to offer something different: inspiration for long-term, sustainable improvements in physical, emotional, and mental health. There is a saying that you don’t know what you don’t know, and that is especially true today when it comes to healthcare. I learned recently that the only AdventHealth location that does more robotic procedures than Daytona Beach is their Phoenix location. That fact blew me away. So I invite you to sit back, relax, and learn a little about some of the amazing choices you have in maintaining your health without having to leave the Daytona Beach area. Take care of your mind, body, and spirit … because you only get one life. Here’s to a healthy, happy new year—we’re rooting for you!

Relax & Renew

Sometimes the best solution is right in front of us. It’s no surprise that we find ourselves living in what many call the age of anxiety. The phrase was first introduced by poet W. H. Auden to describe the general uneasiness following World War I and it feels even more relevant today. Long before smartphones, social media, and artificial intelligence reshaped daily life, people sensed the world was changing faster than they could adapt. Nearly 80 years later, we find ourselves depending on technology to perform faster and faster just to keep pace with all the changes. Shorter attention spans, nonstop news cycles, and fluctuating social demands all contribute to our chronic stress—often before we even notice it building. The good news? The Daytona Beach area offers countless ways to relax, reset, restore calm, and stay grounded. Here are some reminders to turn to when you are looking for new ideas or want to focus on a new year’s resolution to stay calm and carry on.

• Look out the nearest window and watch a palm tree gently sway. • Sit outside and listen for the songbirds and even the gentle hum of a distant lawnmower. • Keep a beach chair and sandals in your car—just in case inspiration strikes. • Start the morning with a mountain pose or a yoga salutation to the sun. • Find a cozy and quiet spot on the beach and listen to the waves roll in. • Sip your coffee before plugging in and logging on to give yourself time and space to wander and to consider your own perspective before getting pulled in other directions. • Make a short, doable priority list of only your must-dos for the day. • Balance the tasks you dread with activities you truly enjoy. • Find ways to reduce repetitive annoyances in your life - resolve to replace the refrigerator with the noisy ice-maker.

“The Day tona Beach area of fers countless ways to relax, reset, restore calm, and stay grounded.”

• Revisit the music you loved as a teen and build a fresh playlist. • Subscribe to an uplifting author’s blog. • Follow a comedian or comic content provider - something that makes you smile. • Use sticky notes to remind you of what’s important in your life. • Schedule unscheduled time to let your imagination and thoughts roam where they will. • Print out your favorite photos and make a collage or even use an inexpensive online service to create a large-format art print.

• Try box breathing: inhale for four, hold for four, exhale for four, hold for four. Repeat. • Prioritize finding and building a list of “your people”—the listeners, helpers, and healers who keep you grounded. Challenges are inevitable, but rising to meet them often comes down to having maintained a practice of self-care. Staying physically and mentally flexible, maintaining life balance, and honoring yourself will help make you ready for whatever comes your way in the new year. JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . PROVIDING CRITICAL CARE CLOSE TO HOME.

Artist's rendering of AdventHealth Daytona Beach campus expansion

ARTICLE BY DEB LOVETT PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTOPHE HANCKOWIAK

Something you learn quickly in the company of Dr. David Sinclair is that he is always in motion and leads by example. The new President and CEO of AdventHealth Daytona Beach is a man of science and medicine who believes in the power of the spirit. He is a servant leader who makes his rounds these days through all the halls of the hospital gathering real-time feedback. He is overseeing the final stages of the hospital’s expansion to a 1,000,000 sq. ft. facility this year – the equivalent of 15+ football fields. Dr. Sinclair is an approachable and thoughtful executive who radiates a passion and dedication to health care – a calling first sparked by his mother, a medical secretary who introduced him to the world of medicine. The dedication to community and teamwork that he brings to the table originates in the leadership opportunities he found growing up within a strong faith-based community. “It’s important to me that our mission is expressed not only through the care our teams provide to patients but also through our attention to the environment,” said Dr. Sinclair. “We are absolutely here to fix the physical ailments that our community clearly needs, but beyond that we know that people are hurting. What we hear, see, and feel when we are at the hospital helps heal us.” Part of that experience is providing advanced critical care close to home, so area residents don’t need to travel far for treatments. “With our expansion, we will be providing more local access to top physicians, more innovation, and more resources with the promise to provide whole-person care: healing the body, mind, and spirit,” Dr. Sinclair said.

RECOGNITION AND RESULTS

In addition to more than 25 years of clinical experience, Dr. Sinclair brings five years of Chief Medical Officer service to his leadership role, including two years in Daytona Beach. Under Dr. Sinclair’s leadership, the hospital has earned multiple awards including: • #1 hospital in the Deltona–Daytona Beach metro area (U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals 2025) • High performing hospital in 14 adult procedures and conditions (U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals 2025) CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . The hospital’s reputation and supportive culture have attracted nearly 200 highly trained physicians and advanced practice providers in a wide range of specialties through the AdventHealth Medical Group at Daytona Beach.

NEUROLOGY

AdventHealth Daytona Beach is home to an award-winning team recognized as a Comprehensive Stroke Center – the highest recognition for treating serious stroke events – and the only one of its kind in northeast Florida. The hospital uses the cutting-edge O-arm® Imaging System, a tool that allows the care team to take 3D images of the body during surgery for better precision, smaller incisions, and faster recovery. It is also one of the few facilities in the region performing thrombectomies – a lifesaving stroke procedure performed up to 24 hours after symptoms begin.

“When it comes to stroke, every minute matters,” said Dr. Erinc Akture, an interventional neurosurgeon at the hospital. “We are using advanced technology to give patients a second chance at life.”

CARDIOLOGY

The award-winning cardiology department uses the ground-breaking da Vinci robotic system to offer minimally invasive surgery with improved precision and faster recovery. Like the O-arm®, the camera and robotic arms give surgeons a magnified, 3D-view inside the body and provide a greater range of motion than the human hand alone. Dr. Patrick Mangonon, a leading cardiothoracic surgeon at the hospital, has performed more than 700 robotic-assisted heart and lung surgeries and was the first in Florida to use the da Vinci to treat long-standing atrial fibrillation. “With every procedure, we’re improving outcomes and giving patients the best chance for recovery,” per Mangonon.

COLORECTAL CARE

Colorectal cancer remains the third most common cancer in the U.S. Early detection is crucial since symptoms often don’t appear until later stages. AdventHealth Daytona Beach uses advanced screenings and treatment options to improve patient outcomes including: • The Intuitive Ion Endoluminal System for precise early cancer detection • Direct access colonoscopies and at-home screening kits • Traditional and robotic surgery Dr. Timothy Tolland, a colorectal surgeon at the hospital, emphasizes the importance of routine screenings. “Colonoscopies can

Daytona Beach now has access close to home for complex facial reconstruction, cancer treatment, and delicate voice, throat, and salivary gland procedures. “Head and neck conditions can impact everything from speaking and swallowing to appearance and overall health,” Corsten said. “The right surgical care can make a life-changing difference, and I’m honored to bring my expertise to this community.”

WOMEN’S & CHILDREN’S SERVICES

The Women’s & Children’s Services team is led by Fortunata A. Hansen, MSN, RN, CPPS, who brings her lifelong passion for nursing to her role treating women in all stages of life. The goal of the award-winning team is to be a destination for comprehensive women’s and children’s services. Keeping up with technology is a challenge for all industries, but efforts are already underway to roll out “smart rooms” outfitted with advanced technology. The human touch is critical, though, and Ms. Hansen also plans to introduce Care Navigators to the care team. Pre-birth, birth, post-birth, and the hormonal stages of life are complex experiences that can be easier to negotiate with someone by your side.

“Nursing is both a science and an art,” said Ms. Hansen. “It demands empathy, courage, and clinical excellence. At its core, we serve as advocates for those who cannot always speak for themselves.”

POWERED BY PURPOSE & PHILANTHROPY

Success for the non-profit hospital thrives on community support and philanthropy through AdventHealth Daytona Beach’s Foundation. Community members can make tax-deductible donations raising funds for programs and services. Foundation staff work directly with donors to ensure the intent of the giver is honored whether it be through event support, naming rights, or planned gifts. The community’s health is dependent on this funding so that all people in the hospital’s care can benefit from new technologies, advanced facilities, and compassionate programs – from life-saving treatments and community wellness initiatives to groundbreaking women’s health services.

All staff wear a heart badge reminder to care for patients and families like they would care for their own. “Together, we can make this vision a reality for everyone in our community,” said Nika Hosseini - Board Chair of the Foundation. “But we’re especially proud to be expanding services for our mothers, daughters, sisters, and grandmothers in the re-imagined Women’s & Children’s Services department. With community support, we are expanding our ability to care for women at every stage of life—right here at home.” To make a donation to support the expansion of Women’s & Children’s Services, please visit https://bit.ly/3XxT14L

Tomoka Family Dentistry dental tech

With Comfort and Confidence

ACHIEVING GREAT SMILES ARTICLE BY DEB LOVETT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTOPHE HANCKOWIAK AND TOMOKA FAMILY DENTISTRY Living in the Daytona Beach area isn’t a bad choice for a native Floridian and Dr. Schimenti, owner of Tomoka Family Dentistry, is proud to be a GATOR. Chomp Chomp. “I got both my undergrad and dental degrees from the University of Florida. My keen interest in dentistry started way back as a child growing up with very crooked teeth and feeling very self-conscious of my smile,” says Dr. Schimenti. “I got a huge boost in how I felt about myself after getting orthodontic work done and ending up with a beautiful smile.” Ever since, Dr. Schimenti has been intent on making that difference happen for others. Her days of building tiny models for fun gave her great practice for developing those hand skills so necessary for dentistry. She now brings years of clinical expertise and a compassion for patients to a practice offering a full range of services in a modern, comfortable setting. Building trust, developing personalized treatments, and working with patients to focus on long-term oral health are the kinds of experiences patients can expect.

20

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HEALT H + WE LLN E SS

The family-oriented practice comes with Luna, the “service dog,” to help put nervous patients at ease. Regulars stop by the office just to say hello to Luna. “I have patients who bring her treats and have even knit her sweaters.” Dr. Schimenti has also started offering therapeutic botulinum toxin treatments to help patients who experience clenching, grinding, and TMJ discomfort due to muscle-related tension. An added benefit of Botox is to be able to offer it for facial aesthetics as well. The office also uses dermal fillers to help as the skin ages. The loss of collagen as well as hyaluronic acid results in a reduction in structure and volume to the face as we age. That’s where dermal fillers can help. Dr. Schimenti uses injectable gels from naturally occurring hyaluronic acid. As a dental practice, the team is highly trained in the entire anatomy of the head and neck as well as the oral cavity. “My team prioritizes comfort, education, and prevention. We treat every patient as a family member who deserves gentle and

compassionate treatment while benefiting from the latest technology. We are also committed to transparent two-way communication,” said Dr. Schimenti. “I focus on comprehensive care with the hope of building trust and relationships that last a lifetime. Other new offerings include upgraded x-ray technology for the office’s Itero system, allowing the team to capture smaller, faster, and more accurate scans. The Lumina wands are used to scan

everything, including crown and bridge work, dentures, partials, diagnostic records, bite guards, implant restorations, and even for Invisalign. Tomoka Family Dentistry is proud to now offer patients the use of the Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed, an innovative blue LED light technology that provides a safe way to whiten your smile up to eight shades. “When done right, it’s a natural enhancement and we’re just restoring what is lost when we age”.

New Year, New Sk in Mid Florida Dermatology helps clients glow.

Dr. Jillian Morrison

The start of a new year often inspires a desire to feel renewed, and more people are discovering how cosmetic medicine can support that process in subtle, meaningful ways. Dr. Jillian Morrison believes that confidence begins with understanding, guiding patients through refined, science-based treatments that keep results beautifully natural. As a board-certified plastic surgeon with Mid Florida Dermatology and Plastic Surgery, Dr. Morrison focuses on helping patients discover gentle, effective treatments long before surgery is ever considered. Florida’s sun exposure means most people develop uneven texture, sunspots, and early signs of aging, which is why she often begins with lasers. These treatments improve skin health, soften damage, and even address precancerous areas while delivering noticeable aesthetic benefits that patients can both see and feel. “Lasers are a big thing that I think most people could benefit from, especially living in Florida with sun damage,” Dr. Morrison says, noting their ability to smooth texture

and strengthen skin health. Injectables work in a different way. They restore gentle volume where time has softened the face. “When done right, it’s a very natural enhancement and we’re just restoring what is lost when we age.” This year, Dr. Morrison is especially excited about AuraLlux, a new resurfacing laser ideal for the arms, chest, and neck with minimal downtime. For deeper facial rejuvenation, the UltraClear laser offers transformative results with a short recovery period. Together, these technologies give patients flexible options that fit comfortably into everyday schedules. Consultations begin with each patient’s specific concerns rather than a predetermined plan. Dr. Morrison and her long-tenured team, including her nurse practitioner and physician assistant, guide patients through every step while offering support, education, and consistent, attentive care. For education, before-and-after photos, and updates on events or seasonal promotions, visit Dr. Morrison on Instagram at @plasticsbydr.jmorrison.

How Health & Wellness Travel Is Redefining Luxury

The Journey Inward It begins the moment you exhale—somewhere between the steady hum of a jet engine and the whisper of anticipation that comes with heading somewhere designed to make you whole again. For many travelers, the journey itself has become an essential part of the healing process. Health and wellness travel isn't just a trend anymore—it’s a global movement redefining how we think about self-care, longevity, and luxury.

ARTICLE BY MARNIE VAN DER BURGT

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TRAV E L

Wellness as the New Luxury According to the Global Wellness Institute, wellness travel is projected to reach $1.4 trillion annually by 2027, expanding nearly twice as fast as the overall tourism sector. Insights from the Virtuoso® 2025 Luxe Report reveal more than 60% of luxury travelers now design itineraries centered specifically around wellbeing—whether that means digital detox retreats, longevity clinics, or nature-immersed escapes designed to soothe and restore body and mind. Heath and wellness travel. It’s not just about escaping—it’s about returning home better than before.

Destinations That Redefine Rejuvenation Few have championed the wellness renaissance quite like Canyon Ranch. The brand’s forthcoming Canyon Ranch Austin, nestled in Texas Hill Country, is set to make waves with its exclusive focus on women’s stages of life—guiding women through transitions in health, hormones, and holistic vitality. This nuanced approach represents the evolution of luxury wellness: programs built for every rhythm, season, and phase of one’s journey.

Across the globe, Virtuoso partners continue to elevate the art of wellbeing with a wide range of options. • SHA Wellness Clinic (Spain) — merges cutting-edge longevity science with Mediterranean serenity. • Kamalaya Koh Samui (Thailand) — an award-winning jungle retreat blending Eastern spiritual traditions and modern therapy. • Lefay Resort & SPA Dolomiti (Italy) — where Alpine air and hydrothermal circuits create a sanctuary of balance and stillness. • BodyHoliday (St. Lucia) — a Caribbean classic where wellness meets play—yoga at sunrise, diving by afternoon, balance by design.

CHEERS cherries TO CELEBRATE HEALTH, WELLNESS & DRY JANUARY WITH THIS SUPERFOOD MOCKTAIL It’s been said that “life is just a bowl of cherries,” and it just so happens that cherries might improve your life. This nutrient-dense, heart-healthy fruit may lower blood pressure and cholesterol, combat inflammation, help the body manage stress, speed recovery after exercise, balance your mood and help you sleep. To say it is a superfood may be an understatement. So it’s only fitting that we include a mocktail recipe with cherries as the star ingredient this month. Let’s drink to health, wellness and a wonderful year ahead! Cheers!

Values

Health

Is the most important key to living a full and healthy life hiding from you? There are many factors to consider when thinking about what constitutes health. The food we eat, exercise, environmental influences, our emotions, and our spiritual awareness are all pillars of health. However, there is one factor that tops the list which often goes unspoken; living in alignment with your value system. Defining values helps a person to structure their life based on personal belief systems by determining what is most meaningful and important to them. From there, a sense of purpose is derived and defined values become tenets from which to live. There are plentiful examples of values, and they vary from person to person. Some examples of values include family, humility, benevolence, leadership, kindness, independence, creativity, and adventure. Our emotions serve to guide us to understanding whether our actions are in alignment with our values. When we live incongruently with our value system, we are betraying ourselves and delivering a subconscious message that we do not matter. Emotions that can come from not living in accordance with our values are based in fear and include anxiety, depression, anger, resentment, and jealousy. Living from a place of fear tends

to foster bad habits such as addictive behavior, poor dietary choices, negative sleep habits, and unhealthy relationships. Physiologically, the natural flow of energy in the body becomes stuck, wreaking havoc in the body physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. From there, symptoms and illness ensue. However, when we love and respect ourselves enough, we will spend our time and energy according to our values and emotions where love becomes more prevalent. Those emotions include gratitude, joy, peace, comfort, connection, trust, and happiness. Living from love leads to a desire, willingness and commitment to engage in activities that fulfill our sense of purpose. By doing so, our body’s energy moves with ease. When our energy flows freely, we feel vital, healthy, purposeful, and joyful. Identifying our values becomes easier when we create space in our lives to understand what brings us meaning in life. Here are five steps to create space to aid in identifying your values:

5. Speak your values out loud

1. Grounding/Earthing I have experienced it myself and I hear so many others share a similar experience, that being in nature is healing. Getting our hands into the earth with gardening, walking along the beach, taking a hike, or even lying in the grass brings an almost indescribable sense of well-being. Connecting with the earth’s electrical charge is thought to aid in pain reduction, modulate the immune system, and reduce inflammation. It also can lead to feeling more centered, allowing us to focus on what is most important to us.

2. Meditation/prayer Setting your intentions in quiet solitude using meditation or prayer provides clarity. Meditation may seem overwhelming, but you can make it simple by not expecting perfection in the process. I suggest finding guided meditations online that grab your attention. Try various guided meditations until you find one that feels right.

3. Exercise In addition to the more obvious benefits of exercise, it temporarily unblocks stagnation thereby creating space for objectivity.

4. Journaling Getting thoughts on paper helps clarify intentions.

There are many benefits to literally speaking our truths and discussing our values out loud with a trusted confidant. Bouncing ideas and having meaningful discussions can help us determine our framework and organize our thinking. Sometimes friends and family may not provide the most objective perspectives and professional counseling or life coaching may be more appropriate, while at other times a friend or family member is the most perfect fit! When we live in alignment with our values, we are honoring ourselves in the most self-loving way. From there, our vibrancy shines to our loved ones, our neighbors and even strangers we see out and about. It becomes not only the best gift you can give yourself, but that of our community. So cheers to 2026, let’s make this the best year yet!
