That of course includes the food and drinks, the aesthetic and design, but most importantly - the people. Health and Wellness is a priority for us here at Darien Lifestyle and we got tips from Kelly Meany, a licensed clinical social worker, licensed drug and alcohol counselor, and life coach located in Darien. The Norwalk Art Space was recently awarded a $15,900 CT Cultural Fund Operating Support Grant from CT Humanities (CTH). CT Cultural Fund Operating Support Grants assist organizations as they recover from the pandemic and maintain and grow their ability to serve their community and the public. The Norwalk Art Space will use this operating support grant to help fulfill its mission to enhance opportunities and equity in the Connecticut arts community.

KIMBERLY HORTON PERFECTS THE INTERIOR DESIGN PROCESS “If you were to pick a drink after a long day of work, what would it be?” “What is your love language?” Those are just two parts of a unique questionnaire that helps designer Kimberly Horton of KH Home Designs get to know her client’s style. In 2018, Kim was happily working in the medical field but as she was renovating and designing her current home, she felt a certain peace she hadn’t experienced in her medical role. On a whim, she made the decision to switch careers and start her own business. Just like that, Kim, established her LLC, KH Home Designs and never looked back. Kim, a now award-winning designer, continues to immerse herself in education, as she has throughout the years, to constantly hone her skillset. She completed several decorating and design programs from industry leaders to ensure she provides her clients with the very best services and products. When a new client reaches out to Kim, she kicks off the process by scheduling a complimentary introduction call to understand the scope of what the client is looking for. Once Kim has agreed to take on the project, she visits the space and the new client completes her one-of-a-kind questionnaire. While a few

questions might seem unexpected from an interior designer, Kim prides herself on fully understanding her clients, what styles they love, and how they’ll utilize the new space. Kim sees design beyond the four walls of the space. “I see the frustration, the lack of function, yes, but I also see the whole picture; the big dream far beyond the limitations of the client’s mind. It’s my job to push past their limiting beliefs into a dream they never knew was possible.” Aside from the nightcap and love language questions, Kim’s questionnaire allows her clients to react to visuals she provides, share color preferences, and even react to various metals. This can be a tricky process when two partners are designing a space together; the questionnaire comes in handy as it allows Kim to pinpoint commonalities between the two opinions. This entire process allows Kim to hear her client's pain points and frustrations, even when they can’t articulate it themselves, anticipate their present and future needs, and deliver a timeless look that will grow with them. value and earns her client’s praise. As a most recent client shares, Kim “was an essential link between us and our contractor in the design and had a huge positive impact on the final product.” Here, she takes over the tedious decision-making as her client’s advocate and goes above and beyond to ensure a streamlined process. She prides herself on always having a backup plan for when things aren’t going as expected. That's a win-win for everybody. Kim’s magic really works. Not only do her clients love her smooth process, solution driven designs and their final results but in 2020, HGTV approached Kim to participate in their Designer of the Year awards. While she didn’t expect it to go far, she was crowned HGTV’s Designer of the Year, People’s Choice after a rigorous elimination process. Clients absolutely love Kim’s reveal day, where they live out their own celebrity experience with her HGTVstyle reveal. They feel like Kim rolled out the red carpet for them when they come home to a new beautifully furnished space with all the spoilings - champagne, desserts, and a special thank-you gift. And as one former client describes, “It’s an unforgettable experience to share with your partner.” When looking for an interior designer, you might seek someone who has a similar taste to your own but Kim doesn’t subscribe to any particular style herself; she’s done it all. Kim helps her clients see outside of the box. “Homeowners often define their style as one singular design style. In fact, most people fall into many different design categories and it’s my job to deliver that one-ofa-kind design.” She says the biggest critical design error people struggle with is scale. Her general rule is two thirds. For example: if you have a credenza, the artwork above it should be 2/3 the size of that credenza. Most of the time, when a room feels unbalanced, it's usually a scale issue. And if you’re feeling like your space is falling flat, explore textures. Look to incorporate wood, glass, metal, velvet, linen, and something three-dimensional to make the room feel richer. Amber was tasked with creating a dream home that accommodates their family and their lifestyle. When we spoke to Amber, she said “It is an honor to be entrusted to build an environment / atmosphere where people can retreat - to a focus on themselves, their family, their friends, and a life they enjoy. It is my passion and one of the most gratifying feelings in the world”. Amber’s approach to individualization to each client and personal attention to detail along with her ability to draw plans in both CAD and Sketchup 3-D separates her from other firms. She sat down with the Pelley family to see what things would really look like before they made any decisions. Darien Lifestyle was able to get a sneak peak into their gorgeous home and share some of the detailed finishings.

THE KITCHEN The kitchen is the heart of the home, but in this scenario, a floorplan update and cabinetry rework was required to breathe new life into the space. An enclosed desk area and walk-in closet were removed, which opened it up for a sitting area that enjoys the morning light. This opened the space up for a sitting area that enjoys the morning light and a breakfast/wine bar with open shelving. Woodland Partners installed a new island with a new, polished calacatta capri marble countertop with a waterfall edge and seating for 5. One of the requirements was that the Pelley’s could watch the morning news over coffee so Amber creatively added some new pieces to accommodate a recessed TV and a wall oven was integrated to generate balance. The upper cabinetry was removed on the other side in favor of floating shelves with LED lighting. The countertops were brought up as the

backsplash throughout the kitchen, and faux painting was done behind the floating shelves to bring the countertop design up. The new floor plan allowed for three bedrooms with ensuite baths instead of four bedrooms and two baths. Bertch vanities are enhanced with beautiful polished iceberg blue quartzite countertops. There was just enough material for a makeup table. That same bathroom has alternating 12” x 24” shower tile and 3” x 12” arctic white glass tile walls with a herringbone tile shower floor. The other bath has 12” x 24” gray polished marble tile with an ivy gray polished marble shower floor and niche accent.

THE OFFICE The office posed a challenge as Scott wanted an open fireplace. The Phoenix TrueView Indoor gas fireplace by Heat and Glo was chosen for its authentic look and glass free view. Venting requirements necessitated a framing change in the ceiling above and a false

chimney was erected on the roof. Natural thin stone with a variegated depth was installed at the fireplace on the front and side walls as well as the new chimney. An LG cool art HVAC system was installed to provide a contemporary solution for temperature control at the office.

THE BASEMENT One of the coolest parts of the home is in the basement. An oak bar was reframed with acoustiblok sound proofing within the new walls and at the ceiling, as well as a homosote layer and foam interior to create a new sound studio for the owner. The original basement oak wall paneling was painted. New cabinet hardware and flooring creates a gym section and a separate section for ping pong. Breakfast is deemed as ‘the most important meal of the day’ for a reason! Current evidence states that those who start their day off with breakfast consume a more nutritious diet, and are found to be at a decreased risk for chronic diseases. Our brain function relies on carbohydrates, and when we sleep – our body relies on our storage form of carbohydrates to sustain us throughout the night. However, by the time we wake up, that supply is limited, and our body requires that we ‘break the fast’ that we were in while asleep. Prolonging this fast until midday limits the brain’s function and ability to work at peak performance. Thus, breakfast helps prevent brain fog, allowing a more decisive and better decision making. Research suggests that starting the day off with a balanced meal allows for better decision making in food choices, and may even prevent feelings of uncontrolled craving for less nutritious foods later on in the day.

A QUICK AND EASY ADDITION TO SPRUCE UP YOUR BREAKFAST: MUESLI What is muesli? Muesli is essentially unbaked granola! When preparing granola, a source of sugar, such as honey, must be used for the granola to cluster. Although granola is delicious and certainly a great option to include in moderation, swapping it out for muesli reduces the amount of added sugar included in your breakfast. Muesli can be purchased at most grocery stores, but making your own muesli at home allows for customization! See my go-to muesli recipe below. The amount that I include for each ingredient typically varies depending on how long I want the muesli to

Muesli is a great addition to breakfast; it is a source of whole grains because of the rolled oats, and the nuts contribute as a good source of dietary fat, so I typically try to add a protein source to it. 1. Enjoy as cereal! Combine muesli with milk and top with slices of bananas 2. Use it as a crunchy topping to your favorite yogurt 3. Turn it into overnight oats 4. DL: WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE? KM: Darien Counseling and Coaching offers individual therapy sessions serving children, adolescents, and adults. We provide both telehealth and in person sessions to meet the scheduling needs of each individual. Some people who may have busy jobs or who have children like the option to be able to slip in their office or car for an hour to do telehealth if they don’t have a chance to drive to the physical office. We also offer group therapy sessions to those who are interested both in person or hybrid models. We specialize in anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and trauma as well as relationship issues. We figure out the problem the client is having in current day life and work through how the client is being held back based on past experiences or their own limited beliefs. “If it’s hysterical, it’s historical”. We also offer 90 day coaching session packages if you aren’t necessarily looking for therapy, but you have a specific goal that you want help obtaining.

DL: WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO GO INTO COUNSELING? KM: From a young age, I’ve been intuitive and empathetic. As I pursued my education, it became more clear to me that the way to use my strengths and gifts was to help others in a clinical setting. We all have a story to tell and sometimes sharing that story is the beginning of the healing process. We all incur struggles throughout our lifetime myself included and it can be very helpful to have someone to talk to and process through some of these issues.

DL: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO’S HESITANT TO REACH OUT FOR HELP FOR THE FIRST TIME? KM: There are many times in life when we take the first step into the unknown, and reaching out for help for our mental health is just one more example of that. I’m so proud of my clients who start their healing journey. Anytime is the right time. Hesitance means that there is a part of you that does want to reach out to another possible route to situations going on in your life. Taking the first step can be the hardest part, but people report almost immediately the anxiety eases after making the first phone call. We care about your health and make the intake process simple and efficient so we can get you in for your initial appointment. It’s important for me to stay on top of my field, so I really invest in continuing education and various conferences throughout the year so that I’m up to date on the latest modalities of treatment to better serve all my clients. Recently, I attended the global exchange conference down in Orlando which was the largest mental health conference in the world and was able to meet world renowned doctors such as Dr. Richard Swartz, Dr. Gabor Mate, and Dr. Claudia Black. Not every client requires the same type of therapy because we are all unique with different struggles. After the initial evaluation of the clients, we discuss the best possible treatment plan to start our journey together. This can change as more sessions occur, and fluctuate based on the client's needs. My practices include EMDR, CBT, DBT, IFS, Pet therapy, as well as talk therapy or walk therapy. If a CONTINUED >

client may benefit from group therapy, I offer different types of group therapy sessions throughout the year with topics ranging from relapse prevention to teen empowerment support groups, as well as weekend workshops that are tailored to community needs. Individual therapy and group therapy have many benefits while serving different purposes. Sometimes people cannot afford therapy due to life events or situations, and I never want that to be a barrier for people who are actively seeking help. As a result, we offer sliding scales when needed and accept husky insurance. We hope to hire more clinicians in 2023 to be able to serve more people within our community. It is my passion to help others.
