As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. In this issue, we are highlighting kids who are making a difference in our community. We also wanted to share a few of our go-to spots to enjoy with kids and fur-kids. As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love.

Portland is a coastal oasis, a walkable city with award-winning restaurants, art galleries, locally-owned boutiques and shops, and great breweries, there is a ton to do and see in this amazing, small city. The Portland Harbor Hotel is in the heart of Portland’s historic Old Port district one block from the waterfront. With it’s central location it is the perfect place to stay and enjoy the great walking city. Pro tip: bring sneakers and bonus the hotel is pet friendly. Our sweet pup, Jasper really enjoyed not having to stay home and miss the trip.
Located in the hotel is the Harbor Bistro + Terrace, nestled at the Portland Harbor Hotel in the heart of the Old Port District, is not your typical hotel restaurant. The unique layout of a dining room and lounge together with a private, secluded terrace, offer an elegant and exclusive setting on Portland’s competitive restaurant scene. It was at about this time in the trip we learned that Portland was a culinary lovers dream! The menu is imaginative while using the humble ingredients sourced from local farmers, fishermen and foragers creating a dining & entertainment option that redefines what it means to be “a hotel restaurant.” Offering local, coastal cuisine, Harbor Bistro+Terrace is a great place to come together, eat well, and feel at home. When you are finished with the perfect lobster roll it is time to go enjoy the most beautiful Portland sunset. Head on over to Bud Light Park. It is about a 10 minute drive from the hotel and one of the best sites to be seen. We curated a small list of some of our favorite and can’t miss spots in Portland. What a bustling tiny city full of love and delicious food. Continue on in the pages of this issue to see the opposite experience on a Maine’s favorite tiny island, Diamond Cove. Take the two trips back to back and it is the perfect combination of fun and ultimate relaxation.
Must visit spots in Portland Central Provisions: make a reservation, this restaurant is a must. Delicious cocktails, perfect small plates, top notch service and an incredible atmosphere. Eventide: a seafood joint that gives you the authentic summer-inMaine year round known for local oysters, the lobster roll and the crab roll. They don’t take reservations so be prepared to wait a bit. Tandem Coffee: Became our go-to coffee spot, you can’t go wrong with any of their food but highly recommend the egg sandwich (available until it runs out so don’t sleep in). Wharf: located on the warp in the Old Port neighborhood, this upscale seafood restaurant should be one of your stops for a dozen (or two) of oysters. Root Wild Kombucha: a local kombucha brewery with and without alcohol makes it a great pit stop as you walk through the city exploring. Eastern Promenade: perfect for a walk or run along water, it’s a great spot for a picnic where you can take advantage of the local food trucks. Western Portland Promenade: After picking up your morning drink from Tandem Coffee, take advantage of this lovely walk.

Local Writers Launch New Children's Book

Marion Green and Liz Barron are two local writers who recently published the smashing success children’s book, “What Hat Are You Wearing?” Darien Lifestyle spoke with the two authors.
DL: CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT WHAT HAT ARE YOU WEARING? The book is intended to help children learn that they can influence the way that they feel not only about themselves, but in everyday situations as well. So many kids (and adults) fall into the trap of unknowingly perpetuating unwanted feelings and don’t realize that they have the ability to change

their perspective regardless of the situation at hand. Mindset shifts can begin simply by asking ourselves questions like, “what do I want to feel instead of this?” or “how do I want to feel about this?”. “What Hat Are You Wearing?” uses a hat as a metaphor for feelings. It highlights the way that pausing and reflecting on an unfavorable feeling can help us identify the emotions that we want to sustain.
DL: WHY DID YOU WRITE THIS BOOK? MARION: One of my professional missions has been to help children with early mindset training. The goal of this story is to help teach kids that they have the ability to choose how they want to feel about themselves, everyday situations, and even their moods. Learning this skill can help children shift from an undesirable mindset to a more desirable one. LIZ: The toll that the past few years has taken on emotional well-being has been tremendous and as a parent of young children, it has been difficult to witness such struggles. Our story provides a valuable strategy to help kids see that even when they can’t control what’s happening around them, they can control how they want to think about it.
DL: WHAT DO YOU HOPE COMES OUT OF THIS STORY FOR CHILDREN READING IT OR PARENTS READING IT TO THEIR KIDS? Our hope is to provide our young readers with an “easy to remember” strategy to use when they are struggling and to give our adult readers relatable language to use when discussing their children’s difficult emotions. Oftentimes, parents and caregivers struggle with how to best address children’s fears, negative attitudes, low self-esteem and difficult moods. Asking children, “what hat are you wearing right now?” instead of “what’s wrong?” can quickly give a child a way to identify their current mindset and feelings. Following up with a second question like, “how would you like to feel instead?” enables a child to reflect on ways

that changing their perspective might feel better by choosing a different mindset that is more appealing. Our story uses everyday, age appropriate scenarios as examples to help both children and adults see how easily this strategy can be applied.
DL: WHAT IS THE VALUE OF “WHAT HAT ARE YOU WEARING?” The concept of “mindset training” is something that can be introduced both at home and in the classroom at an early age. It helps teach young children that they have the power to choose how they want to feel. Knowing that they don’t have to stay stuck in negative emotional cycles can leave them feeling empowered. MARION: I started using the “What Hat Are You Wearing?” approach with some of my young clients a while back. I found it to be very effective when trying to help them find ways to re-frame their attitudes towards themselves as well as fear provoking or unfavorable situations. This technique is especially successful when parents or caregivers use the metaphors to support the strategy at home.
DL: HOW THEY DECIDED TO WRITE THIS BOOK: LIZ: I am a freelance writer and Marion and I met a few years ago when I interviewed her for an article that I was working on. MARION: We had been thinking about writing a book together for a while and last year while I was at the Kentucky Derby, seeing all of the elaborate hats reminded me of the strategy I had been using with my young clients.
