Dr. Mark Henry Park in Bridgeland honors retired CFISD superintendent

Bridgeland has dedicated a park to Dr. Mark Henry for his commitment, integrity, foresight, leadership, and civic wisdom. Dr. Henry, who is also a Bridgeland resident, retired in December of 2023 after 12 years as superintendent for Cy-Fair Independent School District (CFISD). Occupying one-acre in Parkland Village, Dr. Mark Henry Park is located along Parkland Common adjacent to the educational village that includes Wells Elementary, Sprague Middle School and Bridgeland High School. It’s location make it the ideal park to honor the former administrator, principal and teacher. Top Trends in Window Coverings

For those seeking to transform the look or feel of their home, adding custom window coverings is one of the best ways to elevate a room or living space.

Since opening their doors in 1981, Window Magic Blinds and Drapery, a Hunter Douglas Gallery Dealer, has helped thousands of customers in the Houston area find custom window treatments. Co-owner Kathy Lancaster explains the benefits of choosing custom rather than ordering ready-made curtains. “It just completes your room, your home,” Lancaster said. “It makes it look a lot nicer, especially if you've got a new home and you want it to look good and want to be proud of it.”

Along with high-quality and durable window treatments, Lancaster adds that their products offer customizable options designed to fit windows of various shapes and sizes. Customers can choose from hundreds of colors and materials as well as light-filtering and room-darkening options with each product. “Pretty much anything you want can be done, and if it can't be done, we'll explain to you why we don't think it's the best choice or decision and give you some options,” Lancaster said. Although most window treatment styles have been around for several years, Lancaster said some of the popular window treatments today lean toward modern but classic designs.

MOTORIZED ROLLER SHADES

Lancaster said roller shades are currently one of the top options for custom coverings. From sunrooms to home offices, Window Magic’s website says roller shades offer a clean, contemporary look for any room.

However, many customers are also opting for roller shades with a power operating system, which allows a convenient way to adjust lighting and privacy. “Everything we have can be motorized, there’s just different ways to operate them,” she said. “You can operate them from your phone or through an app or from a remote control.”

SHUTTERS

Shutters are another classic design that is on trend, Lancaster explains. Window Magic offers three kinds of Hunter Douglas shutters that range from real hardwood to man-made materials made to withstand heat and moisture. Choose from different finishes, stains and sizes. “They always look nice,” Lancaster said. “Ours are true custom shutters. They're custom painted to match whatever paint you have.”

DRAPERY PANELS

Custom draperies are an elegant addition to any space. Lancaster said adding drapery panels to shades or shutters is a great way to dress up and add interest to a room. “We do a lot now where it's a nice broad across, and then a panel down each side of the window,”’ she said. “It looks great and really adds a lot to the room and makes it look nicer.”

TEXTURES AND PRINTS

While neutrals and linen have always been popular for window coverings, Lancaster said she is seeing more textures and printed fabrics this year. She adds that colors such as green and blue are also coming back into style. “A texture has some raised threads and has a little bit more design and a little more interest than just a flat linen,” she said.

For those interested in custom window coverings, Lancaster advises visiting their showroom to view the products in person. Window Magic also helps recommend options based on window style and home décor. “If they can bring some snaps and photos of their windows or furniture that will speak 1,000 words,” Lancaster said.

St. Patrick's Day Cocktail Hour

GRASSHOPPER COCKTAIL

Instead of green beer opt for decadence this St. Patrick's Day.

Ingredients:

• ¾ fluid ounce crème de menthe

• ¾ fluid ounce white crème de cacao

• ¼ fluid ounce heavy cream

• 1 cup ice

directions:

Combine crème de menthe, crème de cacao, cream, and ice in a cocktail shaker. Cover and shake until chilled. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, and add fresh mint as a garnish. For a frothy version of this cocktail, add all ingredients into a blender.
