There is an underlying sentiment this time of year, the feeling of being torn between resisting another commercialized greeting card holiday or allowing ourselves to be drawn into it. A choice between a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a lavish gift or just say a kind word? But there are not really just two choices, right? If there are only two options, is it really much of a choice? We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences, priorities, and beliefs, but what we hold in common is the opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them– and that can be year-round. We don’t need a holiday to show love. Above all, having an unfailing love for one another overlooks unkindness and unselfishly seeks the best for others. While we teeter between the exceptional chill of this Winter and look towards the renewal and healing that comes with Spring, we hope you’ll find inspiration to come together with the people in your life as you read the stories of others in our community. Regardless of how you choose to spend February 14, we are delighted to highlight what’s to love in Cypress every day of the year! This month, I had the absolute joy to get to know Ana Cristina Owens, co-owner with her husband Michael, of Anthem Bakery Collective. Their genuine love for family, faith, and really good food are evident. They use only quality ingredients in all of their delicious baked goods–including milling their own organic wheat. 1: Cypress resident, Sophia Heschel, age 9, was selected as an Ambassador for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). As a Youth Ambassador, she’ll create awareness through advocacy, share her Type 1D story and volunteer her time to support JDRF’s mission. 2-7: The Cy-fair and Cy-Creek Professional Firefighters Associations, along with the Cy-Fair FD, Cy-Creek FD, and Cypress Ace Hardware partnered to raise funds to provide kids in the Cypress community with bikes and helmets. Thanks to the support of the Cypress community, they delivered 100 bikes to CFISD students, and 30 each to Cy-Fair Helping Hands and Cy-Hope.

A True Love Language Archer Calder could never communicate with his only sister. Della Calder has a rare genetic condition called Bainbridge-Ropers syndrome, which affects her ability to move, eat, and use verbal communication. Della had always used hand signals and short sounds to communicate with her family members and caregivers. She’d also been introduced to augmentative and alternative communications (AAC), but her family had never been truly satisfied with the results. “I've always had an amazing relationship with my sister Della. Even with her disability, I still feel like we have a really good connection and relationship,” said Archer. “We

actually used to eat lunch together every day when we both went to Cypress Woods high school which was really nice, and I would spend a lot of time volunteering in her class.” With the insufficient results that ACC provided Della, Archer decided to take matters into his own hands. He developed an application called FreeSpeech because he realized that AAC could be better utilized in Della's life. “She'd have a bunch of words from school loaded on her device but nothing she actually wanted to talk about, so seeing that showed me there was definitely a need for a more usable app that can connect more people to the words they use every day,” said Archer.

“Also seeing my parents pay so much money for AAC over the years really inspired me to create FreeSpeech as I believed very strongly that though it was amazing that my parents made the sacrifice to buy those AAC products, no other family should have to do the same.” The app, which has been out for about a year and has undergone a number of iterations, is free for anyone to use at any time. Della uses FreeSpeech for things like asking for snacks, asking for Starbucks or McDonalds, and she even uses it to talk about her favorite shows and movies. She likes to talk about her friends and sometimes just has conversations with Archer or other family members. “She will just randomly use the app to speak about something and I will just talk back to her,” remarked Archer. “It's really amazing because that is something that she was never able to do before so easily.” Archer has always been interested in computers, and using computers to create things digitally. Early in elementary school, he dabbled in digital music production and experimented with digital art and game design when he was in middle and high school. He was captivated by coding and computer language early on, so creating an app like FreeSpeech was right up his alley.

“I got the idea for FreeSpeech when I was 15 or 16 while out getting lunch with my parents,” said Archer. “I basically just got the idea that I could use my passion for programming to help people and change lives which was really edifying for me to consider at the time and it still is of course.” Archer has more future plans for FreeSpeech too, as well as interests in developing other applications, such as creating a suite of products to try and create better AAC services for everyone. For example, he wants to create an app that allows people to read books in an AAC-like interface, so his sister could read her favorite storybooks out loud with big images and lots of accessibility options. With his impressive technology acumen and work ethic, he’s likely to accomplish his goals. “I want people to know that Della, and anyone else who struggles with disabilities, are regular people like anyone else and they deserve the help and attention we afford to people who are not disabled or who maybe have less visible disabilities,” said Archer. “That's why I think technology-related accessibility is important because everyone deserves the ability to enjoy technology. As for me, I'm just a regular guy who enjoys software development and digital activism.”

Here’s some news to cheer about: the CFISD Board of Trustees passed its fourth consecutive annual budget that featured a tax decrease from the prior year. The proposed rate of $1.2948 is down $.0444 from the year before. When you walk into Webb’s Automotive, it’s easy to feel at home. The space is clean, bright and someone will always welcome you with a friendly smile. The client lounge is roomy, rustic and arranged with oversized couches which make for a cozy place to unwind while awaiting a quick oil change or state vehicle inspection. Owners Tracie and Roy Webb are common sights around the shop and take pride in keeping daily operations running smoothly. Tracie handles behind-the-scenes tasks while Roy keeps watch over the shop’s fourteen car bays, always the sentinel at the ready in case teammates ask for help. “I’m circling like a mother hen,” he says, with a smile in his eyes. “They know if they need help, grab me.” The Webbs pride themselves in running an honest business with professionalism and expert auto care. Both come from parents who ran their own businesses so opening their own enterprise was a natural progression. Roy had a knack for fixing things while Tracie enjoyed business operations, so in 1995, they launched Webb’s Automotive in Copperfield with Roy handling all repairs and services.

Over the years, the Webb’s Automotive team grew as did their own family. The Webbs have two adult children, Haley and Wyatt, who have spent time supporting the family business as well. Haley, worked in the shop during her college summer breaks, while Wyatt, a junior at Texas A&M, works during college breaks handling state inspections and scrap metal recycling. The Webb’s nephew also worked at Webb’s Automotive for ten years as the service manager. Today, they employ a team of 10 auto care experts and technicians, many of whom have been with the business for more than 20 years. The Webbs credit their employees for their growth and achievements. “We thank God for our success and give our employees all the credit,” Tracie says. “They are loyal, hardworking, and honest. We are like family.” Their ties and their affinity for the Cypress community only grew stronger when they decided in 2011 to open their current location on Mueschke Road, a three-acre property lined with burly pine trees and a peaceful pasture. What the two enjoy the most about Cypress is its small-town feel set against the backdrop of the Houston suburbs. Both their children graduated and played sports at Cy-Ranch High School–Haley was a swimmer and Wyatt a football player–which allowed the family to forge deep ties within the community. Many of their customers are neighbors, friends or young car owners who the Webb children knew growing up. And that’s exactly the way the Webbs would have it. “We feel very blessed to serve the Cypress community,” Tracie says. “They have trusted us with their families’ vehicles and we want to give back and be an important part of the community as well.”

Now, after 27 years in business, the Webbs are still growing their enterprise. This year, they are expanding their facility to add four extra car bays and two additional staffers. The expansion will allow Webb’s Automotive to help more customers and have a quicker turnaround on services. The shop offers everything you need to keep your vehicle running at peak performance. Made Visible In 2003 an aspiring culinary apprentice and a young banquet chef met while working at the River Oaks Country Club during a clay court tennis tournament. Both graduates of The Art Institute with degrees in Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management, they both had a love for good food, and soon, a love for each other. More than seventeen years of marriage later, they have six children, Sophia (15), Jacob (13), Zoe (11), Giana (10), and twins Jonah and Evangeline (6) all of whom they homeschool in a self-described; “incredible journey of love, patience, and devotion.” Michael, a native Houstonian, and Ana Cristina, originally from Quito, Ecuador, take all of their culinary experience, and education and combine it with a passion for family and community. They always knew if they ever had the opportunity to bake professionally, they would offer their community the same nutritious bread they love to make at home. We sat down with them to get to know this local family and learn about their passion for baking.

Our goal is to create a cinnamon roll that would be delectable yet not give you a sugar coma. Our cinnamon rolls are some of our most popular items. Shortbread cookies: Not all white flour is made equal. We think that in moderation some white flour is okay. Our gourmet shortbread cookies are made with organic all-purpose flour and they are outstanding! I’ve worked diligently to incorporate edible flowers, herbs, fruits, and spices, and we’ve accomplished a delicious cookie that is not too sweet yet, full of flavor. Our Valentine's Day-inspired cookies are made with edible organic roses and cardamom, flavored with strawberries with dark chocolate.

ANY ADVICE FOR NEW BAKERS? Don't overthink it! Trial and error are inevitable but the process can be enjoyable, yummy, and fun! Include your littles, and your not-so-littles as well. Making memories with them will last a lifetime over a bowl of batter.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE? Plans are in motion to start offering baking and milling workshops. This has been requested and it's something we are very excited about! Our biggest prayer and biggest obstacle, right now, is finding the ideal location to hold the workshops.

The Cypress Ranch Cheer Team was selected to participate in the 2022 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. The iconic parade has been thrilling spectators since 1924. The team members were part of the 600 cheerleaders known as the Spirit of America Cheerleaders and were the only team to perform on the Today Show prior to the parade. They were also interviewed locally for KPRC's Houston Life. While in NYC, the team enjoyed Broadway shows, ice skating at Rockefeller Center and seeing the sights including the Statue of Liberty, 9/11 Museum, Empire State Building and Times Square.

BOARD APPROVES NAMESAKES FOR CFISD EXHIBIT CENTER ARENA The CFISD Board approved Mike and Darlene Jarrar as the namesakes for the arena of the CFISD Exhibit Center. The Jarrars have generously supported the CFISD Livestock Show & Sale since 2003, donating a total of $1,440,606 to student projects. Over 400 students have benefited directly from the generosity of the Jarrars, and countless more have benefitted indirectly. Native Houstonians and supporters of public education, Mrs. Jarrar graduated from Jersey Village High School in 1978, and all four of their children attended CFISD schools. Mr. Jarrar remains the president and CEO of Jarrar & Company, Inc., a Houston-based commercial plumbing company he founded in 1978. The Mike and Darlene Jarrar Arena is located at the CFISD Exhibit Center at 11206 Telge Road.

CY-FAIR BASKETBALL COACH ANN ROUBIQUE EARNS 700TH CAREER WIN Cy-Fair celebrated girls’ basketball coach Ann Roubique’s 700th career win in a ceremony honoring and presenting Roubique with a ball signed by the players. Roubique’s milestone victory came on the road against Cy-Park High School. The Bobcats then gave Roubique her career victory number 701 with the 62-56 win over Houston Bellaire, one of many teams led by one of Coach Roubique’s former players. This milestone win is even more special and unique because all of the wins have been at one school. Roubique has proudly been at Cy-Fair High School since 1989.

CFISD STUDENTS RECOGNIZED IN SUPERINTENDENT HOLIDAY CARD CONTEST First, second, and third-place winners, and Best-in-Show awards were given for the annual Superintendent Holiday Card Contest, selected from 254 entries across 88 campuses. Warner fourth grade student Trisha Arun won Elementary Best in Show for her piece titled "Cozy Holiday Nights.” Goodson eighth grader Livia Voong won Middle School Best in Show for her piece titled “Naughty or Nice,” and Jersey Village sophomore Addison Flores won High School Best in Show for her piece titled “Home for the Holidays.”

CFISD STAFF MEMBERS, STUDENTS HONORED WITH AWARDS FROM AMERICAN RED CROSS Four staff members and two student lifeguards were recognized for their actions saving the life of two students. The Lifesaving Award is the highest award given by the American Red Cross to individuals for saving a life using the skills learned in an American Red Cross training. Jonathan Mayer, CFISD director of aquatics, and student lifeguards Cameron Dilney and Christian O’Daniel were recognized for saving the life of a student-athlete during a water polo game. In addition, Dustin Cedidla and Kimberly Faterkowski, Cy-Springs athletic trainers, and Johnna Simpson, Cy-Springs school nurse, were honored for their response to a medical emergency involving a student who was not breathing and had no pulse. The student was able to recover and return to school two weeks later. All CFISD school nurses, clinic assistants, coaches, athletic trainers, sponsors, band directors, drill team directors and LIFE Skills teachers are required to obtain CPR certification.

CFISD THEATRE ARTS STUDENTS EXCEL AT TEXAS THESPIAN FESTIVAL Over 140 CFISD high school theatre arts students received first and second place rankings at the 2022 Texas Thespian Festival and the students qualified for the national competition, sponsored by the Educational Theatre Association. Cy-Ridge received the distinction of an Honor Troupe 2022-2023. Cy-Woods performed A Monster Calls as part of the festival’s play marathon. Cy-Woods junior Logan LaFave and freshman Masen Spears were both named Excellent Performer. Bridgeland was honored with an All-Star Troupe Display Award.

CY WOODS HS WILDCAT MENTAL HEALTH ALLIANCE WINS TXSSC AWARD The Cy-Woods Wildcat Mental Health Alliance (WMHA) received the Programs Spotlight Award from the Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC). The group was nominated after they hosted the “Walk for a Tomorrow” event on campus bringing together students, staff, parents and community members together in support of mental health and suicide prevention. Wishes are a foundational element of many childhood fairy tales, but they’re by no means childish. The prospect of a wish coming true can help someone summon the will to keep going, to find a path through the darkness, to find a strength they didn’t know they had. Granting the wish of a child who has a critical illness is more than just a nice thing to do. It can change the dynamic of treatment, says Brian Smith, director of communications and marketing for the Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization that has spent decades

making wishes a reality for children across the U.S. and the world. “The great thing about Make-A-Wish is that all operations are geared to local work and involvement,” says Shelly Millwee, chief mission and strategy officer for the Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana chapter. “Everything we do in our chapter is for the kids in those areas. When someone volunteers or donates to Make-A-Wish, they’re impacting kids they see at the store, sit next to at church, and wave to on the street each day. The impact is local.” Shelly says that right now in Harris County, around 323 children are waiting for wishes to be granted. CONTINUED >

Make-A-Wish was founded as the result of the desire to help a little boy in Arizona experience his lifelong dream of becoming a law enforcement officer. It was 1980, and 7-year-old Christopher Greicius had been diagnosed with leukemia. Through serendipitous circumstances, he became close friends with U.S. Customs Agent Tommy Austin. Tommy, who lives in The Woodlands, has traveled across the U.S. and the world in support of the organization that he helped to found and now serves as director emeritus of the Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana chapter. He recalls a fateful evening when Chris’s mother brought him over to see Tommy and his wife. “He was gray, his teeth were chattering, his hands were shaking. I knew it was close.” He was determined to make Chris’s dream of becoming a law officer come true. No one had ever done what Tommy and his law enforcement friends were envisioning. Yet they kept asking. Putting aside possible legal ramifications and cutting through the red tape, the Arizona Department of Public Safety agreed to help, making Chris an “officer for a day” with all the trimmings. When Tommy called Chris to tell him what was going to happen. “His little voice was barely audible.” But something switched on inside of him when Tommy described what Chris was going to get to do—meet with the director of the Arizona DPS, receive a badge during a swearing-in ceremony, and take a ride in a DPS helicopter. All of a sudden, his entire demeanor changed, says Tommy. The morning of the ride, Chris called Tommy bright and early. “’I cleaned up my

room, made my bed, had my shower. I’m ready to go!’ He was in the driveway when I pulled up. Ear-to-ear smile!” This child who had been diagnosed with only a few days to live was transformed, says Tommy. Just how powerful a wish can be is revealed in a 2022 study funded by MakeA-Wish and conducted by an independent firm that surveyed more than 3,400 participants including healthcare providers, wish kids and their parents, and Make-AWish volunteers. “One hundred percent of medical providers said the wish experience provides a child with improved emotional well-being. 98 percent said it improves a child’s physical well-being. 95 percent of parents said the wish brought the family closer together, and 95 percent of wish kids said the experience helped them overcome feelings of sadness--they felt more hopeful about the future after their wish was granted. Shelly says wish requests run the gamut of possibilities: special trips, backyard playgrounds, shopping sprees, becoming a superhero, a fireman--or a police officer, just as Chris Greicius wished. Though some wish kids suffer from terminal illnesses, over 70 percent live into adulthood. A significant number go on to become Make-A-Wish volunteers themselves, says Shelly. The code that law enforcement officers live by is to “never give up, no matter what. You never desert your partner, even unto death, and Chris was going to be my partner,” says Tommy Austin. Chris’s wish was granted on a Monday, and “Chris wasn’t supposed to live through Tuesday.” The wish helped him survive for 11 more precious days.
