Spring is a welcome time for new beginnings and as nature awakens, so does the opportunity to explore the fun our community has to offer. April means blooming bluebonnets, road trips and festivals, crawfish and country music. Personally, April is near and dear to me because it’s the month I was born. My birthday happens to be Earth Day, and I’ve always taken that to heart. One spring, when I was 11 years old, I once dug up a 12 foot by 12 foot space in the backyard, planted rows of tomato and cucumber seeds and nurtured them until harvest. I still have pictures of me posing proudly in front of my little patch of earth, cucumbers in hand, and happy as a canary. Now, as a more seasoned backyard gardener, I find it immensely comforting to wander around my garden boxes, get dirt under my nails and tend to my plant babies. It’s my own way of exploring, creating and cultivating something new each season. For our April issue, we bring you ideas for places you might wish to explore. From fantastic photo opportunities to exquisite travel destinations, we hope the stories featured this month will give you something to nurture your own dreams. Nearly 900 students got free eye exams and new glasses through a collaboration between the school district and the See to Succeed program, a health department initiative.
School and health department volunteers helped students who did not pass the state-mandated vision screenings visit with an optometrist and helped the children get fitted for glasses at the Berry Center, all at no cost to their families. When Kathy and Alan Lancaster worked for the same window treatment company in the late 1970s, they didn’t know they would fall in love and build a business of their own. They were working for the same company managing two different locations, living their separate lives. Fate has a funny way of stepping in though. They eventually met, started dating, and what came next was truly a labor of love that grew into something special. Loving the window treatment business, but wanting to do it their own way, Kathy and Alan launched a company of their own called Window Magic out of a small one-bedroom apartment in 1981. They spent countless hours planning and working, passing out flyers in local neighborhoods. From humble beginnings, Kathy and Alan turned Window Magic into a local fixture, making homes more beautiful using their magic touch.

They’ve watched the latest trends and styles in window coverings evolve and have built a thriving business offering commercial and residential custom window treatments across the city of Houston. Their success is built on 40 plus years of knowledge in the industry and a core belief that customer service should be truly personal. “If you hire us to create new shutters for your home, I’m coming to your house personally to take the measurements and get an idea of what you’re looking for and Kathy will explain the entire process to you from start to finish,” said Alan Lancaster. “It’s not like having someone random come out who is only in charge of selling window treatments but has little experience.” From shutters to shades, blinds, draperies, and even patio shades, Window Magic offers uber-custom window treatments (to within an eighth of an inch) specifically designed for the most attractive–and practical effects in your home. To Kathy and Alan, the idea of personalized service isn’t just lip service. As a family-owned business very familiar with the local community, they take serving the their customers with a personal touch seriously. They’ve made hundreds of residential customers happy with their lifetime-guaranteed window coverings and have completed commercial projects for notable buildings throughout the city. Window Magic is also a Hunter Douglas gallery dealer, which is a rare thing nowadays. In an era of online shopping, it’s hard to find a place that sells window treatments that has an actual showroom where you can investigate window treatments up close. “Customers who are ordering something like window coverings want to touch and feel the materials and see all of their options,” said Alan. “Our showroom gives people the chance to figure out how to operate all of the different types and see their choices of fabrics, colors, and materials.” Beyond the variety of window treatment offerings and great service, visitors get the sense that Kathy and Alan could be friends, and many people stop in just to visit. The independent travel agency based in Cypress marries unique travel experiences with detailed concierge service provided by its globe-trotting owners, Gerry and Adriana Sarmiento. After years of traveling around the globe as corporate executives, the two built the tour company as a way to share their love of exquisite dining and enchanting cultural excursions. The business grew organically from the couple’s upscale Italian eatery, Mezzanotte Ristorante on Grant Road, where Gerry is the chef and Adriana runs front of the house operations. When word spread that the two were arranging travel adventures for restaurant clients and friends, the pair decided to launch Mezzanotte Tours in order to serve more guests. Mezzanotte offers small-group tours as well as private travel arrangements for the guest who wishes to immerse themselves in the finest aspects of their destination’s local culture. From the Italian countryside, to fabulous wineries in Spain and Portugal, to the frozen glaciers of Patagonia, travelers can expect a seamless, exclusive experience. “We basically take everybody by the hand through these adventures,” Gerry says. “We look at every single detail of what’s in the trip so people don’t have to worry about anything.” The couple arranges every meal, cultural visit and transportation logistics. They work with trusted local guides to make their journey a relaxing immersive experience and make sure the tours are filled with culinary stops off the beaten path. Cy-Fair Student Artists Shine THIRTEEN CFISD ART STUDENTS EARN RODEO ART AWARDS CFISD’s student artist winners in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) School Art Program were announced after going through multiple district rounds of judging. A total of 13 winners were selected from the high school, middle school and elementary divisions and were displayed in the Hayloft Gallery at NRG Center during the rodeo, Feb. 28-March 20. In addition to receiving top awards, Cy-Springs senior Bridgeth Perez-Sanchez’s and Cy-Woods senior Ruchi Tiwari’s pieces were selected for the School Art Auction held March 13.
