Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. No matter the state of your home, its never too late to create change. This year, my family and I began organizing, repainting and redoing parts of our home to create new energy and welcome a new year. It did wonders to clear the mind and soul. In a world that can be stressful, let the home be a place where we build each other up. Make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love and express love everyday. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our attention away—to be truly present when spending time with our family instead of splintering our attention with technology or to-do lists. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to try. March is our Home and Design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it’s fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. In this year’s Home issue, we hope to leave you inspired. From our home to yours, we wish you love, peace and happiness.

A MODERN HOME RETREAT 20

O PE N H OU SE | HOM E + DE S I GN

INTERIOR DESIGNER TISH MCLEMORE DESIGNS HOME OFFERING BOTH FUNCTION AND BEAUTY These days, a home is more than just a nice place to eat and sleep. More than ever, our home is our office, our gym, a place for entertainment and a refuge for rest. Since the pandemic, Tish McLemore, owner and lead designer of McLemore Design Group, has seen more and more homeowners choosing to remake their space into a place they enjoy. “People are turning their homes into their retreat space,” Tish says. One of her latest endeavors is a modern, four-bedroom custom home in Bridgeland which she began designing when her clients had only the blueprints.

Owners Clayton and Shanna Clark wanted a home with a contemporary, elegant look that still felt cozy. Together with Tish, they created a space full of clean lines, eye-catching accents and practical features that fit their everyday lifestyle. Tish worked with inspiration from the owners and detailed conversations to establish the look and feel of the home. “All the decisions were very carefully made to make sure it was a reflection of them,” Tish says. The kitchen, the heart of the home, is a fine entertainment space with a sea-pearl colored quartzite island, matching countertops and ample room for

guest seating. The kitchen’s backsplash–a dark stone set in a herringbone pattern–provides an attractive contrast to the kitchen’s light and airy ambiance. The walk-in pantry, done by Closet Concepts HTX, is a tidy, organized storage space for grab-and-go snacks, cooking essentials and chilled beverages inside the Clark’s antique-style refrigerator. The kitchen opens into the home’s spacious living room where family and guests can gather around a striking 60-inch tiled electric fireplace. Around the corner, the Clark’s wanted a spacious bar with room for multiple TV sets. The couple, avid sports enthusiasts, wanted to be sure they and their guests could catch whatever sports game might be playing. “It’s an entertaining house for sure with lots of great spaces for people,” Tish says. Perhaps the biggest highlights of the home are the primary living quarters. The bedroom

was designed as a relaxing retreat filled with plenty of windows to allow for natural light. Custom bedside lighting fixtures give an added romantic and practical feel to the space. The primary bathroom, however, is certainly the place to unwind. Designed as a spa-like environment, the room features a free-standing soaking tub with a floor-to-ceiling antiqued mirror offset by gorgeous accent lights. Behind the bathtub is a car wash-style shower with two huge entrances and floor-toceiling, warm-grey colored wall tile. Further inside the bathroom is a his-and-hers main closet, also from Closet Concepts HTX, complete with a revolving shoe rack, island and vanity. Whether relaxing or entertaining, the home has everything one might need. McLemoreDesignGroup.com 832.684.3436

It was an uncle’s illness that inspired Dr. Celesta Ferreira to make eye health her life’s work. Years ago, her uncle was an active, hard-working man, until he had a stroke and went partially blind. Soon after he developed multiple sclerosis and needed constant care. Dr. Celesta, who was at the time applying to her medical program, found out that with a comprehensive eye exam, doctors have the ability to detect potential strokes and other diseases. When she learned this, she decided to do everything she could to help others improve their eye health and avoid a lifetime of disease. “The health of the eye gives insight to the body, far beyond your vision,” Dr. Celesta says. “It’s the key factor in preventing other diseases.” Dr. Celesta is now the owner and optometrist of Cypress Optique in Bridgeland, where she shares her passion for eye health with patients. She is enthusiastic, detailed and approaches patient care with kindness and expertise. Her office houses some of the latest medical imaging systems allowing Dr. Celesta to show her patients microscopic happenings in the back of the eye. Using retinal imaging, she can see things like swelling or color changes that could indicate diabetes, neurological or genetic disease. She can also see things like oxygen loss or cholesterol build up. Once she even predicted a woman was about to have a stroke. Using a highend camera, she creates vibrant visuals of both the surface and back of the eye. She also documents her microscopic

exam with video. The visuals help her patients to visually see the full picture of what’s really happening inside their eyes. “I want my patients to feel that I am more than just another physician speaking in doctor jargon,” she says. “My goal and my passion is to educate and motivate my patients to care for their eyes beyond simply updating a prescription.” Dr. Celesta also fuses her passion for quality eye health with her love for stylish eyewear. Cypress Optique carries a unique selection of hand-crafted, trendy glasses which Dr. Celesta picked herself. The frames are versatile and diverse, some made here in America and many handmade by Italian and Spanish designers. There are eco-friendly and environmentally conscious brands as well as classic, luxury and bold, funky styles. Dr. Celesta comes from a family of entrepreneurs and hopes to pass on her dedication to hard work and business onto her two boys, two-year-old Gabe and sevenmonth-old Danny. She envisions to eventually have them as regular visitors at Cypress Optique, adding to the family-focused atmosphere of her practice. “We’re here for our patients, and for their families,” Dr. Celesta says. “We want them to be excited to come see us. That’s truly the ultimate sign of success.” CypressOptique.com 10920 Fry Road Suite 550 281-942-8520

"Unification" and the artist Guilloume

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | ARTS + CULTURE

Life is a Festival ARTIST GUILLOUME CELEBRATES ABUNDANCE AND OUR COMMON BONDS ARTICLE BY LAURA GREEN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Anticipation is growing among local art lovers as this year’s Fidelity Investments The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival draws near. Consistently ranked as one of the area’s most popular events, the festival is also recognized nationally as a premier celebration of art and artists. “I love the festival. You in The Woodlands are very unique in holding festivities that bring it all together—community, music and art,” says featured artist Guilloume. “The festival is unique. It belongs to everyone. When they called me for 2022, I was very honored.” The Columbian-born minimalist artist has created his own unique style which he calls “Bolismo,” a technique that makes use of simple, rounded shapes, along with texture and color, to convey the human form, emotions and relationships. Eighty-five percent of everything that exists in the universe is circular in shape, explains Guilloume. “I’ve spent 42 years playing with circles. They symbolize unification and completeness.” He quotes the Hindu adage, that “What goes around comes around.” What you give is what you receive, he says. Guilloume works in a variety of mediums, from oils and ink to bronze and steel. An arresting characteristic of his human figures is that they have no facial features. “I like to emphasize what we have in common, not our differences. We are unique, yet we have so much in common. We should embrace those similarities.” Festival-goers can enjoy Guilloume’s work, along with original art from over 200 other talented regional, national and international artists, in a variety of mediums and styles, says Jenny Carattini-Wright, executive director of The Woodlands Arts Council, which organizes the annual event. There is something for everyone at the Waterway Arts Festival, says Jenny.

The theme of this year’s festival is abundance, explains Jenny, an appreciation for all The Woodlands has to offer its residents in the way of art. She says the inspiration for the theme is Guilloume’s featured piece, “Celebrating Abundance.” Guilloume says the piece is meant to express that “We can all celebrate what we have in common, our abundance and our abiding prosperity.” The process of choosing the festival’s featured artist is intensely competitive, says Jenny. It starts in the fall, many months before the festival takes place. Artists are invited to apply, and a panel of judges consisting of gallery owners, art teachers and business professionals review the art and interview the artists, resulting in a “best-of-show” group of finalists. From this group, the featured artist for the festival is chosen. Each year, the featured artist donates a piece of art to be auctioned off at the annual Art Dash Party, which will take place this April 8th at 6 p.m. at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel & Convention Center. Guillome’s 2022 winner, “Celebrating Abundance,” is a striking 72-by 48-inch oil on aluminum triptych, consisting of three panels. Jenny says that during the judging as everyone viewed Guilloume’s artwork, “We all were all struck by his talent and the beautiful messages his work conveyed.” For Guilloume, the reaction is what makes his work so worthwhile–the ability to make an emotional impact through art is a powerful way to bring people together. “When we notice what we have in life rather than what is missing, we begin feeling gratitude,” says Guilloume. “We should express our unity with each other, and I do that through art.”

roofing compassion with TELGE ROOFING GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

ROY CAMPBELL

From rescuing baby squirrels as the self-proclaimed “squirrel-whisperer” to growing the 5th largest roofing company in the state of Texas, Roy Campbell is a busy man. Not too busy to give back to the community, however. When Roy read Candace Segall’s heartfelt letter requesting a new roof for her mother, Donna Shipley Hughes, “I knew I had to help,” says Roy. Roy and his colleagues launched a contest to give away a free roof. When asked why he’d commit to such a costly undertaking, he says, “We’ve been blessed with over 44,000 satisfied customers. I just feel like I needed to do something to give back because we’ve been given so much.” Telge Roofing put out an open call to applicants to submit a personal letter with photos if they were in need of a new roof but could not afford the cost. Out of more than 300 submissions, Roy and his team selected Donna Shipley Hughes. Donna’s story was compelling. A disabled single mother in her mid-60s on a fixed income, the letter spoke of Donna’s selflessness and desire to always help others in need instead of helping herself. “Honestly, it wasn’t an easy decision,” says Roy. “There are so many people in need. I did award gift cards to some of the other applicants because I felt I needed to do something.”

Giving away a free residential roof isn’t the only thing that Roy has done for the community. Telge Roofing also built a new roof on VFW Post 8905, a building from the 1940s that’s desperately in need of a new roof. He’s kept dozens of people employed, many for decades, and all signs point to Telge Roofing’s continued expansion. Telge Roofing has grown beyond just serving the Cypress area. They offer commercial and residential roofing services in all of the Houston area, Austin and, most recently, south Texas. They have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and have achieved Presidential status from GAF, a designation that’s considered the gold standard in the roofing industry. Beyond Roy’s goal of trying to “roof the world”, he still has plans to give back to the community. When asked about the roof giveaway, Roy remarked, “We’ll continue to do it every year that we’re still able to.” TelgeRoofing.com 281-290-0606 12022 Knigge Cemetery Road Suite C
