What does it mean to be your best self? I asked myself that question while I was busy clattering away on my keyboard writing the stories that fill these pages. For some, it might mean securing that big business deal with a new client. For others, it might mean running a first marathon or taking a family hike without cell phones. Perhaps it’s simply finding the time to chronicle the day’s events in a still, quiet place while sipping your favorite warm drink from a mug. For us, that means a new look and feel to our magazine! We'll be featuring new sections such as our business monthly and city scene where you can easily learn about community and business happenings in our area. The new year seems to spark this sort of reflection and it’s a good thing. If there is any time we can think more lucidly about our days it’s now at the start of a new calendar. January is a time we can organize ourselves, our thoughts and perhaps even our homes. We can decide which dreams we wish to pursue and which to abandon. We can rebalance our bodies and schedules to make room for what is most important to us. Our days may seem to stretch before us like an endless horizon, but ultimately, our time is quite finite. How can we use it best? I hope this month offers you moments to step into your best self, whatever that may look like to you. Happy New Year, Cypress! May it bring you newness and wonderful opportunities!

Find Out What’s Been Happening in CFISD

O UR TOWN | ED U CATION

CFISD STUDENT ATHLETES EARN ACADEMIC STATE HONORS Fifty-nine CFISD athletes in cross country and volleyball earned Academic All-State honors and accolades from the Texas High School Coaches Association. Bridgeland High School senior Elisa Grillo (cross country), Cy-Fair High School senior Madison Hrncir (volleyball) and Cy-Woods High School senior Kaitlyn Keneda (volleyball) garnered elite recognition, the highest possible academic recognition given by the association. The THSCA recognizes students who earn all-state honors while excelling in the following categories: grade-point average, class rank and ACT/SAT scores.

CY-WOODS SENIOR SECURES INTERNATIONAL MARKETING INTERNSHIP Cy-Woods Senior James Darden III earned an internship with Peruvian marketing entrepreneur Aquiles Chulluncuy. The two met at an international leadership academy hosted by Texas A&M University’s Mays Business School. During the event, before an audience, James asked if the businessman would have him as an intern. Chulluncuy agreed and the two have since worked together on business tasks. Darden, who operates his own creative marketing agency, hopes to grow his business and take full advantage of the internship.

SCHOOL POLICE DEPARTMENT HONORED AT BACK THE BADGE LUNCH School police officers and staff were honored during CFISD’s fourth annual Back the Badge luncheon. The event has become a yearly tradition between the district’s police and transportation departments to keep open lines of communication between officers and district staff. The district’s facilities and construction, operations, nutrition services and general administration departments also participated. Officers enjoyed a barbecue lunch catered by Andy’s Kitchen as well as prizes and gifts donated by local businesses.

BRIDGELAND STUDENTS AND VLK ARCHITECTS CLINCH TOP AWARDS AT CANSTRUCTION EVENT Bridgeland High School students along with their mentors from VLK Architects received top awards at the 25th Annual CANstruction Houston Competition and Exhibition. The team received the People’s Choice, Most Cans, and Best Meal awards. The CANstruction event pairs architecture, engineering, and construction professionals with students on a design project using canned goods. All proceeds are donated to the Houston Area Food Bank. “Good Night Hunger” was the Bridgeland team’s structure which featured more than 6,900 taco-inspired canned food items. The items were creatively arranged to recreate the story behind Vincent Van Gogh’s painting, Starry Night.

BRIDGELAND HIGH VOLLEYBALL TEAM ENDS SEASON AS STATE SEMIFINALIST The Bridgeland High School volleyball team finished its 2021 season as a state semifinalist after falling to San Antonio Brandeis in the UIL Class 6A state semifinal in November. Bridgeland was narrowly defeated by San Antonio Brandeis in four sets. The Bears finished the season with a 39-12 overall record. The 2021 season marked Bridgeland’s first trip to the state tournament.

BRIDGELAND HS FOOTBALL CLOSES SEASON AS REGIONAL FINALIST Bridgeland High School’s football team closed the season with an 11-3 record and an advance to the regional final for the first time in program history. The team faced off against Tomball High School for the Class 6A Division II playoff bracket, but were defeated in December. The Bridgeland team played its first varsity season in 2018 and has advanced to the playoffs the last three seasons, including 2020’s appearance in the Region II semifinals.

Healing the Body From The Inside

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S

WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL WELLNESS? The body is innately designed to be in balance and heal itself. When this balance is disrupted, it experiences illness and “dis-ease.” If you give the body what it needs, it knows how to heal itself. Functional wellness involves uncovering and releasing the root cause while supporting all aspects of the individual to allow the body to function optimally and thrive. Each person is unique and so are the factors making up their health. By addressing the unique combination of factors impacting the person, we can address the underlying issue and eliminate it from the root for good.

WHAT CAN SOMEONE EXPECT WHEN WORKING WITH YOU? To transform their health and consequently their life! It truly is a transformational process. My clients are actively involved in their personalized care and can expect to be fully heard and supported as we work together toward their goals. They are empowered and receive the tools they need to have the health, body, and life they desire. They also gain clarity and breakthroughs on health issues they may be experiencing. I work with my clients online via video calls, so my clients can have their sessions in the comfort of their own space as well save on travel time. This also allows me to support clients all over the country as well as overseas.

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SEEING A FUNCTIONAL WELLNESS PROVIDER AND A MEDICAL DOCTOR? Due to the way the conventional healthcare system is set up, it is symptom-driven which has an important place, particularly in acute issues or surgeries. Unfortunately, a lot of health issues are chronic issues of lifestyle and require a different approach. The functional wellness approach is client-centered, taking into account the mind, body, and spirit. I focus on educating and empowering clients on choices to best support their bodies and proactively shift their health balance from the root. As a result, their body releases the symptoms and they move towards optimal wellness and improved well-being.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PROFESSION? Supporting people to improve their bodies has always been my passion. I worked as a physical therapist locally and in the UK. After suffering with my own health issues, I was given nothing but pills for solutions. That’s when I decided things had to change. As I learned to heal my body and experienced profound change, I realized I had to share this with others. I really see that as women, we often don’t prioritize ourselves enough, and that’s why I want to empower women to take on this transformational journey, just like I did.

HOW DOES SOMEONE KNOW THEY NEED TO SEE A FUNCTIONAL WELLNESS PROVIDER?

WHAT’S YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR LIVING A HEALTHY 2022?

A lot of people have already tried conventional healthcare options and are not seeing the benefits they want. They are tired of the Band-Aid solutions they’ve been given and want a whole-body approach that really gets to the root cause of their problems. Someone may be concerned about their genetic risks and want to be proactive. Others may not necessarily have any health conditions per se, but may have signs that their body is out of balance. They may be exhausted frequently and just not feel great. Taking action on these warnings from your body early on allows the body to be supported back into balance and can save further deterioration of health.

Improve the condition of your gut and address the root cause of your health problems! Your gut is called your second brain for a reason. It has a huge influence over your whole body, including your brain. Everything impacts your gut, from your body’s toxic burden to the foods you eat. But there’s so much you can do to drastically improve your health. Remember, if you’re not addressing the root cause, your problem will continue to sprout new symptoms, just like when a weed is not removed from the root. If you’re not happy with your health, take action and address the root cause. SharnieGrewal.com (713) 554-0718

NEW YORK YANKEES PITCHER HAYDEN WESNESKI SHARES HIS LOVE OF THE GAME AND COMMUNITY

22

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

IT’S A WHOLE NEW BALLGAME FOR HOMETOWN PITCHER

Hayden Wesneski didn’t set out to be a professional baseball player, and he certainly didn’t think he’d end up signing with the Yankees. In fact, it wasn’t until he was an older student that he realized he had something that might just be intriguing to pitching scouts. Longtime resident of the Cypress area, Hayden started playing tee-ball when he was in preschool. His talent for the game continued to blossom as he played ball for the Arnold Middle School Buccaneers and the Cy-Fair High School Bobcats. By the time he reached college age, he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 33rd round of the 2016 MLB June Amateur Draft, but seemingly wise beyond his years, Hayden just didn’t feel ready for the Majors. Grateful to the Rays but firm in his convictions that he wasn’t ready, he declined the offer and went on to throw for the Sam Houston State Bearkats. Three years later, things continued to get more interesting. In 2019, he was drafted by the Yankees in the 6th round, and he decided to take his pitching to the next level. With the support of his parents and his brother Cole Wesneski, a successful

22-year-old college pitcher in his own right, Hayden is now busy gaining pitching experience–and life experience–with the Yankees Triple-A team. Hayden credits beloved former Houston Astros pitcher Charlie Morton for his pitching style that Hayden adopted during a period of struggle. Hayden seems to have a pragmatic attitude when it comes to struggling, though, which is yet another sign that he’s the right person for the job. “One of the reasons I love baseball so much is that it teaches you how to handle failure,” says Hayden on the greater life lessons that baseball can teach anyone. “In baseball, as in life, you will have struggles, and you have to stay positive and learn to cope with failure as things may not always go your way. That’s just the way life is sometimes, so you just have to get out there and do the best you can.” With a love of baseball and the relationships you form from playing, Hayden encourages young kids to play if they’re interested. He believes baseball has the power to teach other life lessons as well, such as how to stick to a routine and how to build relationships with different types of people with different personalities. 23

“It’s another thing I love about playing,” says Hayden. “I have met so many great people that I never would have met if I wasn’t on a team.” One thing is for certain with Hayden: He’ll continue to harness his positive attitude, determination and grit to succeed at the next level. “Once you get on the mound, you just have to get after it,” says Hayden. “I’ve learned more about how to handle success and I’m going to continue to work hard, stay positive, and build good relationships in the game.”

food portion sizes made simple ARTICLE BY AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PROVIDED

Bite-size eating guidance from the American Heart Association

26

EAT R IGH T | FOOD + BEVE RAGE

serving sizes

Do you know how much you’re really eating? Sometimes it’s hard to tell if the portions we consume are the right serving size for our nutritional needs. Portion sizes have increased drastically over the years, contributing to a rising obesity rate. Sometimes portion size and serving size are the same, but sometimes they are not. Over the past few years, portions have grown significantly in restaurants, as has the frequency of Americans eating out. Consider this statistic from the American Heart Association and the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation study “A Nation at Risk: Obesity in the United States”: Adults today consume an average of 300 more calories per day than they did in 1985.

UNDERSTANDING HEALTHY PORTIONS CAN BE HARD. HERE’S WHY: • Many of us don’t know what a healthy portion is. • Restaurants offer extras like breads, chips and other appetizers that add extra calories, sodium and fat but lack any nutritional benefit. • Some meals have portions that are enough for two or more people. • Many convenience foods and drinks are priced lower but packaged in larger sizes to sell more. Understanding the difference between a portion and a serving makes it easier to determine how much to serve during a meal. According to the National Institutes of Health: • Portion is how much food you choose to eat at one time, whether in a restaurant, from a package or in your own kitchen. A portion is 100 percent under our control. Many foods that come as a single portion actually contain multiple servings. • Serving Size is the amount of food listed on a product’s Nutrition Facts label. All the nutritional values you see on the label are for the serving size the manufacturer suggests on the package – not necessarily for the portion you are consuming.

HOW CAN WE EAT AND SERVE SMALLER PORTIONS? 1. When cooking at home: Offer the proper “serving” to each member of the family, then put the extra food away. Save leftovers for another meal. 2. When dining out: Skip the appetizers and split a large salad or main dish with a friend. 3. When ordering takeout at home: Eat one slice of pizza instead of two and order a small instead of a medium to split among the family so the pieces are smaller. 4. Watching movies at home or at the theatre: Don’t eat while watching TV or a movie or when you’re on the computer. It’s harder to control how much you’re eating if you don’t pay attention to what you’re putting in your mouth, and when. Share a box of popcorn, avoid free-refill tubs and skip the candy. 5. At snack time: Never eat straight from the bag or box. Measure out snacks, including fruits and veggies, into appropriate portion sizes before consuming. 6. All the time: Using a food diary or food tracking app can help you pay closer attention to what you’re eating, how much and how often, especially if you dine out frequently. It helps to know what the appropriate serving size is so you can correctly estimate the calories in your portions.

YOU MAY BE SURPRISED TO LEARN THESE ARE SERVING SIZES: • • • • • • • •

1 slice of bread ½ cup rice or pasta (cooked) 1 small piece of fruit (super-large apples are 2+ servings) 1 wedge of melon ¾ cup fruit juice 1 cup milk or yogurt 2 oz. cheese (about the size of a domino) 2-3 oz. meat, poultry or fish (this is about the size of a deck of cards)

Get Organized and Energize Your Space Professional organizer Reagan Phillips on how to Cure the Chaos in your home ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERICA HERNANDEZ Years ago, when Reagan Phillips’s grandmother was losing her eyesight, Reagan decided to help organize her tiny apartment which was littered with old coffee cups, outdated clothes and stacks of paperwork. The task seemed straightforward: tidy up grandma’s home so she could be safe and not trip over anything, but little did Reagan know it would set her on a path to finding her life’s work. That day she cleaned out her grandmother’s apartment, Reagan and her sister, Fara, removed seven giant trash bags of household clutter. Some of it was donated to charity, but a lot landed straight in the garbage. After that, when Reagan and her sister walked

back into their grandmother’s apartment, the place had a completely different energy. Things were clear, refreshing and hopeful. “I was so relieved and not worried about her tripping and falling anymore,” Reagan says. “It was at that moment, when everything was done, that I loved the way I too felt. I felt so much joy being able to give her this new energy in her home.” Reagan realized she could do this same process for other people. Soon she was clearing out people’s pantries, cluttered closets and helping them organize the belongings in their homes. After every project the result was the same: people loved the feeling of having a neat and organized home. CONTINUED >

Within months, Reagan launched her professional organizing service called Cure the Chaos. Since 2004, she’s helped hundreds of people get clarity in their space, clear their clutter and live more organized lives. She expanded her work to homes across the country and now has a team of professional organizers to help. She created her own proven system called The CURE Method to help busy people organize their space and published a book about it that was ranked a #1 New Released on Amazon. Finally, this month—in honor of National Get Organized Month—she launched an online course to teach others how to clear their clutter and stay organized. “My goal is to help as many people as I can to cure the chaos in their homes by getting organized,” she says. “Ultimately, I hope the organization skills they learn can then transform other parts of their lives.” Reagan’s clients come to her from all walks of life and circumstances. Some have recently downsized and need to get rid of old belongings. Others are new parents overwhelmed with excess baby products and toys. Some simply need help locating their favorite spices in their pantry and call in Reagan to create a system. No matter their situation, Reagan approaches each case with empathy and a plan. She is a keen listener, an unwavering optimist and staunch advocate for letting go of belongings that don’t have a purpose in your life. In her view, a cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind that keeps us from living our best possible lives. To fix that, she patiently takes each of her clients through her CURE Method process to help them get organized in a way that works for them. “Organization is not perfection,” she says. “Having an organized home is not about being perfect and spotless. It is about having a place for everything so you have less chaos and have more time for life.” Taming the clutter in your home starts with creating a vision. Oftentimes, she

“The goal is to teach people how to organize themselves no matter what stage of life they are in. Once they commit to the process, they can conquer any space in their home.” encourages her clients to get inspired with images from Pinterest and decide ultimately what they want their space to look and feel like. Next, Reagan guides clients through her four-step system. First, they clear the clutter and remove everything from the space. Next, they categorize how they use each of their belongings. Many things simply need to be donated or thrown away, and Reagan sits with her clients and helps them decide. Next, she’ll find the right receptacle—such as a bin, basket or cart—to hold the things a client wants to keep and continue using. Finally, once everything is newly organized, Reagan leaves them with solid advice to help them maintain their new space. “The goal is to teach people how to organize themselves no matter what stage of life they are in,” she says. “Once they commit to the process, they can conquer any space in their home.” info@curethechaos.com or CureTheChaos.com

TRUE HEALTH FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY INVICTUS CHIROPRACTIC’S DR. JORDAN CARROLL PUTS FAMILY HEALTH FIRST

At Invictus Chiropractic, Dr. Jordan Carroll and his team work with empathy and compassion to help others restore their health using scientific techniques that are both gentle and effective. While many might envision working with a chiropractor as a series of back-cracking experiences, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. “Our goal is to change how the nervous system adapts,” Dr. Jordan says. Bringing the body back into neurological balance is what drives Dr. Jordan, who’s owned and operated Invictus Chiropractic since 2017. The human body is a highly-sophisticated network of nerves, muscles and messages, a delicate universe meant to exist

in perfect balance. A body in balance can move fluidly between two modes—fight-or-flight mode and rest-and-digest mode. But when any part of those networks get out of order, illness and pain are not far away. “Health is definitely your greatest asset,” Dr. Jordan says. “Either take care of your wellness now or your sickness later.” Dr. Jordan’s work centers on the idea that the body can heal itself from the inside out. Rather than using medicines to address pain, he helps clients address the root of their ailment, from digestive issues to muscle pain. Using a special method called the Torque Release Technique and a T-shaped tool called The Integrator, Dr. Jordan can send tiny impulses to activate nerves with laser precision. He also uses a special technique called the Webster Technique to safely treat pregnant women and help them prepare for birth.

FAMILY-CENTERED CHIROPRACTIC CARE Unlike other chiropractors, Invictus Chiropractic serves the entire family from newborns to older adults. Dr. Jordan can help newborns who’ve suffered a traumatic birth or work with mothers struggling with back pain. Some clients even bring the entire family for treatment at the same time. “We’re always happy when we are there and when we leave,” says Brittany Tesson who takes her entire family of five for treatment. “We’re doing something good to take care of ourselves.” Each of Brittany’s children—who are 8, 5, and 3 years old—have seen Dr. Jordan for everything from digestive problems to anxiety and attention hyper deficit disorder. Brittany’s seen better health in all of her children after visiting Dr. Jordan. They are able to control their impulses better and her youngest has fewer digestive problems. Brittany and her husband also see Dr. Jordan for aches and pains. Since then, they’ve noticed a significant improvement in their own health. They recover from sickness quicker and have less stress. “Family life has improved over all,” Brittany says. CONTINUED >

A PASSION FOR HEALTHY HEALING Helping people feel better has long been a passion for Dr. Jordan. In college, he worked with Division I athletes as an athletic trainer and learned firsthand how chiropractic treatment can restore a person’s health. When he decided to pursue chiropractic training, he initially chose an athletic route, but changed course after he saw a classmate’s life-changing experience. The classmate and his wife had struggled to get pregnant and tried chiropractic care as a last-ditch effort. Within months the couple conceived. After learning their story, Dr. Jordan dedicated his studies and eventually his practice to caring for families. He graduated from Logan University in St. Louis, Mo. with both his bachelor’s degree and doctor of chiropractic. He is also a certified member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. MAKING FAMILY HEALTH A PRIORITY With such a focus on families, it’s no surprise that Dr. Jordan’s own family is a part of his practice. His wife, Caitlin, helps run Invictus Chiropractic’s office and their 10-month-old son, Deacon, gets regular adjustments from dad. Setting family traditions and staying healthy are top priorities for Dr. Jordan. He enjoys staying physically active with his family which also includes two Australian Shepherds, Charlie and Bravo. On weekends or holidays, the whole family—pups included—often go traveling or hiking. Recently, during one family vacation, Dr. Jordan and his wife trekked 12 miles on a whim with their baby in tow. For parents looking to live their healthiest this year, Dr. Jordan recommends focusing on your own mental, emotional and physical health first. That means setting family traditions, spending time together and caring for our bodies. “I know it sounds selfish, but focus on yourself,” he says. “Families, especially moms and dads, always put their kids first..but kids are not going to be healthy unless their parents are healthy.” InvictusCypress.com 11510 Barker Cypress Road #125 Cypress, Texas 832.900.9922
