The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is upon us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. While we enjoy decorating our homes for the holidays and visiting with friends and family, remember there are many families in our community who are homeless. Local charity Cy-Fair Helping Hands makes sure these families have wonderful meals and the children have gifts to make their season bright. You’ll read about the all-volunteer organization efforts to help families get back on their feet as well as what you can do to help. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and some recipes to make your dinner with family and friends special. You’ll also find a fun way to flex your creative bone using a recipe from times gone by. And if the holidays get you stressed out, you’ll find expert ways to cope. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love. Happy Holidays!

1-14: After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, local restauranteurs, business owners, and residents came together once again at A Taste of Cy-Fair to benefit local families in need. All proceeds are donated to Cy-Hope, which helps CFISD children through its Backpack Program in partnership with the Houston Food Bank, counseling and speech therapy, camp and other learning opportunities and experiences for underprivileged youth, and “Hope Centers” where kids can come for homework help, life skills classes, crafts, recreation and other special events. C R A NB E R R Y B R IE B I T E S INGREDIENTS • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry • Nonstick cooking spray • 4 oz. brie cheese • 1/2 c. cranberry sauce, homemade or canned • 3 tbsp. raw shelled pistachios, chopped • Flaky sea salt and ground black pepper, optional

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. 2. Thaw puff pastry according to package directions. 3. Spray 24-well mini muffin pan with nonstick cooking spray. 4. Place the brie in the freezer for 20 minutes to firm. 5. On a well floured surface, roll the sheet of puff pastry into rectangle. Cut the pastry into 4 strips, lengthwise. Then, cut crosswise into 6 strips, creating 24 squares. Press the pastry squares into muffin pan, letting the excess stick up over the edges. 6. Cut the firm brie into (½-inch) slices. Placing one in each pastry square. Top with cranberry sauce and pistachios. 7. Bake for 15 minutes, until puff pastry is golden brown and cheese is bubbly.

BACON-WR APPED FILE TS WITH COWBOY BUT TER INGREDIENTS • 5 tbsp. salted butter, softened • 1 tbsp. chopped fresh parsley • 1 tbsp. chopped fresh chives • 1/2 tsp. grated lemon zest, plus 1 teaspoon lemon juice • 1 tsp. dijon mustard • 2 8- to 10-ounce beef filet steaks (about 2 inches thick) • Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste • 2 slices bacon • 1 tbsp. olive oil

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 450˚ 2. Using a fork, mash 4 tablespoons butter with the parsley, chives, lemon zest, lemon juice and mustard in a small bowl. Scoop butter mixture onto sheet of plastic wrap. Wrap and form into a 3-inch log. Refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes. 3. Generously season the steaks on both sides with salt and pepper. Wrap each steak around the edge with a slice of bacon and secure with a toothpick. 4. Heat the olive oil and remaining tablespoon of butter in medium cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. When butter melts, add the steaks to the skillet and sear until golden brown, about 1 minute per side. 5. Transfer the skillet to the oven and cook for 7-10 minutes for medium rare. Let rest 5 minutes before serving. Serve with slices of cowboy butter on top. CONTINUED >

ESPRESSO MARTINI INGREDIENTS • 2 oz. vodka • 1 oz. coffee liquor • 1 oz. espresso (or cold brew coffee concentrate) • 1/2 oz. simple syrup • Coffee beans, for garnish (optional) DIRECTIONS 1. In cocktail shaker, ½ full of ice, combine vodka, coffee liquor, espresso and simple syrup. Shake well, until foam develops on the surface. 2. Pour into a chilled martini glass and top with 1-2 coffee beans to garnish, if desired.

MAPLE BACON BRUSSEL SPROUTS INGREDIENTS • 8 slices thick-cut bacon, chopped • 2 lb. Brussels sprouts • 1 tsp. kosher salt • 1/8 tsp. ground cayenne pepper, plus more to taste • 1/2 c. dried, unsweetened cranberries • 1/4 c. apple juice • 1/4 c. maple syrup DIRECTIONS 1. In a large cast-iron skillet, cook the bacon oven medium-high funtil crispy. Remove from the skillet and let drain on a paper towel. 2. Add Brussels sprouts to the skillet, stirring well to coat with bacon grease. Reduce heat to medium, cook without stirring for 6 minutes, until the sprouts start to caramelize. Stir in salt and red pepper and cook for additional 6 - 8 minutes or until Brussel sprouts are tender. 3. Stir in the cranberries, apple juice, and maple syrup. Cook for 3 minutes, stirring to coat the Brussels sprouts. Add the cooked bacon and serve immediately.

S W E E T P O TAT O C A S S E R O L E INGREDIENTS Filling: • 3 1/2 lb. sweet potatoes • 1 stick butter, melted, plus more to grease the casserole dish • 1/2 c. heavy cream • 1/3 c. light brown sugar • 3 large eggs • 1 1/4 tsp. salt • 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon • 3/4 tsp. smoked paprika • 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper (optional) Topping: • 1/2 c. all-purpose flour • 1/2 c. light brown sugar • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon • 1/4 tsp. salt • 1 c. chopped pecan • 1/4 c. butter, melted • 2 c. mini marshmallows

DIRECTIONS 1. Filling: Preheat the oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with foil. 2. Place the sweet potatoes on the foil, pierce the tops 2-3 times with a fork. Loosely cover with foil. Roast until soft, (50-60 minutes). Uncover and let cool, and then peel. 3. In a large bowl, combine the sweet potatoes, butter, cream, light brown sugar, eggs, salt, cinnamon, smoked paprika and cayenne. Mash to desired texture. 4. Reduce the oven temperature to 375°F. Place the sweet potato filling in a casserole dish, smoothing the top. 5. Topping: In a small bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the pecans and butter and mix until clumpy. Sprinkle 1 cup of marshmallows over the potato filling. Then top with all of the streusel. Bake 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and top with remaining cup of marshmallows. Return to the oven for 10-15 minutes until marshmallows on top are golden brown, and the middle is hot. Recipes Courtesy of ThePioneerWoman.com

Cy-Fair Helping Hands Gives Hope to the Homeless and Hungry

As we enter into the season of giving and preparing amidst the busyness that can come this time of year, we know there are always families in our community who need a little nudge to help them get back on their feet and to offer them hope. Cy-Fair Helping Hands hosted an “Understanding Homelessness in Cy-Fair” luncheon this fall. In attendance were Church leaders from throughout northwest Harris County. Gathering at the Cy-Fair Helping Hands (CFHH) food pantry and outreach center to learn new and often unexpected information about the homeless population in the Cy-Fair area. "Often we think of the homeless as an elderly man on the street corner" stated Randi Lewis, CFHH's Director of Homeless Outreach, "when in fact the elderly make up less than 10% of homeless people in our community." In the Cy-Fair area, the largest percentage of people with no place of their own are families with children. "In CFISD, 1 out of 100 children are registered homeless" stated Lewis. "This just didn't seem possible, so we double-checked with the district and double-checked the math, and with 1,460 students registered as homeless, this is literally just over 1 in every 100 students who are living in cars, in camps, or are doubled up in someone else's home." This number does not include children whose parents do not register them as homeless, due to embarrassment or fear of the state stepping in. "Across the US, the typical family is now two paychecks away from being homeless", stated Janet Ryan, Cy-Fair Helping Hand's Executive Director. "When you consider the circumstances that can be contributing factors, sometimes they are simply life events that can happen to any of us, such as a divorce, or a protracted illness, or an unexpected job loss" shared Ryan."This leaves so many families vulnerable, with little to no knowledge of resources available. At CFHH each and every week we hear from more families in our area who have nowhere to live so are often living in their cars, and who want to change their situation but just don't know how. That's when we step in, helping with what we can and then sharing other resources with the families to help them get back on their feet." Cy-Fair Helping Hands, (CFHH), is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded in 2010 to help the homeless of Cy-Fair become self-sufficient. CFHH, which is run exclusively by volunteers, is helping those in need in the Cy-Fair area in several ways.

COMMUNITY FOOD PANTRY: providing fresh and non-perishable foods, toiletries, household supplies, essential items, and even free health checks for individuals and families struggling to provide for themselves. The most needed donations for the food pantry are peanut butter, jelly, tuna, canned vegetables, and canned fruit. COMMUNITY GARDEN: The community garden greatly helps with supplementing the non-perishable foods, by offering healthy, fresh produce to food pantry clients, distributed through the CFHH Food Pantry. BLESSING BOXES: Thanksgiving Blessing Boxes come with everything to prepare a Thanksgiving meal plus a gift card to get a ham or turkey to registered families. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: CFHH also offers a scholarship program through Lone Star College for students in the workforce or certificate programs. It is geared toward students who need enough education to allow them to secure employment in a time-sensitive manner. They are financial-need-based, with a required GPA of 2.0. Scholarships are awarded based on financial need with funds to be used for Tuition, Fees, and Books. Also, students are encouraged to apply in subsequent semesters. During the holidays CFHH holds several events helping their homeless guests: • Christmas Party: On December 10th, a Christmas party for their clients, both children, and adults, including homeless families CFHH is sheltering in addition to families who are housed but are struggling financially during the holidays. It’s a lot of fun, with food, Santa, gifts, and more. • Blessing Tree: The chronically homeless individuals they serve are currently filling out their wish lists, and are invited to choose an ornament from the Blessings Tree that lists one of these wishes. In addition, wishes will be listed online. • Cards of Hope: A Christmas program through CFISD where every registered homeless student in middle school and high school will be provided with a $50 gift card. This may be the only gift these children receive. CFHH relies on the generosity of the community to allow them to serve not only the homeless but also the hungry. DIY Salt Dough Snowflake Ornaments

Old traditions with modern day trends

Step One Salt dough, or dough art as we refer to it in our family, is a simple yet beautiful way to adorn spaces around the holidays. Making salt dough ornaments is a holiday tradition that we have been doing since I was a kid in the ‘80s, but the process has been around even longer than that! The use of salt dough is as old as dirt, or I guess I should say as old as clay. Even so, salt dough has made a comeback in recent years and for good reason—it only requires three ingredients, and the festive end product will last for years to come. We still pull out the salt dough ornaments I made as a kid and place them on our tree each year. I love that old traditions can live throughout the decades as we find ways to reinvent them with current-day trends. That is exactly what I did here with these lovely Snowflake Salt Dough Ornaments. I hope you follow along to make some yourself this holiday season.

Salt Dough Recipe

Step Two To make ornaments, use a rolling pin to roll dough to ½ to ¼ inch thick.

Step Three Use a cookie cutter to create snowflake shapes. Use a straw to poke a hole at the top of each snowflake to allow a space to thread your twine after baking.

*Makes about 12 ornament

Supplies Needed 1. Rolling Pin 2. Cookie Cutters (optional) 3. Plastic or Metal Straw 4. Cookie Sheet

Mix together flour and salt. Add ¼ cup water and paint (if you want a white dough, otherwise you may leave it out). Stir to mix. If needed, slowly add more water until you reach a pizza dough consistency. Finally, remove dough from the bowl and knead on a floured surface until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Add more flour if too sticky, add more water if too dry.

Ingredients 1. 1 cup All Purpose White Flour 2. ½ cup Table Salt 3. ½ cup Water (give or take) 4. 4oz White Acrylic Paint

Step Four Place ornaments on parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 hours until dry. Flip ornaments every 30 minutes for a faster bake.

Step Five Once cooled, add decorative touches with lettered stamps, acrylic paint or Sharpie markers. Finally, spray one side of the ornament with an acrylic seal. Let dry, flip and spray the other side.

Step Six Once dried completely, thread twine through the hole created before baking. Hang from your tree or add to your gift boxes as gift tags.

CY-RANCH SENIOR NAMED UNDER ARMOUR ALL AMERICAN Cypress Ranch High School senior and defensive lineman Ashton Porter was nationally recognized as a 2023 Under Armour All-American. According to 247Sports.com’s composite recruiting rankings, the 6-foot-3, 255-pound Porter is currently the 56th-best prospect in Texas for the Class of 2023 and among the top 50 defensive lineman in the nation. Mustangs Head Football Coach Sean McAuliffe says “He is special and has a chance to really do some things down the road at the highest level.”

LANGHAM CREEK SENIOR EARNS STUDENT HEROES AWARD FOR ACT OF KINDNESS Langham Creek High School senior Nitya Kodali was recognized by the State Board of Education for the 2022 Student Heroes Award for voluntarily performing acts of kindness and displaying compassion. Kodali founded the non-profit organization, Letters & Love, after realizing there was a need in the community for outreach to healthcare workers. 2. MAKE A GAME PLAN Plan your arrival time and departure time. Plan how many drinks you will have. Plan a few easygoing topics to discuss if things feel tense. Having no plan can be a recipe for disaster.

3. CHOOSE A TRIGGER WORD Anticipate feeling triggered and be proactive. Choose a word with your spouse or trusted family member that will signal when you need to go outside for some fresh air and to regroup. This word can also signal that it’s time to start planning your exit and end to the night.

4. MANAGE YOUR EXPECTATIONS The same in-law who irritated you last year will be sure to do it again. Don’t expect a Christmas miracle. Remember that the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. Recognizing this will help you plan how to deal with your irritation so that it doesn’t consume you. Remember that your power lies in what you can control, and allyou can control is how you respond to people and situations that get on your nerves.

5. STAY AWAY FROM GOSSIP AND DIFFICULT TOPICS Be it religion and politics, or your cousin’s new tattoo, when it comes tocontroversial topics, you’re better off to stay neutral. Keeping it light can prevent an uncomfortable, unnecessary conflict or fight.

6. COUNT YOUR DRINKS OR DON’T DRINK AT ALL

Time with family or in-laws can be difficult anytime of year, but the holidays bring a certain kind of stress that must be managed so we don’t implode from anything other than too much turkey. We all have that one family member that wears on our last nerve. That person can make an otherwise enjoyable festive dinner excruciating. Here are my top tips to survive difficult family festivities.

1. DISCONNECT YOUR BUTTONS Anticipate being triggered by a comment or someone’s behavior. Someone might push your buttons, but you can disconnect them. Their behavior is about them, and your response is about you. Stay calm and avoid an unfavorable emotional reaction that you may regret later.

Consuming too many candy-cane martinis can throw all good intentions out the window. Alcohol makes it much more difficult to manage emotions and to control responses. If you want to ensure that you’re on top of your game, be proactive inchoosing whether to, or how much to drink.

7. PRACTICE GRATITUDE If you get to spend time with family or have family to spend time with, count yourself blessed. Many people find themselves alone throughout the holidays. Sometimes practicing gratitude will help you be tolerant enough to look for the good in family members and forget the rest, even if just for a night. Wishing you a safe and stress-managed holiday season!

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
