LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter from the Editor

October 2022 PUBLISHER

Peggy Garner | peggy.garner@citylifestyle.com MANAGING EDITOR

Happy Fall, y’all! With the changing seasons comes a change in the food we crave, and with fall that often means comfort food. October is our most delectable issue of the year, filled with some of our favorite dishes available in Cypress. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Miguel Nunez, owner of Juanita’s Mexican Restaurant, and learned about what good food and family mean to him, carrying on the legacy of his grandmother, Juanita. Also, you won’t want to miss the decadent food offerings in our Food Truck Round-up and getting to know the fascinating people who own and run them–so inspiring! As a native Texan, growing up abroad afforded me the wonderful experience of trying new and exciting foods from around the world. To this day, occasionally, I’ll find myself reminiscing about the fried camembert with redcurrant sauce at one of the restaurants my family frequented when we lived in Scotland. Living there was filled with exploring not only new and fascinating places–and people– but new foods too. Three things I definitely still have a love for today. In recent years, I’ve loved trying and perfecting some of the dishes I grew up eating. If I’m completely honest, this has only been made possible because over the last fifteen years my husband has gently and lovingly, yet expertly, taught me how to cook! He and my three middle-school-aged sons are now reaping all the benefits as I’ve enjoyed recreating some of my childhood favorites. From baba ganoush, hummus, and falafel to fettuccine alfredo, and my spaghetti sauce is always a hit (the secret is in the long, slow simmer and fresh-grown herbs). Of course, any kind of homemade bread is always a winner, too. Fresh baked-from-scratch biscuits (with gravy, of course), to hot-off-the-griddle tortillas, Yorkshire pudding, and naan bread! Once you eat something from scratch it feels impossible to go back to the frozen or store-bought version. Creating and sharing these meals and memories with my boys has been so fun, fulfilling, and rewarding. I love how certain foods can bring us right back to our childhood kitchen table. On a personal note, I'm thrilled to have joined the team here at Cypress Lifestyle Magazine as the new Managing Editor. As a Cypress resident with a love for all-things-local, combined with a lifelong passion for reading, writing and research, I’m excited to fill this role! Cheers!

“Whether it’s waiting tables, or behind the bar making drinks, being a dishwasher, a hostess, or helping with to-go orders and even in the kitchen, cooking, like our father, we are always hands-on.” — Miguel Nunez No matter how long you’ve been in Texas, you most certainly know choosing a Mexican eatery is taken very seriously around here. Indisputably a staple in southeast Texas–everyone has their favorite dish. But what really makes a Mexican restaurant set apart from the rest? Juanita’s is more than just a favorite local lunch spot and gathering place to devour delicious food with family and friends—although it’s definitely that too! Since opening a second location in May 2021, Juanita’s continues its legacy of using fresh, quality ingredients in their tasty dishes made lovingly from scratch every day. This attention to detail is why the restaurants are a favorite in the Cypress area and wellloved by their loyal customers after 13 years. Family-owned and operated, Juanita’s is run by the son, and grandchildren of the restaurant’s namesake, Angel Nunez, his son Miguel and daughter Bianca. You’ll find all three working in one of the restaurants along with their staff. When speaking with the Nunez family, it is immediately evident how much pride they take in the restaurants, quality dishes and in serving the community. “Whether it’s waiting tables, or behind the bar making drinks, being a dishwasher, a hostess, or helping with to-go orders and even in the kitchen, cooking, like our father,” Miguel says, “we are always hands-on.” When Angel opened his first restaurant location, he gathered his family’s recipes that had been lovingly developed by his mother in Guanajuato, Mexico. Juanita’s recipes are still the focus of the menu today.

Each dish served at Juanita’s shows a genuine passion for appetizing dishes, made fresh every single day, always with quality ingredients. “Our most popular dish has to be the Birria Tacos,” Miguel says. The dish features marinated and braised short rib, served in quesa-tacos with melted cheese and a guajilo chile dipping sauce that one might sip from a straw with little encouragement. Juanita’s cocktails, like their food, are always made with quality ingredients, including their delicious, hand-shaken margaritas. Billed as the strongest in Cypress, all margaritas are made fresh in-house and never with a puree. Enjoy one of their house margaritas during Happy Hour at the Juanita’s Cypress location all-day Mondays, and Tuesday-Friday from 11 am-6 pm. If weekend brunch is what you need in your life, Juanita’s has something for everyone. The brunch menu features a decadent array of dishes, such as dulce de leche stuffed churros, fried avocado stuffed with chicken or beef, and a fajita omelet, as well as staples like huevos rancheros and chilaquiles. Try these dishes or choose from many more classic menu items, all offering a unique experience for your taste buds. And don’t forget to order a flight of mimosas. PA N T R Y PA R A D I S E WITH CLOSET CONCEPTS HTX

Closet Concepts HTX creates stylish food storage spaces with everyday function 26

D E C OR T R E N D S | HOM E + DE S I GN

When Closet Concepts HTX designer Neelam Dhukani first settled into her new townhome, she was dazzled by the size of her pantry. It was a spacious room with shelving wrapped around three walls. But with basic, builder-grade shelving, her groceries and kitchen appliances just wouldn’t sit quite right–or at least, she knew the organization could be much better. That’s when Neelam delved deep into her design background and created a vision for a custom pantry that would be both aesthetically pleasing and supremely functional. “With the kitchen counter space being limited, I knew I needed to maximize the [pantry] storage as best as possible,” Neelam says. The result? A Pinterest-worthy pantry outfitted with a stylish bar, eye-catching wine storage and spacious, sleek shelving for all her nifty kitchen gadgets. After Neelam’s pantry makeover, the space is now well-equipped to handle her groceries, household supplies as well as her favorite wines and drinks. Her vision was brought to life by Closet Concepts HTX, a design and renovation company that helps people make the best use of the space in their homes with custom storage and organization systems.

Contrary to its name, Closet Concepts HTX is about more than just closets. The company creates and installs organization systems for every room in the home. Their work includes custom cabinetry, built-in structures and entertainment centers. They’ve created slat wall vertical storage in a garage and helped homeowners convert empty spaces into home offices. They’ve renovated laundry rooms and equipped a mudroom with cubbies, coat hooks and adjustable shelving. Each project is made to order, exactly as each customer desires. “The end goal is to fit the client’s needs, and for every client it’s different,” says Ricky Patel, who co-owns Closet Concepts HTX along with business partner Hilary Pavia. “It’s really about understanding their lifestyle, how they live and incorporating what we do to give them a better setup.” The company, founded in 2019, takes a detailed approach to solving homeowners’ storage and organization woes. Clients often reach out to Closet Concepts HTX after finding design inspiration online, but not knowing how to bring the idea to life. The company

offers a one-stop shop for design, in-house manufacturing, elegant accents and quality installation for every project. The remodeling process starts with a design consultation so the team can get a sense of your daily needs. With a new pantry design, for instance, some people may want shelving measurements cut specifically for their favorite storage containers, while others might opt for creating a spacious kids’ snack station. After the design is complete, you’ll get a chance to review the plans and make changes. Next, you’ll select the material colors and styles you’d like to use for your project. Closet Concepts HTX offers highend features such as embedded lighting in the shelves, glass cabinets, granite countertops and decorative hardware to make each project more visually appealing. Next, the main project pieces will be custom-built in-house at the company’s Houston workshop. Finally, the company handles installation by booking a crew to work around your schedule.

When it comes to designing your first pantry, Ricky suggests homeowners keep in mind how the space is used on a day-today basis. They should also continually think about their end goal for renovating their space. Is it to have more space for baking goods, better ways to store kitchen appliances or is it to create a stylish ambiance in the kitchen? Whatever the goal, Ricky suggests keeping functionality at the forefront of the design process and letting Closet Concepts HTX help them through from start to finish. “We like to make it a one-stop shop for clients by providing all of the services needed to recreate their spaces,” Ricky says. “We are turnkey!” ClosetConceptsHTX.com 3410 Yale Street, Houston, Texas 832.203.8161

Heffernan BBQ has been in the Cypress area for over a decade. Run by a mother-and-son duo, Jeannie Heffernan and her son Evan, Heffernan BBQ was originally started by Jeannie’s husband, Bob, in 2009. When Bob passed away in 2017, Jeannie and Evan took over. They offer traditional BBQ including brisket, ribs, pulled pork and sausage with Bob’s homemade sauce. Jeannie uses her own recipes for the sides and desserts and Evan serves as pitmaster, staying true to Bob’s original concept while adding his own slant. Heffernan’s BBQ is regularly at Bridgeland’s Friday Night Bites and the Rosehill Beer Garden.

Funnelocity doesn’t offer your average funnel cake. Instead, they create gourmet experiences! Established in 2020 by then fourteen-year-old Kayce, she along with her best friends, served her cakes from a tent for a year. Being a business-savvy teen CEO, she leveraged her profits to purchase her first food truck. The menu includes indulgent funnel cake creations with ice cream, cheesecake bites, peach cobbler, brownies, fresh strawberries, and many other decadent toppings over always-hot and always-fresh funnel cakes. The Funnelocity truck can be found at local festivals, private and community events, and even weddings! Check social media for weekly updates on locations.

F RA NK A ND RIC HARD’ S FOOD T RUCK INSTAG R A M @ F R A N K A N D R I C H A R D S _ L LC

Frank and Richard’s Food Truck is owned and operated by Troy Young, who named his Food Truck after his late grandfathers, the father figures and role models in his life. “They always told me to put forth my best, and that’s what I decided to do with this food truck.” Troy says “They taught me to work hard and the importance of taking care of family.” Sadly, both men have passed, but they left a lasting impact on Troy. He’s proudly living out what they taught him, through the flavorful dishes he serves from his food truck. Frank and Richard’s offers creole food with a twist, defining its cuisine as American-Creole, and offering delicious favorites like fried lemon pepper oxtails and birria oxtail tacos. The food truck can be found at local breweries. OCTOB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / CY P R E S S

Stick y Toffee Pudding COOK TIME: 28 to 32 mins SERVINGS: 12 individual cakes SOURCE: Land Of A Thousand Hills Coffee & Bakery

CAKE INGREDIENTS:

SAUCE INGREDIENTS:

• 12 oz pitted dates • 2 cups plus 2 Tbsp water • 1/4 cup chopped semi-sweet chocolate • 1 1/4 tsp baking soda • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour • 1 3/4 tsp baking powder • 7 Tbsp butter, softened • 1 1/4 cup granulated sugar • 3 eggs, room temp • 1 tsp vanilla

• • • • •

3/4 cup packed brown sugar 3 1/2 Tbsp butter, diced 1 cup heavy cream 1 Tbsp dark corn syrup 1/8 tsp rum flavor (optional)

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 325°F. Prepare two bundtlet or jumbo cupcake pans with a baker’s grease release spray; set aside. Place the dates and water in a saucepan over high heat (no need to chop the dates). Bring to a boil, then reduce to medium flame and boil exactly 1 min; remove from the heat. Stir in the chocolate & baking soda. Allow the mixture to stand for 5 minutes, then puree with an immersion blender till smooth. Alternatively, a food processor or blender may be used, but place a damp towel over lid to prevent hot liquid splatters. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour & baking powder; set aside. In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 4 min total. Add the eggs one at a time, beating 20 seconds between each addition. Add the vanilla extract with the last egg. Blend in the flour mixture and then the date puree until well blended. Place 1/2 cup batter into each jumbo muffin cavity. Bake on middle oven rack approximately 28-32 min, rotating at halftime. Check for doneness with an inserted toothpick which should come out dry or with only a few moist crumbs clinging. Cool 20 minutes, then invert onto plastic wrap (otherwise it will stick and be hard to lift up). Plate and drizzle with sticky toffee sauce. Serve warm. *If desired, place all cakes onto a foillined sheet pan; drizzle with sauce and return to oven about 3-5 minutes till warmed.

TOFFEE SAUCE RECIPE: Place the sugar, butter, 1/2 cup heavy cream and dark corn syrup into a medium saucepan over a medium flame. Whisking continually, bring to the boil and then allow to bubble away for 3 full minutes, whisking continually to prevent scorching. Remove pan from flame; whisk in 1/2 cup heavy cream and rum flavor. Optional Toppings: Roasted Coconut and Fresh Strawberry CONTINUED >

Birria Tacos SERVINGS: 8 SOURCE: House of Yum

INGREDIENTS: • • • •

• • • • • • •

7-8 cups hot water 4 lbs chuck roast cut into 4 large chunks 2 lbs short ribs (bone in) or back ribs bone in 1 large white onion dry skins removed, cut in half crosswise 1 garlic bulb cut the narrow top off, no need to peel 1 carrot cut in half crosswise, then cut in half (4 large pieces of carrot) 5 bay leaves dried 8 guajillo chiles stems cut off and seeds removed 3 tbsp chicken boullion 1-2 tsp chili powder 1 tsp mexican oregano 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)

QUESABIRRIA TACOS • 14-16 white corn tortillas • 2 cups quesadilla cheese or any good melting cheese

DIRECTIONS: Combine Ingredients: In large pot add meat, onion, garlic, carrots, bay leaves and dried peppers. Cover with water. (This uses my large 7 qt pot and fills it to the top!) Add Seasonings: Add chicken bouillon, oregano, cumin and salt, stir to combine. Bring to a boil. Skim: After 30 minutes, skim the top of the pot to remove impurities from the bone cooking out. (will look like little bits of foam on the top) Blend Peppers: Remove the peppers (should be softened) and place in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth, add up to 1/4 cup of broth if needed to help get a smooth consistency. Strain: Strain the peppers if needed to remove bits of skin (if using a high-powered blender this step is not necessary). Combine: Add the blended peppers into the broth and stir to combine. Season: Add in the chili powder as desired to get a nice deep red color to the broth. Simmer: Cover and continue to simmer for about 3 hours or until meat is tender and easily shredding on it’s own. (remove lid and give a stir every 40 minutes or so. Can also taste the broth once the meat is cooked through and adjust seasonings as needed). Reserve Grease: Skim the grease from the top of the broth (SAVE THIS!) pour the grease into a small skillet or saucepan, this is used for making the tacos if desired. Remove the onion, garlic, carrots, and bay leaves from the broth. (these ingredients were in the broth for flavoring…people are more than welcome to eat and enjoy them, so save them if you want!) Serving: Remove the meat from the broth and cut into large chunks for serving. Remove any bones.

TO SERVE AS A STEW: Serve a couple pieces of meat into a bowl, spoon broth on top. Top with diced onion and fresh cilantro. Serve with a wedge of lime to squeeze in. TO MAKE QUESABIRRIA TACOS: Chop Meat: Remove the meat from the broth, and finely chop until only small pieces remain. Heat a large skillet/griddle over medium heat. Frying Tortillas: Dip the corn tortilla into the reserved grease from the broth. Place on heated griddle, top with the chopped meat and cheese. Fold the taco over and press down with a spatula. Continue cooking until the taco is crisp and golden on the bottom, about 2-3 minutes. Then flip and continue cooking the other side. (it’s ok if some of the cheese leaks out while frying, the golden cheese is the best part!) Plus you can spoon some additional grease onto the tortilla while it cooks if you need more coloring to the tortilla. • Cook until both sides are crisp. Remove from heat and allow to cool briefly before serving, will be very hot. Continue until all tacos are cooked. Top tacos with fresh cilantro and onion if desired. Serving: Serve with a bowl of the broth topped with onions and cilantro on the side. Dip the tacos into the broth while eating. OCTOB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / CY P R E S S
