OF RESEARCH TO FIGURE OUT THAT EXPRESSING GRATITUDE JUST PLAIN FEELS GOOD. When was the last time you told someone you were thankful for their presence in your life? When was the last time you truly paused to experience all that's gone right lately? Being grateful, expressing thankfulness, can lift our spirits and help us focus attention on the fullness of our lives, rather than the things we lack. Now that’s powerful stuff. For this issue, in the spirit of thankfulness, we’ve brought you profiles of gratitude from

Woman Behind The Wheel Dealership Owner Elizabeth Samuels is a Driving Force in the Family Auto Business When visiting Joe Myers Kia, you aren’t simply looking for your next vehicle. When you step into Elizabeth Samuel’s dealership, a family-run business alongside her husband Ralph, longtime managing partner and general manager, and their three sons, know that you’re visiting an establishment that oozes knowledge with unparalleled service. The dealership is an integral part of the Samuel family. The husband-wife duo frequently visits South Korea, immersing themselves in the Kia production world, understanding the quality and precision of creating the perfect Kia vehicle. Elizabeth and Ralph have even been present in the initial design phase of various models. Where else can you say my dealership owner was part of making this car design? The award winning designs and quality have earned KIA a growing strong loyal customer base. Elizabeth is proud to have recently received the 25 Year Service Award for her dealership. Elizabeth, a Katy High School graduate, cemented her love for the automotive world, “I have always been interested in automobiles. My Dad taught me all about cars, making it very fun, and I absorbed it all, even though I was, “a girl.”” These fond bonding memories soon would turn into paramount success for Elizabeth, “I went to work at Joe Myers in 1985, a 36-year association and a continuing rewarding and unique experience with all of the ongoing challenges facing us all today.”

Over 15 years ago, the Samuels’ son, Greg, created the iconic “Dealbuster” character. The “Dealbuster” became an award – winning advertising campaign and has become a part of the success of the Joe Myers Kia dealership. With award-winning advertising campaigns, employees who feel like family and dedication like no other, it’s clear to see why this dealership has seen continued success despite a pandemic. Employees found themselves with a safe and secure job, working six days a week throughout the pandemic once the automotive industry was deemed essential. “It’s very rewarding to work with and have fun with our team members, the majority, having been with us for many years.” When Elizabeth isn’t helping car dreams come true, you’ll find her absorbed in her community and charitable efforts, involved in the Greg Samuel Everyday Hero Foundation. The foundation is amazing since it was set up to share random acts of kindness with those less fortunate. Since it’s inception, Each winter Elizabeth now oversees a jacket and blanket drive. “I always feel that if you treat people the right way, things will always work out just fine.” A mantra reflecting not only her work ethic but warm, personable manner too, which sees friends and neighbors coming back for their next vehicle! Visit today to get a supreme customer experience, not just your next car.

HAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR THIS YEAR? We asked that

exact question to some of the most dedicated people in our community: first responders. From the emergency room to our kids’ schools, these community servants have experienced incredible circumstances over the last year and yet continue to inspire with their sense of gratitude and purpose. Daily, they choose to put the needs of others’ health and safety above their own, and they help make the lives of those around them just a bit brighter, a bit more hopeful. So next time you see a first responder around town, take a moment to be grateful for their service. Take a pause

“I chose to become a registered nurse because I love to take care of people.”

and think positively or even personally show them your appreciation. Because even the smallest act of gratitude is a powerful deed. WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR PERSONALLY? I am most thankful for God, my family, and my friends. I am thankful for my job and team who have become a second family to me. When you weather the storm together, it bonds you in an indescribable way. I am thankful that I have had the opportunity to help others and continue to grow in my career. I am thankful for all of those along the way that have helped mold me into the person I am today. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO BECOME A NURSE? I chose to become a registered nurse because I love to take care of people. I have always had a giving heart and a soul that remains calm in the storm. Being a nurse allows me to care for others in their darkest moments. I am able to offer support, knowledge, and be a source of comfort, which in return, makes me feel like I am fulfilling my life’s purpose. WHEN YOU THINK OF THE FUTURE, WHAT OR

WHO INSPIRES YOU? My husband inspires me the most. He had the courage to change careers and start over. He is now an officer in the Navy and is currently teaching at the collegiate level. He has been my biggest cheerleader, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. He encouraged me to apply to my master’s program and has been there to lift me up in the challenging times. He has not only made an impact on me, but he is an amazing mentor to his students. I hope that one day I can be a mentor and leave a lasting impression on my students HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SHOW GRATITUDE? I show gratitude by giving gifts. I learned from my parents and life experiences that Heaven only knows what’s going to happen. We must make the most of our time. Say thank you and give compliments. Life can be unpredictable.

DA I L E M CO R ZO WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO BECOME A POLICE OFFICER? When I was twelve years old, I was impacted by a D.A.R.E. school female officer. She left a lasting impression which motivated me to want to serve the community. WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR PERSONALLY? Being blessed with a healthy 8-year-old daughter and my most recent blessing, my 18-month-old baby boy. HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SHOW GRATITUDE? I’m a firm believer that actions speak louder than words. I enjoy noticing things that bring people joy and or happiness. Small actions like giving people coffee, snacks, or mentioning something about their favorite sports team tends to have a positive reaction. Finally,

supporting local businesses is another way I like to show gratitude. WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY WITNESS OR EXPERIENCE PERSONALLY THAT WARMED YOUR HEART? Seeing volunteers help families in need at a recent school supply and food pantry event made me feel good about humanity.

E RIN HOL MES WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO BECOME A PARAMEDIC? I moved to this career from a previous corporate job. I love helping people whether it be medically or sometimes just listening. WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR PERSONALLY? I’m personally thankful for my family and health. I’m also thankful that I can serve my community. WHEN YOU THINK OF THE FUTURE, WHO INSPIRES YOU? My family. They push me to be better all of the time. Living with a first responder can be hard on families. I am grateful that my family completely supports me. WHAT IS YOUR HOPE FOR 2022? I hope for both my work and personal family to con-

INSPIRED BY BEN HIGGINS TALKS COFFEE, HOPE & HUMANITY, AND WHAT IT MEANS TO BE THANKFUL

Living a Purposeful Life

PROBABLY BEST KNOWN FOR BEING LEAD #20 IN THE BACHELOR, THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO BEN HIGGINS THAN BEING ONE OF AMERICA’S REALITY TV SWEETHEARTS, SUCH AS HIS DEEP PASSION FOR MAKING MOVES TO “MULTIPLY GOOD IN THE WORLD.” PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED 30

Since his time on The Bachelor, Ben has taken the opportunity to use his fame to create not one, but two inspiring podcasts, publish a successful autobiography, while also elevating awareness of his “for-purpose” Generous Coffee brand. We sat down with him (virtually) to reflect on all that he has accomplished in this season of “thankfulness.”

BH: The idea came in July of 2017 and we launched in January of 2018. When the show [The Bachelor] happened, our fundraising increased 500%, but we also knew that it probably wasn’t going to last. We asked ourselves how we can make this more sustainable, and we came up with the idea that we could start a for-profit business and call ourselves “for-purpose.” We donate 100% of our profits to non-profits.
