WHO GIVES LIFE TO KIDS CARTOONS? How does a cartoon go from a sketch on a page to a walking, smiling, laughing unforgettable character? That’s exactly the calling of Robert Paul Jr., a longtime children’s book illustrator, character designer and animator. Robert, along with his wife and fellow artist Danaka Gordon, own and operate SteadFast Entertainment. The media company creates illustrations for and about children. Their mission is to impact children with positive messages that add to their childhood experience, Danaka says. “Just adding to that childhood wonder that they have is the end goal,” says Danaka, who also animates for a popular children’s web series. Robert, a professional artist for 12 years, creates art for independent book authors, filmmakers and major toy brands such as Hatchimals. His whimsical, memorable designs can be found in major bookstores and widely-viewed web cartoons. Many of his characters tell a story about children’s everyday adventures. Others are Christian-themed and favored by church teachers. “I do every project like I’m doing it for God,” Robert says. “That’s what keeps me going.” The company does custom illustrations, commissioned portraits and design work. SteadFast is accepting new clients by appointment only. 16517 Longenbaugh Drive, Houston, Texas SteadFast.tv, robertpauljr@steadfast.tv or danaka@steadfast.tv

THERAPY ANIMALS

CHILI 22 YEARS
The animals at Figment Ranch act like they already know you. Llamas greet you lovingly. Alpacas pose calmly as you touch their fluffy coats. A fearless ancient tortoise waddles right up to say hello. It’s as if each of the animals has an uncanny sense about who you are. “These animals—they are so in tune with people and emotions,” says owner Ruby Herron. “It’s hard to explain.” Ruby co-owns the ranch with two others, Robin Turell and Sean Price. Ruby, who has muscular dystrophy, purchased her first llama more than 30 years ago from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. It seemed to sense

her pain, she says, and helped her cope. Over the years, Robin, a longtime special needs teacher, welcomed students to the ranch and watched as they bonded with the llamas. They “have a sixth sense about them,” she says, and can bring out the best in people. Unlike horses or camels, llamas don’t kick, spit or bite. They are calm and can be easily led even by a child in a wheelchair, Robin says. “They can pet them, they can kiss them, they can hold them. ... They can accomplish something,” she says. The ranch is now home to about 70 llamas and alpacas. Most are rescued. Many are old. Some were abused. The owners established a nonprofit to help fund their care. A gift shop stocked with llama-themed products also helps defray costs. 17102 Mueschke Road, Cypress, Texas 713.249.3893, FigmentRanch.com

When residents at Elmcroft Senior Living first see a chocolate-colored poodle trotting around their home, they stop, smile and come alive. Andouille, a trained therapy dog, is new to the job but takes to residents fondly. They pet her, laugh and smile. “She brings me happiness,” says Mary Horner, her owner. “So I figured she could bring other people happiness as well.” Mary and Andouille are part of a group called Therapy Pet Pals of Texas, a volunteer band of pet owners who accompany trained dogs

into assisted living facilities. The dogs offer love and support to people who would otherwise have no contact with pets. “It was solely founded for providing happiness and companionship to a ‘forgotten’ part of today’s society: the elderly,” Mary says. Mary began offering pet therapy 16 years ago with a toy poodle. In that time, she’s seen her dogs help improve people’s behavior and lift their spirits. One of her most cherished memories happened when a stroke patient was able to tell a dog ‘I love you’ in very broken speech. “She had not talked in a long time,” Mary says. “And she was talking to the dog.” Unlike service dogs, therapy dogs don’t need years of specialized training. The must be able to walk on a leash and above all have a calm demeanor. They need current vaccinations and basic obedience skills. Owners must have owned the dog for at least one year and be willing to share the love of their pet with the ill and elderly. TherapyPetPals.org

GIVING BACK
Making Sure No Child Goes Hungry
WEEKEND BACKPACK FOOD PROGRAM ENSURES LOCAL KIDS HAVE ENOUGH TO EAT
ARTICLE ERICA HERNANDEZ PHOTOGRAPHY CONTRIBUTED BY CY-HOPE

Cypress Lifestyle | August 2019
“ONE IN FOUR CHILDREN IN SOUTHEAST TEXAS IS AT RISK FOR HUNGER. THEY DON’T HAVE ENOUGH FOOD.”
HUNDREDS OF AREA STUDENTS RELY ON THEIR SCHOOL CAMPUS FOR REGULAR DAILY MEALS. And for many, when school ends for the week, so does their daily food supply. One local charity, however, is stepping up to fill the need. “One in four children in Southeast Texas is at risk for hunger,” says Jeanne Allain, Backpack Program director with Cy-Hope. “They don’t have enough food.” Jeanne directs the organization’s backpack program, which distributes free food to schoolchildren who otherwise risk going hungry during the weekends or school holidays. The food, mostly nonperishable canned goods and snacks, is provided and packed by the Houston Food Bank. Volunteers then deliver the food in backpacks to school leaders. Students receive enough supplies to make weekend breakfast and lunch for a family of four. Students pick up the backpacks on Friday afternoon and return them empty on Mondays. “We get kids who are so excited to pick up the bags because they know they’re going to have food for the weekend,” Jeanne says. “So it’s one of those little things that makes a big impact.” School leaders report that students who receive the food show improved attendance and behavior, Jeanne says. The program, which launched in 2011, started with just two schools, two volunteers and 80 bags of food. It now covers 69 schools and feeds 1,500 children. Only those who receive a free or reduced-price school lunch are eligible to apply. The program runs from September through May. Cy-Hope’s goal is to enlist all 49 area schools considered Title I, a low-income federal designation. Jeanne says Cypress-area residents might have a misconception that there’s no need for this kind of program in this area. Her program even services students who are considered homeless at some of the most seemingly affluent campuses. “Sometimes you don’t realize the need in your backyard,” Jeanne says. “It’s such an important program in our area because there is a need right here in our own community.” Volunteers and donations are always welcome. The program routinely needs drivers to take the backpacks from Cy-Hope’s property on Telge Road to each campus on Wednesdays. Donations are also helpful to defray the costs of purchasing some 3,000 new backpacks for the coming school year. Cy-Hope.org, 713.466.4673, cy-hope@cy-hope.org August 2019 | Cypress Lifestyle

PHOTOGRAPHY & WOODLANDS RESORT
ALLEY LETO IS A MOM OF THREE WHO KNOWS A THING OR TWO ABOUT TRAVELING WITH KIDS. When planning a family vacation, she considers things like travel time, kid entertainment options and amenities. She found the right balance of all three just 45 minutes away. Her recent family trip to the Woodlands Resort proved to be every bit the vacation she hoped for without the hassle of extended travel. “If you’re just looking for a mini staycation or a little break with your family—even if you wanted to stay longer than just the weekend—it’s just a great option,” she says. The resort offers a peaceful break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Situated on 28,000 acres of lush piney woods, the property boasts a host of watersports, biking and walking trails and two golf courses. The crown jewel of the resort’s kid-centric outdoor entertainment spots is the Forest Oasis Waterpark, a colossal water playground with a 30-foot water tower and 1,005-foot lazy river. The park was a smash hit with Alley and her family, who spent the day lounging poolside. Their looks were styled by Nautica at Houston Premium Outlets. Families can even rent an intimate luxury cabana complete with cable TV, a small fridge and private food service. The nearby Cool Water Cafe offers light meals and summertime cocktails. For those who prefer air-conditioned entertainment, the resort offers indoor pampering at its spa. Schedule a massage, facial or body treatment, or head to the 24-hour fitness center for a workout. The resort even programs a jam-packed daily schedule of summertime activities such as face painting, sand art and s’mores roasting— enough events to fill up your summer scrapbook with tons of memories. “They’re always trying to invest in their kids’ programs and make it the best experience for

WALKING INTO CYPRESS SWEETS CANDY SHOP IS A TREAT IN ITSELF. The brightly lit shop is tidy and colorful. Shelves laden with vibrant taffy liven up an entire wall. A colorful balloon sculpture greets customers at the doorway, and a human-sized gumball machine draws smiles from adults just as much as kids. “The kids are just flabbergasted by the gumball machine,” says Courtney Okanlomo, who owns the shop. “People are just happy.” This month marks the first summer for the family-owned store located on Grant Road. The confectionery carries an abundance of sweets from chocolate-covered gummy bears, cookies and glazed popcorn to nostalgic candies such as licorice pipes. Courtney runs the shop with help from her sister and family members. A realtor by trade, she and her family decided to open the shop because they wanted a side business with low operating costs. They also wanted something fun to do together. “It really comes to all hands on deck when it comes to operating the store,” she says, smiling.
