BUSINESS MORE THAN A DECADE AGO, IT WASN'T A GREAT TIME TO BE IN THE GLASS HOUSE BUSINESS. "Things were kind of slow, honestly," he says. But that was then, before things like organic, farm to table and hydroponic romaine lettuce became en vogue. "People say they're buzzwords, but it's done a lot for my greenhouses," Steve says. Now his business, Southern Greenhouses, has moved way beyond the garden, and Steve is receiving orders for his greenhouses from all over the country. Restaurants in Los Angeles and New York City are looking for culinary-focused glass structures to keep up with the latest trends, and a party in North Carolina wants one for a wedding. "That's probably been my coolest order," he says. He serves the local greenhouse need as well, and anyone who's been to Hermann Park in Houston has probably spotted some of Steve's handiwork. A new restaurant complex downtown is going to feature one of his greenhouses as a bar. "It's going to really be something," he says.
