A Season to Style

Jay Betts, Joelle Brooks

There’s something about September in Alabama. The calendar says fall, but the afternoons still remind us that summer isn’t quite ready to let go. The mornings arrive with just the slightest chill in the air, football weekends are back, and before long we’ll be trading sandals for boots and reaching for our favorite lightweight sweaters. Style has always been about more than what we wear. It’s how we welcome guests into our homes, gather around the table with family, decorate our front porches, support our local businesses, and carry ourselves through each season of life. In Cullman, style has a personality all its own—comfortable, authentic, and undeniably Southern. This month’s issue celebrates that spirit. Inside, you’ll meet local businesses helping shape our community’s style, discover inspiring stories, and find ideas that will carry you into one of Alabama’s favorite seasons. Whether you’re refreshing your wardrobe, updating your home, or simply looking for inspiration, we hope these pages encourage you to shop local and appreciate the people who make our community so special. So pour yourself a cup of coffee, settle into your favorite chair, and enjoy flipping through this month’s issue. Thank you for inviting us into your home each month. It is truly an honor to share the stories of the people, places, and businesses that make Cullman such a wonderful place to call home. Happy September,

When Sara Beth Norrell graduated from Samford University in 2013, she imagined a career in the classroom — not behind the counter of a beloved children’s shoe store. But after eight years of teaching and the birth of her second child, Ruthie, Sara Beth felt God nudging her toward something new. That nudge turned into an unexpected opportunity when Shannon and Chad, the previous owners of If The Shoe Fits, approached her about

purchasing the store. “It was an unexpected opportunity that felt like a perfect fit,” Sara Beth says, “and I’m so grateful for where that conversation led.” Nearly five years later, Sara Beth is approaching a milestone anniversary in business — and reflecting on just how much the journey has taught her. “These past five years have taught me so much,” she says. “One of the biggest lessons has been just how loyal and supportive the Cullman community is. Small businesses truly thrive because of the people who choose to shop local, and I never take that for granted.” For Sara Beth, the relationships built along the way have been the most rewarding part of ownership. Step inside If The Shoe Fits, and you’ll find a store thoughtfully divided into two sides. One side offers a wide selection of women’s shoes along with OluKai footwear for men. The other is dedicated entirely to children — shoes, clothing, and accessories in sizes ranging from newborn all the way through youth large. “What sets us apart is the quality and variety of the products we carry,” Sara Beth explains. “I want everyone who walks through our doors to find something they love, whether they’re shopping for a special occasion or everyday essentials.” With this issue spotlighting kids, Sara Beth lit up talking about dressing little ones. “There’s something so special about children’s clothing,” she says. “Childhood is such a short season, and I love helping families celebrate it.” Some of her favorite moments in the store are the small, meaningful ones — fitting a child for their very first pair of shoes, finding the perfect outfit for a special occasion, or helping an expecting mom build her baby registry. Right now, she’s especially excited about the shop’s newest line, The Beaufort Bonnet

Company, known for timeless, classic styles that pair beautifully with more playful, everyday pieces. But ask Sara Beth what keeps her going, and the answer has little to do with inventory. “What keeps me passionate is the people,” she says. “I love seeing familiar faces, watching children grow over the years, and getting to know the families who support our store.” She’s quick to credit her team — “an amazing team of women who show up every day with servant hearts” — and especially her manager, Emily Klair Brown, whom Sara Beth calls her right hand and one of her closest friends. “If The Shoe Fits simply would not be the same without her.” At the heart of it all, Sara Beth’s mission is simple. “Our goal is to serve others well, build lasting relationships, and honor the Lord through the way we treat people,” she says. It’s a mission Cullman families feel every time they walk through the door — one well-fitted pair of shoes at a time. Timeless by Design Southern Accents blends history, craftsmanship and family into one extraordinary destination. There are stores you visit for inspiration, and then there are places that become part of your story. Southern Accents has been doing just that for generations, welcoming visitors into a world where craftsmanship still matters, history is celebrated, and every salvaged treasure is waiting to begin a new chapter. Located in the heart of downtown Cullman, Southern Accents is much more than an architectural salvage store. It is a destination where homeowners, designers, builders and history lovers come searching for something they simply can’t find anywhere else. Behind every antique door, hand-carved mantel, vintage light fixture and weathered piece of hardware is a story worth preserving—and for Garlan and Heather Gudger, preserving those stories has become life’s work. Although Garlan and Heather have owned and operated Southern Accents since 1999, the company’s roots reach back even further. The business was founded in 1969 by Garlan’s parents, who began collecting and selling architectural treasures from their family garage. Over the decades, what started as a small family operation has grown into one of the nation’s premier architectural salvage businesses while remaining true to its original mission of preserving pieces of history that might otherwise be lost. The story of Southern Accents is also the story of the Gudger family.

Garlan and Heather first met when he was working at Southern Accents and Heather walked through the doors, they later married, and even lived above the store as they raised their two sons, Tripp and Pierce. Today, along with their beloved dogs, Cleo and Titus, family continues to be at the center of everything they do. That personal connection is evident the moment customers walk through the front door. Visitors aren’t simply shopping—they’re stepping into a business built on generations of hard work, shared dreams and a genuine love for preserving the past. Over the years, Southern Accents has earned national recognition, consistently ranking among the country’s top architectural salvage businesses. Garlan and Heather have been featured in numerous publications and even appeared on the hit television show American Pickers with Mike Wolfe. Yet despite the accolades, their focus has never changed. Their greatest satisfaction comes from rescuing architectural treasures and helping customers give those pieces new life.

Garlan, Heather, Tripp and Pierce Gudger continue a family legacy built on craftsmanship, preservation and Southern hospitality.

Walking through Southern Accents feels like taking a step back in time. Visitors are surrounded by towering antique doors, beautifully aged mantels, stained glass windows, vintage sinks and tubs, ornate columns, reclaimed wood, architectural hardware, lighting, stair parts and countless one-of-a-kind pieces collected from across the country. Every room offers something unexpected, inviting customers to slow down, explore and imagine the possibilities. The buildings themselves are part of the experience. One of the historic downtown structures once served as a hotel and later as a girls’ dormitory, adding another chapter to the rich history that surrounds the business. What began as a single 2,200-square-foot building has expanded into six downtown

buildings totaling approximately 25,000 square feet. Just outside downtown, Southern Accents also operates a 50,000-squarefoot reclaimed wood warehouse, allowing the Gudgers to preserve and house an incredible inventory unlike anything else in the Southeast. For many longtime customers, a visit to Southern Accents has always been about more than finding the perfect piece. For years, guests were welcomed with a smile, offered complimentary cokes, the old glass bottles and sent on their way with two simple words that became part of the store’s identity: “Happy Hunting.” That spirit of Southern hospitality remains just as strong today. Heather oversees the retail showroom and design side of the business, helping customers envision how reclaimed architectural elements can become beautiful focal points in today’s homes. Garlan spends countless hours traveling throughout the country locating and rescuing architectural pieces that deserve a second chance. Together, they combine knowledge, creativity and experience to help customers transform ordinary spaces into homes filled with character. While professional designers, architects and builders regularly visit Southern Accents, the Gudgers say some of their favorite CONTINUED >

customers are everyday homeowners who simply come looking for inspiration. Saturdays often bring visitors from across Alabama and throughout the Southeast, many making Southern Accents a destination stop during weekend road trips. Some arrive searching for a single antique doorknob or vintage light fixture. Others leave with an entirely new vision for their home. One of Garlan’s favorite reminders of why this work matters is a lionhead doorknob rescued from a historic Birmingham home. To many, it might appear to be just another piece of hardware. But to the Gudgers, it represents craftsmanship, artistry and the countless hands that have turned it over generations. Those are the details that make every piece worth saving.

For more than 55 years, Southern Accents has welcomed visitors to downtown Cullman in search of history, inspiration and one-of-a-kind architectural treasures

Their hope is that visitors leave with more than a purchase. They want people to appreciate the craftsmanship of another era and recognize the value of preserving materials built to last. Every reclaimed beam, weathered door, antique mantel and vintage fixture has already lived one remarkable life. Southern Accents exists to ensure those pieces continue their story for another hundred years. In a world filled with mass production and fast-changing trends, Southern Accents stands as a reminder that true style never goes out of fashion. It is found in authentic materials, meaningful craftsmanship and the stories that only time can create. For more than 55 years, Southern Accents has remained a place where history is rescued, creativity flourishes and family remains at the heart of every decision. It’s a place unlike any other—one that reminds us the most beautiful homes aren’t simply decorated. They’re built with character, history and a story worth telling.

From antique hardware to timeless architectural details, every piece at Southern Accents carries a story waiting to be told.

FOR MORE THAN A DECADE, LOCAL TALENT HAS FOUND A HOME ON STAGE AT THE CULLMAN COUNTY THEATRE.

Long before the curtain rises and the audience settles into their seats, there is a different kind of performance unfolding behind the scenes. Scripts are studied, sets are built, costumes are fitted, music fills rehearsal spaces, and volunteers dedicate countless hours to bringing a story to life. For the members of Cullman Community Theatre, the magic begins long before opening night. What started as one educator’s vision has grown into one of Cullman’s most treasured arts organizations. After returning to his hometown in 2012, theatre educator Wayne Cook recognized a need for a community theatre that would give local performers of all ages an opportunity to share their talents. With the support of others who believed in the same vision, Cullman Community Theatre was born, presenting its first production, The Music Man, in the summer of 2014.

The cast of Pride and Prejudice brings Jane Austen’s beloved classic to life.

More than a decade later, the organization has become far more than a theatre company. It has become a place where friendships are formed, confidence is discovered, and creativity is celebrated. Each season brings together hundreds of volunteers, performers, directors, musicians, technicians, and supporters who share one common goal—to create memorable experiences both on stage and in the audience. The productions themselves are impressive, but the heart of Cullman Community Theatre is found in the people behind them. Volunteers spend months planning each season, coordinating sponsorships, managing budgets, building sets, designing costumes, rehearsing choreography, and perfecting every detail before opening night. Their dedication transforms empty stages into Broadway-worthy productions and introduces audiences to stories that entertain, inspire, and connect generations.

That spirit of community extends well beyond experienced performers. Whether someone has spent years under the spotlight or has never stepped onto a stage before, everyone is welcomed with encouragement and support. There is a place not only for actors but also for musicians, artists, builders, technicians, costume designers, makeup artists, and countless volunteers whose talents help each production succeed. As Cullman Community Theatre looks ahead to another exciting season featuring Beauty and the Beast Jr., The Mousetrap, Little Shop of Horrors, and the beloved summer musical Guys and Dolls, its mission remains unchanged—to provide creative opportunities for everyone while enriching the cultural life of Cullman. Workshops, auditions, and volunteer opportunities continue to invite new faces into the organization, ensuring the next generation of performers and storytellers has a place to grow. Perhaps that is what makes Cullman Community Theatre so special. It isn’t simply about applause or standing ovations. It is about neighbors creating something meaningful together. It is about children discovering confidence, adults rediscovering a passion, and audiences leaving inspired after every performance. Every production reminds us that the arts have the unique ability to bring people together, and in Cullman, that tradition continues every time the curtain rises.

Front Porch Sitting with Missy Gurley THE HEART BEHIND THE FRONT PORCH AND ITS TIMELESS STORIES.

Local author, Missy Gurley, shares the inspiration behind her debut book, The Front Porch, and why preserving Southern stories matters more than ever.

Missy Gurley Q: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THE FRONT PORCH? A: The idea came from a desire to preserve the simple moments that shaped my childhood. Growing up, a huge part of my life was my family gathering on the front porch. It is the place where neighbors visitors and life just seemed to slow down. I wanted to capture those memories before they became stories we wished we had written down. Q: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE TITLE THE FRONT PORCH? A: The front porch has always represented connection. It’s where conversations happen, laughter is shared, children play until the porch light comes on and memories are made. It felt like the perfect symbol for the stories inside the book. Q: IS THIS A MEMOIR? A: Not exactly. While many stories are inspired by my own life and experiences growing up in Alabama, the book is a collection of Southern memories and reflections that many readers will recognize as their own.

M UST SE E | ENTERTAI NME N T

Q: WHAT DO YOU HOPE READERS FEEL WHEN THEY FINISH THE LAST PAGE? A: I hope it sparks memories of their own. I hope they reflect on the times they shared on the front porch, write down a family story or simply spend a little more time on their own porch. More than anything, I hope the book reminds people that the little moments often become the biggest memories.

Q: HAS THERE BEEN A RESPONSE FROM READERS THAT HAS ESPECIALLY TOUCHED YOU? A: Hearing readers say, “I grew up cooking with my grandmother,” or “This was a perfect gift to give” has meant everything to me. Q: WAS THERE A STORY THAT WAS ESPECIALLY MEANINGFUL TO WRITE? A: Every chapter holds a special place in my heart, but the stories centered around my family are especially meaningful. I also loved including handwritten recipes from my family and my husband’s family. Those recipes are more than ingredients—they’re memories passed down through generations, and they’re truly priceless. Q: WHAT HAS SURPRISED YOU MOST SINCE THE BOOK WAS RELEASED? A: The overwhelming support from friends, family and our community has been incredible. Seeing local bookstores embrace The Front Porch, especially Arboreadum Bookshop hosting my very first author signing, has meant so much to me. Meeting readers and hearing them share their own front porch memories has been one of the greatest blessings of this journey. Q: WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? A: I’ll continue sharing The Front Porch with readers across the South while working on future writing projects. I’m excited to share more details about what’s ahead very soon. EDITOR’S NOTE With being a part of Cullman City Lifestyle, Missy Gurley has spent the past four years telling the stories of our community. With The Front Porch, she turns the page to tell one of her own, inviting readers to slow down, reminisce and celebrate the timeless traditions that connect us all. Whether you’re from Alabama or simply love the South, you’ll likely find a piece of your own story waiting on the front porch. Learn more about The Front Porch or order your copy at: MissyGurley.com

A destination for quality footwear, Werner’s Trading carries trusted brands designed for work, adventure and everyday comfort.

For generations, Werner’s Trading has been more than just a place to shop—it’s been a trusted destination where quality products, friendly faces, and hometown values come together. As the business continues to grow, so does its commitment to offering customers the best brands, exceptional service, and an experience that keeps them coming back. This past year has been one of exciting milestones for the Werner’s family. Along with the continued success of Werner’s Trading and Werner’s Ace Hardware, the opening of Wood’s Trading in Gardendale has expanded their reach while creating new opportunities to better serve customers across Alabama. “Growth has allowed us to strengthen all of our stores,” the Werner’s team shares. “Having multiple locations gives us greater buying power, which means we can bring in brands and products we couldn’t offer before. We’re always paying attention to what our customers are looking for and making sure we have those items available.” Just in time for fall, shoppers can expect an impressive lineup of new arrivals. Customers will find trusted favorites alongside exciting additions, including Ariat apparel and footwear, HOKA shoes, and an expanded selection of Southern Marsh clothing. Werner’s is excited to announce that they now have Poncho in store. They are also expanding the following: lululemon, Free People Movement, Vuori and their very own brand of athleisure wear. Fashion is just one piece of the experience. Werner’s continues to evolve its departments with products designed for everyday living, outdoor adventures, work, and home. Whether customers are searching for durable workwear, stylish everyday apparel, gifts, footwear, or outdoor equipment, the goal remains the same: provide quality products that fit the lifestyle of the community they serve. Despite the growth, one thing hasn’t changed—the family atmosphere that has defined Werner’s for decades. “We’ve always believed in treating customers like family,” they explain. “We want people to feel welcomed when they walk through our doors, and we want them to know we appreciate their business.” That personal approach has built lasting relationships spanning multiple generations. It’s common to see grandparents, parents, and children shopping together, creating traditions that continue year after year. As trends evolve, the Werner’s team works hard to balance introducing new products while maintaining the dependable brands customers have trusted for years. Listening to customer feedback remains one of the company’s greatest strengths, allowing them to adapt while never losing sight of what has made them successful. Looking ahead, the future is bright. The team plans to continue expanding product selections, strengthening relationships with customers, and finding new ways to serve the communities they proudly call home. Whether you’re refreshing your wardrobe for fall, gearing up for hunting season, searching for the perfect pair of boots, or simply browsing for something new, Werner’s Trading continues to prove that style, quality, and hometown hospitality never go out of fashion.
