Stay in style!
The Flying Fifty Hotel

Situated in the heart of Cullman’s west side is a unique new place to stay, packed with Cullman history and one-of-akind style.
“The Flying Fifty Hotel is a boutique establishment featuring seven expansive suites, each celebrating a unique aspect of Cullman’s history,” said Challie Knetter, who owns the hotel along with her husband, Paul.
Each suite is a nod to a specific aspect of the area’s rich story, and six of them have private balconies.
Photographs of some of the men who made up "The Flying Fifty"
Knetter offered a glimpse of the themed suites:
• Frankweiler: Honoring Colonel Cullmann’s birthplace and our sister city, this suite showcases Cullman’s German heritage with photos, a dirndl and lederhosen
• Lakes: Inspired by the stunning lakes of Cullman
• Wallace: Dedicated to Wallace State Community College, highlighting its significance
• Heritage: Celebrating our town’s rich heritage, including festivals and farming traditions
• Founders: Showcasing businesses that played a pivotal role in Cullman’s development
• Steeples: Focusing on local churches, this suite features five paintings by local artists and offers a view of seven churches from its balcony
• Wilderness: Highlighting the natural beauty of north Alabama and Cullman
“The concept of smaller hybrid boutique hotels is gaining popularity nationwide,” Knetter said. “John Riley, president of Cullman’s Savings Bank, stayed at a similar establishment and was inspired to help bring a place to Cullman that tells the town’s unique story.”
The design of the hotel and the pieces inside are also quintessentially Cullman.

“Local designer Amy Wood designed the hotel, blending influences from the 1950s with modern touches to create a distinctive aesthetic,” Knetter shared. “And we proudly feature works by local artists throughout the hotel. Notably, Paul Moss, a local craftsman, created several custom pieces, including the bed in the Wilderness suite and the conference room table.”
On the hotel’s website, the Knetters share, “Travel back in time and experience a one-of-a-kind stay at our centrally located boutique hotel in downtown Cullman.
Newly designed with the 1950s in mind, our hotel’s namesake comes from the 47 men, known as the ‘The Flying Fifty,’ who played an important role in creating a brighter future for our community. We hope to carry on their legacy by highlighting the spirit of Cullman for years to come.”
Planning for the hotel began in 2022, and the doors opened in May of this year.
“Many guests are surprised to learn that The Flying Fifty Hotel is a brand-new building,” Knetter said. “Its unique architecture often leads them to believe it has been renovated from an older structure.”

A fashion statement at Terri Pines
Terri Pines has the most beautiful course.

When one thinks of Southern style, what images come to mind? You can find Southern style alive and well on Southern golf courses, where stylish choices are as integral to the game as a good swing. At the heart of this tradition is Terri Pines Country Club in Cullman, a gem that epitomizes Southern charm and sophistication.
Terri Pines offers an idyllic setting for golfers who appreciate both the sport and the style that accompanies it. Nestled in the rolling hills of north Alabama, the club features an 18-hole championship golf course designed to challenge and delight players of all levels. The lush fairways and pristine greens are framed by scenic views, making every round a picturesque experience.
But it’s not just the landscape that captures attention. The golfers themselves are often a sight to behold, embodying Southern sophistication in their attire. Here, fashion is more than a statement; it’s a tradition.
In the South, appearance is paramount. This cultural emphasis on looking one’s best is deeply ingrained, and on the golf course, it translates into a blend of classic and contemporary fashion. Think crisp polo shirts, tailored shorts or slacks and visors or wide-brimmed hats that offer both style and sun protection. Ladies might don coordinated skorts and sleeveless tops, with patterns that nod to Southern heritage - think gingham, florals and bold colors.

"You can find Southern style alive and well on Southern golf courses, where stylish choices are as integral to the game as a good swing."
Our golfing couple - Tucker Hughes and Abby Gurley - look very stylish on the green. Hughes visited the Pro Shop at Terri Pines and found the perfect attire for the perfect round of golf. Gurley visited Three Pears Boutique. Her Spanx dress is sporty and stylish, ideal for a round of golf, pickleball or lunch with friends! A picnic basket, with glasses and Sancerre Rosé procured from Gervais & Lulu Vins and Champagnes, rounded out their beautiful day on the course.
Terri Pines is more than a golf course; it’s a community hub where Southern hospitality shines. The club’s amenities include a full-service restaurant and bar, swimming pool and tennis and pickleball courts. The clubhouse, with its welcoming atmosphere and panoramic views of the course, is the perfect place to relax after a round of golf or to host events that celebrate the Southern way of life.
For those visiting Terri Pines, the experience is enhanced by the club’s commitment to excellence. This dedication to service extends to maintaining the course and facilities in top condition, offering a pristine environment where style and sport coexist seamlessly.
Southern style on the golf course is about more than just clothing; it’s about embracing a way of life that values tradition, elegance and hospitality. At Terri Pines Country Club, a commitment to excellence shines through in every aspect, from the meticulously manicured greens to the fashionable ensembles of its golfers. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a novice, stepping onto the course at Terri Pines is an invitation to experience Southern charm at its finest. So next time you find yourself in Cullman, don’t just play the game - do it in style!

Beautiful Southern Tablescapes
ARTICLE BY CULLMAN CITY LIFESTYLE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY VARIOUS CREATING A WELCOMING, ELEGANT TABLE
When it comes to Southern hospitality, nothing speaks louder than a beautifully set table. In the South, dining is not just about the food, but also about the experience. A well-crafted tablescape can transform a simple meal into a memorable occasion.
Colorful
EMBRACE COLOR
Southern style is known for its vibrant and lively color palette. Don’t shy away from incorporating bold and beautiful colors into your place settings. Consider using a mix of patterned plates, colorful napkins and glassware in shades of blue, green or pink. The key is to create a harmonious blend that is visually appealing yet comfortable. Layering different textures and patterns can add depth and interest.
CLASSIC LINENS
Opt for tablecloths and napkins made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen. White or pastel-colored linens provide a perfect backdrop for more colorful accents. Don’t forget to add a touch of elegance with lace or embroidered details. For a truly Southern feel, consider monogrammed napkins that add a personal touch.
ELEGANT CENTERPIECES
The centerpiece is the focal point of your tablescape. Fresh flowers are a must-have for any Southern table. Choose seasonal blooms and arrange them in vintage vases or Mason jars for a charming touch. If you prefer a more understated look, a bowl of fresh fruit or a collection of candles can create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
PERSONALIZED NAME CARDS
Name cards are a thoughtful addition that make your guests feel special. Handwritten cards add a personal touch and can be as simple or elaborate as you like. Consider using small frames or decorative clips to display them at each place setting.
HEIRLOOM CHINA AND SILVERWARE
Incorporate heirloom china and silverware to bring a sense of tradition and history to your table. These pieces not only add elegance, but also tell a story, making your dining experience even more special. Mixing old and new elements can create a timeless and sophisticated look.
FINISHING TOUCHES
Finally, add those small details that make a big impact. Decorative chargers, napkin rings and placemats can enhance your tablescape and tie everything together. Don’t forget to pay attention to the lighting - soft, warm light creates an inviting ambiance that encourages conversation.
