A season of thanks

As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp here in Cullman, we’re reminded of the beauty of slowing down, gathering close and celebrating what truly matters. November has always been one of my favorite months — the season of thankfulness. It’s a time when kitchens fill with the smells of Southern, delicious meals, when laughter drifts across family tables and when friends gather near to share stories and create new memories.

This issue is dedicated to gratitude. I’m thankful for the families who fill this community with love, the friends who make life brighter and the local businesses who pour their hearts into serving Cullman and Smith Lake. Each shop, restaurant and small business adds to the warmth and charm of our town, and they deserve our support as we head into the holiday season.

Here in Cullman, we don’t just mark the calendar — we celebrate the moments. From front porch gatherings to holiday events that light up the square, there’s a joy in knowing that our community shines brightest when we come together.

As we prepare for the holidays, my hope is that this issue inspires you to cherish your traditions, create new ones and remember just how much we have to be thankful for.

With gratitude,

November 2025

FARM-TO-TABLE Thanksgiving

TIPS FROM MAVENS & MAKERS OWNER ASHLEA CHANCE
ARTICLE BY WENDY SACK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEA CHANCE
Mavens & Makers owners raise heritage breed livestock on their farm in Baileyton.

Yearning for a farm-to-table Thanksgiving? Mavens & Makers has a wealth of wares and advice.

“We opened in April 2021, and recently moved downtown next to Southern Accents,” said Owner Ashlea Chance.

The store is known for its farm-raised meats and veggies, quality kitchenwares, artisan foods and gifts, and, said Chance, “We’re in the process of opening our demonstrative kitchen for cooking classes and events.”

The biggest reason the store opened is to help supply locally made and grown products.

“The meat we carry comes straight from our farm in Baileyton,” said Chance. “We raise heritage breed livestock (beef, pork and lamb) and focus on growing them the way nature intended. We offer other products from other local farms and have connected with other small farms, so we can often help direct customers to others with products we don’t keep in stock. It’s great living in a community that supports one another in that way! We live in an area that is rich in agriculture, so it’s easier than you think to get connected.”

To try a farm-to-table Thanksgiving, she recommends buying a turkey (heritage, if possible) from a local farm. “We typically raise our own, but we’ll be shopping local, too. Even if you aren't ready to purchase a farm-fresh bird, start by using some fresh microgreens, seasonal produce or locally raised sausage for your stuffing.”

This year, Chance said, “I’m most thankful for those who protect our freedoms. We’re so blessed and it wouldn't be possible without them.”

FOR THE LOVE OF seniors

Visiting Angels caregivers aren’t just helpers; they’re extended family

Thanksgiving and the holiday season are a time for family, and the heart of a family is oftentimes the older generation — our seniors — those who raised us and are parts of the family traditions we cherish so much.

But our seniors need love and care every day of the year, and sometimes that includes special caregivers. That’s where agencies like Visiting Angels of Cullman, locally owned and operated by Greg and Kaye Donnelly, come in.

Said Client Care Manager Jennifer Hinds, “We provide a wide range of non-medical home care services, from personal care and companionship to dementia and Alzheimer's care, palliative support, respite care, help with ADLs and medication reminders. Our services are covered by Veterans Affairs, longterm care insurance and private pay, which allows us to meet the needs of many families. Our mission is to give seniors the ability to live safely, comfortably and with dignity in their own homes while giving their families peace of mind.”

Hinds said the group’s caregivers aren’t just helpers; they become like extended family.

“Many of our clients and caregivers share meals together, celebrate birthdays and exchange stories that create genuine bonds. Much like trusted family friends, our caregivers provide emotional support in addition to physical care,” she explained. “For families who live out of town or who have busy schedules, knowing their loved one has someone who truly cares makes all the difference.”

For some seniors, especially those without close, extended families, the holidays can be hard. Having a special caregiver can ease the loneliness they feel.

“Loneliness can feel sharper when others are surrounded by family gatherings, and for those who have lost loved ones, memories of past holidays can feel lonely,” said Hinds. “During the holidays, our caregivers might help a client bake their favorite recipe, decorate the tree or simply sit with them to share stories. Beyond companionship, they also provide practical support, such as helping with holiday meal prep or assisting with safe transportation to church services or

family gatherings and even accompanying them to community events. These efforts allow seniors to participate fully in the season without feeling left out. For many of our clients, these shared experiences with caregivers create some of the warmest holiday memories.”

The Visiting Angels teams said they’re very thankful this year for many things.

“This year, and every year, we are most thankful for our incredible team of caregivers. They give so much of themselves to make life brighter for others. They often sacrifice their own holiday time with families to be present with clients who would otherwise spend the day alone. That kind of selflessness can’t be measured, but it’s deeply felt by the families we serve.  We are also thankful for the families who trust us with their loved ones. It’s an honor to be welcomed into their homes and lives, and we don’t take that privilege lightly. This season reminds us that community is all about showing up for one another, and we are grateful to be a part of Cullman and the surrounding areas.”

EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC: ‘The Nutcracker’

CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THIS YEAR'S PRODUCTION OF "THE NUTCRACKER?"

This will be the fifth season of "The Nutcracker" story ballet presented by the Cullman Ballet Company, with a community cast of children who audition and adults who volunteer.

The Cullman Ballet Company, the official pre-professional ballet company of The Cullman Ballet Theatre School, has presented many traditional story ballets since the school was established in 1973 and the company in 1995.

The addition of The Performance Center in 2020 made it easier for our first “Nutcracker” performances in 2021. We were determined to present the full story — not a condensed version.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR THIS SEASON?

We’re grateful for our supportive faculty and families, as involvement grows year after year.

After performing at Wallace State, this marks our third year at Hartselle High School, a venue with excellent facilities. Securing a suitable stage for ballet isn’t easy, so we appreciate Hartselle’s accommodations.

Whether or not you’ve seen “The Nutcracker,” we invite you to experience our unique choreography and join us for this magical production!

ASHLEY MERCANTILE IS A NOD TO FAMILY TRADITIONS

Heirlooms, heart and Southern roots

I have a saying — ‘If we’re meeting, we’re eating!’

Ashley Mercantile was born out of family traditions, and it began with a red-and-white vintage enamel brownie pan.

“That’s where the idea for the store started,” explained Owner Ryne Ashley. “We were out of town and our bigger family was with us and we went to a really cool store that I knew about, and both of my grandmothers brought this pan to me together and told me, ‘Ryne, we would do anything if we had our grandmothers’ stuff just like this.’ That little interaction kind of lit a fire within us to find heirloom goods to be sold and passed down and make memories — to be priceless family items that are passed down that can’t be bought or replaced.”

The business is described as “a modern-day general store,” and Ryne and his wife, Heather, opened the Cullman location in 2018.

Celebrating heirloom-quality goods and Southern traditions, Ashley said, means a lot goes into deciding what goes on the shelves.

“First of all, we look at the quality of the product and the possible longevity of the product. I love dealing with individuals rather than larger companies. You’re able to get a vibe from the individual on what they do and how much they believe in their product,” he said. “ I also think about if we can see ourselves using this product in our home and showing it when friends or family come over. We have a small group of people in different stages of life that we bounce products and ideas off of, too, and if the majority of

the people we trust show an interest in it, it helps us make the decision.”

He added, “We also want to offer things at a good price, so we try to toe the line between those heirloom-quality items and good goods.”

This time of year is ripe with nostalgia, and traditions and family cookware/recipes are so important during Thanksgiving and the holidays. Ashley Mercantile recognizes that for its customers.

“Obviously in the South in the third and fourth quarters of the year, families get together and I have a saying — ‘If we’re meeting, we’re eating!,’” Ashley laughed. “Good food always lends to a good time. So many times nowadays we need that comfort food, whether it’s just in the moment of sheer comfort of those meals or a certain food that brings back a memory of when we were younger and things were not as crazy and a little bit slower. Besides the food items we sell, be it cookware or mixes or jellies and jams, in all these meal-related items, we want to acknowledge that. Anything we can get for Ashley Mercantile that encourages you as a customer to spend time with your family — whether that’s your parents, your siblings, your kids, your nieces or your nephews — we will buy that item.”

Ashley also shared what he’s thankful for this Thanksgiving, saying, “God’s love and mercy for us. And that he gives people to us to be in our lives to help walk with us every day. God knew we needed that.”

WELCOME TO 412 PUBLIC HOUSE

One of the best restaurants in north Alabama began as an idea in a local fitness club almost 10 years ago. 412 Public House is one of those unique places that’s perfect for a special occasion or a weekly date.

“It started as an idea in late 2016,” explained Owner Stephen Gannon. “I met our chef/partner, Rico (Ricardo Nishimura), along with our other partner (who is no longer with us) at my gym, Anytime Fitness, in 2015. That partner did first suggest this idea among the three of us, and then we ‘ran with it’ starting in 2017, breaking ground in August 2017, opening April 12 (4-12), 2018.”

If you’ve been to 412, you no doubt have your favorite dish, and even favorite side (Brussels sprouts!). Gannon shared his personal picks.

“My favorite item from our dinner menu is our Pork Chop Ribeye,” he said. “From our lunch menu it’s the Beef Medallion Sliders. And my favorite cocktail is Bar Manager Jeremy White’s traditional Old Fashioned.”

For the holiday season, 412 will have an array of seasonal selections.

“We’ll have a several holiday specials, both food and drink, throughout the season,” Gannon smiled. “We’ll

be serving a couple of traditional, cold-weather drinks off of our patio during the Cullman Christkindlmarkt Parade. We’ll also have a special New Year’s Eve menu.” This is the season of thanks, and along with that comes giving back, which 412 does all year round.

Said Gannon, “We strive to be supportive in a variety of ways, most especially through sponsorships of local educational and philanthropic groups and donations to a variety of fundraising efforts and charitable causes.”

THANKSGIVING IS THE TIME OF YEAR WHEN WE ALL REFLECT AND GIVE THANKS. WHAT IS 412 PUBLIC HOUSE OWNER STEPHEN GANNON THANKFUL FOR THIS THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY SEASON?

“Having now lost my mom early this year and my dad 10 years ago, I am most thankful for my incredible parents, whose examples of faith, work ethic and integrity made it possible for me to pursue the things we’re doing now,” Gannon said, adding, “People have asked me what I enjoy most about starting and operating businesses. In all sincerity, my greatest satisfaction has been my chance to provide an opportunity to my now partners and all our team members — to truly showcase their skills and talent in such great environments.”

Following dreams, framing memories

With One Floral Touch, local artisan is doing both

Ever wish you could follow your dreams?

Keri Lann took that wish and made it reality last year, launching One Floral Touch.

“After my wedding in June 2024, I searched locally for someone highly skilled in floral preservation to press my bouquet, but I struggled to find an expert I could fully trust with something so meaningful,” said Lann. “That challenge planted the idea that maybe this was something I could learn to do. I’ve always been creative and hands-on, and I wanted to be able to translate those skills into my career.”

Lann pursued her dream wholeheartedly — even flying solo across the country for one-on-one, extensive training from a floral preservation expert. Soon, she chose to step away from her career as a pediatric speech therapist to pour her heart into her work at One Floral Touch.

And that work doesn’t just include bridal bouquets and wedding flowers.

“I love pressing flowers that celebrate life’s many milestones — nursery pieces for expecting mothers, delicate pink or blue blooms for gender reveals, anniversary arrangements, engagement flowers, birthday bouquets and even Mother’s Day blooms. My goal is to help people hold on to those fleeting, beautiful moments in a timeless way,” she explained.

Lann said the level of care she puts into each flower makes her work unique, with each bloom deconstructed, pressed, color corrected and reconstructed. “This process allows the flowers to hold their natural color and beauty over time.”

Recently, she worked on a very meaningful project — a 30x40 frame for a mother of the groom. “She asked me to preserve all the florals from the rehearsal dinner. I just think that’s such a beautiful sentiment, not only as a way to honor her son’s wedding, but also as a piece she can treasure, and one day pass down to her son and daughter-in-law.”

Lann also reflected on what she’s thankful for this Thanksgiving.

“I’m most thankful for my husband. He’s my biggest supporter, reminding me it’s worth chasing after something I truly love. From the beginning, he’s been cheering me on, giving me the confidence to build this dream. I couldn’t be more grateful for his encouragement in this season of life.”

H O P E

Begins with YOU A SEASON TO SEE THE UNSEEN

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.
