A Southern salute to our men

There’s something steadfast about Southern men — June is a special time to honor them, and with Father’s Day around the corner, it feels only fitting that we dedicate this issue to the men who have shaped our lives.

As I reflect on the men I am so thankful for, I am filled with gratitude. I am thankful for my father, whose wisdom and unwavering support built a foundation for every step I’ve taken. I am thankful for my husband, who I could not imagine doing life without and who is always there for his family. And now, watching my son grow into the young man he is becoming, my heart swells with pride and hope for the future.

In the South, we celebrate our men not just for what they do, but for who they are: protectors, providers, teachers and friends. Their legacy lives in the way they treat others, the stories they pass down and the quiet lessons they teach by example.

This month, we raise our glasses — and our hearts — to the men of Cullman and beyond. You are appreciated. You are loved. And this month, we celebrate you.

With gratitude,

Precision, elegance and identity

‘A quality watch remains a symbol of consistency and character’

Kingdom Watch Company in Cullman was founded out of a deep passion for horology — the art and science of timekeeping.

Owner and Founder Nathan Apodaca certainly loves what he does, too; it’s evident in the way he talks about his work and comes through in the quality of his pieces.

“I’ve always seen watchmaking as more than just building a product; it’s a creative expression of precision, elegance and identity,” he said. “Every piece I craft is driven by the belief that time should be honored, respected and beautifully displayed. My mission is to design unique, high-quality timepieces that blend artistic craftsmanship with lasting sophistication — watches that reflect both purpose and personality. Kingdom Watch Company stands proudly as an independent brand, dedicated to excellence, style and legacy.”

Nathan specializes in crafting unique, elegant timepieces that are exquisitely designed and built to stand the test of time.

“Our collections are built with intention,” he said. “Each watch blends traditional watchmaking techniques with a modern aesthetic. We offer limited-edition pieces, custom designs and curated watch consultations to help our clients select the perfect

timepiece that fits their style and story. We believe owning a watch is a journey, not just a purchase.”

Since this is our men’s issue, I asked Nathan, “Why is it important for a man to own a nice watch?”

He told me, “A well-made watch is more than a timekeeper — it’s a statement. For a man, a watch represents discipline, self-respect and an appreciation for detail. It tells the world that you value your time, and by extension, the time of others. A great watch finishes a look with confidence, acting as both a practical tool and a personal signature. It speaks before you do — about your style, your priorities and your presence. In a world full of fast fashion and fleeting trends, a quality watch remains a symbol of consistency and character.”

Kingdom Watch Company Owner and Founder Nathan Apodaca poses with a display of timepieces.

In a time of smartphones, smartwatches, etc., fewer people wear traditional watches. For Nathan, that’s why traditional timepieces matter now more than ever.

“A phone may tell the time, but it doesn’t say anything about who you are. A traditional watch is intentional — it’s worn, not carried. It reflects a mindset that values artistry, craftsmanship and timeless style,” he explained. “While trends come and go, a beautifully crafted watch remains an enduring symbol of identity. It’s not about needing to tell the time — it’s about appreciating how you choose to wear it.”

Speaking of timeless, Nathan shared the watch styles that will always be in fashion.

“Certain ones never go out of style because they strike a perfect balance between function and form. The classic dress watch, with a clean dial and slim profile, is always a staple — it transitions effortlessly from boardroom to evening event,” he said. “Chronographs combine utility with elegance, offering a sporty yet refined look. The diver’s watch stands strong with its rugged build and versatile appeal, while minimalist designs with understated elegance suit nearly any occasion. At Kingdom Watch Company, we lean into these timeless silhouettes, blending tradition with bold, fresh design elements that stand out — yet stay classic.”

CULLMAN SAVINGS BANK

Investing in the heart of the community

Cullman Savings Bank opened its doors in 1887 as Cullman Building & Loan with the same intentions as it has today, to make Cullman a better place for all who live here.

“We want to do things for the betterment of the community,” said President and CEO John Riley. “Whether it’s funding scholarships for students who may not be able to go to college any other way, helping a new business get its start or supporting local nonprofits, our goal is to invest in the people who make Cullman great.”

Through the Cullman Savings Bank Foundation, the Bank has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to local nonprofits, area schools and countless local organizations. Last year alone, over 50 scholarships were awarded to Wallace

State students, helping them achieve their educational goals. During Covid, the Bank wanted to help the local restaurants that were suffering and over several weeks, purchased meals and gave them to local residents.

“It’s just the way we do business,” Riley said. “We invest in our community. We are proud of the role we play in contributing to the growth of the community we serve. Through partnerships with local businesses and nonprofit organizations we are able to make a difference in people’s lives.”

VP of Marketing Clara Kent and Executive VP & COO T’aira Ugarkovich echoed that sentiment. “Our mission is about people, not just banking,” Kent said. “Cullman is our home, and we want to see it thrive.”

Cullman Savings Bank's T'aira Ugarkovich and John Riley get a yummy treat from Tammy Hill at Seven Daughters Scoops.

The Bank’s employees are also hands-on in the community, whether serving on boards, volunteering at and supporting local events, or even handing out free ice cream at a local ice cream shop.

An example of the Bank’s innovative way of investing in the community is the addition of the Flying Fifty building, which houses the Bank’s new drive-through location.  The building was the vision of Riley, along with the Board of Directors. They not only wanted their customers to have an easy access drive-through, they wanted to give the entire community a place they could enjoy.  Additionally, it is the perfect place for visitors to experience the unique character of Cullman.  The building is home to The Flying Fifty Hotel, Jubilee Coffee and Wine Bar, Seven Daughters Scoops and Sipsey Winery.

Whether helping customers, supporting local schools or strengthening community programs, Cullman Savings Bank continues to put people first. It has been a trusted cornerstone of the community since 1887. More than just a bank, Cullman Savings Bank is a dedicated partner in building a better future for Cullman County.

What advice would you give your 25-year-old self?

Wise words

We asked three successful local men to share some wisdom by way of answering a simple question: "What advice would you give your 25-year-old self?”

PHOTOGRAPHY CONTRIBUTED BY INTERVIEWEES

Benjamin Grizzell,

Smith Lake Rentals and Sales

“A few years after I turned 25, my life did a full somersault. I became a full-time father. If I could go back and give my 25-year-old self some advice, I’d say take a deep breath, invest in earplugs and stock up on snacks. Your kids are going to be awesome (and occasionally feral), but do not, under any circumstances, try to reason with them. Being an entrepreneur and a full-time father is basically like being the ringleader of a circus where all the animals are slightly out of control, the clowns are unionized and success is measured by whether or not the tent caught fire that day. Some days, the tent smolders, but you still win.”

Declan Yearwood, Brothers Concrete Supply

“Take care of your mind and body with healthy habits — it’s the foundation for everything. Keep learning and investing in your growth through reading, education, exploring your interests and developing trade skills. Don’t be afraid to explore what spirituality means to you and create a relationship with the God of your understanding. Make time to enjoy life, not just work, as there is plenty of time to build a career. Remember that not everyone, including family and friends, deserves access to you — set boundaries. Stay present and do your best each day; the future will unfold as it’s meant to.”

Dr. Spencer Boozer, Boozer Eyecare Associates

“You don't need to have it all figured out right now. Take small, consistent steps toward the things that excite you, and don't let fear of failure stop you from starting. Most of what you're worrying about won't matter in five years — but the habits you build and the risks you take will shape who you become."

A father, son legacy

PHOTOGRAPHY CONTRIBUTED

Dr. R. Bryan Boozer established Boozer Eyecare Associates more than 40 years ago. It's a well-known, highly respected practice, and it's made all the more special because of the family legacy within its walls. Boozer's son, Dr. Spencer Boozer, joined his dad in the practice in 2017. And just last year, the younger Boozer took ownership of the family business, giving his dad (who is still on staff), more time to relax and enjoy some family time.  In this Q&A, get to know a little more about the history of Boozer Eyecare, and the direction it's heading.

FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT AT BOOZER EYECARE ASSOCIATES

Dr. Spencer Boozer, right, with his father, Dr. R. Bryan Boozer
"LOOKING BACK, I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE DECISION TO FOLLOW IN HIS FOOTSTEPS."

CAN YOU TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT BOOZER EYECARE ASSOCIATES' FOUNDING AND HISTORY?

"Boozer Eyecare was founded in 1984 by my dad, when my parents moved to Cullman from Enterprise. He began his practice in a small building near the railroad crossing near the new Monograms Plus location. Over time, his practice grew and required larger spaces to accommodate the eye care needs of a growing community. In 1990, Boozer Eyecare built its first standalone clinic near Merchant’s Bank on Second Avenue – this is also the year I was born. For the next 29 years, Boozer Eyecare remained at that location and expanded from a single-doctor practice to a four-doctor practice at our newest location on Field of Miracles Drive at present. We are so grateful to the community for their trust and support in us, which has allowed us to continue to deliver the latest in eye care products and technologies for the past 41 years."

DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE AN OPTOMETRIST LIKE YOUR DAD?

"Actually, no. I was fortunate to have his support to pursue my interests without feeling pressured to pursue a career in optometry. I originally considered a career as a cataract surgeon. As I began my undergraduate studies at Auburn University, I enrolled in a pre-health care professions orientation course as a required elective for any prospective health care professional. Each meeting, we heard from a variety of different doctors, pharmacists, dentists – and during a session with a doctor from the UAB School of Optometry, I had a realization that the career of a cataract surgeon didn’t provide the opportunities for building a long-term bond with your patients that I was seeking. I knew I wanted to specialize in some particular field of health care, and optometry provides me with the chance to build those lasting relationships while practicing a specialty. Looking back, I am very pleased with the decision to follow in his footsteps."

Dr. Spencer Boozer

"I love to travel to new places and enjoy a unique experience along the way. I feel like some of life’s most important lessons are best learned while traveling to a place outside your comfort zone, so with any free time, I would probably choose to spend it exploring a new destination. I love snow skiing, and I try to make a trip to the mountains at least once a season to stretch my ski legs. I was fortunate to get to spend time in Colorado to complete my training while attending UAB so the mountains are a special place for me. While I’m home, I enjoy spending time at Smith Lake with friends and family."

Boozer received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences from Auburn University. He earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry in 2017. He is a member of the Alabama Optometric Association and the Leadership Institute of the American Optometric Association.

WHAT'S IT LIKE WORKING WITH YOUR DAD IN THE FAMILY BUSINESS? WHAT'S THAT DYNAMIC LIKE?

"It has been an adventure! When I joined Boozer Eyecare in 2017, we were still in our former location where VisionAmerica is today. Not only have we practiced optometry alongside each other, we have been through the grueling process of designing, constructing and moving of an office. While some of our opinions may differ here and there, we share a common vision. Without each of our efforts, none of what you see today would be possible, and we are both very proud to be able to bring our vision to light, together. In 2024, I assumed ownership of Boozer Eyecare and dad began to reduce his time in the clinic in order to spend more time with family and out on a golf course. Most days in the clinic don’t provide us much time to interact, but it is nice knowing that he’s usually just down the hall as an added layer of support."

WHERE DO YOU SEE BOOZER EYECARE AND YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?

"In 10 years, I hope to look back and see that I have continued to maintain a state-of-the-art optometry practice that provides a stable work environment for staff and a great opportunity for the next generation of eye doctors in our community. I also want to make a positive impact in my profession by helping to advance legislation that hasn’t seen an update since I was 4 years old. Today’s doctors of optometry across the country are graduating at a higher skill level than what the state of Alabama allows them to practice; therefore, we see a lot of talent leave our state in order to practice to their highest level of training. I am hopeful that my next 10 years will see a meaningful change to the way eye care services are provided for the citizens of our state and community."
